They have to get this right after the s3 4.3 debacle, I only want this pushed out if it is 100% working!

Don't understand the relevance of this thread.
I bought my Note 3 in November 2013 and since then I have been reading that Note 3 would likely be getting Kit Kat in late January / early February.

I wouldn't be so excited about this update.. A friend of mine who has the nexus 5 regrets of it .. The update was only an unthinkable restriction to certain android features.. According to him... My note is flying now on 4.3 and it can do more things than any other device in the market.. So.. Unless the move to KitKat is smooth I would stay in 4.3 for a while... Or I could be wrong.. Will see.. Hehe.

I used to use 4.4.2 on my HTC One, before buying Note 3. KitKat 4.4.2 is nothing special unless you switch from Dalvik to Art, which Samsung will definitely not allow (neither did HTC, I was using the Google Edition ROM).
Other than Art, improvements in 4.4 are under the hood or related to devices with 512mb RAM or less. So don't expect much improvement to Note 3.
However, I'm hoping that Samsung will use the switch to 4.4 as an opportunity to iron out the bugs that cause battery drain. That'll certainly make the ROM upgrade worthwhile.

Not worth it if it BREAKS half the functions on APPs.
Every Update, They keep decreasing the number of functions APPs are able to use in Android.
So apps get more and more dumbed down until they are no different than Apple iOS Apps.

I'm sure all it will do is lock the system some more, like already MJ7 does, compared to MI7 which I have, also probably will get rid of permission settings which I use now and yeah, improving performance on 512MB phones now, when most makers going toward higher memory options, ain't that great? My phone runs good, battery is great, so I think I'll stick to "Don't fix it if it ain't broken" motto for my own good. I updated my old GS3 to 4.3 recently. The only difference I can see is that useless, stupid Knox now loaded on my phone, lesson learned, thanks.

Yea man, feel for ya, gotta be super cautious of the bootloader changing after MJ1.
That's why it's best to not use OTA and read like a thousand developer posts before updating.
But either way, regarding 4.4, eventually you'll have to update once Apps start abandoning support for 4.3 just as they have for ICS.
ICS has lost a large fraction of apps that previously work for it thanks to Dev's abandoning support for older OSes.
This is becoming a serious problem for "oldER" devices moving forward.
Because of this, Android devices really shouldn't have much resale value.
Not only does a device not keep up with NEW features, but it's ALSO LOSING OLD FEATURES.
LOL Android, What a Joke.
Tho to be fair, I understand this to be the cost of breakneck developing speed platforms compared to matured platforms like Windows.

Well, the way I look at it, in about 4-6 months Knox and all those new locks will be mere inconvenience and then if I need to upgrade to get some new programs to run, I will. But I don't share "can't wait to upgrade" attitude of others. I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 8 pretty much on release day, what a stupid move that was and what a pain to downgrade back to Win 7, never mind the money spend.

The point is, if you upgrade to get some programs to run, some other ones will stop working.
Look at Tasker, seems like the number of accessible Google APIs for Apps are decreasing every version.

It'll be interesting to see if custom ROMs and kernels will allow ART to be enabled... however Wanam fails with ART, so people might not bother with it too much.

I was ready to leave Android for WP7, but SGS3...

I was perfectly ready to leave the Android platform for WP7. Either for a Nokia Lumia 900 or HTC Titan II.
But with the release of the Samsung Galaxy S3, I'm kinda being lured back to Android.
Anyone in this kind of predicament? And if so... Any advice?
I'm currently using a HTC Desire. But by now it's very outdated, slow and likes to crash lately.
I really like the design of WP7 but I think it's no alternative to Android. Just think about the possibilities to customize ur system. I really need something new once in a while.
But the design of the SGS3 does not really satisfy me. I really don't like these plastic cases...
IMHO if you were about to jump ship the GS3 shouldn't really make you change your mind. It's definitely not a game changer. Sure it's a good phone, but if I still had my GS2 I wouldn't upgrade yet. If I'll ever go back to Android it will be for no less than a Cortex-a15 and an edge to edge SAMOLED+ HD. If I were you I'd get a Lumia 900 while I wait for the GS4, or even for the iPhone 5 or 6. At least you'll have the chance to try WP for a good while, and if you like it you may also consider getting an Apollo device when they come out. I'm very likely to go for this option, I've been pretty happy with WP7 in the last 5 months. No matter how hard I try, I can't really keep a phone for more than a year, I get bored easily I guess

