Can't start after RUU S-OFF and rooted - HTC Desire S

Hi XDA,
I have S-OFF' and rooted my Desire S a couple of weeks ago, played around with CM7 and now tried to run the RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.8_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M_release_225161_signed.exe
The update went well but then the phone restarted, it was stuck on the white screen with green HTC on. I can pull the battery, hold VOL DOWN + POWER to start into hboot(Is it the right name for the menu??) but i don't know have to flash and get back to a working phone.
I have tried to search alot, but keeps finding alot of information but don't know which one I should try first.
Can someone help?
// Daniel

go to recovery and try to wipe cache

It's still stuck on the white screen with green HTC-logo.
I have taken backup's with ROM Manager before i changed ROM, i assume these are placed on the SD-card. Can i get clockwork-recovery back some way? I assaume HTC have overwriten the recovery with there stock-recovery, am I right?

WUHU !! Working again!
What I did was following:
1) shutdown phone
2) VOL DOWN + POWER (HBoot will now start)
3) Plugged in the USB cable
4) Entered fastboot (In USB Mode because of the previous step)
5) Opened a command-promt (run -> cmd) browsed to the folder with ADB and recovery-image
6) "Entered fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-saga.img" without "
7) Rebooted to clockwork recovery
8) restored a backup
9) Again a very happy owner of a Desire S
This was very helpfull: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122694

Congrats! Good work for a noob. It pays to search and do the research yourself, doesn't it? Now you need to modify the title of your post and put [SOLVED] on the front of it let others know the problem has been solved.

Rooting woes :-(

Hi all,
I have recently got hold of a Desire S and updated it a couple of months ago with the standard ota update from O2 (Or branded phone)...since then I have been getting signal errors which I have read about elsewhere.
Anyway thought I would root my phone...I S-off using revolutionary, it did not appear to work the first time, it appeared to s-off the phone but I did not get prompted for the CWM download, second attempt, it informed i was s-off and to download the CWM, I clicked yes and it tried to download but nothing happens.
So as far as I can tell I am s-off but no root. I have tried gingerbreak and superoneclick both of which stall during the process and do not root my phone.
I am very new to this and not sure where to go from here to get my phone rooted.
My Hboot was 98.002 now it shows:
-Revolutionary-
Saga PVT Ship S-off RL
Hboot-6 .98.1002
If I go into recovery I just get a red triangle with an ! and have to reboot the phone.
So I am at a point where I do not know what to do to get it rooted....or can I just get a pre rooted rom and flash that over the top?
Thanks
I'd suggest that to start you change these setting on your phone
Settings->Power->Fastboot = OFF
Settings->Applications->Development->USB debugging = ON
There are various links in my signature, they should all help. Download the adb&fastboot link and extract the files to your c:\temp\ directory on your PC. Then install the HTC drivers then continue and follow the instructions below:
You first need to download CWM recovery image file for this device to your PC into again the C:\temp directory.
Put the phone in Fastboot USB mode (by following instructions below
Unplug USB
Turn the device off
Hold volume down button (HOLD IT) and press power
Hboot will start.
Wait for sdcard scan to complete.
Plug in USB cord connected to the computer
Press power ONCE and Fastboot USB mode starts
Then run a CMD shell from the PC and then issue the commands into it from the directory where you have put the downloaded img file (c:\temp\)
fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-saga.img
adb reboot recovery
To root you phone then
Download and then copy su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip to your sdcard root
Start clockworkmod recovery
Unplug USB
Turn the device off
Hold volume down button (HOLD IT) and press power
Hboot will start.
Navigate to recovery with the vol down button.
Press power to select and enter recovery.
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"
Then select "su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip"
Then select "Yes - install su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip" to confirm
Then go back
Then reboot.
Try to download the pg88img file of cwm our 4ext you find them in the index thread.
Put the pg88img in root of your sd, reboot to bootloader and flash the file. After this the easiest way to gain root would be to flash an prerooted ROM.
Don't forget to make a backup of you're current ROM if anything fails
Swyped from my Desire S
I feel your pain. I am replying to you to make sure you did all the steps required. Furthermore, in using "Superoneclick", which worked for me on my Samsung Fascinate, if I missed a step it didn't work. I.E - I didn 't re-boot!
@ben_pyett you sir are a lengend!!!
what you posted worked...the only slight thing I had to do different was install the htcdrivers first, as it would recognise my phone, then I could do the adb reboot recovery.
It said it failed but I continued to flash su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip and happy days, now to load up a rom!!
many thanks and also to those who replied

