Hey Guys! So I'm coming from a HTC Incredible, Incredible 2, Rezound, and One and now here I am with a new Droid Maxx and I'm trying to figure out just what I need to do in order to root his badboy and get all this crap that Verizon put on it off. I'm looking around and I'm seeing a few different threads about rooting but not to much about custom roms. What I'd be looking to accomplish is either 4.2 or 4.4, don't care to much which one but I want all this bloat gone as well as the ability to do a WiFi tether without giving Verizon even more money per month like I used to do on my HTC devices. Thanks in advance peeps!

rooting depends on whether you are still on JellyBean 4.2.2 or not. If so make sure your system version is 12.15.15 then head on over to the original development section and use RockMyMoto to get root. Check out the SlapMyMoto thread too and use MotoWpNoMo to turn write protection off permanently. If you're already on Kit Kat then you're out of luck for the time being as there is no direct root for KK and no way to downgrade to 4.2.2 to get root.
As for custom ROMs... there aren't any and you'll have to use TiBu to debloat your phone. Other than that welcome to the Maxx.

Thanks so much for the information! I am still on 4.2.2 and I just checked my version and it is in fact 12.15.15. I'll check out those threads and get all this crap off my phone lol. Once I do this, if we get an OTA 4.4 will I still be able to upgrade?
Side question, why the lack of ROMS? Is the phone not mod friendly? I remember having an HTC it seemed like I had a TON of ROM choices.

You'll still be able to upgrade. It just takes jumping through a few hoops to keep root after the upgrade.
Moto kind of pushed the Moto X more than the Maxx/Ultra since it is multi-carrier so more people have the X and hence, more development. The lack of an unlocked bootloader has really hurt the VZW droids.
Awesome, the phone is incredible so I'll be happy with just ditching the bloat...none of the HTCs that I had come close to this as far as battery life is concerned...not even when I put an extended battery on them. Needless to say I'm super happy with the phone

Sorry to hijack, but you are answering something right along the lines of what I've been searching for. I've done all OTA updates, and I'm showing Android 4.2.2. I'm then showing 12.15.15.obake_maxx_version for system. I'm guessing then that kitkat was only something a person could forcefully update towards. As in it's not yet available via an OTA?
Hey, so KK was only available for a short time before VZ pulled the update due to issues. You can still get it here by jumping through some hoops, and you can get it while retaining root by jumping through flaming hoops with 3 suicidal midgets strapped to your back. That being said the root process is a bit lengthy, compared to an HTC device, but was super simple with the amount of instruction given by our devs

I'm searching for a downgrade method so that I may use JCase's tethered root method on my Droid Maxx (Android Version 4.4).
While going through his method, I received a response that JCase deemed would indicate a need to downgrade, please redirect me if such a thread exists.
Apparently no threads about this downgrade.
Have you read all this thread by @jcase [Root/Write Protection Bypass] Droid Ultra/Maxx/Mini
Try this page : Mozart_WayneKent_Moto
After reading some posts, once you're KK 19.6.3, you cannot downgrade 19.5.3

Thank you for your response, Philos64.
The thread you linked is of no use to me, as I have not had root on my Droid prior to the 4.4 update.
In regard to the rumor of impossibility, I had heard similar, though JCase referred to it in such a nonchalant manner that I assumed it was not only possible, but that there was an established method.
I suppose I'll return to the threads, thank you for your time.
After searching to another website, Apparently you can do this using FXZ or House of Moto without bricking the phone.) Second, the root does not survive boot, and does not allow RW of the system partition => Motorola Droid MAXX
But you need to read posts quietly before doing something
Take your time
And no problem for my time, that's why I'm here for helping members

I've been searching for a good 4 hours now, I'll make sure to thank you.
I have a Cricket Moto G that I want to flash to the retail ROM. I know that the bootloader can be unlocked using sunshine but I want to know if anyone else has successfully flashed their Moto G like this. Excuse my ignorance, I just want to get a little feedback before attempting this myself.
wondering the same. have you unlocked your bootloader yet? and are you talking about the moto g original or the lte model?

No, I haven't unlocked the bootloader yet. This is my girlfriend's phone and I don't want to attempt messing with it until I have a few more answers. It is an original 2013 model.