Its not always about being able to customize your phone. Sometimes its just about being able to USE your phone. I must be getting old because working on android is starting to get boring. Is the Beta test over? I think when people say customize what they are really saying is updating to the latest version of Android because the manufactures aren't doing it. Why should we have to do something that is somewhat expected of the phone manufactures? I'm still waiting on official ICS for my Xoom and Rezound. One thing you can say about WP and iPhone when an update comes out EVERYONE gets it at the same time, not when a phone manufacturer gets to it. That is really starting to get old for me. Maybe I should go back to the old flip phones they never needed updates..
just my 2 cents.. (who cares right?)
Just purchase a used GS2, you have a Desire and you may keep your next device for a long time.

Honestly I don't mind "forcing" an update from time to time. Also, people should start to understand that once that a new version of the software comes out your phone won't brick itself. I mean, if I had an ICS device now I probably won't give a damn about JB when it comes out. ICS is pretty much a full experience, JB will definitely be a minor update, like 2.2 to 2.3. Anyway I must say that I feel pretty much like you. Toying with the phone all day can be fun for a while, but once you're not a teen with nothing to do anymore you may wanna have a phone that just works with no gimmicks. That's why I'm happy with WP7 now. I'm still a nerd tho, don't get me wrong: I'm getting an Android tablet as soon as a good one comes out (Exynos quad please), but basically just for fun. As to my PHONE it's all a different kind of business right now, if you get what I mean

Lots of truth. And with that in mind, I might be tempted to move to iOS or WP7.
But, although I don't live to flash new ROM's all the time or customizing the phone constantly, I do have my phone customized just the way I want it and the way it is most useful to me. This includes, having a custom ICS ROM (I tried 2, settled on one and haven't moved for months, except for updates which are OTA and pretty simple). I don't think I could get either iOS or WP7 (probably mostly because of the lack of some of the apps I have on Android) to behave the way I want them to.
In the case of iOS I speak out of current personal experience. My personal phone is a SGS with ICS. The company I work with gave us iPhones. It's a pain in the ass to use that thing. Simple things such as turning stuff on or off, and the notifications are a joke. Lack of widgets is another weak point for iPhone, among many, many other things. The only really strong point is the camer which takes great pictures. But I end up taking them with my SGS because getting them off the iPhone is another goddamned chore.
I can't begin to count the times when I was doing something on the damn iPhone that takes me a zillion finger taps and thinking "this would be so simple on my SGS with a widget or shortcut or w/e".
In my case it's not really about customization for customization's sake. it's about productivity and, like someone said, being able to use the phone in a simple way. The phone adapts to the way I think, not the other way around.
The GS2 is one step forward and three steps back. It won't be as smooth, as good looking, or as user friendly as WP7, I guarantee that.
i will still go for a S2, and with the S3, S2 price will definitely drop.
the rom community for S2 is pretty awesome too, so yeah another plus point
I find the iPhone bland and screen has washed out colours. Ppi doesn't make a huge difference

Yeah, Microsoft must improve the worldwide support, here in Italy Bing is "beta", and doesn't really work well, so we're stuck with beta software. God, they should at least give us the option to change the default search engine, being forced to use a third party app just to "google" for something is pretty lame.

I believe you should stick to android but SGIII shouldn't be the phone that brings you back. Plastic is a pretty bad material
I'd wait for the price drop and get a SG2. It's a great phone and there's a lot of great ROMs out there.
I bought an Omnia W and kept it for 3 days. Hated it. All of it!
Returned it to the store and got my self a 1 month used SG2... couldn't be happier!

Plastic is more durable than metal or any other material. Take a galaxy s2 and an iPhone and drop them at shoulder height. The galaxy s2 will have a little dent in the plastic. The iPhone would be completely shattered

You may also consider the Gnex actually. Right now you can find it at a lower price compared to the GS2: here in Italy I can find it online for 359€, pretty good considering that the GS2 can't be found for less than 400€, and it's kind of a more "dated" device...

