Is it safe to download Apps (.apk) from third party websites?

Here I want to ask a question:
If due to any reason, I am not able to download app from official Play Store, Is it safe to download Apps (.apk) from third party websites?
For example Viber is not compatible with my Nexus 7 (Wi-Fi only) device and I have downloaded it from a third party website. Is it safe to use? Please advise.

Yes and no. if you know source yes else no.
I would suggest enable firewall and block unwanted traffic to and fro.
Pressing THANKS easier than typing.

Sometimes I download apps from 4shared but you got to read before you install because sometimes it will say 'this may cost you money' so it will probably go on your bill and try not to get installers because they can be dangerous and infectous

Read permissions and be smart. Go to play store web page and see the real app permissions and compare it the the one you download. Also be smart. A wallpaper app shouldn't have access to your call logs or phone identity.
With that said not all apps on the play store are safe as well. As malicious apps are rare and often removed, tons of apps are collecting important data and storing it. Do posted above. Install afwall and block internet access to shady apps then enjoy.

Antivirus like avg free for me tells apps that requires push adverts, malicious etc. So I can uninstall those.

Best App for Tracking Lost Phone

Hi all,
Can someone suggest the best app for locating a lost android phone?
After nearly loosing my S4 last night (running for a bus, fell out my pocket and ended up in a ditch...fortunately I bussed back as a last hope and found it!!!) I am searching for the beat app for this.
Thanks for any suggestions..

Almost all antivirus companies have device tracking enabled through web.if you configured and recalled the data.you can track the location of phone and can remote swipe/sms and many more.I have tested that using kaspersky and NOD32 and webroot.this is the only chance to track else after stolen people throw away SIM,format the phone or change the IMEI so impossible to track back.
I'm using avast! (Free) It has quite an extensive lost/stolen system built into it aswell as all the antivirus stuff. One thing I like about avast! (Not sure who else has this) it has a setting called 'Geo fencing'. Once set, if your phone leaves a, user set, distance from your current point, it automatically locks your phone and triggers any other protection activities, and sends a SMS to a pre-set cell number. Good for night clubs or busy shopping malls incase you get pick pocketed.

Avast! is pretty good when it comes to tracking.
Thanks for suggestions. Don't necessarily wanna install an anti virus on the phone.. Find they slow it down ( I know some people may disagree, but that's not the topic)

Android now has a built in phone locator which can be activated in Settings > Security > Device administrators. Check Android Device Manager.
Uses Google's push service so it doesnt poll battery.
Link to web interface: https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager
In addition, I use AndroidLost from Play Store. Runs through Google servers so no background usage. Has an advanced plethora of controls on the web interface. Check it out.
Google Device Manager
I have enjoyed using Google Device Manager. It has the ability to ring my phone for 5 mintues so I can find it easier. As well as the ability to locate it. Although like everything else depends on data connection. So if I lost in a park with a dead battery... NO DICE.

AndroidLost supports SMS controls. You could send an SMS message to activate GPS and auto reply the location, or you could send a message to enable WiFi/data and track that way.

Try Google Device Manager if you don't want to deal with a whole antivirus
Thank you for all the suggestions !! I'll look into each one as soon as i get a moment. I'm sure others will benefit from these as well

agreed, i use android device manager. used to use the samsung version, but now that google offers it then i'll use that one.
I used to use Avast, but now I can just use Google's Device Manager or even CyanogenMod's which is crude for now.
Device manager seems to work well. It allows you to locate the device from another browser using Google maps, allows yo to ring the phone even if it's on vibrate or silent and once set up allows you too lock/erase all data from it.

cerberus is the best option for little money ( 3 € ) can have about 5 devices, and allows for many things, what I'm wearing and not disappointed.
Check out "Wheres my droid" from the play store. It is full of great features. Can set up triggers from text or phone numbers to make it ring. You can get is location from sending a specific text to your phone. You can lock it down, take a pic and even wipe it clean. Great app

Actually, this is a really important point. Which of these apps are still able to perform their advertized functions after it is being lost? Supposedly, whoever is in possession of the phone will through out SIM card and do a factory reset so all apps that use google services will not work anymore as they are Signed out... Are apps from antivirus suites immune to this?

[VIRUS]Unsafe App Stores

List any app provider you've found to be malicious. Include app store and individual app(s) versions. Also how they are infective or defective. This is only meant to spread awareness, not to bash certain application developers. Thanks for your help
Edit: i.e.- when searching aptoide for app in a particular store, and scroll down to comments to double check authenticity, the comments are combined for every version of the app in that store, and the app can be added to another store- that's why I'm interested in version #
Please no general comments

Black market has the most viruses IMO... Safest app provider is aptoide, hands down
I always use coolmarket, its chinese but virus free

App Stores
Best to stick to Google Play, but some people (like me) are not allowed to spend (as i'm only 14). i have to use apk's for some apps that i cant live without like nova launcher and pocket casts.
I'd say the Swiftkey data logging thing is probably the riskiest. Best to stick to Google Keyboard or Sense keyboard
Just my 2 pence
Getapk I've been using for two years now no problems yet and is updated with newest apps daily

[How to] Microsoft Office android preview on phones.

Need to be rooted.
Ok the new MS word, PowerPoint, and Excel are only for beta testers using a tablet. I'm going to show you how to run in on phones as well.
1. Sign up to be a beta tester here http://www.instant.ly/s/w7taW/nav?sessionId=Qyqg66BR53BOHZ7oL8Dn0wwd#p/186a0 Edit MS removed beta tester site don't know why but here is a new link to get office by Google plus
http://blogs.office.com/2014/11/26/get-office-android-preview-apps/
2. Wait for MS to send you an email to beta test.
3. Download market helper. Google the apk. This allows you to change your device so the play store will think your phone is let's say a tablet.
4. Try to download the office apps via the email MS sent you. It should work BUT....
5. When you open let's say Word or any of them it will be huge and won't fit your resolution not sure about quad hd but 1080p is to small. So download app settings from xposed. This allows you to change the dpi of any app you have on your phone. Change all the MS apps to your desired dpi. My opinion for 1080p is change it to 380 dpi.
And that is it. ENJOY!!
ALSO MS SAYS YOU CAN'T RUN IT WITH lollipop but I never tested so just fyi.

You dont have xposed framework in lollipop...so if it huge you can use app settings

[Q] Fitness app no sync to phone needed gear 2 tizen

Hi,
I have been looking around and still can't find a fitness app that does not require to be syncing with your phone. The only thing it need is a calorie counter and a continuous HR monitor.
Can anyone help me out?
Heart Rate Monitor does what you ask. It can sync with the phone but it works also standalone.
Is it a continuous HR monitor or you have to click every time to let it check? The intention is to use is it indoor and outdoor fitness and sporting activities
Sent from my SM-N900 using XDA Free mobile app
It can run with a fixed interval or continuously, you don't have to click to let it check.
Ok, in my country I am not able to find that app. Will be looking further to be able to download it for my gear 2
