[Q] More Vanilla Feel? - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, as I'm sure most of you have noticed, Verizon screwed us a little on the status bar and icons (not transparent when it should be, etc). Other than the xposed module tint bars (which I felt didn't really do it well last time I tried it, since its in beta), is there a non intrusive way to fix this? Root or nonroot ways.

Hmmmm I've tweaked the tinted bar module and the translucent bar module (meant for nexus 10 but works on any), and seem to do a pretty great job, but I'm open to suggestions
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Did you see this thread? I didn't actually try it. I have root, but don't really feel like messing with system files.
I tried the translucent bar module meant for Nexus 10 on Xposed, but didn't notice a difference in the stock launcher. Maybe I did it wrong?

which thread? nothing showed up, but are you referring to the one in the Moto X Forum and changing out the systemui.apk's and such? I don't feel comfortable with it terribly. I was chatting with one of the product directors for the Droid Maxx last night on G+, and that was one of the more requested updates for the Droid line's next update, sooooo... hoping Motorola defeats VZW's douche-ness on killing vanilla

LOL, I'm an idiot. Here's the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2595704
Sounds like a similar procedure to changing out systemui.apks and stuff.

yeah, i think its the same guy who posted it in Moto X, except without the flashing... Idk. If it doesn't come out in the next month or so (4.4.2), I might do this. But this is definitely better than flashing, thanks!

2.1 black notification bar

With 1.6, I was using a framework.res that had a dark notification bar and simple, clear icons. I think it may have been taken from HTC's phones.
Has anyone made this again for 2.1? I really don't care for the default x10 icons.

Someone posted one in another thread which was different to the original but said it worked, and it did, so took to searching custom rom threads, pulled a few framework-res files, and came across it. As it now uses a 9.png I think you're allowed a little variation in the dimensions.

I was thrown too by it, but yes it's the same principle which can be used with other 9.pngs such as drop down menus and the like, but I've not strayed too far with others as I've done it on a trial and error basis but not had any errors so far, so if you swap a 9 and your phone doesn't boot or you need to reflash don't blame me.

Is there a how to on changing your Sense lock to AOSP?

Title pretty much says it all. I've been hopping from mod to mod, theme to theme, framework to framework to get exactly what I want in my phone aesthetically. I'm using this frame right now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12131447&postcount=37210
The guy who ported was kind enough to point me to this AOSP lock that worked, but didn't quite match what I wanted to accomplish. I'm really looking for this lock, and if not then just a straight up AOSP lock.
As I said, I've tried just about every combo possible but everything takes something away that I want to keep. I tried the how to theme thread, and it was a great resource but only offered advice on how to change the png on HTC's lock; something I'm not particularly interested in.
Is there a howto on how to get this accomplished myself? I've looked everywhere, but I can't find anything. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
You can just use root explorer to rename your HTC lockscreen to something else to get the vanilla lock

Exactly what I needed man, thanks. I pretty much ninjamorphed whatever he had with CM's and it looks great. the only thing I'm missing is the "unlock" text over the bar. I know that's nitpicky, but do I just reopen the sliding tab and print it on there myself?

He wasn't trying to be a ****. It's a very flexible and effective way to change your lock to just about anything including a ton of custom locks. Well worth $1.99 to people who want a high degree of customization and control over their lockscreen.
Why not purchase widgetlock? You can switch between aosp lc and lense lc. Just my opinion

First off, I love your work on this. The whole theme is great, and the only reason I keep trying to Frankenstein this one in particular is because I love the black on-screen notifications over that HTC grey. Unfortunately when I replaced frameworks I bootlooped :-/
@the other two previous to this post: I don't want to do that because its unnecessary. I don't need to spend money on a bandaid when I (with the help of others here) can go into the filesystem and do it myself.

[REQ]stock rom with mods

I don't want to come out as needy and disrespectful. This is just a request.
Can anyone creat a custome ROM that is as close to stock as possible?
With a few exceptions. Of course remove all the bloat ware, creat a new status bar by removing the t-mobile logo that waists space and the previously used apps (we all know how to hold the home button), and lastly make a numeric battery. Try not to use the circle batterys but stay as close to the original as possible.
Ooh as well fix sence 3.0 and have lockscreen icons.
Also I do use the caller I'd feature T-Mobile provides I don't want $4 down the drain so.please keep that function.

patience, young jedi... I'm sure someone will come out with something soon. I'd like exactly what you're asking for, too!
if I ever get some free time (not likely in the next 2 weeks) I will start cooking up some roms for us. I'm in the middle of a big transition right now and just haven't had time to sit down and start tearing roms apart. -____-
op: have you checked out the UOT kitchen? you can accomplish most of the status bar and battery tweaks you want through it.
the bloatware I would just uninstall with TiBu or any other program capable of uninstalling system apps.
the sense 3.0 lockscreen... not too sure. I've always been an aosp guy so I haven't spent much time modding sense.
Im in the same boat as queen I have something in the works also soone as I finish this rom for my epic !

