Anyone get an update from Verizon on their S3 last night or sometime around then? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I got an update from them and I'm on Clean ROM with an unlocked bootloader. It downloaded automatically and when it shut my phone off to install, my ClockWork MOD said it was unsigned so I didn't install it.
If I install that will it re-lock my bootloader, and bring me back to stock and override my kernal and Clean ROM? I would like to know this before installing this if it's needed. Thanks.

Short answer: yes. Long answer: read the OP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575661

So wait.. can I avoid this update? I dont want it to overwrite my CLEAN ROM, custom kernal or any apps...?

Try deleting file download in etc/fota and rename or freeze otacerts.apk and fwupdate.apk.

I'm stock, because. I don't know how to root, and the 4.3 is a massive disappoint to me - the battery drain is extraordinarily high. 3 hours of light use drained 50% juice.
On the VZ forums, people are livid.

I really dont think the OS has anything much to do with battery life. Maybe it changed some location settings which would drain battery.

odd. On my Titanium Backup, I don't have any apps by that name. I looked multiple times in the app. Am I looking in the wrong area?

Use root explorer or ES file explorer navigate to this directory etc/fota and delete any file in this directory if any. Then navigate to /system/app and look for these otacerts.apk and fwupdate.apk. Rename them to otacerts.apk.bak and fwupdate.apk.bak.

Ok I'm officially at a loss. I have download ES File Explorer and I don't see ANY folder in etc called fota, and I do not have ANY app in the System app section called otacerts.apk or fwupdate.apk.
I dunno if they're gone or what.. but I don't see them anywhere.

You just disable the software download service so OTA can't download anymore. If the file already downloaded, it should be in the etc/fota location and you don't see any in there right? if you don't see any then you should be fine now.

Don't you mean "/Cache/FOTA"? I haven't heard of update.zip files downloading to /etc before.

[Q] Is there a way to "install" system apk's?

Let's say, for example, I uninstalled some apps in Titanium Backup. System apps such as MMS.apk or Contacts.apk, etc. How would I go about installing these apps back to my phone? I know that Titanium Backup does not restore them if you uninstall them. So is there another way? Because trying to install the normal way does not work.
Yes, use Root Explorer (or similar file manager app) to put them back in /system/app.
Alternatively, you can always use ADB to push the files back.

I tried this method and neither worked. I've literally tried everything. It's not that I can't flash any ROM I want to get it back its just that I'm trying to change up some of the theming of the stock apk's.

That's how you install them. Is /system mounted as RW when you're trying?
So is it safe to assume you deleted the backups in TiBu, then?

Right before I uninstalled MMS.apk, I backed it up with TiBu. When I tried restoring, it would just sit there "restoring" for several minutes and would never do anything. It never restored.
As funny as this thread is. Dude. go to your rom .zip and extract the files from the /system/app directory and reinstall them.

no. i'm saying take the /system from the .zip of whatever rom you have downloaded and push it to your phone.
It will overwrite whatever you screwed up. From what you are saying, you have done more then just delete some apk's. If all you did was delete them, then you should be able to put them back. The fact that you cannot tells me you have been doin more then what you are letting be known.
Alternate suggestion.
REFLASH YOUR PHONE.

If you do the root explorer and it didnt work, you might have to go into the app's settings and give yourself permission to edit these directories......

Yes I know of these ways, I was trying to figure out a way to do it for a single app as opposed to flashing the whole system back on. It's not that I have a problem and can't get these back. Thanks for your input.
Did you reboot after you put the apk(s) in /system/app so that they'd be re-populated in the list?

Yeah. I've literally tried everything. Maybe my flash of the new leak, 2.3.4, was no good. Thanks for the help though. I'll reflash the full package and start fresh with someone elses EP1F, maybe the one I downloaded was a fail.
Just making sure... but you have removed the apps completely and are just trying to add the old backups back in, right?
Do you have the apps somewhere other than Titanium Backup?

I just tried doing this AGAIN with a legit stock Browser.apk. It did the same exact thing. Won't install after reboot. This seems to be a problem with the EP1F leak.

Use a file explorer (e.g. Root Explorer or ES). For some incomprehensible reason danalo considers Google Talk bloatware and doesn't keep it installed in his rom. It should be somewhere in the system/apps folder as a .bak file. Just rename it back to the .apk and you should be good to go.
Yep just goto /system/app with Root Explorer (or similar) and rename 'Talk.apk.bak' to 'Talk.apk'. Reboot and it should appear.
I've pulled it out of system and installed it as a user app so I don't have to reinstall every release.

Copy both files to system/app and give them the same permissions as the other files in that folder.
Do the same with the attached files (LG Home selector).
Reboot the phone and it will ask you what home app to use.
Afterwards, you can delete the apk of your current Home app.

I've actually pushed the files over via ADB, but it doesn't install for some reason.... and I can't just copy it into System/app normally because it fails...which is why I wanted to see if any one can create a flashable zip. :/

i found a md5 file and a compressed file of my efs. how can i use it?
You could use a file explorer. Overwrite current .efs with the good one. Fix permissions & reboot. I don't know which file explorer you use. There are plenty of good ones in the play store. I use root explorer, but, it's a paid app.

just copy and paste it as it is? it is in .tar.md5
Did you use a program to back it up? Then use that program to restore.
If it's in a cwm backup, just extract with a zip program (winzip, 7zip). And yes, just copy/paste.
Check your file explorer, most have the ability to extract.

You also need to freeze updater in /system/priv-app
and yes.. i would wipe cache.
Delete it unless you want to save it for some reason. If that's the case move it to your sdcard or copy it to a pc and then delete it. If it were me I'd just delete it. You can always download it again if need be.

Um. Always did that in TWRP which I can't have since I have no Sunshine. Maybe I can do that from another app.
