**URGENT** Semi-Bricked HTC One S - HTC One S

Hello XDA, this is my first post so please bare with me.
I own an HTC One S and I've had it for about a year now. I recently rooted it about 3 or 4 days ago and everything was going smoothly, I pushed Superuser.zip onto the SD card and it worked fine, then I figured I might as well install a ROM manager so I got one off the Play Store, then I downloaded Clockworkmod Recovery and when I booted into recovery to flash it, the phone screen went dark, and wouldn't turn on. When I plugged the phone into the charger, the LED came on and stayed on even if I disconnected the phone. If I hold the power button, the screen flashes very quickly, the LED goes off and about 10 seconds later, the LED comes back on and it's back to the black screen. I had the same problem earlier but I pressed a combination of buttons (I don't remember which ones) and the screen came on so it's not bricked badly, I need help urgently.
Thank you in advance.

1. Go to bootloader (holding power button and volume down button)
2. Find out if it's locked or not.
3. Find out if your phone is S4 version (VLE PVT SHIP) or S3 version (VILLEC2)
4. Relock bootloader if unlocked:
1) Connect your phone to your PC
2) Make sure you have installed HTC Sync (drivers)
3) In bootloader with volume up/down button select "fastboot" then click the power button
4) Make sure it says "fastboot USB"
5) Download the file from the attachment (fastboot.rar)
6) Make a new folder on your C drive called fastboot
7) Extract the contents of fastboot.rar to your fastboot folder (the 4 files from fastboot folder)
8) Make sure your phone is connected to your PC, and you are in fastboot mode
9) open cmd and write:
Code:
cd/
cd fastboot
fastboot oem lock
10) Your phone is now Relocked!
5. If your phone is VLE PVT SHIP (S4) download this RUU ww w.androidruu. com/getdownload.php?file=Ville/RUU_Ville_U_JB_45_S_HTC_Europe_3.16.401.8_Radio_1.11.50.05.28_10.27.50.08L_release_301814_signed_2_4.exe
I recommend you this one but you can choose any other from ww w.androidruu. com/?developer=Ville
OR
If your phone is VILLEC2 (S3) download this RUU ww w.androidruu. com/getdownload.php?file=VilleC2/RUU_VILLEC2_U_ICS_40_HTC_Europe_1.11.401.110_Radio_16.12.20.02U_16.05.20.16_M2_release_263510_signed.exe
I recommend you this but again you can choose any other from ww w.androidruu. com/?developer=VilleC2
(remove the spaces from the links!)
6. Run the RUU
7. It will automatically detect your phone (if in Fastboot USB mode)
8. It will reinstall the stock ROM to your HTC One S, while it will be installing do not touch your phone, and don't even try to disconnect it! You could hardbrick it! You have been warned

Hi, i have the same exact problem. The phone like what OP mentioned, can't be turn on, just a quick flash of white light and nth. Power Button + Vol Down doesn't help either. I'm guessing my phone has the Hard Brick thing. So far, Riff Box JTAG is the ONLY way for this. Hope my country has one and KNOW of one.

Can't start after RUU S-OFF and rooted

Hi XDA,
I have S-OFF' and rooted my Desire S a couple of weeks ago, played around with CM7 and now tried to run the RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.8_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M_release_225161_signed.exe
The update went well but then the phone restarted, it was stuck on the white screen with green HTC on. I can pull the battery, hold VOL DOWN + POWER to start into hboot(Is it the right name for the menu??) but i don't know have to flash and get back to a working phone.
I have tried to search alot, but keeps finding alot of information but don't know which one I should try first.
Can someone help?
// Daniel
go to recovery and try to wipe cache
It's still stuck on the white screen with green HTC-logo.
I have taken backup's with ROM Manager before i changed ROM, i assume these are placed on the SD-card. Can i get clockwork-recovery back some way? I assaume HTC have overwriten the recovery with there stock-recovery, am I right?
WUHU !! Working again!
What I did was following:
1) shutdown phone
2) VOL DOWN + POWER (HBoot will now start)
3) Plugged in the USB cable
4) Entered fastboot (In USB Mode because of the previous step)
5) Opened a command-promt (run -> cmd) browsed to the folder with ADB and recovery-image
6) "Entered fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-saga.img" without "
7) Rebooted to clockwork recovery
8) restored a backup
9) Again a very happy owner of a Desire S
This was very helpfull: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122694

