Sprint Nexus 5 Sim - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Nexus 5 arrived today and I was pretty excited to activate it until I found out that Sprint sent me the wrong sim card. *Sim cards are now on backorder with Sprint. *Does anybody have one lying around that they would be willing to send me?

Call around to some local stores. You may end up calling quite a few before you find one.

I have one from my Old account that I canceled. I'm on ST now. If you need it PM me.

The Sprint stores that have them are the ones that repair phones. Only Sprint repair stores have them to give.

Thanks jdawg0024! PM sent. I apologize if you receive two messages from me. Wasn't sure if the first went out so I sent a second. Thanks again!
oaliaso and CRIME INC. I did call all the local Sprint stores and Best Buy locations to no avail. Thanks for the tip though.

Was in the same boat, went to the local corporate store and they gave me a SIM card right away. I would call ahead just in case though, they only seem to keep a few of them in the store and order them as they need them.

I don't have sprint and never will, but I'm just curious. Why is it such a hassle to get a sim card? With any other carrier, I just walk into a store and they hand me one.

How can a service provider sell service without SIM cards? That's like selling a car without the keys to start it. No wonder people are jumping ship on Sprint like crazy.

Because this is the first phone that Sprint has ever allowed on their network that was bought from another source (google play store) other than themselves. Not to mention they're CDMA / LTE and this is the first experience as a company that they had to deal with people actually getting sim cards to activate / use their phones instead of replacing one they already have.

To expand a touch on lilotimz statement. All Sprint branded devices that require a sim card come with a sim card in the box from the factory. The N5 is the first non-Sprint branded device most stores will encounter.

Cause they are terrible, I used to work for them. Hell, I even carried a T-Mobile phone because service was so bad... From dialup 3g, to spotty lte that's slower than Tmobile hspa, to dropped calls.
And Sims, every store were dicks about those. Even if they had any, they wouldn't give them out unless they were making money, was insane! Basically, corporate didn't send many of those and very few phones need them. So, they save them for activations... If a customer needs them, nope, upgrade... Nope.

Just another reason to not switch to sprint.

You can use gs4 SIM and iphone 5 SIM according to Sprint

Nexus 5 on Sprint MVNO's?

Now that we know the Nexus 5 can be activated for use on Sprint, I was curious as to whether we might be able to activate the phone to work on Sprint MVNOs (e.g. Ting, Voyager Mobile). Can anyone tell whether that would be the case?
I plan to get a nexus 5 and use it on ringplus (a sprint mvno) and some people have ordered it to try to activate it. I'm going to wait on the news from them just to be safe.

I'm not sure, but the Nexus 5 is unlocked and can be directly purchased from the Play Store instead of Sprint.
Who knows...we'll hear from the guinea-pigs soon enough.

I'll gunea-pig it for you. I bought the phone, and it will be here on Monday. The foreseeable problem that I see will be obtaining an LTE micro sim for sprint, going to go and try to sweet talk a sprint rep into giving me one.

You'll have better luck at a reseller (RadioShack, Walmart, Best Buy, etc) because they're minimum wage and don't care as much

Thanks for the heads up. I will give them a shot first. Texted one of my buddies that work at Best Buy.
Well first up doesn't work directly with their IMEI checker for ring+. Created a support ticket and will let you know what happens.
Ting has already come out and explicitly said that Sprint won't allow it on their network, I presume it will be the same for all Sprint MVNOs.

That declaration was made early on by a Ting employee but they are hedging on it now. NOW, they are saying that they have not got the final word from Sprint yet and don't expect to know anything until after Sprint rolls out the N5 on Nov 8.
Not looking good
From a ring+ rep
"We just contacted Sprint, and unfortunately we confirmed with them that we're not permitted to activate the Nexus 5 or any other Google phone - apparently Google has requested that Sprint not allow us to activate/distribute any Google phones. We apologize for the inconvenience."
*Edit after further research this does not appear to be the case.

Spoke to a dude in a Sprint store in my town and he said that would be no problem to pick up a sim for the Nexus 5 (for free) but they just hadn't received the shipment yet. Hopefully, I can get this working with Voyager Mobile. Unfortunately, everything has to be done over the phone and the two people I've ever spoken to from support never seemed too knowledgeable/friendly I guess I can always switch over to RingPlus, though...
Works on Sprint out of the box but I got a random reboot issue with sprint and had ot go back to AT&T sim. Also you must set the radio to GLOBAL for it to work.

Have to sell my Nexus 5, what phone to get on VZW?