[DISCUSSION]Nexus Brand Name

Before I start, I'd just like to say that this is just my personal rant and even though some of you may not agree, that's why I'm having this as a discussion thread.
Let's get this started then.
All I see going around XDA are people comparing their own devices to the latest Nexus device and saying 'Should I switch to the Nexus?' or a load of people rimming off the Nexus' as if they're the best thing since sliced bread.
Some of you may wonder why this bothers me. I'll tell you.
Just because a device has the Nexus brand name, it doesn't make it any better than any other phone of equal quality. A hell of a lot of people will see a device is a Nexus and immediately want to get it.
Why would you want to?
If you ask one of those people why a Nexus is so great, they'll say one of three things or a mix of the three.
The reasons are;
1) All Nexus devices look great and have great build quality.
2) It's guaranteed to have great developer support.
3) It's officially supported by Google so it will get the latest Android updates before any other device.
Now, let me tell you my response to each of those points...
1) Most Nexus devices don't look great. The only one which looks good, in my opinion, is the Nexus 7. Apart from that, none of them look any better than other devices around.
2) Yes it will have great developer support, but so do a lot of phones which are already around and have been for ages now. An example of that is the Galaxy S2. It's been around for over a year and a half and it still has more development than most phones do
3) Again, this is true. But they're not the only devices to get the Android updates quickly. This site has a smattering of great developers so it will never take long for other devices to get the latest versions, and you haven't even needed to buy a new phone just to get the latest and greatest.
So with that being said, why buy the latest Nexus device when I'm reality it isn't any better than devices which are already available?
I know some of you may be Nexus fanboys and not agree with anything I've said, but I'm hoping that some of you agree just so I know that I'm not the only person who isn't being hypnotized by the word 'Nexus'.
As I said at the top of this post, I'm leaving this as a discussion so if anyone would like to add anything extra or disagree with what I've said, then you can feel free to do so.
But whatever you do, DON'T TROLL OR FLAME OTHER PEOPLE SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU DON'T AGREE WITH THEM!
Agree with all of the above! I'm getting it to replace my GNex.. it's a better device and I don't need two Nexuses

True most other phones have similar specs (lol dnt want a nexus 4 anymore)
any suggestions??
My first real Android experience has been with the Nexus S 4G about one year ago today actually... i replaced my iPhone 3GS...
Being my first android experience, i didn't know what android offered until i physically had the phone in my hands... i had it for two weeks before deciding to root it and try out the latest Android at the time, 4.0 ICS... fell in LOVE with my phone after that... i only realized other Carriers/manufacturers added their own version of android after i got used to ICS and started looking for other devices to upgrade to... once i became educated with android, i realized that i got extremely lucky with my first android experience/purchase... because not only were other devices not officially updated to ICS, but the rollout of ICS took a very long time to even start getting stable ports/builds from developers... the skin thing also turned me off from wanting another device...
Simply put, even tho my phone is rooted, i can only vouch for devices that come with pure Google experience as that was my first real android experience... someone will say that you can always root your device and update as developers push out there latest ROMs for other devices... but i can't promote that to my friends/family that don't even know what rooting means (like myself before)...
i strongly promote the Galaxy S3... in fact just yesterday someone posted on Facebook asking if they should get the gs3 or iPhone 5... i was surprised to see out of around 20 replies, only 2 said to get the iPhone 5... i said gs3 but i also mentioned the Nexus 4 and its amazing price point... she looked it up but liked the gs3 look more... today she bought the gs3 because of that and because the N4 isn't available yet...
Before, if anyone asked me what phone to get, I immediately said the gs3 hands down... now my response is Nexus 4... i prefer the sleek/clean look and curved glass of the Nexus devices... the gs3 would be great IMO if it didn't have hard keys like back/home/menu at the bottom... so with that, the N4 looks better to me than any other device out there... i also loved the look of the Gnex... sadly, that one lacked in specs for me to upgrade my ns4g... and sadly the N4 lacks CDMA/LTE support for me to upgrade... now I'm kinda stuck as to what now?
Hope that was a civil response you want in this thread

I can understand why some would want the pure Google experience, but there are ROMs which provide an extremely close experience anyway. Plus with the added features they have, it seems like the logical choice to go for custom ROMs, at least in my opinion.
If you use the thread linked above, you'll be able to ask there about what device to get next if you're not too sure.
And yeah, that response was all good
Galaxy S3 was a lot slower and laggy compared to my gnex. Went back to my gnex after a week. I buy the nexus for the pure android. Its smoother, cleaner, quicker and just better.