Congrats! Good work for a noob. It pays to search and do the research yourself, doesn't it? Now you need to modify the title of your post and put [SOLVED] on the front of it let others know the problem has been solved.

[Q] What next?

From the moment I turned on my phone I knew in my soul that I want to get rid of Sense 3.0
I used HTC's official method for unlocking my bootloader. Because this method is non-orthodox on this website I am wondering what I should do next in order to remove Sense 3.0 and install a fast up to date android OS
Thank you in advance
the first step you already have. s off
please see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
STEP 2. To INSTALL Recovery - v5.0.0.8
1. Download recovery v5.0.0.8 for the Sensation HERE: or Multiupload
2. Copy the PG58IMG file into the Root folder of your SD card (The main Folder of your Memory Card)
3. Turn off your phone FUlly and reboot into the Bootloader/HBOOT screen (see post above on how to get to hboot screen)
4. Press Volume up to Accept when it asks" Do you want to start the update"
5. Press Power Off to Reboot back to android after installation is successful (normal screen with homescreen)
6. Delete PG58IMG from your memory card and you can now root using step 3 below or install a custom ROM using CWM (Customs Roms are already rooted)
7. OPTIONAL: Boot into recovery or Completely switch off (Fastboot disabled or remove and reinsert battery)
Follow STEP 4 SUPER CID sub steps 1-6 to get adb running
8. Enter the command "adb shell cat /sys/devices/platform/htc_battery/power_supply/battery/status" Phone will confirm it is "CHARGING"
Charging issues fixed with new clockwork recovery. writing is now BLUE not purple or orange
Step 3. To permanently root your Sensation - (This means you will NOT LOSE ROOT on rebooting)
1. Download the file su-2.3.6.3-ef-signed.zip from here: DOWNLOAD
2. Copy su-2.3.6.3-ef-signed.zip to your SD card root folder (main folder of your memory card)
3. Start clockworkmod recovery (instructions below. See To Start Clockwork recovery)
4. BACKUP YOUR ROM USING CWM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ROOT!
5. Navigate to "Backup & Restore" using the Volume Down button and press select (power button to select) then select "Backup"
6. Select "install zip from sdcard" after backing up
7. Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"
8. Then select "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip"
9. Then select "Yes - install su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip" to confirm
10. Then go back
11. Then reboot.
12. You're rooted!
If you are getting error messages regarding S-OFF, Rooting or installation - Troubleshoot below in post 2
See POST 2(HERE):
STEP 4. WRITE SUPER CID [YOU ONLY NEED TO DO THIS ONCE]- (continue from step 11 below if you have already done this)
(allows you to flash ANY ROM to the device regardless of the carrier. Just click RUU.EXE)
1. Download adb tools here: download for WINDOWS or download for LINUX or from the attachments below
2. On your pc click on your local disk C: Drive (or D: drive for some) (WINDOWS users: Start > My computer > Local Disk (C)
3. Create a new folder called "adb" and extract the files from adb.zip into it. Make sure it doesn't create another folder in the adb folder when extracting
4. open command prompt (or terminal for linux) and type "cd" "followed by the path to your adb folder" (windows users can type "cd C:\adb")
5. Ensure your phone is switched on (regular home screen) and connect it by USB in charging mode (Ensure usb debugging is on settings)
6. enter the command "adb devices". This is to confirm your phone is connected. (It should come back with list of devices attached and your serial number)
7. enter the command "adb reboot-bootloader". (nothing further required device WILL reboot in bootloader)
IF it doesn't you can Manually put the phone in the bootloader/hboot mode
Navigate to fastboot by pressing volume down and pressing power button to select (power off > vol down + power on)
It will take you to the fastboot bootloader screen on your phone
Connect your phone via USB
Your Screen should now read fastboot USB
8. enter the command "fastboot oem writecid 11111111"
9. enter the command "fastboot reboot-bootloader (Wait for it to reboot the bootloader)
10. enter the command "fastboot getvar cid" [it should confirm your CID is 11111111]
11. enter the command "fastboot reboot"
12. You can now flash any ROM you like.
To reinstall any stock ROM after this or De-brand or reinstall a different type of Rom (European, Asian, US).
Just click here to download an Official Rom,
Connect to your phone in charging mode. click the "RUU_pyramid_*****.exe" file you downloaded and follow on screen instructions.
I can confirm SuperCID is successful as i just flashed a Tmous Rom (1.25.***) to my EU unbranded device to check. (added t-mobile tv and other carrier stuff to my apps list)
TO DE-BRAND OR REINSTALL STOCK ROM (Changes to Stock S-off, Removes Root and clockwork)