Man this sucks so hard. I was hoping to switch from Verizon to T-mobile but the service at home for me is not going to cut it. Is anyone else in the same boat as me? I'm looking at the Moto X dev edition and the G2, not sure which one will be the best choice after giving up my N5
I like the G2 but I think I would get more out of the Moto X. Would have to play with both side by side to make a final choice though.
sure you can't try AT&T? hate to see you not be able to use such a good phone because of the service. probably be seeing close to the same prices if you go with Verizon.
Use pre paid plan on go phone I belive it's called. Try for 1 month. I think it's $30?? This is for att

I would get the Note 3 if you can handle the size, I played around with it a little at Best Buy and fell in love. I'm on Verizon so I never had the opportunity to get the Nexus 5, so I will be getting the Note 3 later this week. I might sell it when Google's Verizon project comes out next year, depending what the specs are and how much I like the Note 3.
Keep in mind they do have a Note 3 developer edition.
And if you decide the Note 3 is too big for you, I'd get the G2.
Moto X all the way.
Yeah the only reason I'll stick with Verizon is because I have the unlimited $30 data. :'(

That is if they'll let you keep it if you upgrade your phone. Been hearing they've been basically trying to force people off the unlimited plans in such a way.
If by "home" you mean your actual house, why not just keep your baby and get better signal?
Have you looked into cellular boosters?
Buying straight from a store is probably going to eat your pockets out and then some, so I would suggest using eBay.
I run AT&T and have horrid service at home, but luckily AT&T has a "Microcell" cell booster that I paid maybe $99 for, but I get full bars everywhere in my house. Well worth it.
Here's one for T-Mobile I found on eBay ending in 2 days as of this reply.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/T-Mobile-Nextivity-Cel-Fi-indoor-signal-booster-extender-/331062576666
I'd hate to see you have to give up your N5, honestly...
I have a similar problem.
Tried Tmobile, no service
Tried Straight Talk, no service
Verizon isn't compatible
Page Plus won't work wither
I'm gonna try out AT&T but IDK if that will work either
I live in a rural area, and it seems like Verizon would be the best carrier for me.
I looked up a Tmobile booster but the prices are ridiculous and I saw a topic earlier where someone bought one but it wasn't working properly with their Nexus 5. I love my Nexus 5 and don't want to give it up, but I might not have a choice.
As a t mo subscriber for 2+ years its terrible anywhere rural. Had ATT Sprint and Verizon prior. Only Verizon was strong in NH. ATT was second and sprint and T mo are on par with each other. Hence the cheap plans. Thankfully I live not in a rural area anymore in terms of service.
That being said its terrible Verizon opted out not being part of the N5.
Would suggest trying ATT and if that fails if you have the cash get an S4 or HTC One. My HTC One had Sim issue and since I had cracked screen no warranty help so now I have a N5.
Since Verizon doesn't use Sim card...? Maybe HTC one is best for you then use a ROM to get 4.4.
The boom sound and the screen is best in the biz IMHO.

Exact same phone, the one at Best Buy just comes with an $100 SIM card.
This is one of the most appealing features of this phone that has so far gone pretty much unrecognized. You can take this single model and jump to most major and prepaid carriers.

I have the nexus from Sprint and can personally verify it works with a prepaid att straight talk Sim card. FYI the sprint sold phone does not include the Sim tray key.

As long as you are paying full price, you should be able to get it without a Sprint account. It will of course depend on whether the sales person you deal with decides to be a jerk or not.

So you just stick an AT&T SIM card in there and it'll automatically switch to it? Was your phone already activated on the Sprint network? I'm curious since Sprint would tie in with the ESN activation for CDMA. If it's just as simple as putting in an AT&T or Tmobile SIM, then I'm sure getting it!

I bought a Nexus 5 from Best Buy and I'm an AT&T customer. Yes, the phone will automatically connect to AT&T's network. It took a few minutes to convince the BB employee that the phone would work on AT&T. They also insisted it was store policy that they activate every phone they sell, so I had to pay the $30 activation fee.

I can't remember specifics but I had to change the settings here back to LTE a couple of times. For some reason it wouldn't stick after the first reboot. I can't retest it because my straight talk Sim is not active right now. I can assure you it works relatively easily though.

because all N5's sold in North America are the same model, with the same frequencies (D820), the only thing that may have to be changed is the APN.
this is not like other Sprint specific devices like the G2 (LS980) vs the AT&T G2 (D800)
AT&T - D800
GSM 850/900/1800/1900
UMTS 850/1900/2100
LTE 1900(2)/1700(4)/850(5)/700(17)
Sprint - LS980
GSM 850/1900
CDMA 800/850/1900
UMTS 850/1900
LTE 1900(25)/800(26)/2500(41)

That would have been awesome, I don't understand why everybody charges $100 more unless Google really is taking a hit on each one they sell.
Glad you got them to price match, they wouldn't budge for me. Brought them a few receipts where other people did it, brought them the price printed. They just kept telling me it's not the same phone, got to the point where I was just tired of wasting my time with them and didn't want to wait on the Play Store so I just got it at full price.

I don't think Google is necessarily taking a hit but I do think they are selling them just slightly above cost. You have to remember that Google isnt a electronic sales company like Apple, they make all of their profits from there data mining and advertising business. Android is just another medium to collect data and deliver ads. So they could give these away for free and still benefit. However companies like best buy and sprint make their money off of retail sales and cell phone plans. So they are trying to maximize profits that way.
Anyways bummer that they didn't match for you. I guess I just got luck. I walked in not feeling to confident with my play store ad. They were cool but hesitant. After the guy asked his manager he said that they normally wouldn't match the play store but were will to make an exception.
I am in the same boat but for T Mobile. Anyone know if this phone will work for T Mobile as well? I would believe so but I want to make especially if BB is going to charge me an activation fee.