No rush guys this phone isn't going anywhere. I would love to learn how to cook. I need to get over the big learning curve. The only reasone I ask is because there are specific files I don't know if are usefull or not. Like for example the new caller id feature I don't know witch files are associated with it. I do freeze as much as I can in tibp but I feel like its still slowing the phone down or taking up space. I've been a windows user a long long time and feel like when you uninstall something it's not the same as having a clean install. I can't get over that mindset. BTW thanks for the quick responce.

Those two changes require a framework hack, which requires another hack in services to disable signature verification. I've always wanted to remove those damn "Recent Apps" from the status bar, but only recently learned how to disable signature verification for when the framework is modified.
We have some amazing devs I'm sure sence 3.0 framework will be easly modified. Although I'm sure you can change the status bar without framwork mods like they did on the MyTouch 4g. Unless I'm wrong. Also thanks for revolution.

Until ROMs start coming out, use titanium backup to uninstall any of the bloatware you don't want. I uninstalled just about every app on my phone, and installed better versions of the ones I wanted, and in one case I uninstalled a stock app, then downloaded the same app from the market.
After getting rid of all the bloatware I noticed drastic battery life improvement, so I started looking at other things that were always running in the background, two of them were the preinstalled note pad app and Google Maps. I would stop them, and they would be back running in a matter of moments. I uninstalled both of them, downloaded Google Maps and ColorNote. For some reason, Maps is never running in the background any more. Not sure why that worked, but it did.
Well as I said in the post before I'm using the freeze function for now so I don't ruin anything. It goes into why I don't like doing that.

Means you have to copy SystemUI.apk to your computer, decompile it, re-write part of the code, re-compile it back into an .apk, then install it on the phone.
One of those "easier said then done" things, but not terribly difficult if you read through the thread and take the time to install the tools you need to your computer.
I'm intrigued by this, but there are other things on my list for this phone before I get around to something like this.
Is it just me or is the mt4gs forum dead? I know its the summer and all but wow. Not an attemp at anything. I'm not talking about custome roms. I'm talking about everything.

I've actually just decided to try recruiting devs from the Sensation forum. Given the similarity between the devices, I'm hoping that it wouldn't be too difficult for someone out there to help us out...

I wasn't expecting much dev support here in the beginning. I think ports will start showing up slowly but don't expect it to be anything like the Sensation subforum.
it's a shame because this is a killer device that can run anything thrown at it. with some patience and luck we'll get some devs who are interested in creating things for the slide... maybe from the G2 section once more people start changing over.
at least there's really nothing function-wise on the stock rom that makes it unusable for me. once the bloat is gone and ADW ex (or whatever home replacement you like) is loaded, it's pretty much all I need.. some aosp love would sure be nice though for me.
Yea, but it's a new device...and an expensive one so a lot of people don't have one yet.
For early adopters it's hard sometimes, my approach has just been to try to document everything as thoroughly as possible so that when devs do come, they have less work to do.
Of course, the best way to get something done is to do it yourself - i'd like to make my own ROM for this device, but i'm a long way from that. It'll happen, but i'm pretty positive that by the time I get it all figured out Cyanogenmod will have been ported to this device.
Still won't stop me from doing it though, i'm too curious.
Meantime, posting up everything we can learn about the phone will help in getting a custom ROM when a dev willing to do so comes through here.
I was wondering the same thing. I'm coming from the HD2 and the Galaxy St Vibrant so anyone who knows those phones understands.... I was thinking this forum would be a little more lively.
I've gone from refreshing a lot to refreshing once a day.
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using XDA Premium App
Yeah. Totaly. Look at the phones I've owned in the signature. I remember going back to the razer the forums were packed with hex mods and java games. Maybe not this specific one. Still this is the biggest mt4gs forum.
Someone above noted that the phone is new and expensive. That is definitely a factor. Also, from what I saw, T-Mobile didn't really market this phone heavily before it came out. Right at the launch I saw a good amount of ads but not long before. Like the SGS2 has gotten real advertising saturation. This phone is a real contender but because it doesn't have a huge screen it received, and continues to receive, less attention.
Things will pick up but at this point I have prepared myself for a wait. Devs will eventually get the word on how good it is and then things will pick up but it will take some time. For me, the hardware we have is worth the wait.
I did have a thought. Find out if there are devs working on this phone. If not, we could look at collectively getting a phone to a dev that could get it moving.

