[Q] Tasker and Secure Settings = WiFi on and LTE off ? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I cant figure out how to do the following. When I am connected to any WiFi, I'd like my mobile connection switch from LTE to 3G or 2G. And back to LTE when I disconnect from WiFi.
I have stock N5, rooted and Secure Settings Pro. It seems that 2G/3G Toggle is red and disabled in Tasker because of ROM? So I was thinking I should be able to make it happen through Secure Settings. May be I am wrong.
I have a feeling such Tasker/Secure Settings function can be useful to a bunch of people to save battery and get better voice reception when inside buildings. Could someone help?

Why would you need any mobile data connection when you are connected to wifi?

to get MMS ..............

This would serve no purpose. LTE is not "on" if you're connected to a wifi network. Voice over LTE doesn't take calls if the signal isn't good enough to sustain it, and even then only kicks in when you've actually received a call. The minimal amount of time you actually would use LTE (MMS, VoLTE calls) would have such a minimal impact that I doubt you could even measure it.

cool, if thats so. However, when I switch to 2G or 3G I get more bars. And better voice reception. How would you fit this in?

I am also interested in this. I have been searching high and low on the Google machine for something to do the same. At my house I get 1, maybe 2 bars of LTE, but when I switch to 3G mode, I get full service. Therefore, it would be very useful to toggle LTE to 3G when connected to WIFI.
When I leave my house and the WIFI disconnects it would also be great to switch back to LTE.
There is a noticeable battery impact when on LTE with low service.
Any additional insight would be great; thanks!!

Yeah, I also get a noticeable battery drain from low lte signals when on wi-fi. A working Tasker profile for turning off lte when on wi-fi would be awesome. I just thought of it myself, so I guess I'll try getting one setup myself.

has anyone figured howto do this??

When on WiFi LTE is already turned off. Its your poor cell signal that's killing you. Nothing you can really do about that. Except maybe witch to 3G or 2G, as that can give you a better signal if you are having to connect to a different tower that is farthe raway just for LTE.

OK Guys give me a couple of hours and I will have a tasker profile for you guys. One catch though. Tasker does not support auto switching to 2G/3G on newer versions of Android for some reason. Likely permission issues in the code So I will need to find a workaround. Shouldn't be hard. I already have a few ideas. Now my workaround would requie you to be on a CM/AOKP based ROM. IF you are on Stock let me know and I wil ltry to create a workaroud specifically for Stock (Likely a manually written script). I am in IT and I take helpdesk calls so I will try to work on this in between calls. Give me a coupel hours

OK guys. I set up and alternative to Tasker for you guys. Tasker seems to lack the feature which is sad.
Download Llama. Its a free alternative to tasked and the learning curve isn't as steep.
Download my created profiles and import them. YOU WILL NEED TO EDIT WITH YOUR OWN NETWORK SSID (must connect to it)

Just installed it, I'm new to this app. But I imported both of them and changed it to any wifi network. Only thing is I may not be back on wifi till tommorow. But I will let you know for sure. Be nice to not have to turn lte on and off for battery savings. Thanks again man!

I tried it out, it worked like the first two times and know it ain't working anymore.

It's training as we speak. My work is like five mins drive from my home. And I see its seeing one of the same towers on both. What is a fellas options?

Not sure. I'll try to troubleshoot this over the next day or so and see if I can replicate it.
#StayParanoid

Sounds good. I think some it because like when I'm home, it will say work, home as it picks up the same towers pretty much as it is only a five minute drive between work and home. So unless there is a different approach to this or if it still needs learning?

Since you use the same tower for both work and home I think maybe you would have to train it via GPS?

how would i train it via the gps? thanks!
also, when I test the actions to enable 4g and 3g that you made, it says, "Llama-ERROR: Failed to toggle WiMax"
mean time while i try to search for this, i have deleted one of the cells my work and home had in common, fingers crossed it made work now. any suggestions/ guidance if you get the time would be greatly appreciated too! thanks ever sooo much!