Reinstall your original stock ROM you had (e.g Vodafone, Tmous, Asian, European unbranded etc. if you are changing back to S-ON)
1. Backup all User Data and Apps (Titanium backup Recommended) SKIP THIS STEP IF YOU WANT TO WIPE EVERYTHING
2. Use the SUPERCID method above. (Confirmed to work)
3. If you cannot get superCID to work. Follow this by Alexp999. HERE: any problems PM ME and i will help
Your phone bootloader will read "PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL" after this, Root and clockwork will have been removed now
STEP 5 - CHANGING BACK TO S-ON - PROCEED WITH CAUTION. ONLY DO THIS IF YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO. BEWARE THERE IS A RISK OF BRICKING READ BEFORE GOING TO STEP 1.
YOU MUST Follow this correctly otherwise you could semi-brick your device (Semi bricks recovery by re-flashing RUU). If you follow it correctly YOU WILL GET S-ON SUCCESSFULLY -confirmed by other users
I cannot be held responsible if anything goes wrong but i will help in every situation. 2 unrecoverable bricks so far. 1 due to not flashing RUU
First time i did this with a custom ROM installed - semi-bricked my device (couldn't boot due to security warning as S-on doesn't work with custom roms), restored it using RUU.exe
Second time after S-off i took the following steps and successfully went back to S-ON without any problems and booted up into stock rom.
Confirmed to work by several others as well as myself
1. Follow Step 4 above to get SuperCID - Skip if you already have it
2. Restore your official stock Rom: Just click here to download an Official Rom RESTORE STOCK EVEN IF YOU JUST RESTORED IT RECENTLY OR ARE ALREADY ON STOCK ROM. This is to ensure nothing gets changed in stock for S-on to be successful
So if you are already on a stock ROM or you just went back to stock ROM, i don't care, restore the stock ROM again using the RUU.exe if you don't want to be bricked!
Connect to your phone in charging mode. click the "RUU_pyramid_*****.exe" file you downloaded and follow on screen instructions.
3. Make sure when you download the RUU. download the same or similiar RUU version as your phone came with (e.g. Tmous or EU or Asian etc). As long as you install a stock rom similiar to what you had you should be ok. FAILURE TO DO THIS MAY BRICK YOUR PHONE.
4. Switch your phone on now and let it boot for the first time and just skip through the welcome screen.
5. Go back to Step 4 - SUPERCID and go through 1 to 7 to get to the fastboot bootloader. (so just do what you did before, put adb files in local disk, adb reboot bootloader etc)
6. enter the command "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3" (Thanks Dazweeja)
7. Reboot into bootloader using "fastboot reboot-bootloader" or remove & reinsert the battery and press power on while keeping hold of volume down.
8. Bootloader should now read Pyramid PVT Ship S-ON RL.
9. Remove and reinsert the battery. Press power on as normal
You should now have S-on back and you can return your device or do whatever it is covered again under warranty.
10. IF IT DOESN'T REBOOT and bootloader says ***Security Warning**
Remove and re-insert the battery and go back into bootloader and holding Volume Down +power button select fastboot
11. Run RUU_Pyramid_***.exe to reflash stock rom. (the one u just downloaded in step 1) and then reboot. It should work now
The above method works successfully. So do not under any circumstances try this without going back to stock first using Ruu.exe. and Follow the instructions correctly if you want S-on WITHOUT problems Any doubts or questions PM me and i will get back to you and help you.
Donations welcome as i had a very shaky night experimenting and bricking my device (and having a panic attack over it) to find a safe method for successfully getting S-on back for all you out there complaining about warranty.
To Start Clockwork recovery
1. EITHER make sure fastboot is disabled in settings and shut down your phone
This can be done via Settings > Power> Untick "FAST BOOT" at the bottom.
OR take out your battery and put it back in. (this is easier)
2. Keep hold of the volume down button and switch your phone on.
3. Hboot will start. Navigate to recovery with the vol down button. Press power button to select and enter recovery.
To install a Custom ROM - you will not lose data or apps with this method!
1. Download your chosen ROM by other developers in the development threads and copy the ZIP file to your SD Card ROOT directory
2. Start clockworkmod recovery (instructions above)
3. BACKUP YOUR ROM USING CWM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ROOT! (skip this step if you have already made a backup previously)
4. Navigate to "install zip from sdcard" using the Volume Down button and press select (power button to select)
5. Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"
6. Then select "your_chosen_rom.zip"
7. Then select "Yes - install your_chosen_rom.zip" to confirm
8. Then go back
9. Then reboot.
10. First boot will take quite some time -This is normal, i know you want touch your nice shiny phone but BE PATIENT - ENJOY!

