Hello Everyone,
I really like the Moto G. Its awesome for the price and the battery is legendary. But should I really pick it over the Moto X? I'm buying either phone off contract. The beef I got with the Moto X is that its been around since 8/2013. That's not bad, but it can only mean that its successor will be announced sometime this summer. Now, should I buy a 6 month old model at $399 that will be more than likely upgraded in a few months? The Moto G on the other hand seems to be just getting started. What do you think?
I have both and find myself switching between them quite often.
Personally I like them both. They both have their goods and bad. I like the Moto G for its battery life and changeable backs. I like the X for the feel...which is wonderful, the screen, touch less controls, active notifications..basically everything the G doesn't have.
Motorola obviously had yo cut corners to get the G down to a good affordable price. But if you can do without everything that the X is offering and you want a few extra bucks in your pocket, grab the G.

I just placed an order for the moto g with a royal blue grip shell. I hope I don't regret my choice of color. Should have gone for the chalk one. Thanks for helping me decide!

That's the exact setup I have for my G. I'm sure you're gonna like it. Its definitely a great phone.

I did have a Droid Maxx which is pretty much a slightly bigger Moto X and ended up selling it and keeping the G. I don't know if it just me, but active notifications got really annoying and started bugging me more and more over time.
It definitely varies from user to user, but I can see how it can bug someone a bit.

It is great isn't it? Moto G feels so slick compared to much more expensive devices.
As a Moto x owner...and soon to be g owner (wife)...I think its simple. What do you want to spend? That should basically be the bottom line. The Moto x features if not wanted can be disabled easily.
Both great phones....both great battery life (edge going to the g)....but obviously the x is a bit better overall....so the decision should boil down to cost.
In my opinion anyway. My wife doesn't want to spend to much...so g is obvious choice for her.

I have a G and don't regret it one bit. Battery life is phenomenal IMO. The difference between the two for me isn't worth the $200.00 price gap.
Yellow back shell on the way too...

My Moto G is on its way and I'm sure I'm going to love it, but if I had the budget, I would go for the Moto X. I think its features are incredibly useful to me. The voice controls, for instance, are terrific. I've been trying to implement something similar in my Nexus 7, but the apps haven't been up to snuff and consume a lot of battery power. The Moto X, on the other hand, has this feature built-in thanks to its special hardware.
As for your concern regarding the release dates, the difference is only for a few months. Granted, a few months can mean a lot when it comes to smartphones, but I think you should instead go for the product that comes with the features that you want at the price point you're willing to pay for.
I find that my budget is the only thing that prevented me from getting the X. My G has been my best Android device yet, but that customizability is hard for me to pass up. I may even get an X in the future anyway.

Question for you MOTO guys. I have a Note 2 currently. I've been looking to trade it for a while now. I have a guy wanting to trade straight up for a 1 month old Droid Maxx (the new version). I was looking for some opinions... I have owned the Razr, Razr HD, Razr Maxx HD and all of those seemed to lag bad. Can someone give me some input on this? Thanks in advance...
Also, I'm a craigslist pro and know everything necessary for the trading part. I'm only looking for input on the devices...
I went from the Note 2 to the Maxx and couldn't be happier. I notice no performance difference at all. The Note has a bit nicer screen (color-wise) but otherwise i can think of nothing that gives it an edge.
Keep in mind though, you'll be going to a very locked down phone with almost no development community. If you're a flash addict, this isn't the device for you.

I had a feeling it was still like that. Without really researching it... I remember those days when I had the Droid X. Never could really truly change it all that much... I just want to be sure the lag that existed on the razr line isn't on this device. Hard to tell really by just looking at one at a store or I'd do that. The Maxx seems to be more "advanced", besides the screen. Wireless charging, the voice command features, etc. Is the camera a lot better than the previous models? They sucked bad.....
The maxx is just very stock android, which i prefer. I feel like the overlays like TW and Sense just haven't evolved much since the GB days. Yes, they're better than they were, but they aren't really leveraging everything android has to offer yet.
As far as the camera goes, i don't take a lot of pictures, as i have a camera for that. It does take decent pictures, but it doesn't have the features of the Samsung camera. It does ok for me, but a real picture-phile (i think i made that word up) will be disappointed.

The Maxx/Ultra run a very Vanillaish version of android which makes it really smooth and fast, not at all like the Razr HD. The camera is OK, not the best but they did just release a firmware update which improved the camera. Fwiw I have a Note II and a Maxx and the maxx is smoother and faster imho. While there isn't much development for the maxx you can get root and install recovery and used the xPosed framework which provides for some visual customization.