Sim Card Required for Sprint?

I was planning on ordering an unlocked N5 to use on Sprint for a few months before going to ATT. As far as I understood this required a sprint sim so I called sprint before and was able to order 1. For whatever reason they canceled my original order so I called back in today and now they are telling me the sim isn't available and isn't needed to activate the device, only if I intend to use it internationally. Any truth to that or are they just up to speed on what needs to be done. I've talked to 3 people at this point, including a supervisor, all of which said this.

Yes there needs to be a sim in the phone. They probably won't give you one until you have the phone in hand. Order it and when it arrives, take it to the sprint store and ask them to activate it. They will have to install a sim to get it working.

Until i see LTE on my friends phone i will continue to bash them, i also have a premium form access to a site called S4GRU
Sprint Filed their permits 9 Months late compared to Verizon,AT&T,T-mobile, it appears they also don't know how to file a permit correctly as most of the cell sites are marked Plans need correction. 3G speeds are nothing but dailup. So until i see LTE or 3G has been improved i will continue to bash them :good: they think Hawaii isn't a priority market and LTE should arrive in Q3 2015, Clearwire thought it was and id be damn better to let them take over sprint instead of sprint taking over them.
Never said they were perfect bro. But they're good to me. Sorry you got screwed. I've been with them for a decade with no complaints. Who you with now?

Sprint has been told to say its locked....or they don't know much about the nexus 5 yet... Every tech/customer support person I have talked to or chatted with has said its locked..blah blah blah...but its not...there Sim card is the only thing that ties the N5 to sprint
Also 350 for a completely unlocked superphone is insanely cheap...don't buy second hand

I kinda figured that...thats why I came here to ask. I can't help buying second hand....lol. I have a new 32gb one on At&t and I just can't afford another new one..every little bit saved helps these days.

Trying to join Sprint as a new customer CONFUSION everywhere! Lol

Call Sprint store. Tell me they can't activate a new phone I have to purchase from them. Tell them the phone is unlocked and works on Sprint they said they don't know how to do it.
Call second Sprint store ask for the IMEI number and tell me they can't find a record for it, cant activate it, they are busy sorry goodbye.
Call Corporate office tell me yes I can activate it but this phone does not qualify for a month to month service and even though it's unlocked I will be locked into a 2 year contract as a new customer.
Does that sound right? I only have 14 days to decide if I want to stick with the service? How could I be hit with a penalty for leaving if they have given me nothing up front?

Call Corporate office tell me yes I can activate it but this phone does not qualify for a month to month service and even though it's unlocked I will be locked into a 2 year contract as a new customer.
Does that sound right?

And yet, you still want to be with Sprint. I'm so lost.
From what I've heard, you can't bring your own phone to sprint's month to month service. You can if you sign a contract though, but you knew that already.

Does that sound right? I only have 14 days to decide if I want to stick with the service? How could I be hit with a penalty for leaving if they have given me nothing up front?

This is your chance to run far away. There are tons of other services that provide better pricing and service than Sprint, unless you're in that 5% of the country that Sprint would get better service, somehow.
It's all because of my job. I work in a large concrete building where there is ZERO AT&T service.
Verizon and Boost Mobile work well, so since Boost uses Sprint towers I was looking to join them.
Can you activate this phone on Boost Mobile? I need another suggestion along those lines.

Nope. Boost requires you to buy a phone from them. Why not just use Ting?

If you want to use the Sprint network with your Nexus 5, try signing up with Ting.com (a Sprint MVNO). They're very responsive to users and prices are much better than Sprint's. You'll need to order a Sprint SIM from them for $10 unless you can pick one up elsewhere.
It will work on sprint. You have to get a LTE sim card from them. Do not let them tell you otherwise. That's all you need. Pop it in and reboot. I'd call sprint and ask them to send you one.

Would they have to add the MEID for 1x/EVDO or all Nexus 5s in their database already? A prepaid option like Ting may be a good way to go but if you could figure it out how to flash to Page Plus that would be cool too.

Are you a masochist? If I were you I would run as far away as possible from Sprint. You said you don't get AT&T coverage at work. What about T-Mobile?

I was wondering that myself. If T-Mobile has good 3/4g in your area it will be a great experience on this phone.

none of that is correct. i assume you have a 32gig model. you must remove the last number from the imei and the system will recognize it. you can go on the new month to month framily plan since you are bringing your own device. bringing your own device is the same as purchasing one through the new easy pay program (where you have no contract, just obligated to pay phone off).
Hey and you can join my framily while your at it. Your bill would be $40 a or lower at the base. PM me for details. ?

You didn't buy your N5 from T-mo by any chance, did you? There have been issues with activating N5 purchased from T-mo, onto Sprint because Sprint didn't have those IMEIs loaded into their system (phones purchased from google had that issue for the first few days after launch, but it was quickly addressed. But phones purchased from T-mo reportedly still have the issue)
