Questions regarding Receptions and Roms - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I just not a Nexus 5 and i'm loving it thus far. Just had a few questions.
1. Are there any scripts, Roms, mods, or scripts that will help improve receptions or would allow the phone to stay connected to low reception? I have enough reception at home to place a call and walk around the entire house. However, if I'm not on the phone, at some places in the house, the reception will get completely dropped to no service.
2. Secondly, i know that WiFi calling does not work on our phones, but has anyone found a work around for this problem?
Thanks guys.

Need Help with Connection to a Network

So I am with some of my friends in Door County, Wisconsin. Both have phones that fully work. One is on US Cellular, the other on T mobile. I am on ATT and have absolutely no service. I only have WiFi, but I look funny using the TextFree app since I need to dance around the cabin to get service. However, I believe I should at least be able to Roam off of the Tmobile network since my friend is using his phone quite well. I just want to be able to text my friends and family without using data. Im gonna try changing to a different modem and see if that does the trick. But I will need help if that fails. Please help. Thank you.
ALSO, my friend has an ATT iphone that connects to ATT, it dances around 1-2 bars, but still gets service. In the network settings, ATT is in the available networks, but I get an error saying its not available. Please help.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. Wi Fi doesn't use data. Anyway, sounds like you might want to try a different modem. Sounds like the radio is not strong enough. Or perhaps the internal antenna was damaged.

Sorry.. anyways what I did was switch to a different modem which did help a little bit. Plus I think it takes a couple of days to register with the network if you go to a different area

[Q] How do I choose the best modem?

My i535 is on a rooted, unlocked stock, 4.1.2, baseband I535VRBMB1, with TWRP 2.5.0.0. My primary concern with the phone is it's spotty reception. I have thought that newer basebands would be the better ones, but from reading here I gather that is not always true. Can someone point me to some information that would help me choose and install various modems to see if there is one that will do less signal searching. Right now I have disabled LTE on my phone and that seems to work better. Maybe that's as good as I can expect.
Here you go: http://invisiblek.org/sch-i535/modems/
FYI there isn't any modem that is better then the other as it all depends on your cell coverage where you live and how your phone responds to the modem.

Thanks, I guess that Verizon has to build modems that work for the "average" situation. If everyone lived in the same coverage area there would be a lot fewer complaints about dropped calls and poor connection. I know that it will take a few days for a modem to learn how to connect in an area. It's not fun to be stuck with a phone that people tell me is breaking up when I call them. I came from a Droid X and I'd say it had a lot less problems with calls. I have always used antenna signal amps in my vehicle and that does help. (Wilson Electronics).

The verizon gs3 has signal issues. Im in a very well covered LTE area and have issues with signal. Doesn't matter the modem. Its the phone itself.
See that proves my point that you get varying results depending on location and phone. While you got problems in a well covered area of Colorado, I get problems I certain bulidings in NYC that I had no issues with my previous phone.
I get fantastic coverage (but unfortunately not on AOSP) and I'm on a rather old modem. I figured not to mess with it because I know they're really touchy

[Q] Tasker and Secure Settings = WiFi on and LTE off ?

I cant figure out how to do the following. When I am connected to any WiFi, I'd like my mobile connection switch from LTE to 3G or 2G. And back to LTE when I disconnect from WiFi.
I have stock N5, rooted and Secure Settings Pro. It seems that 2G/3G Toggle is red and disabled in Tasker because of ROM? So I was thinking I should be able to make it happen through Secure Settings. May be I am wrong.
I have a feeling such Tasker/Secure Settings function can be useful to a bunch of people to save battery and get better voice reception when inside buildings. Could someone help?
Why would you need any mobile data connection when you are connected to wifi?

to get MMS ..............
This would serve no purpose. LTE is not "on" if you're connected to a wifi network. Voice over LTE doesn't take calls if the signal isn't good enough to sustain it, and even then only kicks in when you've actually received a call. The minimal amount of time you actually would use LTE (MMS, VoLTE calls) would have such a minimal impact that I doubt you could even measure it.

cool, if thats so. However, when I switch to 2G or 3G I get more bars. And better voice reception. How would you fit this in?
I am also interested in this. I have been searching high and low on the Google machine for something to do the same. At my house I get 1, maybe 2 bars of LTE, but when I switch to 3G mode, I get full service. Therefore, it would be very useful to toggle LTE to 3G when connected to WIFI.
When I leave my house and the WIFI disconnects it would also be great to switch back to LTE.
There is a noticeable battery impact when on LTE with low service.
Any additional insight would be great; thanks!!
Yeah, I also get a noticeable battery drain from low lte signals when on wi-fi. A working Tasker profile for turning off lte when on wi-fi would be awesome. I just thought of it myself, so I guess I'll try getting one setup myself.
has anyone figured howto do this??

