Touchscreen problems - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having problems with my new Nexus 5. They include freezing and ghost touches like I also have with my Nexus 7 and because I have similar software on both I am wondering if it may be some software interaction that is causing it.
Is there a log I can start that will tell me what is running or happening when the freezes happen?

Are you rooted, if so is it a custom or a stock ROM?

I assume what you mean by similar software that you are running custom kernel/ ROM?

Rooted, stock rom.

You can try a cat log or a factory reset just in case

No, sorry for being unclear. I am rooted running stock rom. 4.4.2 in the Nexus 5, 4.3 in the Nexus 7 2013 and Nexus 7 2012.
By similar software I actually meant similar installed apps, including SwiftKey (which I suspect because problems increased after recent updates) but also things like Greenify, Avast mobile AV with its firewall), LBE security master which could of course be likely suspects.

Would hate to do a factory reset. Besides the Nexus 5 is less than a week old.
What is a cat log?

Theres an app called logcat that you can download and it tells you everything that your phone is doing.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nolanlawson.logcat
This is what it would look like. Other members will have to tell you what to look for because I don't know, it's above my paygrade.

Thanks.

Rooting & custom roms

Let me start off by saying that I love and am thankful for all the hard work that developers put in to make awesome Roms. I've been rooting and flashing custom Roms since DAY 1 and enjoy it. But I've been noticing that when I flash a custom ROM its an upgrade for custom ability but a major downgrade in performance. For instance mobile data signal. Seems to get a lot slower than stock meaning OUT THE BOX. I've done comparisons in data using stock OUT THE BOX and all different custom roms and WOW what a big difference. Next is streaming videos. I noticed that OUT THE BOX I get that beautiful 1080p crispy no stutter image. Now when I root and flash a custom ROM the quality is NOT the same. Installing apps. Again OUT THE BOX stock installs apps from the play store way faster than when I'm running on a custom ROM. Sorry to say but I'm writing this using my nexus 5 that I just unrooted. I am NOT. I repeat I AM NOT TRYING TO DISCREDIT ANY Developers keep up the good work but please give me some feed back and let me know if I can help in any way to try and make these issues that I'm sure a lot of people are having. Keep up the good work developers!!!!!!

Disclaimer: I have no scientific evidence or tests of this at all. This is merely observations ive noticed. Could I be completely wrong? Yes. Do I think this is a deep conspiracy by devs to ruin all thats right with the world? No. Anyways...
I do notice that my wifi signal has been slightly weaker from the same places in my house. Could just be bad luck/router/etc. and its never really be debilitating or anything. I still maintain connection but it seems a solid 3-4 bar wifi connection from my bed room has always been a 1-2 bar connection on a custom ROM. Doesnt even seem to be unique to my N5, it was the same way on my One X as well.
I'm sure there is probably an easy fix, or if I really looked into it maybe I'm just going crazy and there is nothing wrong or different with my wifi. But i figured maybe someone else out there is dealing with the same situation, or at least maybe theres a big secret wifi fix that I have been oblivious to all these years lol
THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT WORK XDA DEVS. I cant say that enough though, TBH. Ive used this site since I had a HTC Fuze way back in the day, then onto my Samsung Galaxy S Captivate, and the work and knowledge on here is outstanding.
When you say "custom rom" do you mean "aosp based"? Because it wouldn't makes sense that this issue exists on "stock based" custom roms

Its not just this phone my s1 s2 s3 n4 s4 all seem to have issues with video streaming quality and signal after flashing a custom ROM. Test it for yourself. But you have to compare it with out the box version

I can understand how flashing an aosp rom with perhaps no source for gpu or video drivers could have a problem with video playback. This was the case on the s3.
I can also understand how having to use OpenRIL on an aosp build could cause radio performance to suffer.
However a custom rom which is based on stock, using a stock RIL, using stock drivers should not exhibit these issues compared to stock itself. Even if it is deodexed. This has been the case on all the android devices I have rooted, flashed stock roms on or even built roms for. Including the N5 and the S3.
If you think this is happening on all the devices you own, its either something to do with your choice of rom or its something you do to all your phones that causes these issues. There's no reason why a custom rom based on stock would under perform w
compared to stock, unless you're picking something that has been incorrectly tweaked or you've incorrectly tweaked yourself

I am also seeing that difference. My phone was constantly freezing when opening apps. Also when trying to take a picture, if I move the camera too fast, it seems like the phone can't keep up and reboots itself. So I went back to stock everything and kept my boot loader unlocked. Everything seems to be working just fine now. Its weird.

These issues would usually be related with kernel and voltage

This is a useless thread. Op if you really believe that stock based Roms are devaluing the performance of your phone then flash back to bone stock and be done. Problem solved, we can close this thread.

This article is totally irrelevant to this conversation because it's comparing 2 different versions of Android. We only have 4.4 roms for this phone. You're comparing different 4.4 roms to each other, not different versions of Android.