Picture-phile... That's a good one.... I take A LOT of pictures with my phone. It's just more convenient and the pictures are as good or better than any digital camera I've personally ever owned... TW on the Note 2 seems pretty important to me. I am probably one of the only people who actually USE the s-pen quite often and the way its built in to TW just works... I think based off what you've told me, I'm going to stick with my Note. I appreciate your fast responses. Have a great day.

Not a Note 2 user here...buy I've had a GS3 since its launch day and just upgraded to a Maxx...I fell in love with the Maxx as soon as I started using it...
Development is a little scarce to say the least...but I almost don't even care...the stock performance beats the pants off any ROM/kernel/OC'ing I ever experienced on my GS3...
I do need to take the time to root this thing in the next couple of days but I dont even feel the desire for much else other than basic root functions...

I was doing a comparison with my brother's N2 and my Maxx. This Maxx, with the LTE, was doing everything faster and smoother. Not once was his phone more responsive or as polished as the Maxx.

I vote to keep the Note 2.
I'm a former Droid Razr owner...you'd be hard pressed into talking me into any phone that had a locked bootloader like the Motorola devices. Plus the Motorola devices just don't have the sales volume of Samsung so that's another reason that the development community is small. I just love the large amount of custom ROMs that are available for the top selling phones.
For the guy who just came from the S3, I've got Paranoid Android with 4.4 on mine and everything opens pretty much instantaneously. I wouldn't mind having more (Cores/RAM/Storage/Screen) but it would really just be for show. I can wait for my contract to be up before I get the "Next Big Thing" (S5?)
That being said I don't have any other specific complaints about the new Moto Droid devices and I am mulling over getting a Droid Mini on for my stepdaughter for Christmas. Using Early Edge since Verizon took the early upgrade program away, and I promised her a new phone if she kept up GPA above 3.5. It seems to have the same CPU and memory specs as the Maxx and the Ultra, just with a smaller screen. She'll never root it or anything. I wouldn't mind getting her the Ultra or Maxx either but I'm not sure she wants a device that big.
Which leads to my other question, I guess the Maxx/Ultra/Mini are all in this forum since they seem to have the same hardware specs?

Correct, this forum covers all of the new Droid line.
Personally I would consider a Moto X for your daughter over the Droid Mini. The specs are about the same but the Moto X feels much better in hand and is a much more stylish device. The Droid Ultra is the worst of both worlds and should not even be considered IMO. I have the Droid Maxx and my wife has the Moto X, and both are great devices with slightly different strengths (battery/screen size on the Maxx, form factor/customization on the Moto X).

Stylish? Huh, she shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. I told her in July I wouldn't be able to get her another phone until May because Verizon had done away with the early upgrade program.
This is based on what I feel like paying. I am going above and beyond to do this for her. Even her mother encouraged me not to do it, but I feel the need to keep my original promise I made last Christmas. And I feel a little bad making her have a Droid Razr with a battery that broke, then an Xperia Play I had sitting around, and then (now) a used Droid Bionic I got off of Ebay.
So...
In the Edge program you basically pay for it every month, full retail divided by 24 months, so the Mini is appealing because full the retail price is only $349, or $14.54 per month. I think the Moto X was $549 so it would be $22.89 a month.
I can buy a 6 pack of Blue Moon with the leftover 8 dollars.
The other thing is that if I was going to go with a larger more expensive phone I like the G2 better than the MotoX. But I haven't looked at any reviews of the MotoX or the G2 either. I hated the HTC interface, and considering I will have to support her remotely, rather have an interface I can deal with. The S4 is not an option because it costs more than the other phones in the same class.
I could put my line on Edge, and do a hand-me-down with my S3 that works perfectly. But I would want an S4 out of that group and it would cost more. I'd rather wait until May when my contract is up and then I can re-up for another 2 year with either an S4 or S5.
So given all that, the Mini seems like a pretty good option considering I'm only paying $349 out of pocket and it has similar specs to all the other current gen Moto phones. But if she really wants a 5" phone we'll talk when she gets in town on Friday.

Didn't realize you were buying off contract ... in that case sure the Droid Mini is a very good choice. As for 5" displays, the Droid Maxx is now $499 off contract which is probably the best deal going in that class (price might be good online only though, not 100% sure). I think of the Moto X as the same class as the Droid Mini because the form factor is so small, although it does have a slightly larger display (4.7" vs. 4.3").

Update: The Maxx just dropped to $449 off-contract today. Amazing deal IMO.
So I'm thinking about the Moto G's epic battery life. Has any of you One S owners ever thought of upgrading to the Moto G (if it can be called upgrading).
Or would this be a complete idiot move? I love the HTC One S a lot, especially how thin it is, plus the camera is quite good. But the Moto G seems quite interesting from my point of view.
Anyone considered?