Glad to have been able to help.
Now take a backup using CWM so that you have a safe fall back position - just in case!
I'd then suggest updating the recovery to 4EXT which I personally find easier to use.
You'll then find all the ROMS linked within the INDEX thread
Enjoy!
just running a backup now....just waiting for it to finish then to hunt for a rom.
Will probably use rom manger and voidru, seems a popular choice and a good place to start.
Then pay the £1.56 for 4ext
Thanks again

Completely agree with you. Just wanted to point that it is not necessary to pay (thanks to madmaxx82)
Yeah, I just rooted my galaxy tab, installed lagfix etc (feels like a new piece of hardware now, it so fast!)
I first coudnt do it, because i didn't have the Samsung drivers installed (just like the HTC drivers here)
I never actually rooted my desire s manually!.
I just s-offed, then installed custom roms straight away which already come pre-rooted.

It's all there above in post 2
Need info on your device, please write what your boot loader screen looks like

[Q] What next?

From the moment I turned on my phone I knew in my soul that I want to get rid of Sense 3.0
I used HTC's official method for unlocking my bootloader. Because this method is non-orthodox on this website I am wondering what I should do next in order to remove Sense 3.0 and install a fast up to date android OS
Thank you in advance
the first step you already have. s off
please see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
STEP 2. To INSTALL Recovery - v5.0.0.8
1. Download recovery v5.0.0.8 for the Sensation HERE: or Multiupload
2. Copy the PG58IMG file into the Root folder of your SD card (The main Folder of your Memory Card)
3. Turn off your phone FUlly and reboot into the Bootloader/HBOOT screen (see post above on how to get to hboot screen)
4. Press Volume up to Accept when it asks" Do you want to start the update"
5. Press Power Off to Reboot back to android after installation is successful (normal screen with homescreen)
6. Delete PG58IMG from your memory card and you can now root using step 3 below or install a custom ROM using CWM (Customs Roms are already rooted)
7. OPTIONAL: Boot into recovery or Completely switch off (Fastboot disabled or remove and reinsert battery)
Follow STEP 4 SUPER CID sub steps 1-6 to get adb running
8. Enter the command "adb shell cat /sys/devices/platform/htc_battery/power_supply/battery/status" Phone will confirm it is "CHARGING"
Charging issues fixed with new clockwork recovery. writing is now BLUE not purple or orange
Step 3. To permanently root your Sensation - (This means you will NOT LOSE ROOT on rebooting)
1. Download the file su-2.3.6.3-ef-signed.zip from here: DOWNLOAD
2. Copy su-2.3.6.3-ef-signed.zip to your SD card root folder (main folder of your memory card)
3. Start clockworkmod recovery (instructions below. See To Start Clockwork recovery)
4. BACKUP YOUR ROM USING CWM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ROOT!
5. Navigate to "Backup & Restore" using the Volume Down button and press select (power button to select) then select "Backup"
6. Select "install zip from sdcard" after backing up
7. Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"
8. Then select "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip"
9. Then select "Yes - install su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip" to confirm
10. Then go back
11. Then reboot.
12. You're rooted!
If you are getting error messages regarding S-OFF, Rooting or installation - Troubleshoot below in post 2
See POST 2(HERE):
STEP 4. WRITE SUPER CID [YOU ONLY NEED TO DO THIS ONCE]- (continue from step 11 below if you have already done this)
(allows you to flash ANY ROM to the device regardless of the carrier. Just click RUU.EXE)
1. Download adb tools here: download for WINDOWS or download for LINUX or from the attachments below
2. On your pc click on your local disk C: Drive (or D: drive for some) (WINDOWS users: Start > My computer > Local Disk (C)
3. Create a new folder called "adb" and extract the files from adb.zip into it. Make sure it doesn't create another folder in the adb folder when extracting
4. open command prompt (or terminal for linux) and type "cd" "followed by the path to your adb folder" (windows users can type "cd C:\adb")
5. Ensure your phone is switched on (regular home screen) and connect it by USB in charging mode (Ensure usb debugging is on settings)
6. enter the command "adb devices". This is to confirm your phone is connected. (It should come back with list of devices attached and your serial number)
7. enter the command "adb reboot-bootloader". (nothing further required device WILL reboot in bootloader)
IF it doesn't you can Manually put the phone in the bootloader/hboot mode
Navigate to fastboot by pressing volume down and pressing power button to select (power off > vol down + power on)
It will take you to the fastboot bootloader screen on your phone
Connect your phone via USB
Your Screen should now read fastboot USB
8. enter the command "fastboot oem writecid 11111111"
9. enter the command "fastboot reboot-bootloader (Wait for it to reboot the bootloader)
10. enter the command "fastboot getvar cid" [it should confirm your CID is 11111111]
11. enter the command "fastboot reboot"
12. You can now flash any ROM you like.
To reinstall any stock ROM after this or De-brand or reinstall a different type of Rom (European, Asian, US).
Just click here to download an Official Rom,