[Apps][Theming][Tweaks] (Without root)(Updated 10/21)

Check links below
So I was poking around the Note 8 forum and came across a few mods that are working on our devices without root. THESE ARE NOT MY APPS/MODS AND I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR THE DEVELOPERS HARD WORK THAT WENT INTO THESE APPS. I just wanted to share. In the first link below we have the Substratum Theme Engine (Link below). This will let you theme things like drop down, Google Apps such as Google Now, Chrome, Instagram, Pandora, YouTube Google Play Store and more. Some themes work better then others at this time but hopefully in the future these themes will be fully working. The themed apps im using is from someone you may or may not know but has been here on xda for a number of years and has done some amazing work here and goes by the name of @cerj and the link to his theme: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cerj.bigblu
If you find yourself over there give him a thumbs up or something for his hard work.
The next mod/app is called Muviz (Link below). This is a customizable visual navbar equalizer and will work with Pandora YouTube and a bunch of different apps.
Another useful apps I've started using is BK Disabler. I've noticed that Package Disabler wasn't working for this device on launch day so found this alternative to help with getting rid of bloatware or unwanted carrier installed apps that maybe taking up useful space or eating your battery. (Link below)
Next up is one you may or may not know about. It's a app called Doze (Link below) We all know that data is one of the biggest power drain. If you keep your data on all the day, apps can run out of full battery even without using your phone. When screen is off, Doze prevents your apps from sending or receiving data without disabling your Wi-Fi or 2G/3G/4G data. In this way it adds more hours to standby time and makes significant difference to battery life.
So im not sure if Samsung did away with the notification pop up on our devices or it just doesn't work with Nova Launcher or maybe I'm missing something but my notification pop up is gone so I found a app called Heads up SMS Notifications (Link below). It does just that. Could be a better app out there and if so comment below and let everyone know.
........OCT 21, 2017....... UPDATE!
I found this over at the N8 thread and figured I'd bring it on over here. It's a app that allows you to add buttons to your navbar which I thought was pretty cool. Originally found here https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-8/themes/app-custom-navigation-bar-add-t3671528 so give that guy a thumbs-up. You will need a computer to perform adb comments and you can find the download here https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979 and thank that fella. Custom Navigation Bar (Link Below)
Hope you enjoy as much as I do. If anyone has any cool apps and links to apps please leave in comments below if you like so that others may enjoy them as well.

Its the same theming app i posted hehe
Thanks for the post. I'm giving the app a go, and so far, it works well. I have a question regarding app elements, and I was wondering if anyone has any tips. I'm going with a black theme, and when I apply it, there are a few elements in a couple of apps that are turning out all black. One is calculator. The numbers are fine, but the symbol keys are all blacked out, making them invisible. The second is dialer. Everything looks alright, except for the FAB for the number pad. It's all black.
For primary color, I used #000000, and for accent, I used #ffffff. Am I doing this right?
Thanks for any help.
EDIT: Figured it out. I had to change the primary color from black to something else.
Thanks for the post. I have been looking at a way to theme it more than just Samsung Themes let's you and I have been trying to get fonts and this does it all! J know substraum could to but I always had bad luck with it. We will see how stable this is but I feel like it is going to be just fine. I even decided to do the donate version to support the developers. Thanks again
Uuhh... You guys all know about substratum right?

Because many of you are acting like theming outside if Samsung themes is some new things, and that this mediocre app is somehow amazing?
Just saying, the theme isn't even compatible between the two

Substratum SUCKS. When I used it on Nougat it drained the **** outta my battery. Now that it's on Oreo, they made a new app "Andromeda" and wanna charge people $$$ again just for an update. RIDICULOUS TRASH!