I know custom ROMs are available for other devices... but the only other phone on my radar was the gs3 but I hated those buttons... i enabled the on screen buttons on my ns4g and my kernel let's me dim the light on the capacitive buttons so its like they're not even there anymore lol... i lost some screen real estate but no biggie really...
I was really looking forward to the next nexus and was really disappointed to hear no CDMA/LTE support being that i have unlimited with Sprint now and I'm gonna be switching to a special unlimited plan with Verizon in a month or so... i really wanted to continue using nexus devices but looks like I'll have to go elsewhere for now... luckily, I'm content with this ns4g being that i got it tuned nearly perfect for good performance... the SD read is still a bit slow tho... i can survive until something wets my appetite again like the N4... or I'll just get the SGS4 if nothing comes out before then...
Btw, I'm on 4.1.2 right now running most apps from 4.2 system dump... so this 2year old phone can even take photosphere, and quite well i might add... no rush to upgrade devices... if rather put that money to getting the Nexus 10

Another reason is that all of the hardwares of Nexus devices are guaranteed to be open, unlike most Samsung touchwiz devices.
Another one is that new nexus devices are all have insanely low prices as they are subsidized by Google.
Also, now nexus devices have the greatest fastest socs in the market. Just look at nexus 4's S4 pro and nexus 10's Exynos 5.
In response to your opinion,
1. Not all nexus devices have great build quality, especially those ones made by Samsung. But in my opinion, all nexus devices have great design and look. Just look at the nexus 4. It's one of the most gorgeous phones in the planet.
2. For your information, the development of the Galaxy s2 is now dead. Also, the galaxy s3 is almost dead. Those are caused by their closed source drivers.
3. Nexus devices are the first to get the STABLE, latest android version.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
The reason is that the Nexus line keeps choices simple. Also, they don't have bloat (TouchWiz, Sense, etc) - and don't say get an AOSP ROM. I have heard that they are nothing but trouble. I quite like the idea of my tablet looking like it's running the same OS as my phone. And personally, the Nexus 4 is the best looking phone out there IMO, even compared to the iPhone 5 and the Samsung S3 (the style/position of the home button killed that design). I really like the UI design of stock Android too, it's not childish or cutesy looking like the bloat or iOS. I'm into the whole 'sci-fi' theme of it.
Also, looking at most other phones, they generally fall short in certain areas, whereas the Nexus devices as of late are looking relatively well considered. After using a Galaxy Nexus, I despise the current state of AMOLED tech. That rules out almost every Samsung phone under the sun. HTC One Xes supposedly have sucky battery life (plus, Tegra 3 vs a quadcore Snapdragon simply isn't a competition at all), and I've decided that lasting less than 5 hours with the screen on (for any mobile device, tablet, phone, whatever) just isn't good enough anymore.
Tablet-wise, for an Android tablet, there is no comparison to the upcoming Nexus 10. The Note sucks and the Infinity really sucks. The iPad wants you to get into the whole Apple ecosystem with Macs and iPhones to really get the best out of things like iCloud and whatnot, and Mac sucks for software & games.
The only real competitor to a Nexus is Windows 8 and WP8, which both look great (better than Android except for the whole 'Bing' thing) but their ecosystems aren't ready for real use yet. I have to say, the Lumia 920 is packing some awesome technology, and with the winter season coming I would really appreciate the touch screen you can use with gloves on. Not to mention the typical Nokia build quality, plus it seems to have everything covered.
The Nexus phones are the quickest to get updates and don't have any OEM skins or bloatware that is forced on the users. While an AOSP ROM can be ported to any phone in theory, it takes time and there are usually hardware issues due to closed source or unavailable drivers, and also locked bootloaders.
The problem with the Nexus line is its sort of like Apple's devices in the sense that there is limited hardware choice and device's memory can't be expanded. My personal hardware tastes are for a smaller device with no more than a 4.3" screen and it must have a microSD slot. I'll put up with OEM skins, bloatware can be frozen with root, as hardware is more important to me than software. But everyone it entitled to their own opinions and preferences.
Nexus phones do have bloat. Google+, google currents, Google earth, google movies, Google books, etc. All /system apps that can't be removed. Most of them are useless.