The phone was stuck on the white htc screen during boot up, I left it 15 minutes, but nothing changed. I can get back to recovery, I did have:
-Revolutionary-
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.27.1100
RADIO-11.22.3504.07_M
OpenADSP-v02.6.0.2226.00.0131
eMMC-boot

Whereby the phone was stuck on the white htc screen. I then re-formatted my sdcard and re-flashed an older PG58IMG.zip file to give me:
-Revolutionary-
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.17.1111

But the phone is still stuck on the white htc screen.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated, thanks in advance.
flash newest firmware, if it doesnt work then flash a shipped rom and try the s-off stuff again and then flash the newest firmware, I had exactly the same issue and flashing a shipped rom worked fine.
Thanks for your reply.
I've now grabbed an RUU, but I'm not sure how best to install it, it appears CWM is only looking for .zip files...
woah woah !!! wait a min...
Just read your post in the help thread. The thing your missing is the actual ROM
You've done all the steps correctly, but you havent flashed the ROM, only the superwipe...
Dont panic and flash an RUU, Just flash the ROM and it will boot
After my post I did try flashing a rom and then gapps. Firstly, the rom seem to install awful quick but no complaints, gapps also seem to install ok, but still just sits on white screen with logo.
How big in size was the ROM ? Did you check MD5 Checksums matched ?
I'm trying to install "osp-cm-9.0.0-RC0-pyramid-05-04-signed-2.zip" and its 116,992 KB. No, I didn't check. Let me just go and work out how you do that... Sorry, I've only ever rooted once (CM7.1) and that was my DHD and I managed it without any problems, plus it was a little while ago.
Im not sure of the procedure to flashing CM ROMs on the Sensation... ARHD was my first ROM flash, Since then i havent even attempted to look elsewhere....
I was a MASSIVE CM user on my Galaxy S tho !!

[Q] How to flash the ruu on Att?