Ok, so I was bored, so I looked up the battery differences.
Talk Time
HTC One S 9: 42
Moto G 13: 41
Web Browsing
HTC One S 4: 03
Moto G 9: 04
Video Playback
HTC One S 9: 28
Moto G 6: 37
The Test for the HOS was way back in April 2012. So if you are running, say, Maximus HD you will do better.
If you keep unruly apps in check that wake the phone from deep sleep the ONe S, you can have really good battery life.
The Moto G test was December 14th 2013. So newer Android.
If you are wanting to do better watching videos, according to these tests, the One S is pretty friggin good at that.
Overall the Moto G will have a very noticeable better battery life. If that is really that important to you.
If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, then it would be a upgrade. I just don't know how practical it would be to switch.
It's not insane, as the HTC One S is discontinued anyways. Seems right to me.
I just bought my wife a Moto G. Nice phone - I think it's terrific. But definitely not worth the money if you're coming from a one s.

The battery life is really appealing. Plus latest Android without the need to root, so I can use banking Apps and Sky Go again.
Also, Argos in the UK has the 16GB up for only £118, waiting for stock.

If you continually find yourself running out of battery before the end of the day from use, Yes.
But If your phone lasts all day, and you charge it every night, then it might be a "mistake" to go with a phone that lasts 30% - 50% longer.
I mean what if you continually find yourself running the battery dead on the 2nd day with your new phone, so you end up charging it every night just like you did with your old phone. Then you didn't gain much.
Hi guys,
I dropped my Nexus 4 recently and cracked the front screen. The replacement will be pricey, pretty much about the same price as I would pay for a Moto G.
Reading up on it, it seems that the Moto G has its advantages over the Nexus 4: the main reason I am considering a replacement is because even though I do like the Nexus 4's aesthetic, it seems to be a little too fragile for my tastes.
So, just asking:
Do you think I should pay out to repair my Nexus, or trade it in and get a bit off an purchase of a Moto G?
Thanks.
Moto G beats Nexus 4 in benchmarks but most of your data will still be on the nexus. If the crack is a small one, I would get it fixed or buy a moto g and transfer all data. If it is a large one just buy the moto g

Moto G! Much better battery than nexus 4!
I can transfer my data using adb to the desktop, and the rest is backed up to the cloud, so I'm not too worried about that. Rather than a crack, it's more of the entire front shattering. The touch screen is pretty much unresponsive, unusable.
Yeah, I've heard of the much improved battery life, which is one of the reasons I'm considering the trade.
Hopefully it'll be more durable than the Nexus 4, which was noted to be remarkably fragile even for a smartphone.
Repair or replace really gets down to cost and how well you like the older product. If you really like the N4 and the repair costs are reasonable, that might drive you in one direction. However, if you're looking for a change and/or the costs of repair are significant, that could lead you to another choice.
I faced a similar dilemma and plumped for a Moto G and haven't missed my N4 at all. It's been two months now and no regrets.

Moto G. Better screen and battery life. Sure the N4 is slightly faster in GPU but I haven't missed it at all.

Depends on how expensive the repair is! If its more than 80~ish i'd say go for the Moto!

Get a Moto G together with one of Motorola's Grip Shells. This should improve durability without being too bulky.
Thanks for the answers!
I managed to check out a Moto G test unit for myself earlier and was quite impressed with it. I think I'll be trading in the broken Nexus for a new Moto G.
:good:
My Nexus 4 tragically died by Red Light of Death 2 weeks ago. I just got a Moto G and, honestly, it feels like an upgrade. I know it has less horsepower, but it feels so much more polished, better ergonomics (and won't slide off a table to try to kill itself!), better battery life, better camera colours (flash doesn't murder your subject), doesn't thermal throttle and use tons of battery due to heat issues, etc. I even find the voice quality better and the vibration better.
For equal price, I would get a new Moto G. If you have tons of data you don't want to lose, repair the N4 because pictures and work and stuff might be worth a lot to you. The N4 is still a good phone obviously, and I'd have no regrets keeping it if mine hadn't fried itself. But the Moto G delivers incredibly well on everything I give a damn about.
I don't know where people talk about Moto G beating N4 in benchmark. Clearly the N4 is faster, don't claim it unless you've used it. If you're referring to this: http://blog.gsmarena.com/moto-g-scores-higher-in-antutu-than-samsung-galaxy-s-iii/
It's wrong. Plain and simple. Use the phone first. The Nexus 4 with KitKat can do 21,000 points easily with completely stock, with overclocking up to 26,000points. These benchmarks does not tell the whole picture, the N4 will be faster overall for tasks, webpage rendering and gaming, there is no argument. Doesn't mean the Moto G is bad, with KitKat and ART enabled it should be pretty good too. Lastly, GSMArena is not a trustworthy source for this sort of things, they've shown that again and again.
If you are looking for durability the Moto G is going to be better and it have nano coating for water resistant, but you'll still need to protect the screen.

