[Q] Updates with xposed installed - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just a query really more than anything.
I've got my Nexus 5 rooted using cf-auto root, TWRP recovery and got xposed framework installed.
Now whenever the next update for android comes out what would I need to do?
Do I have to disable xposed modules and then just flash the update and supersu zip?
or do I need to do more now I have got xposed.
Cheers guys.

Xposed has nothing to do with Android updates. With root & TWRP you will have to flash the OTA update file then root again.
This guide should help you.

Ah fair enough, just wasn't sure due to xposed framework changing system files.

Q: I have Xposed Framework installed. Do I need to uninstall it before the OTA?
A: Yes. It needs to be uninstalled and in some cases system files need to be replaced.

I imagine removing the modules and uninstall xposed I would be able to update then resume installing xposed and the modules again?

Hi,
Yes, and in Xposed framework you need to restore the original files by using "Uninstall (Restore app_process before)" before uninstall the app itself. The system file "app_process" is modified (/system/bin/app_process).
It will not hurt...

You have to do it ONLY IF you want to go back to stock. However you can simply flash the OTA update from a custom recovery.
As mentioned by El Daddy "In order for the OTA to apply successfully without intervention; you must be completely stock".

no, just no. if you want to the take the OTA, you must not have any modified /system/ files, which xposed modifies /system/ files.
xposed modifies the system and if you want to install the OTA through the stock recovery or even a custom recovery, you must uninstall the modules and framework.

Ok well that's useful to know.
Cheers all

Well... that's not what some people told me and the section B explains that:
Section B: Flashing in a Custom Recovery (TWRP- CWM)
1) Download the OTA.zip and copy to your phone.
2) Boot into recovery.
3) Flash the OTA just like you would a ROM.
4) Reboot.

However I'm always on custom ROMs so I never tried OTA update.
Maybe removing Xposed stuff is mandatory. I trust you if you are 100% sure.

what you quoted has to do if you made no system mods but have a custom recovery. The OTA checks the system files to make sure they are as expected.
i am 100% sure you need to uninstall xposed framework/modules before you can even think of flashing the OTA.

Thanks for the clarification.

Framework yes! MUST be uninstalled as this is in /system. You can then flash the ota manually via recovery but not before.
Xposed modules however do not modify /system. They are basic /data/app apks that use "existing" (xposed framework) /system resources. They do not further modify /system so I would doubt they need to be uninstalled

This may be dumb questions. If they are, I accept your scorn. When people say uninstall, that just entails going into the Xposed Installer app and hitting "Uninstall" under the Framework menu, right? There's really no need to uninstall the installer from the phone altogether, or is there? And finally, since the modules don't really modify /system, I take it it doesn't really matter whether we uncheck them or leave them checked when we uninstall the xposed framework?

That should be the case. Xposed installer is just a /data/app to install and manage the actual framework in /system. It's the framework that runs the modifications the modules provide, which is the whole point. Run system mods without Modding system... except the small mod of adding the framework itselfn.
One mod to rule them all

I think what @viking37 said is true - you need to go into the Xposed installer and select the option to uninstall and restore the original app_process.
Uninstalling the modules is really not needed. Keeping the modules "should" actually make sure that you don't have to worry about re-setting up the module the way you want it after you reinstall the XPosed Framework. (settings should get carried forward)

Re,
Yep, just use uninstall inside Xposed Framework, it will restore the original app_process located in /system/bin/app_process. When you use install inside Xposed Framework it will modifie the "app_process" file and create a backup of this file named "app_process.orig" then this file will be restored when using the uninstall option in Xposed Framework. You need, obviously to reboot.
In my previous post I said use "Uninstall (Restore app_process before)" because I have an older version (it was this name), now it's just "Uninstall", all is fine.
It seems that just uninstall Xposed Framework via settings/apps doesn't restore the original app_process. Just tested it's the case, if you uninstall Xposed Framework only via settings/apps, the "app_process" file is not restored, so the system file is still modified...

as a user, i can validate this.....
trying to flash OTA using custom recovery will fail if exposed is left alone
as long as you "Uninstall (Restore app_process before)"...... then the OTA will flash fine

I dont think you can uninstall the "xposed framework" from settings > Apps. Only the "xposed framework installer", although really old versions didn't use the installer at all either.