When on WiFi LTE is already turned off. Its your poor cell signal that's killing you. Nothing you can really do about that. Except maybe witch to 3G or 2G, as that can give you a better signal if you are having to connect to a different tower that is farthe raway just for LTE.

OK Guys give me a couple of hours and I will have a tasker profile for you guys. One catch though. Tasker does not support auto switching to 2G/3G on newer versions of Android for some reason. Likely permission issues in the code So I will need to find a workaround. Shouldn't be hard. I already have a few ideas. Now my workaround would requie you to be on a CM/AOKP based ROM. IF you are on Stock let me know and I wil ltry to create a workaroud specifically for Stock (Likely a manually written script). I am in IT and I take helpdesk calls so I will try to work on this in between calls. Give me a coupel hours
OK guys. I set up and alternative to Tasker for you guys. Tasker seems to lack the feature which is sad.
Download Llama. Its a free alternative to tasked and the learning curve isn't as steep.
Download my created profiles and import them. YOU WILL NEED TO EDIT WITH YOUR OWN NETWORK SSID (must connect to it)
3G only When on WiFi: http://goo.gl/tW4ySB
Enable 4G when WiFi disconnects: http://goo.gl/eZ0uXt

Just installed it, I'm new to this app. But I imported both of them and changed it to any wifi network. Only thing is I may not be back on wifi till tommorow. But I will let you know for sure. Be nice to not have to turn lte on and off for battery savings. Thanks again man!
I tried it out, it worked like the first two times and know it ain't working anymore.

Did you train your Home and Work profiles?
#StayParanoid
It's training as we speak. My work is like five mins drive from my home. And I see its seeing one of the same towers on both. What is a fellas options?

Not sure. I'll try to troubleshoot this over the next day or so and see if I can replicate it.
#StayParanoid
Sounds good. I think some it because like when I'm home, it will say work, home as it picks up the same towers pretty much as it is only a five minute drive between work and home. So unless there is a different approach to this or if it still needs learning?

Since you use the same tower for both work and home I think maybe you would have to train it via GPS?
#StayParanoid
how would i train it via the gps? thanks!
also, when I test the actions to enable 4g and 3g that you made, it says, "Llama-ERROR: Failed to toggle WiMax"
mean time while i try to search for this, i have deleted one of the cells my work and home had in common, fingers crossed it made work now. any suggestions/ guidance if you get the time would be greatly appreciated too! thanks ever sooo much!

Do you have Spark in your market? Might take a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2715529

Wouldn't matter the market.
Tri-band Sprint phones can't have data & voice, unless you're on WiFi.
When VoIP gets around it won't be as big of a deal but I doubt that happens with VoLTE while this phone is around, probably in another year or 2 on those phones.

[H] Reception problems

Hello I have a Nexus D821 and have reception problems when I'm in the house
There is a way to replace a modem? If yes how?
Do I need to replace the antenna ?

There is no hardware replacement as the phone in each country uses the same one. There is a thread in general that suggests you can take a piece of wire and extend the "Aerial"...
If you have unlocked the bootlaoder, you could try just flashing different software baseband / modem / radio though

I gave you 2 possible fixes in my last post :/
I have a weak signal in my home.... Was worse on older devices, but still it's not great. It's just a part of life. Usually not much you can do about it.
My work around is trying to stay on my WiFi and use apps like voxer or bbm to message when I'm at home.... Since they use my WiFi, not my antenna or data. Of course the problem with this, is the people I want to communicate with need these apps installed too. And they will use some data when not on WiFi.
Also, battery life will take a beating if you're on data with poor reception. Again, being on WiFi eliminates that.
Luckily I can usually make calls inside now.... But with my older devices, I usually had to go outside to do so.
There's also cell phone signal boosters, but they are very expensive and reviews are mixed about whether they help.