4. Reboot your phone into bootloader mode by holding Vol down while it boots
5. From there enter the fastboot menu (vol up and down to navigate, power to select)
6. Plug it in, let your PC install the drivers and such

Somebody messed around on this phone! Hboot 2.0 means, it had Android 4.1 or 4.2.2 already installed.
But when you say, your running 4.0.4 it should be hboot 1.0.
The RUUshould run in your case, so what error do you get? Is USB Debugging on in Settings? Adb & fastboot driver installed? HTC Sync installed?

hi sorry about the delay I had to work late, the phone was bought from ebay by my son, it is has it came from ebay.
I have adb and fastboot drivers installed, but when I connect the phone to the laptop the laptop does not even see the phone.
when I run ruu from the laptop it says can not connect to android device
when I download update on the phone for the os it started to install gets about 3rd of the way through and stops showing a red triangle with an ! in the centre of it, only way to turn it off then is by pulling the battery. when I start phone in bootloader then select recovery it gives options to install from sd card where I coped the recovery file, it starts to install then stops saying signature verification failed installation aborted, I have taken some screen images so you can see, maybe you can work out what is going on

Well, your device is S-off, there are many ways to get latest software.
And this brings the question in my mind: what is the goal you wanna get? Latest Software?
Easiest way would be, to flash twrp recovery and restore a backup from 4.2.2. Should be an easy task, when the device is S-off.
To the RUU "thing", i have copied a guide from HTC website, how tro flash a RUU:
Performing the ROM Update:
1. Download and save the HTC One™ ROM update to your PC.
2. Connect your device to your PC via the supplied USB cable.
3. If the device is not recognized by the PC, ensure you have HTC Sync Manager installed and then disconnect and reconnect the device from the USB cable.
4. Once the device is properly recognized on the PC, locate the HTC One™ ROM Update that you downloaded. Double-click on the file to launch the system update wizard.
5. Follow all of the system update wizard instructions shown on your PC.
6. Once the update is complete, click Finish in the Wizard and the device will reboot.

Well, your device is S-off, there are many ways to get latest software.
And this brings the question in my mind: what is the goal you wanna get? Latest Software?
Easiest way would be, to flash twrp recovery and restore a backup from 4.2.2. Should be an easy task, when the device is S-off.
To the RUU "thing", i have copied a guide from HTC website, how tro flash a RUU:

hi, I guess my ultimate goal is to have an stable working phone with the latest software the htc one sv can have,
yes it is S off, but I downloaded twrp app on the phone but when I open it I get the message the phone needs to be rooted and it closes so even though it says S off twrp does not recognise that its rooted,
when I connect the phone to the computer, the computer does not see the usb device and on the phone just the light to show is charging comes on, does not say usb debugging started or sync etc.
I do not know what has been done to this phone but seems nothing I try works,
I am not the most experienced I need expert help thats why I'm here.