Re,
Hum... I just tested with the last version available in the Xposed thread, xposed.installer_v25_36
What I mean is that you need to first use the "uninstall" option in Xposed to have your "app_process" file restored other than that just uninstall Xposed from settings/apps keeps the "app_process" modified (you can see with the date of the modification in /system/bin with a file explorer and file zize too, not the same) and "app_process.orig" so t's not restored.

[Q] Backup/Restore of the Xposed Framework with Tutanium Backup

I have a rooted Nexus 5 on KitKat 4.4.2 , also installed Xposed Framework with several Modules (set up on my liking)
My question is: Can I (/ is it safe to) to backup the Xposed Framework with it's all Modules (with their settings) by Titanium Backup and then let's say after freshly flashing the KitKat 4.4.3, to restore them back and have it fully functional, like it was before or is it not safe to do and I have to Install and set them up, over again on the new rom (stock)?
I am sure a lot of people would like to know what to do in this case, but I haven't yet found the answer on this question.
Thanks.

The framework, no. But the Xposed Installer app, all the modules and their respective settings - yes. You do your titanium restore, open teh xposed app and then install the framework, then everything was as it was before.
only Modules?

So it is safe to Backup / Restore only the Modules (with their data/settings), but the Framework has to be downloaded and installed manually?
So after restore all the Modules (Gravity Box and so on.....) are going to have their settings set in a root level just fine ??
Thanks

Xposed on 5.0.1

Has anyone had success installing xposed framework on the m8 running a stock rooted lollipop rom? I have tried multiple times following the guide in the xposed thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811 with no success.
It worked for me on adrenaline 2.1 but not on a couple of other roms I tried.

I downloaded the files from the link I posted above..
Install the xposed installer .apk
Reboot from within the installer and grant root privileges.
Flash the framework via TWRP
I have also tried to flash the framework first, install the .apk, and reboot from within the installer to grant root.
Neither way has worked for me.

I have it running on stock rooted, here are the steps I took.
Flashed the xposed arm zip file in TWRP
Installed the 3.0 alpha2 apk
Once installed I went into "framework" and hit soft reboot.
Once the phone was done I installed a module/made it active and soft reboot again.
I don't think you have to take these exact same steps but this is just what I did following a YT video. In "framework" it always says "Installation is only possible maunally via recovery for now." in red letters. That confused me into thinking it was not installed properly but all the modules I'm using are working fine.

I have tried to install this exact same way. After flashing the framework and installing the alpha .apk, I activated greenify and rebooted.
Upon launching greenify, I saw a yellow dialogue box that said auto hibernation service has stopped (auto hibernation worked fine before trying to use xposed) I attempted to enable the xposed features and a screen popped up telling me to install the xposed framework.
I have since restored my nand backup I made before flashing xposed, and greenify is back to auto hibernating, just cant use the xposed features.

Have you tried installing other modules? Looking around the greenify sections here on XDA seems it wasn't ready for 5.0, but there is a beta thread that you may want to take a look at.

Can't install Xposed on G2 Mini

I'm trying to install Xposed on my G2 Mini so that I can block the volume buttons on the back as they're driving me mad constantly taking photos in my pocket. I've installed G2 Xposed, downloaded an .apk Xposed Installer it prompted me to but when I go to it and try to install the framework, it says that Xposed is not yet compatible with SDK 21 or my CPU architecure (armeabi-v7a) and below, there is such info:
CANNOT LINK EXECUTALE: could not load library "libdcm.so" needed by "/data/data/de.robv.android.xposed.installer/cache/app_process"; caused by library "libdvm.so" not found

Why is that so? How can I install Xposed, then? I need to cause it seems it's the only way to use G2 TweaksBox to block the aforementioned buttons and from what I read, people have installed Xposed with no problem on G2 Mini.

Install BusyBox, then Xposed., then your modules. I don't think there's any need to uninstall, just do it in that order and reinstall if it asks, and reboot when it says.