Poor reception on S3 somewhat fixed

So let me start off by saying I have pretty bad reception at home with 4g.
I had an iphone 4 with a 3g range extender before I got the S3 and it worked great.
Found a free app called phone info
Went in under device information, selected cdma auto (PRL). I restarted my phone.
I now have 5 bars and perfect clarity.

I am usually about 2 bars where I am. Making this switch didn't change my number of bars or dbm. I'm glad it worked for you however.
I expect by making this change, you are basically downgrading to 3G until you set it back.
If you have a network extender for 3G then that's the fix. Not turning on thst option.

Not exactly. The phone will stay in 4g with one bar even if 5 bars of 3G is available. So forcing the phone to switch to 3G is the only way I got the call quality I needed to make calls in my house

Unstable 3G performance
So I've had my S3 for a little over a month and have noticed the poor call reception that people have mentioned, especially in my office building. My old droid 2 global never had a problem, but when I receive calls on the S3 i have to walk to A window down the hall to keep the call from dropping. In an attempt to stay on the more stable 3G coverage in the area I installed phone tools and forced 3G. The problem I have now is that when I'm out of the office or house and not on wifi, I pull the phone put of my pocket to check something and there is no data connection at all now. Even if I open my browser and try to force a connection I get nothing. If I set the radio back to include LTE I have a reliable data connection everywhere but my calls are still poor.
Am i missing something when setting the phone to be 3G only? Thanks.
Ok i tried that phone info program and set it tup cdma auto or whatever, and no improvement. How do i get back to stock? I tried setting to lte/cdma/evdo but it does not stick. I tried uninstalling the program and the phone would stick to 3g. Help!

I wish Verizon and Samsung would just get together and try and resolve why their phones don't work well on Verizon's network. I figured they'd learn what they did wrong with the Nexus - pretty upset they never resolved it with the S3. I'm hoping the DNA/DLX from HTC doesn't have this issue. I liked the Samsung S3 in just about every way but the reception is wretched compared to Motorola phones.
yea I agree...the reception is awful. Literally can't use the phone for business. Everything else about it is awesome though

It has to do more with your location I think..I work in the tri-county are of Detroit and my reception is excellent. Had a Cappy on ATT before my GS3 on Verizon and could not even get a signal in our office building..now on Verizon I'm at least 4 bars and full strength pretty much everywhere else..

It seems to have to do with the technology of the Verizon towers in your area. In LA with a motorola phone I lock on no problem and get great reception. With the S3 you'll switch from 4 bars - drop the call and switch back to 4 bars even when stationary. Motorolas don't have that issue with Verizon's network. I know several people with the S3 including people in CT and TX - all having the same issue on Verizon's network.

[Q] Signalstrength and mobile internet connection issues

I often have issues with my signal being at 1 or 2 bars where friends of mine (Galaxy S3 and iPhone 4, but same operator) have like 4 or 5 bars. Sometimes people cant even call me even though my phone shows 1 bar of signal.
Buts thats not the worst thing. My mobile internet connection seems to not work EVERYTIME I'm in some kind of tunnel, sometimes even in normal houses. It shows that it tries to get information (arrow up and down) but it doesn't (it even switches from H to 3G, which doesnt even make sense). In the end it tells me the networks not working.
Does anybody have similar issues?
Some boost mobile user reported similar behaviour.
I've flashed the ICS radio and signal is much stronger. While running the jb update I would have full bars and still get 'bad connection please turn on WiFi to connect to the internet' 4g full signal would do the same thing. Until I flashed ICS radio of course.
---------- Post added at 10:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:58 AM ----------
Edit. Probably the network, looks like jb radio is the same one, weird though my signal is much stronger now. Must have been a placebo, + the network being 'optimized'
Edit. Can any one verify the boost mobile jb radio? 'its the number under settings next to baseband'
Mine is 1.12.50.0516