Wtf do all of you care bout is benchmarks? Benchmarks means NOTHING in real world use. Moto g to me as I had a nexus 4 better cause of the battery life I get with it even with cm11 I get 16-18 hours with 5-7 hours of screen time!!! The 2013 Moto G is good. Nice screen, no bloat, good battery. The new 2015 Moto E doesn't have as nice of a screen, but this fact, combined with a 64bit processor means it'll run well. This also gives it excellent battery life. Honestly, these are your 2 best options.

Thanks bro. I will consider those 2. Maybe the 2013 Moto G is better option. Btw I live in Phoenix, good to know we're neighborhoods LOL
my grandpa has a sumsung galaxy S6, i am suriprise, it suits him.
Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Moto G5 Plus, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Moto G5 Plus is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Worst Chinese phone I have ever purchased. Use and throw quality

Best phone i ever purchased.
Battery life and performance is amazing.
Stock android is very smooth way better than my galaxy S6.
Love the simplicity of the phone, no hardware issues from the device except few OS side issues
Phone is outstanding. Great battery life / form factor / build quality.
Price point combined makes this my favorite phone to date.
Nexus 6 note 5 s7edge.
I like this better than those.....
My only actual gripe would be that front speaker grill(cavity) gathers dust rather quickly and it's kind of annoying.....but I just blow the dust out from time to time....not that bad
Will see how long it lasts...but for price....beats the g5. I should have never spent an extra dime on my g5 and just got this but the 4g ram version. But even this works good enough.
GPS....no issues (g5....horrible),
Never gets hot...g5 got so hot that after 9 months it now bootloops when it gets to hot (no warning and no way to cool it down fast enough)...
Had some issues while driving (ups driver) where my gps would show on maps no connection (like the g5) but it pulls the address , loads and doesn't look position.
For a 200$ phone it is really good. Lg should learn something...word of bootloops in g6 and v20 is already out.
The Moto ..2 weeks in....much better than my g5 felt in it's first 2 weeks. Especially battery wise and heat wise.

Possibly the best value smartphone I've owned in all the devices since my first smartphone back in 2003 (HTC Canary)
Used to spend considerable money back in the day to have the latest phone with a USI, but no more, can't justify it, phones are much of a muchness these days.
Mine is doing great. Haven't even really tweaked it, didn't root it yet, and very few things I dislike. Can't get over the fact that the 2 g5 and my wife prior g4 are such a waist of lg techie....

I really like the G5 Plus, it could do with the sharpening knocking down on the rear camera but that is my only criticism really.
I'm a big fan of stock Android, really love the stock UI. Great performance and battery life, especially from a budget phone. Still not a fan of the ascending ringtone, but I can live with that.

Worth every penny
Coming from a OnePlus One, the Moto G5 Plus does pretty much everything that's expected of it. For the price, it's amazing an amazing device. My only gripe is the lack of a compass which makes it tricky to use Maps.

Umm... the Moto G5+ has a compass, much better than my Moto X Pure Edition had, and it seems very accurate. If your is off, maybe you need to calibrate it.

Only the US model gets the compass, not the global model.

Ahh... So we traded our NFC for a compass? Odd trade off.
After 3 month or so of use the vibration feature started to die for me (US unlocked g5 plus 4/64). If I move the phone / shake it, it might come back on for a while. Figure it has to be something loose? I never dropped my phone or done any damage I can recall to it... So it has to be poor manufacturing. This is the second Moto G that I had defects in, too (g3 some years ago). My bad luck or just cheaply made products (get what you pay for)?
Nonetheless, think I'm looking to a different company next time.

No service center near me. So I can either send it to them, sit without a phone for 10? 15? 20? Days... Or pay for a replacement along with the $200 hold.
I'll eventually send it out, after I get a replacement phone that isn't Moto. Google should have never sold Motorola to Lenovo. Their quality has tanked.

Well, I succumbed to the advance replacement and paid the $25 plus the $200 hold money to ensure I'd return a phone. For my troubles Motorola charged me an additional $25 for no reason. They assure me it's no problem, that when I return the broken one I'll get all 225 back (security hold plus the extra money for no reason).
I expected nothing but problems and Lenovo isnt letting me down. Grr.

Moto G5 Plus
I like Moto G5 Plus. Good budget phone, great performance with Snapdragon 625, good battery life, good display, except compass sensor every sensors are available. Using from 3 months now and I m satisfied with this phone.
The Moto G5 Plus is my 13th android phone, and I've been using it for about 3 months now. I think it's outstanding, and I expect I will use it for quite a long time.
It's not perfect. The screen and camera are mediocre. It's slightly too big, 5.2" is an awkward screen size IMO (the G5 was perfect at 5").