Connect to your phone in charging mode. click the "RUU_pyramid_*****.exe" file you downloaded and follow on screen instructions.
I can confirm SuperCID is successful as i just flashed a Tmous Rom (1.25.***) to my EU unbranded device to check. (added t-mobile tv and other carrier stuff to my apps list)
TO DE-BRAND OR REINSTALL STOCK ROM (Changes to Stock S-off, Removes Root and clockwork)
Reinstall your original stock ROM you had (e.g Vodafone, Tmous, Asian, European unbranded etc. if you are changing back to S-ON)
1. Backup all User Data and Apps (Titanium backup Recommended) SKIP THIS STEP IF YOU WANT TO WIPE EVERYTHING
2. Use the SUPERCID method above. (Confirmed to work)
3. If you cannot get superCID to work. Follow this by Alexp999. HERE: any problems PM ME and i will help
Your phone bootloader will read "PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL" after this, Root and clockwork will have been removed now
STEP 5 - CHANGING BACK TO S-ON - PROCEED WITH CAUTION. ONLY DO THIS IF YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO. BEWARE THERE IS A RISK OF BRICKING READ BEFORE GOING TO STEP 1.
YOU MUST Follow this correctly otherwise you could semi-brick your device (Semi bricks recovery by re-flashing RUU). If you follow it correctly YOU WILL GET S-ON SUCCESSFULLY -confirmed by other users
I cannot be held responsible if anything goes wrong but i will help in every situation. 2 unrecoverable bricks so far. 1 due to not flashing RUU
First time i did this with a custom ROM installed - semi-bricked my device (couldn't boot due to security warning as S-on doesn't work with custom roms), restored it using RUU.exe
Second time after S-off i took the following steps and successfully went back to S-ON without any problems and booted up into stock rom.
Confirmed to work by several others as well as myself
1. Follow Step 4 above to get SuperCID - Skip if you already have it
2. Restore your official stock Rom: Just click here to download an Official Rom RESTORE STOCK EVEN IF YOU JUST RESTORED IT RECENTLY OR ARE ALREADY ON STOCK ROM. This is to ensure nothing gets changed in stock for S-on to be successful
So if you are already on a stock ROM or you just went back to stock ROM, i don't care, restore the stock ROM again using the RUU.exe if you don't want to be bricked!
Connect to your phone in charging mode. click the "RUU_pyramid_*****.exe" file you downloaded and follow on screen instructions.
3. Make sure when you download the RUU. download the same or similiar RUU version as your phone came with (e.g. Tmous or EU or Asian etc). As long as you install a stock rom similiar to what you had you should be ok. FAILURE TO DO THIS MAY BRICK YOUR PHONE.
4. Switch your phone on now and let it boot for the first time and just skip through the welcome screen.
5. Go back to Step 4 - SUPERCID and go through 1 to 7 to get to the fastboot bootloader. (so just do what you did before, put adb files in local disk, adb reboot bootloader etc)
6. enter the command "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3" (Thanks Dazweeja)
7. Reboot into bootloader using "fastboot reboot-bootloader" or remove & reinsert the battery and press power on while keeping hold of volume down.
8. Bootloader should now read Pyramid PVT Ship S-ON RL.
9. Remove and reinsert the battery. Press power on as normal
You should now have S-on back and you can return your device or do whatever it is covered again under warranty.
10. IF IT DOESN'T REBOOT and bootloader says ***Security Warning**
Remove and re-insert the battery and go back into bootloader and holding Volume Down +power button select fastboot
11. Run RUU_Pyramid_***.exe to reflash stock rom. (the one u just downloaded in step 1) and then reboot. It should work now
The above method works successfully. So do not under any circumstances try this without going back to stock first using Ruu.exe. and Follow the instructions correctly if you want S-on WITHOUT problems Any doubts or questions PM me and i will get back to you and help you.
Donations welcome as i had a very shaky night experimenting and bricking my device (and having a panic attack over it) to find a safe method for successfully getting S-on back for all you out there complaining about warranty.
To Start Clockwork recovery
1. EITHER make sure fastboot is disabled in settings and shut down your phone
This can be done via Settings > Power> Untick "FAST BOOT" at the bottom.
OR take out your battery and put it back in. (this is easier)
2. Keep hold of the volume down button and switch your phone on.
3. Hboot will start. Navigate to recovery with the vol down button. Press power button to select and enter recovery.
To install a Custom ROM - you will not lose data or apps with this method!
1. Download your chosen ROM by other developers in the development threads and copy the ZIP file to your SD Card ROOT directory
2. Start clockworkmod recovery (instructions above)
3. BACKUP YOUR ROM USING CWM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ROOT! (skip this step if you have already made a backup previously)
4. Navigate to "install zip from sdcard" using the Volume Down button and press select (power button to select)
5. Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"
6. Then select "your_chosen_rom.zip"
7. Then select "Yes - install your_chosen_rom.zip" to confirm
8. Then go back
9. Then reboot.
10. First boot will take quite some time -This is normal, i know you want touch your nice shiny phone but BE PATIENT - ENJOY!