If it isn't broken, we will get it done
We start with "minimal adb/fastboot" -> [TOOL]Minimal ADB and Fastboot or go to the direkt download at afh
Install the exe file and choose a place like desktop, for installation.
Download HTC Sync, install it (software & drivers get installed), then uninstall HTC Sync (only the software, so drivers should stay on your pc).
Download this TWRP backup, which is the latest software for your device.
Unzip it (you will get a k2ul-3114011-422-sense5 folder with some boot, data, system files in it) and put it into a folder on external sdcard that has this folder structure:
TWRP\BACKUPS\Put in here the Serial number of your device (in UPPERCASE LETTERS)\k2ul-3114011-422-sense5
Connect your phone to your pc with usb cable, boot to fastboot mode (bootloader), go to your minimal adb folder and open a cmd window. Type into this window
Code:
fastboot devices
You should get an output with the serial number of your device.
Then we go to www.htcdev.com
Make an account and follow the unlock guide/process until you bootloader is unlocked. Note: you will loose all userdata, so backup everything what is important to you.
Download the TWRP_2871_Recovery.img.zip file here, unzip it, rename it to recovery.img and copy it to your minimal adb folder.
Go to the cmd window in your adb folder (device is again in fastboot mode) and flash the recovery by typing into the cmd
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Now we boot to recovery and there go to wipe -> advanced (steps here could be named a little different, because this is an 2 years old version od TWRP and meanwhile some things have changed, so i'll explain how i remember the things).
Check system, boot, data & cache and swipe to wipe.
Go back to main menu -> restore and if everything was correct, you will see the backup you have downloaded before. Choose it and swipe to restore.
After the restore you should be able to boot into android 4.2.2 software.
If that was fine, we should flash latest firmware for the 4.2.2 software, but that step i'll explain if you are ready for it.
first let me express my thanks for your expert assistance and patience
ok now
download minimal adb/fastboot and install to desktop....... check
download htc sync complete with usb drivers install the uninstall sync leaving drivers installed ..... check
download twrp backup and unzip to sd card with file structure TWRP\BACKUPS\Put in here the Serial number of your device (in UPPERCASE LETTERS)\k2ul-3114011-422-sense5......... check
Download the TWRP_2871_Recovery.img.zip file here, unzip it, rename it to recovery.img and copy it to your minimal adb folder.......... check
connect phone to computer with usb with phone in bootloader...... fail
I opened cmd window in minimal adb, booted the phone in bootloader, put into fastboot
connected usb cable but it still said fastboot, didn't change to fastboot usb so anyway from cmd window I typed fastboot devices but nothing happen just the same line of code appeared on the line below
eg c:\ users\jules\desktop\minimal adb and fastboot> fastboot devices, hit enter
but all that happens is the same line appears below without the fastboot devices
c:\ users\jules\desktop\minimal adb and fastboot>
Ok, not sure whats the problem, but lets try another way first:
Make sure your phone is charged at least up to 50%.
Download this RUU: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24369303960683578
Rename it to PL80IMG.zip (make sure it is not named PL80IMG.zip.zip) and copy it in the external sdcard. Boot into the bootloader and let the phone recognise the zip. Confirm to update with vol+ and let it run until its finished.
i have just done as you directed but it does not recognise the file, it just says no or wrong image ??
looks like some one has done a real crap job on this phone previously
Well, it seems so...
Few things: check if
- the name of the ruu is named correctly
- you have the file in root of your external sdcard
- the md5 sum of the downloaded file is the same as on the afh download site
About the fastboot not recognised:
- try another usb cable
- try another usb port
- or even try another pc
Other suggestion: Sunshine is an app to unlock/soff htc devices. One Sv is supported, as far as i know.
Maybe this app can unlock the phone without to use fastboot/adb connection. But it is a paid app and cost 25,- $.
Only if already used on the phone, the second unlock is free. Maybe worth a try...
would if work if I try through recovery in the bootloader menu?

Tbh, i don't know. Never tried this way, but the ruu should work, from root of external sdcard, when you are in bootloader (not fastboot mode).
Did the same yesterday with my One M8, without problems.
right now I am booting up my older desktop pc, it is windows 7, as laptop is windows 10, will download all software and drivers and try again, heres hoping lol
i have used my desk top computer, downloaded all again but still same result. phone does not see computer and computer does not see the phone,
this maybe a stupid question and if it is please forgive but could the charge/usb port on the phone be faulty?
Yes, possible.
Lets try another thing: go to tis thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2386426 and follow the guide to downgrade hboot (download k2ul version). So we can see if your bootloader accepts PL80IMG.zip. And if succesful, the bootloader will match the software version.
please old.splatterhand i have HTC One SV but i can't do it S-OFF Because His S-ON
and i can't goback to stock rom 4.2.1

Hi! Could somebody help? I have a factory unlocked HTC One SV. The phone doesn't turn on when I try to power it on. I also tried the volume up+power button hard reset, but it didn't worked.
When I connect it to the pc, the device manager says: Relink HS-USB Qdloader 9008 (com 5)