BS_FREE_Lollipop_5.0_Rom_BPB1_Based

This is a modified version of @jrkruse stock BPB1 deodexed ROM with all(or most) of the stock BS removed.
INSTRUCTIONS:
I've included the links needed if you want to use xposed. If you chose not to use Xposed, then skip that step in the flashing process.
I have only used Safestrap to install this ROM, but FlashFire should work as well.
1) Flash NO_BS_BPB1_ROM_DEODEXED.zip
2) Flash Extra_toggles.zip
3) Flash xposed-v75-sdk21-arm-arter97-snapdragon.zip
4) Flash Lollipop_Safestrap_Reboot_Extended_PM_PB1.zip
5) Flash BPB1_Firmware_No_Bootloaders.zip
6) After first boot, open Lollipop Recovery Control and install the latest Safestrap.
7) Open up Viper4Android and install the driver. Then install Viper Fix 1.1.apk and run the Viper fix in the app.
There is no need to flash any Viper zips with this ROM. This ROM has all the same apps as BOK3 V5, but obviously updated to the BPB1 apps. The only app added is multiwindow. I don't use multiwindow, so I can be certain that all aspects of it work, but everything seemed to work normally when I played with it.
Note: Don't pay attention to the 1- prefix in front of some of the ROM versions. I prefix all my flashables in my ROM folder with a 1-, 2-, 3-, ect, so that I have them all in order when I flash them instead of having to remember the order every time lol. I forgot to remove those prefixes when I uploaded the ROMs.

I don't have any of these problems on mine. Does anybody else? It sounds like you guys might have some bad data from a previous ROM. The Play Store was updated in this ROM, so clear data for the Play Store, and that might fix the problem.

Few Questions
First, since I'm pretty new to flashing ROMs with SafeStrap...
At each step of your process when you say "Flash" does that mean Safestrap-> Boot to Recovery ->Install Zip ???
I'm looking at needing Xposed in order to bypass my company's Exchange security requirement of encrypting my device in order to allow email access.
I got a little confused with all the Xposed documentation out there.
Does this set of instructions get me to where I can load the Xposed module to bypass that security and then continue from there?
Big Thanks for your help.
I'm going to start a backup of current ROM so I'll be ready to install this soon.
Regards,
NerdyKowboy

Yes, flash means install in Safestrap.
If you flash the Xposed zip I linked in the original post, then you can use modules in the Xposed installer app included in the ROM.

I did that, and this is AWESOME. Love the ROM. Tough to decide between the two launchers. Haven't had this level of control in a while.
Only snag was that Android Pay doesn't recognize the device as Android authentic, so can't use Android Pay (which I almost never used anyway).

I believe Android Pay doesn't work sheerly because the device is rooted, not because of the ROM itself.
Can't get snapchat to login with Xposed. I've read the solution is to do an Xposed framework uninstall, login to Snap, then reinstall Xposed, but have found a lot of people get hung in a bootloop when uninstalling.
Is this from using the wrong uninstaller or something else?
Which uninstaller is correct?
Do you have another solution?
I have tried removing the modules and doing a reboot to see if that'd be adequate.
EDIT:
The issue was the xposed framework.
To anyone else doing this on Galaxy S5 with this ROM (or same version of Xposed)
1.) uninstall Snapchat
2.) Deactivate modules from Xposed
3.) Download and Flash "xposed-uninstaller-arter97.zip" from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/unofficial-xposed-samsung-lollipop-t3113463
4.) Reboot and wait for all the apps to Optimize

6.) Flash the same Xposed framework in original post of this thread (apps will re-optimize)

5.) Reinstall snapchat and login
6.) Flash the same Xposed framework in original post of this thread (apps will re-optimize)

So were you able to uninstall Xposed? I see your edit of "fixed issue" but in case you didn't or having issues I posted this in another thread.

Yes, that fixed the issue.
Successfully uninstalled Xposed, Reinstalled SnapChat and logged in without issue. Then, reflashed the Xposed framework.
So easy, but I was so nervous doing it after seeing many, many people talking about getting hung in a bootloop.

I did the same back today and i ended up with a boot loop. I got the same txt as in screenshot bt after reboot it went in boot loop
There are no problem with this files. you mention that "update Framework via app" thats the problem .. original xposed framework didnt work well with j700f. we need to use wanams custom build. u update the wanam's custom build . install framework via twrp. then install app. dont need to update framework (for me update option disabled )
