It is replacement firmware that your phone is running. It usually offers cool features not found in the manufactures firmware.
Something like an Operating System for androids.
"Read-Only Memory" if Im not mistaken, its memory that cannot be changed but only processed or read by your device.

That's more in reference to a PC not a phone.
The ROM bit is more for PC yes.
Roms are basically operating systems for our androids. Its actually not ROM, but EPROM - Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory.

Rom = read only memory
In other words if you flash a Rom onto your phone, your practically loading another OS onto it. EI: android 2.2, 2.3, 3.0, 4.0, 4.1

Thankyou
looks great site
query
is there a difference between "ROM" and "platform"?
To be very honest with you, im not really sure but my understanding is that a platform would be symbian, android, windows mobile or iOS. Where the Rom is the operating system of these platforms, thats if their operating systems are called roms.
I hope you understand this.
It might not be correct, its only how i understand it.
Sent from my GT-S5300 using xda app-developers app
Yea you're right...mate
android symbian etc are platforms whereas ROM can be anything..that works as the Os for your phone
Roms may be customised to your wish
Whereas platforms can't be changed...if I'm not mistaken

Sorry but I want to understand something more, but in practice when you compile a rom what is being done ??
Does anyone know of a way to dual boot to where I can keep my current custom android ROM while also trying out the Ubuntu Touch OS developer preview? Just curious. Thank you in advance for any help given.

Okay, thank you. I was just curious. Anyone have idea on who is working on it or maybe an ETA. I know sometimes asking for an ETA is a touchy subject with some people so if so please disregard.

Guys I was wondering if there is a chance to install iOS ROM on Android device I found something but I haven't tested it yet and is there any good released version of this?
Sent from my LT18i using xda app-developers app
I hope you're kidding. iOS is closed source. It would be impossible as well as illegal to install it onto one of our devices.

We can wait if somebody port Ubuntu touch from HTC One... I hope...
I'd try it for sure
I've read that to build Ubuntu touch to our phone you only need to be able to compile from source like you would do it with cyanogen mod but as using cm as source use Ubuntu source and mix it with specific driver to our phone from CM sources

I don't know if it would be worth it. It isn't progressing very fast, I don't think there is even a dedicated app store yet.
It's like the HP touchpad, I really liked Web OS, but there just weren't very many apps. So I loaded Android on it.
Nothing is impossible.

anyone know whether you can use a touch ubuntu L720 s4 ..
is that I use in s3 (no 3g no wifi no network bluethoot) just to test ..
Now I would like to try it on my s4 .. thanks for the info
That would be cool, but i'd much rather see open webos ported to the HOS. That OS has always been my favorite.