Unknown error code during application install: -24

Hello everyone,
I always follow this rule when I buy a new device. I use the stock rom/kernel without root for the first 2-3 weeks just so that there's no hardware error popping up and also because I want to have that clean stock experience with each device I own. After I feel the time is right, I root it and then keep on flashing every now and then. So ATM, I'm fully stock!
I've been experiencing this particular problem/error while installing apps from the Play Store : Unknown error code during application install: -24
I have faced this error 3 times till now and sadly all of them have popped up while installing "PAID" apps.
Till now it has occurred with
1. Nova Launcher Prime
2. WiFi File Transfer Pro
3. Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour
SS: http://www.vinu.info/f/u/24Screenshot_2014-03-06-20-30-47.png
I couldn't even get a refund on the first two apps as the 15 minutes window had passed while I was searching for a fix. I like to support the devs but this is really irritating!
I've literally searched for hours finding a solution for this and the only thing which I get is : FACTORY RESET.
If you're rooted, then you can delete the package from /data/app/ or /data/data/ and solve it within few seconds. However, if you're unrooted, you're only left with Factory Reset.
I am currently on ART and I have tried shifting to dalvic but that doesn't solve the problem. I was using a HTC One X (4.2.2) previously and I have never faced this problem even once. So I'm beginning to think it's a KitKat related issue?
I have already performed a factory reset twice and I really don't find it a viable option now. I guess it's time to root now and begin flashing!? :cyclops:
If you guys have any info/solution regarding this problem, please share!
Thank you for your time!
It happens randomly. Have you tried deleting your Google account and adding it back? Fixes it for me every time this happens (and it's not a KitKat related issue)

Thanks for the suggestion. However, it didn't solve the issue.
I know it happens randomly and I may have been extremely unlucky to face this issue 3 times in a month!
PS: There are tons of people who don't root their phones, so each time something like this happens we have to wipe it completely?
It seems to me doing a wipe is your only option :/

Constant SMS Failed to send after 4.4.3 Update?

Hey guys,
For about two days now, ever since I updated my Nexus 5 (running on T-Mobile) to 4.4.3 using the OTA, Google Hangouts is failing to send texts in phases. For one hour or so it'll fail every other text until I resend it, then after that it works for a few hours again perfectly fine, then back to failing some.
I'm going to try using Evolve SMS for a bit to see if it happens there, but something tells me this isn't Hangouts' fault.
I am rooted and have a custom recovery, but it's been that way for months (Before 4.4.3 update) and I doubt would affect it.
Thanks,
David
Try cheating the cache in hangouts. If that doesn't work uninstall it, reboot, and then reinstall it from play store

I'll do that, I just cleared my cache/dalvik too. Unfortunately Hangouts is hardwired into stock so I can only uninstall updates, but if it acts up again I'll try that.

I do, although I'll use that as a last resort at the moment haha. Still think it's a more widespread-than hangouts problem.

Does 4.4.4 fixes the audio bug when recording videos?

New update again.
4.4.3 didn't fix the audio bug when recording videos (that background hiss or noise that we could hear if there was no noises or voices).
Can people check now again with the new update?
Thanks.
unfortunately my nexus told me he is up to date with 4.4.3 :<

It's not "definitely a hardware issue ". Them not fixing it doesn't mean it's hardware. All symptoms point to software.
Google haven't even acknowledged an issue and that is why it's not fixed.

No, it does not fix it.
Can you please make a recording and show us? A fan makes a nice sound to hear what is wrong.
This is the Nexus 5 on 4.4.4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tzrClyzqE8
and this is the Samsung Note 4.1.2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-a_O09Gj-w
Placed at the same location, give or take a centimeter.
I've just done the recording with a Samsung S and a ZTE blade at the exact same spot but I have yet to upload it but they sound as normal as the Note and not like the Garble from the Nexus 5.

Well... I remember that i HAD this thing on stock and in earlier slimkat builds (it was like underwater with sound distortions). And this patch fixed the problem. Just to be sure if i don't have placebo or smth i put stock mic settings. But(!) i couldn't get this on latest slimkat build! Videos recorded with Google Camera app.
with fix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-QbNpZDrFk&feature=youtu.be
w/o fix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnO478hxRqs&feature=youtu.be
You can hear that with fix it sounds more clear and less loud, but w/o it sounds like i'm trying to smash table by my fingers (very loud and little echo). Distance between sound source and telephone is minimal.
Weird.
If it was software it should have been already fixed.
Google is aware of the issue because on their forums there was a huge thread about this issue since November, and the moderators said they were aware of this issue and were working on it.

You've been saying that always, but I haven't seen any developer fix it with a patch.
Not even Google has fixed it with updates. Do you really believe the all powerful Google can't fix it? They have great software engineers and developers, yet still no solution.
In the Google forums everyone keeps saying it's a hardware problem and I believe that.
It looks like Google won't/can't fix the issue, so it's not software, or they could have already fixed it.
Well exactly 0 of the symptoms point to a hardware issue. If it was a hardware issue, why haven't they updated the nexus 5 with a new microphone?

Same reason LG hasn't updated the bad GPS of the G2 or the antenna location to fix the cell reception issues.
Same reason Apple didn't update the antenna issue on the iPhone 4 until the next model iPhone 4S.
Same reason OnePlus won't update the screens on their phone to fix the yellow tint issue.
Same reason they haven't updated the Nexus 5 to include a stronger vibration motor.
Same reason they haven't updated the Nexus 7 2013 with a new screen to fix the touchscreen issue.
Enough with the software issue seriously.

Can't Connect to Camera on Lollipop

Ever since I upgraded to 5.0, my phone won't connect to the camera. The problem has been consistent across different roms and happens with every camera app. I even tried restoring to my nandroid of 4.4, but it still didn't work.
I thought that maybe it had something to do with how I upgraded: I just flashed it like any other room. Am I the only one experiencing this problem and does anyone know of a way to fix it?

Does it not work at all, ever? I've had the "cannot connect to camera" issue on Lollipop but just once and it was after I'd used the flashlight from quick settings (a known problem).
If it doesn't work at all then it sounds more like a hardware problem. The best way to confirm that would be a factory reset and test before installing any third party applications.
I've same problem with the camera
