Hi, I have had my Moto G since Christmas, I am having some problems with the sound on calls.
When I make or receive a call the sound is very quiet and even on loud speaker I can only just hear the person talking. I have turned up the sound all the way during calls but nothing. I have looked at a few settings but nothing seems to help.
My volume control is set to max for everything and the only way I have found for the volume to come back is to turn my phone on and off but after one call its gone back really quiet again. My speakers work fine for music and games it just seems to be during calls.
Any ideas that could help me would be very appreciated,
Thanks, Kim.
In my phone the problem showed up after the KitKat update. While we wait for Motorola to fix this (hopefully), there is a workaround: just lower and raise volume during the call. Works like a charm.

I have this problem from the day I bought Nexus 5.
When I talking with someone (call), I can hear him - not excellent, but acceptable. Then suddenly the voice volume goes down for second or two and I can hear just a little. And again ...
At first I think this is HW problem, because I wasn't sure if this issue comes when I move a phone.
But then I tried to play some music - it is louder then call voice and there isn't any changing volumes when I listen music (I tried also to hold a phone like when making a phone call).
So now I'm sure, this is SW problem. Speakers works good - but not clear and loud enough when I make a call.
Any idea?
Change (stock) kernel to Franco? Wait for Google update?
Yesterday night after returning home from a busy day at office, I inserted earphones to my moto G to listen to some songs and i instantly found out that there was a very low audible music playing. My finger instantly went at the volume switch and to my horror i found that the volume is already at max!. I tried to lower volume, with no change in earphone volume intensity and again increased it, still no change.
Then i removed my earphones assuming they are faulty and the loudspeaker had same issue!
I tried changing ringtones to check if those sound play well, but still problem persisted and I instantly realized that my moto g haven't been playing ringtones even at office while receiving messages (Which obviously i had ignored since i was busy with work).
Now a fear gripped me, and thought of my moto G having hardware fault ran through my brain
The only old school option that came to my mind is reboot.
I rebooted keeping my fingers crossed, and to my joy, volume worked fine on speakers and earphone as well.
The concern now is why that happened suddenly ? I run my moto g on stock with no apps that may tinker with my sound / volume.
Has anyone else ever had similar issue ?
Hello all,
First of all, I am no native english speaker so excuse my english, I'll do my best so you can undertand.
Second, I've tried to find a post or any help before posting, but I did not reset my phone.
Well, I will try to explain whats going on with my moto g:
A couple weeks ago, suddenly, I was making a call and the sound was going on and off, with no apparent reason. I thought it was my or the other person network.
After that, I guess that same afternoon, I noticed the speaker wasn't working when playin a video or any sound.
Since then it's always the same, the speaker sometimes works, sometimes not. When playing a video or sound, if the speaker is not working I shake or hit (with care hehe) the phone and it gets to work, but usually stops again soon. Usually there is no sound when receivin a notification, when receiving a call it works at first at least. When the alarm sounds, its pretty strange: looks like it would be trying to sound, and quickly decrease the volume, I dont know how to explain it, but I can not rely on the phone alarm.
Another strange thing, is that when I volume up or down, sometimes it changes the volume of the ring (volume when receiving a call or notfication, dont know how to explain it in english), and sometimes what seems to be the media volume (multimedia), but that is actually not the media volume because its in a different level than the one when I change the volume level when playing a video or media. I dont know how to explain it better...
I haven't tried with headphones. I did wipe cache and dalvik cache. I'm on android 4.4.4, using Dalvik. rooted and bootloader unlocked. Xposed, gravitybox, minminguard and motoguide installed.
I don't know what else can I tell you...if there is anything I can do let me know.
Thank you
If just poking or shaking the phone makes the speaker works means that some contact it's not sodered correctly so just take it to the service center and it will be repaired
Hello, first of all my english isn't good enough to describe all i want to say, i hope it's enough understandable.
My device xperia z3 (D6653) has a problem on speaker with incoming calls and activate loudspeaker phone during phone calls, the ringtone is too low.. as well as my speaker in phone calls.. the music is working fine and loud as it should be (both speaker work, top and bottom) but when somebody call me the phone rings too low even though every volume level is set to max! it's even more weird because when i go to "phone ringtone" like i would to set a new one, when i play the ringtone i already put or any another one the volume is normal as it should be and both speakers work.. but the problem still goes on when somebody calls me the bottom speaker only working and the phone sound is too low to hear of course as i mentioned when i active phone speaker during a call the bottom speaker still only working and i can't hear the caller while no sound or noise near me (quite place)!!
please help me, i am really very very disappointed.. i am missing most of my incoming calls because of this, and i can't hear the when loudspeaker is activated in calls..
P.S: the phone sound overall become a bit low but pretty noticeable after lollipop update or whatever i don't know, it was more louder when i bought it new, btw the speaker issue is remained the same when it was new though..
Build number; 23.4.A.0.546
Thanks.
please anybody help me!! i need a new software to solve this problem.. i can barely hear my phone ringing or even loudspeaker during calls...
Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum.
I have a stock Moto G 2015 2/16 GB version.
I've always had a problem with it: when I try to play an audio clip in Telegram or Whatsapp through the earpiece speaker, by pulling the phone up to my ear, the volume is just too low. It's all right if I'm in a quiet room, but as soon as there's even modest noise around, I can't hear anything. I can use the volume keys to adjust it, but it turns out I'm already at the highest setting and it's definitely not enough.
Conversely, when I use that same speaker during a phone call I can hear fine, even in a noisier room.
I'm running Android 6 at the moment but, as I said, I've had this problem since the beginning, when my phone still ran 5.x.
Thanks for any suggestions.
I actually have the opposite issue.
xt1540 2/16 6.0 stock not-rooted, bootloader unlocked
Music audio, notification tones (bells, beeps, whistles) are fine and loud
Phone calls volume is very low.
I've tried...when call starts down the volume then back up...no go
Move back to 5.1.1, still same issue.
Tried removing LCD to get ear screen out of the way...still issue persists.

I replaced the ear speaker, still low audio during calls. I forgot to describe when call is placed in speakerphone mode, the audio is fine albeit slightly distorted on high volume.
** comment ** I have a Lumia 640 LTE, (SD410) call volume in earspeaker is loud where I have to turn it down a couple clicks. And I've had people tell me that on their end my voice comes through same if not better than a corded landline. (using the same SIM that was used in the G3).
squid kernel screws the speaker while calling, make calls louder
Looks like it's an issue with a lot brand/model phones.
Something about mixer_paths.xml and "RX1 Digital Volume" needs to be changed.
So I'm guessing all the manufacturers are really lazy in tuning their Android smartphones to perform best for it's primary function, being a phone. Well, for that matter, overall sound quality with all the mic's and speakers.

Thank You hp420
I haven't tried it yet, but when I do I'm sure my G3 will be usable. And thanks again for taking the time and testing/providing different volume level versions of mix_paths.xml.

Update: I've tried the modified mixer_paths.xml, only marginal success. Possibly have a damaged speaker.