I just got my replacement phone. Let's see if this One SV has the same problems. If so, I'll tell them to give me a different phone, I can't use it like that. I'll tell you guys.
I got a new one. It's a non LTE though. But it works way better now. Driving through tunnels makes my mobile Internet disconnect for a second now, but I guess that's pretty normal. Before it didn't work at all in tunnels. Maybe it had to do something with the LTE variant.
Gotta check if the phone signal got stronger too.
By the way I'm writing this while being in the subway station.
Sent from my HTC One SV using xda app-developers app
My LTE SV has roughly the same reception as my old phone, the Desire, which has always had great reception for me. So in your case it must have been either a defective terminal or maybe some weird software issue.
It's a shame, though, that they've replaced your SV with a non-LTE one. You did pay for the LTE version, that's what they should've replaced it with.
Well, something is still not right with this phone. Even though my mobile internet is working as intended now, I still have big connection issues. Sometimes (at least 5-10 per week) I lose my signal completely, which shouldn't be too much of a problem if it lasted for like 10 seconds or so, but it doesn't reconnect on its own. I have to restart my phone every time. People often can't call me for hours because I don't notice that it lost its signal once again.
I will call them and tell them I want a different phone as I'm still paying for it. I can't use this one anymore or at least not for my job.

Well, now that's weird. I mean OK, you might get one bad terminal, but to have it replaced and still have the same issues...?
It might be that your radio/ROM isn't compatible with the network, or maybe you have a bad SIM card. Try and replace the SIM, see what happens.
I live in a bad signal area. I usually get 1-2/5 bars on WCDMA and 3-4/5 GSM bars. Sometimes when the phone switches connections it'll take 2-5 seconds to do so, but i've never had it remain offline etc.
Could you please tell us where you're from/what operator you're subscribed to?

I'm from germany and my operator is o2. I contacted them again. They told me they can only send me another replacement phone, which wont change anything for sure.
My problem really isnt that it doesnt have signal for a short time period. My problem is that it stays like that for hours!
Please stop quoting the post you're answering to if said post is right above yours. It clutters up the forum.
Right then. So ask for a LTE replacement - that's what you've paid for, that's what they should give you, and see if the problem persists. If it does, use the phone without an SD card for a few days, try not to install any „toggle” software (like 2g/3g toggle widgets etc.) and replace your SIM card (it should either be free or cost you some 2 EUR - that's what Vodafone charges here in RO). If the problem still persists, it must be a network issue.
If you have a few minutes, try this: Settings -> Mobile Data -> Network Operators -> Search Networks, give the phone a few minutes to look for networks, then when it displays the network list, tap on yours and allow it to register. See if this changes anything.
Sorry sir. I'm just pressing that reply button. Didn't know about the one under it.
I just found out something pretty retarded. I went for the network settings and chose the network mode "GSM/WCDMA" instead of "GSM/WCDMA/LTE" and it instantly jumped to 5 bars from 1. It's the fricking LTE network.
By the way i made a mistake. it was a LTE version replacement from the beginning.
Yupp, thats what i always do: let the phone always work in the best available network (set by me to GSM Only).
This Network is pretty stable at my place and its also battery saving because it don't search/switch for another net.
Well that's quite crappy though. I didn't buy a LTE phone and a contract that allows me to use it, just to find out that it doesnt work as intended.
God I hate it.
I told them that this is the problem and they're just sending me a new sim card. Don't really expect this to help, but let' try out and afterwards I'll just contact them again.
At least the phones stable now...
Well, it's not the phone's fault. It's the operator's fault. Their LTE network is not developed enough. You should be happy, though. Vodafone Romania does advertise LTE, but the coverage is somewhere near 0.01% of the country (mostly near Vodafone shops or by the seaside). So where i live i don't even get LTE. And i live in the capitol.
Thats what i think. LTE is far away from stable and everywhere available.
Near to me is a village, where you can't use a mobile phone, because there is NO network at all, lol.
What?! In DE? I thought that only happened in the East!
Yupp, in the middle of "DE"...
Lol, don't wanna live in this village. Many jokes and so, you can imagine

russellvone, you're lucky.
In the area I'm in a bunch of Boost customers had serious signal strength issues starting last week, and data feels like it's been throttled to 2g/EDGE while we all get "4G" on our status bars.
Service feels like it's been declining, and I've only been with them since June of this year.
PRL updates did nothing.
I used Tmobile prepaid for my personal phone since the Nexus S launched, then a Galaxy Nexus.
The only reason why I didn't get a Nexus 4 was that I thought I was missing out on something without LTE.
I got the SV for free, so I didn't exactly choose Boost.
I just needed something to hold me over a few months.
Now, I won't care if the Nexus 5 has LTE or not, I'm buying one and going back to Tmo.
The SV is fine, the service.....that makes it or breaks it for me.