It appears that there was a loophole for older Moto Gs running 4.4.3 via XDA's JCase's Sunshine.
That hole has seemingly been patched, but anther workaround might be discovered. The Moto G runs at near stock & as of Nov. 17, 2014, the Cricket Moto G LTE is running the second most recent version of Android, and is on par with the retail version. Within the next month, Android L will be made available for the retail models. Hopefully, Cricket approves the release shortly thereafter.
Only substantial improvement I could see would be allowing additional APNs to be added. My thinking is that once SIM unlock occurs, that this option becomes available???

Yes. I currently running stock retail version ROM from the repository here in this forum. They are supposed to receive OEM updates and they are
Flashable through TWRP. Of course, you need to have unlocked boot loader, root access and a custom recovery.
I had a stint of using carbon ROM, I'm only a temporary passenger to the stock retail version to get my GPS fixed. But yes it works just fine

FYI you will be able to unlock boot loader with sunshine because the cricket version runs on 4.4.2

At this point i am not aware of any other ways. The cricket version was unlockable until a month or two ago. They may have changed it. Its probably due to the cricket moto G being cheaper. Or they may just make it unlockable when the phone turns obsolete.
I know $25 is a bit much, but when you get around to it, for me, it was worth it.
You will not get charged if it doesn't work.
After much searching and learning on these forums, I finally decided to give this a go. After unlocking the bootloader with Sunshine, I used this guide and to my surprise it went very smoothly and worked wonderfully. I'm still amazed that I didn't somehow foolishly brick my girlfriends phone lol. Anyway, She'll be glad that she no longer has the very annoying speakerphone bug (extremely low volume on initial switch, remedied by pushing vol up or down) on her phone anymore. Thanks for all the replies!
All the guides on rooting need Sunshine, and I don't have $25. I'm wanting to root my Verizon M8 so I can use Xprivacy and perhaps give custom ROMs a go. They took Firewater down, so I can't attempt to use that. I'm up to date on my firmware, so I may have screwed myself there, but I didn't plan on rooting at the time. Please help.
From my understanding, this is considerably more complicated than rooting a RAZR. With that I just ran RAZR Blade and presto. With this it's saying I need to root, use S-Off to unlock boot loader for custom ROMs, and flash a ROM. Please help clear it up for me. I'm pretty confused.

The only way to install a custom rom would be to utilize sunshine. JCase and Beaups are the creators of sunshine. Their tool costs $25 if you want to use it. Fortunately, installing custom roms is not a necessity so you do not have to fork $25 unless you want custom roms.

I don't need custom ROMs at the moment. Maybe in the future I can afford it and I'll just hold off on upgrading to Lollipop until I just flash it already modded from here.
I mainly want things like Xprivacy and Reaver. What do I need to root it just to the point where I can do that without enabling the custom ROMs?

Sorry man....unless you are on really old firmware rumrunner is no go. You can't downgrade either without s-off. I dont believe it ever worked on the m8 TO BE honest either v
Htc dev is blocked for vzw.
If you are on vzw and on 4.4.2 or newer don't waste your time. There's nothing out there but a huge waste of time.

Crap. I guess I'll just get Sunshine when I can afford it. I'll hold off on upgrading to Lollipop when it comes out to ensure there are no issues with that as well.
Thanks for your help.

Got new VZW M8 with 4.4.4. Sunshine is no joy. After fooling around for a week with Weaksauce2 and SS, I do have TempRoot, Superuser (no updated binaries), and BusyBox. Titanium backup works so that's a plus but Xposed will not load. WiFi tether works so the phone is so-so other than the unwritable SD card issue with 4.4.4.
BIG QUESTION is what can I do to assure this does not update while I am not looking?
I'm on 4.4.2 paypal dosen't work in my country :crying:
too bad there's no way to unlockbootloader and s-off

Beats me. I ran it as soon as I got the phone before I put a SIM in and before it was activated. Tried with Weaksauce2 too. I understand that some VZW M8 with 4.4.4 won't take it so I'm waiting for 3.0.

It works for some 4.4.4, others it doesn't. It's the luck of the draw.
I lucked out being able to use sunshine without flaws. After thinking about it, $25 ain't bad, considering all that you get for it.
Las post on this thread was too long ago.
I want to root, not to be s-off, just root to fix the thetering wifi and install my titanium backup app. It woul be nice to be an s-off to flas a custom recovery and flash custom roms but for now I just need to root my phone but I dont know how. Sunshine ask me for a Root, and when I search to root all post says that I need Sunshine so, I dont know what to do, tried with weaksouce and it freezes and dont work. What can I do?