Red triangle after official ICS

Hello,
I have troubles with my phone which won't boot. I installed official ICS exe on my computer and after update wizard said that was successfully finished.
When I turn on phone first is HTC sign and then is blank black screen (lightly illuminated) and stays there.
If I remove SD card then I get the red triangle message.
What could be wrong? How do I fix this?
regards
If i press volume down and power:

Do not, ever, EVER, install an official ROM throught the RUU while being on S-OFF
yes, your phone was s-off and you should update by using PG88IMG.zip instead of RUU file.
Do you have goldcard backup? If so you can use goldcard to unbrick.
Yeah I know that now.
I have nothing backed up.
Please do tell me I have hope.

I can boot up to bootloader (vol down + pwr)
I can select:

FACTORY RESET (do not work) phone restarts to HTC logo and then blank screen
SIMLOCK (dont know?)
IMAGE CRC (work)

If you can get to fastboot then surely you should be able to use ADB to connect to your phone?
Please tell me more about ADB? How can I try if I am able to use ADB?
have you tried to enter fastboot, connect to PC with USB, and flash the custom recovery once more? Probably, when you tried to apply the RUU - it overwrote the custom recovery with the official one, so you need to reflash the custom one back, access it, and restore a nandroid backup from within it. Then, either use the method to upgrade to ICS but keep root and s-off, or go completely stock and and upgrade to official ICS (with a possibility to root it), or simply flash the prerooted official ICS ROM
Sorry for my noob questions.
I need some software on my PC to flash from computer? Thank you for all you are helping.

things that you need are:
- ADB.exe
- Fastboot.exe
- few .dll files that allow these two to work on your computer
- Fastboot drivers
- and an .img file of the required custom recovery
You can find all of these somewhere in Desire S forums, just search for keywork "[GUIDE]"
Then you can simply follow the instructions from the guide on how to use the adb and fastboot, and you'll be back up and running in no time
And because you're already S-OFF, all you need to do is get the files I listed above, unpack the archive with them in somewhere like C:/, open command prompt, get into bootloader, select "FASTBOOT", and enter the "fastboot flash recovery (recovery name).img" command, then reboot into bootloader again with "fastboot reboot-bootloader" command, and then you'll be able to access the newly flashed custom recovery to restore your backup, and return your phone to life
Seems complicated in text format, but it's actually easier than you might think
EDIT #1: Look here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186401

you don't need to install anything other than drivers to allow your PC to work with adb/fastboot commands through CMD. And, if I remember correctly, you should also deinstall HTC Sync program and delete any HTC drivers present on your system currently. Then install fastboot drivers, and you're good to go.
Good luck mate
F.Y.I, if your hboot is ENG S-OFF you can run RUU to update and it will NOT brick your phone.
And here is some link for you to install custom recovery:
- HTC Driver:
www.htcaddicts.com/download.php?id=318
- Android tool (contains adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll, AdbWinUsbApi.dll, fastboot.exe):
http://www.mediafire.com/?4dx982z93w8z7wk
- Custom recovery image (4EXT):
http://downloads.saga-lbc-mod.de/recovery-images/4EXTRecovery_v2.1.0_saga.zip
Download and extract recovery.img from the zip file.
How to flash recovery: open DOS command prompt in the folder where edb.exe is located (recovery.img file should be in the same folder) and type:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Hope this help, good luck
Wow vndnguyen!
I managed to acess 4EXT recovery v2.1.0.
Now I restored system to 2.3.5 sense 3.0 HBOOT and other is the same.
What I need now to do to get ICS the right way? Is this guide good? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1858508 I am getting: can't open '/sdcard/hboot.img': No such file or directory
You probably forgot to enable the USB debugging mode? And try to download ADB again
I swapped SD card then it worked.
Successfully installed ICS thank you guys, hope this will be useful for someone.
congratulation

This would be good for recovering from a soft brick as well, maybe this could be our first official sticky?