In trying to use Substranium on Oreo and isn't working very well. Disappointed for sure. Hopefully the $2 I spent will fix the bugs

The only reason I chose to go with this app as opposed to Substratum is because the bar for entry with this app is really low, comparatively. I have an S8 Active which is not rooted (nor am I planning to root). This means I have to download Andromeda ($2) and the desktop script in order to get Substratum to work. And I have no guarantee that it will work well. I have to pay $2 to find out, and then request a refund if it doesn't. With this app, I download one app, no additional app(s) to install, and no desktop script to run after every reboot. Plus, I don't have to deal with paying, only to request a refund later if things don't work out.
It may not be as pretty, but it's functional for my needs.
After oreo substratum and andromeda aren't working on my note 8 so I tried this app again after months of not using it. Its come a long way. I freaking love being able to do ANY color notifications I want with ANY color text! I don't think people realize what this app can do now. I see people that basically just want black notifications with white text so it can be easily read. In my opinion it blows substratum out of the water even when I did have it working on nougat. This may be my favorite app ever.
So this is just a Trial app and you have to pay to unlock all features? And I think its not fully compatible with OREO yet.

Oreo compatible. Is not a trial, it has features that require a donation but it's functional without those couple of options. Also it s a trail breaker built in. So themes will stick without messing with disabling anything.

Whats the problem? Why dont you use substratum and pay for something thats not even supported in the future? Just saying let us have fun with it
Substratum can't do notifications like this that I know of. That's the main reason this app gets me. Notifications anyway you want them. Not just black or white.

See, if you had the first clue what you were taking about, or even a general idea how any of this worked, you would realize how misinformed and silly you sound.
First of all, substratum did not "drain the **** out of" your battery. That is physically impossible, as there are no running services involved outside of the brief part where you use the app to install the theme. Nothing running means no battery drain. Computers are smart enough to change some colors and shapes on the screen without taxing a 3,000mah battery and an over 1ghz processor. Dont blame substratum because your system was screwed up and needed a factory reset.
Secondly, since you obviously have no clue how any of this works im in a good mood today so I'll explain it to you. Forgive the length, but there is a lot that appatrently needs explaining lol.
First, substratum isn't "charging people for an update." samsung oreo has a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT theme engine than samsung nougat. Why is this the case? Because with nougat samsung, in their oh so excellent wisdom completely ripped out and replaced the already existing theme engine in stock android with their own monstrosity. Why they did this is anyone's guess, but the answers definitely wont include words like "compatibility" or "logic", but it broke existing nougat theming. Given that the substratum app is basically a "theme compiler" app that builds layers used by the os, a substratum dev team figured out that they could compile substratum theme manifests into the magic proprietary samsung hybrid-engine tire fire that is the touchwiz nougat theme system. So they did, and it works. It doesn't allow native drop in of any configuration of system themes for aosp to the completely different tw versions, but it works, and works well provided someone has actually designed the theme layers with substratum in mind. At first those were few and far between and i too was frustrated at looking at countless themes on play store that wouldn't work on my phone, but now there are numerous beautiful options for the s8 and s8+. I count 21 different themes installed on my phone now, and i have a lot of them but not all.
After this substratum implemented theming for oreo, for which the entire ecosystem had finally solidified around the aosp theming engined (called OMS). They realized that with an app similar, BUT COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO like what they had done for samsung, they could open theming up to all standard oreo devices. So they did, and it works, except for that you have to grant privileges via adb to make changes without root which dont persist across reboot (this would be googles fault), but it allows the entire ecosystem to use native theming, so Yay.
Come several months later, and oreo betas finally appear. As devs look at them to see what changes to sungstratum (the addon for samsung nougat) would be necessary, low and behold they find that samsung has apparently seen the error of their ways and left the oreo OMS theme system (almost) entirely intact! This is great news everyone thinks, because now even one off custom samsung devices can use the same thing everyone else does, and they're well be true interoperability across all of the Google ecosystem. Sounds great right? Except a handful of over opinionated under informed samsung users see this as not not upporting the substratum theme app on oreo, despite the fact that 1) absolutely zero off the code was compatible, 2) they already have an app on the play store that everyone else uses, so keeping a separate one made literally no sense, and 3) it was SAMSUNG who is responsible for all of this!
So if you want to be mad at someone, be mad at samsung. They are the ones who changed everything and screwed everyone using theming not their own.
Ot, yoy can not be angry for having to spend a whole $2 on the Andromeda app because you CHOOSE not to root (you don't need Andromeda if you have root access) and appreciate the fact that leas than a cup of coffee or less than your weekly allowance you can have a vast array of gorgeous themes to use on your $800 oreo device that you can use without theme killer hacks, or dealing with knox. Or, you can just do a little reading about the systems you have such underinformed opinions on, root your device and get this for free as well as a ton of other awrsome possibilities. When youve done a little homework and are to root, do a xda search for my nick with "rom" on the end to get started ?️.