I'm on AT&T and have the correct APN settings and have called AT&T with my IMEI. I have significantly worse signal than with my HTC One X. I am not comparing bars to bars, but rather where the signal drops completely. In places where I had low signal but still connected I now have nothing.

T-Mobile on stock ROM i had my first signal drops.
I was fine (or at least never noticed them) from the time i got my phone (day one) without any drops here in orlando.
Drove over to Tampa/Venice Beach area this past weekend and noticed some drops. Had about 6 drops according to my battery stats in 2 days. i had good to excellent coverage the entire time except when it would drop comlpetely (outline of signal bars)
would connect in a couple seconds, but i noticed over night, it would drop for a pretty large amount of time (like 10-15 minutes at a time.)
Mmm defo seems like were all having the same issues, wonder what it could be
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I had this issue too, and here's how I fixed it:
By default LTE is enabled, meaning the phone will periodically scan for a LTE network. If you're in a big city, you're likely to find one. Your phone will attempt to connect. However, it fails, meaning it will have to rescan the HSPA bands to connect back. That results in a few seconds of no service. Why can't it connect to LTE? Because by default, the APN is not the LTE APN, for Rogers at least. I'd assume AT&T would be the same. You can test this by dialing *#*#4636#*#*, selecting phone info, and selecting LTE only. You'll see that there is no service. I tested this in an area I knew had great LTE coverage, and that led me to the conclusion that it's LTE causing the signal drops.
So how to fix? Simple, just change your APN to the LTE APN for your carried. To do that go to Settings -> More -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names. If you're experiencing this issue on Rogers, change the APN field to ltemobile.apn. If you're on another carrier, you'll have to search for their LTE APN configuration.
After doing this your phone should start connecting to LTE again, and you won't get those annoying signal drops.

So yeah the next update will probably fix the issue. It's not so bad in the meantime, Lightflow sill notify you that your nexus has lost signal, and you still get the internet and incoming calls.
We're not alone. Supposedly Google is "aware" of the issue.
i've hcanged my setting from '4g' to '3g' to see if i notice a difference (hopefully will) then when 4g is released or i get a 4g sim, can move it back up
Yes, I'm having issues too. The real problem is the fact that I have a Wilson cell booster in my home (supposed to have up to 5000 square foot range) and my n4 had full bars most everywhere inside. With my n5 It shows 1 to 2 bars if I'm lucky and quite often drops to none! The only way to get full bars Is to stand right under the indoor antenna. Not impressed, and I sure hope this is fixable!

I hate to revive a dead thread, but I was wondering if people were still having problems. Once or twice during the day that I can see I will lose signal for a few seconds only to have it reconnect. Running 4.4.2 so the latest update did nothing to help the problem as far as I can see and I have messed with my APN settings. On AT&T. The Google thread seems to have a lot of different problems on the same thread, and it is a bit unclear if people are still having this problem. This is very annoying for such an otherwise spectacular phone. Thanks and sorry again for reviving the thread... :fingers-crossed:

Appreciate the speedy reply. Hope Google gets on this fast. I also have LTE connection issues which has plagued both this and my original device so I am pretty sure its a radio issue. The phone loves to stay on HSPA+ even when there is a decent LTE connection: it's last in the pack to connect to LTE and first to disconnect when compared to others on AT&T.