So... Don't update? I'm still on the original firmware, I don't see any benefit to updating.
Are you taking the update with any toggle mods, root (I.e. Superuser.apk installed), deodexed framework, battery 1% mods, power menu mod, custom boot logo, animation, etc? I never had problems taking the update with stock rom/recovery, unrooted, with no mods installed. I used this guide to restore stock when I was softbricked and bootlooping and the update worked after restoring stock recovery.
Sent from my XT897 using xda app-developers app
screen comes like for a millisecond and then this " starting services" logo doesn't go at all...it just continues forever
any help would be appreciate .

Hm... I thought the line should be
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Obviously replace recovery.img with your filename.

My filename is recovery.img. Is the storage limited? Previouse I had CWM now installed TWRP without deinstall, could this be a problem?

Thank you! Fixed soft brick after a bad system.img flash.
Still wont update. i get a dead android logo after about 30 seconds into the update, then reboots to "The software update failed!"
this is a bit outdated now that we have working RSD Lite files follow the instructions here and use the supplied files for your carrier Sprint or cspire.

Hi. I'm trying to figure this out, but the link for stock recovery you posted is dead.
So I want to clarify what you wrote above... are you saying to follow the instructions here (first post in this thread) but use the recovery.img from one of the zip files in that other link (i.e. asanti_c_sprint-user-4.1.2-9.8.2Q-122_XT897_FFW-5-6-release-keys-cid9.xml.zip)?
Do I need to use "RSD Lite" for something? You didn't mention it in your instructions, but it's mentioned a lot in that other thread...

**URGENT** Semi-Bricked HTC One S

Hello XDA, this is my first post so please bare with me.
I own an HTC One S and I've had it for about a year now. I recently rooted it about 3 or 4 days ago and everything was going smoothly, I pushed Superuser.zip onto the SD card and it worked fine, then I figured I might as well install a ROM manager so I got one off the Play Store, then I downloaded Clockworkmod Recovery and when I booted into recovery to flash it, the phone screen went dark, and wouldn't turn on. When I plugged the phone into the charger, the LED came on and stayed on even if I disconnected the phone. If I hold the power button, the screen flashes very quickly, the LED goes off and about 10 seconds later, the LED comes back on and it's back to the black screen. I had the same problem earlier but I pressed a combination of buttons (I don't remember which ones) and the screen came on so it's not bricked badly, I need help urgently.
Thank you in advance.

1. Go to bootloader (holding power button and volume down button)
2. Find out if it's locked or not.
3. Find out if your phone is S4 version (VLE PVT SHIP) or S3 version (VILLEC2)
4. Relock bootloader if unlocked:
1) Connect your phone to your PC
2) Make sure you have installed HTC Sync (drivers)
3) In bootloader with volume up/down button select "fastboot" then click the power button
4) Make sure it says "fastboot USB"
5) Download the file from the attachment (fastboot.rar)
6) Make a new folder on your C drive called fastboot
7) Extract the contents of fastboot.rar to your fastboot folder (the 4 files from fastboot folder)
8) Make sure your phone is connected to your PC, and you are in fastboot mode
9) open cmd and write:
Code:
cd/
cd fastboot
fastboot oem lock
10) Your phone is now Relocked!
5. If your phone is VLE PVT SHIP (S4) download this RUU ww w.androidruu. com/getdownload.php?file=Ville/RUU_Ville_U_JB_45_S_HTC_Europe_3.16.401.8_Radio_1.11.50.05.28_10.27.50.08L_release_301814_signed_2_4.exe
I recommend you this one but you can choose any other from ww w.androidruu. com/?developer=Ville
OR
If your phone is VILLEC2 (S3) download this RUU ww w.androidruu. com/getdownload.php?file=VilleC2/RUU_VILLEC2_U_ICS_40_HTC_Europe_1.11.401.110_Radio_16.12.20.02U_16.05.20.16_M2_release_263510_signed.exe
I recommend you this but again you can choose any other from ww w.androidruu. com/?developer=VilleC2
(remove the spaces from the links!)
6. Run the RUU
7. It will automatically detect your phone (if in Fastboot USB mode)
8. It will reinstall the stock ROM to your HTC One S, while it will be installing do not touch your phone, and don't even try to disconnect it! You could hardbrick it! You have been warned

Hi, i have the same exact problem. The phone like what OP mentioned, can't be turn on, just a quick flash of white light and nth. Power Button + Vol Down doesn't help either. I'm guessing my phone has the Hard Brick thing. So far, Riff Box JTAG is the ONLY way for this. Hope my country has one and KNOW of one.