My N4 with a combo radio sticks to LTE a tad better than my N5 with stock radio. Sadly, morrislee hasn't fiddled and combo'd N5 radios, and I'm not sure they've been tested and sussed out like the N4 radios. Citing the fact some with issues have flashed all the radios so far with minimal success means we wait for Qualcomm, after Google kicks them in the you know where.

Phone doesn't reconnect to LTE after dropping to 3G?

Anybody else having this issue? LTE works fine until..it doesn't, and then even if I was getting LTE in the exact same spot, it never jumps back on it. Once it's in 3G, it stays 3G until I restart. Any way to fix this?

You are in a area where they have not fixed circuit fallback. ... they made the phone do this so you would get calls and text ... triband phones use cfbs to push through calls so if your connected to lte you will not get calls and text.
Read this it will explain much betterhttp://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog/1/...-due-to-circuit-switched-fallback-technology/

I get what you're saying, but I don't believe that's it-- I stay on 4G most of the time, but once I get a call and it shifts me back to 3G, it never moves me back to 4G after the call. It just sits on 3G until I cycle airplane mode or restart the phone.

The article listed is the problem your having. You are not the only one and calling Sprint is a waste of time as most dont know what your talking about.

Actually, if you read, it's not. If I wasn't in a CSFB market, then I wouldn't connect to LTE at all except for a moment, and then drop off. I do connect to LTE, and receive calls without a problem. But let's say I pick up my phone and walk into another room where the LTE signal isn't as good, and my phone drops to 3G-- when I come back to the good LTE reception room, it should reconnect, like my previous phone would. Instead, it doesn't. It has nothing to do with CSFB.

Ok well good luck getting help fixing this problem with an atittude like that. Since I've had this phone, I mostly see 3G but with my S4, I never saw 3G. I can get it to be on LTE all day long when det to LTE only. Its something to do with 3G/LTE hand off and the single band data/voice radio.

My "attitude" was simply to correct you, since you either didn't read the article or didn't understand what I'm talking about.
I can agree it's probably something to do with the hand-off and/or the radio/how aggressively it decides to change connections, but that's not CSFB.

try clicking airplane mode, and then back off...that should reset it
i randomly run into this...but most of the time it gains LTE

Keep having data issues on my N5

So I had this issue with 4.4.2,.3, and now .4 radios. Sometimes when I switch from WIFI to LTE or from No Signal to 5 bars of LTE, data does not reconnect and I either have to wait or reboot the phone. Its extremely annoying. I am on Stock ROM rooted with Franco Kernel and currently on 4.4.3 with 4.4.4 radio. Anyone know whats going on?
are you undervolting?

Nope, I was and went back to stock voltage but it didn't fix anything
Also, I do get 3-5 bars of LTE in status bar but when I try to accessing internet I get nothing, be it in Chrome or any another app
well, its a known issue on the n5. it doesnt affect me much, as i reconnect to lte very fast and immediately have data. but, every once in a while, itll show me that im connected, but data stops flowing. at that point i turn on airplane mode, let it disconnect, then reenable it. data always starts flowing immediately after that.

I see. Why wouldn't they fix it? We had 2 updates already and I actually got it even worse now

i dont know. maybe they are aware and are working on it. but really, for me personally, it really doesnt create an issue. i turn on and off my airplane mode once/twice every week or two.

in feb or march, there was a few week period that it happened 3-4 times a day. thankfully it didnt go on. because of that, i assumed it was a tmobile issue, with them constantly upgrading their network in my area. but now i just dont know(lol).
It could be a tower issue. I have also seen weird things where it tries to connect and when I look at the actual field test app it shows it is on say LTE but reports in Android as searching for signal. A quick test shows the APN may be at fault. I know it sounds weird but for me on Cricket if I delete the APN LTE goes away. I put it back and LTE magically appears.
Also when I had Sprint I noticed there was a weirdness in that you could have an APN for EHRPD EVDO as a bearer or LTE as a bearer but not both it seemed so it would flawlessly connect to LTE but not EHRPD or vice versa.
If you know the APN is right then it may be a tower issue. Some towers may not broadcast LTE near you but ones slightly further away do so the phone may not connect right away.