Add to that my phone is my main music player hooked up to amp and speakers, I love that I can dual boot to get Samsung best bits(few!)

1) I'll agree not all Nexus look great, though that's a real personal preference thing. I for one, would prefer the Nexus one look over the Nexus s. I currently own a Gnex and I'd be honest in saying it looks alright, but I would like some changes made (Nexus 4, comes close)
2) To be fair, of course the S2 (and noteably other handsets) will have a large dev support, in terms of quantity they sell a lot more than the Nexus family (exception of the Nexus 7, that's the first Nexus priced aggressively)
3) Quick =/= first to get updates. Some people just want the newest FIRST.
I personally choose the nexus because I don't want to be caught with a device that will have a short support life (mentioned above). History shows the Nexus WILL have the most official updates:
Nexus one: Shipped with Eclair, last official version was GB
Nexus S: Shipped with GB, officially supported till Jelly bean
Gnex: Don't know yet, but its gone from ICS to JB.
If you go to dev section, there are even newer (unofficial builds) I don't buy phones every year so I want a phone that will last me 2 years at least.

I don't think carriers are locking boot loaders to hinder development, in a strict sense. I believe they're doing it to force people to upgrade their devices more often, in order to gain any new innovations from OS upgrades. Take a look at the Samsung Infuse, a phone which was orphaned almost from the time of it's release. Thanks to a developer named Scott Hart, you can run kitkat 4.4 on it. If people hold on to their phones longer, profits go down.

I take your point and it's a good one. I do not know-for sure-the reasoning behind it just the result. Ironically, I do know that the majoritu of innovation-in my view-have come from xda members saving these carriers a lot of money in R&D. I remember loading CM on a tiny little phone a few years ago to get innvations that are now incorporated standard on most phones.
I would say it's interesting that I am continuously reminded what a small insignificant percentage xda members make up -- interestingly to argue diametrically opposed views.

@NumbrR7: I second your point. I think that really grates (angers) me that most of the "new" phones are mostly incremental updates (i.e. better camera, updated OS). On another note, Oppo (based in mainland China) is gaining a niche for themselves because, from what I understand and read, the OS is developer-friendly and comes factory unlocked out of the box. USA carriers won't let that happen -- oh the horror. <rolling eyes>
Again, I affirm your position on this, numbR7.

Corporate greed and capitalism. Having said that, I disagree, to some extent, with their line of thinking. I have the galaxy s, s2, s3, s4, s5 , and note3. I have had a custom Rom on every single device up until the s5 and the note. Rooting and updating to the latest OS only made me want the new hardware even more. But alas, I too think it might be fading. When it does, I think the opposite will happen, and I will hang on to my device longer. I am already thinking of going back to the s4 with Shostock on it, for my daily phone.

I don't exactly agree with your first sentence (but it's worth discussion on a different type forum). That said. Your point is otherwise very well taken. You may get a new feature (maybe a new fade) but lose everthing else (that the freedom of controlling your own device gives you) suddenly that extra megapixel or two doesn't seem worth $650. Yep I'm sure of it! I think you have a really good point. I know it's a tad different but I choose to stick with Hyperdrive 15 (4.3) to avoid the hassles with SS and 4.4. That is NOT to say that I am bad mouthing SS. To the contrary, it's saved my behind. Hows that for nice language? Lol
Scott's still going with the Infuse?! Good on him! I loved that little phone. If it weren't for the problems with the video camera, I'd still be using it.
Well, this might rub some the wrong way but if all carriers started locking their bootloaders and forced buyers to choose based on hardware alone, I'd buy an iPhone. I love the little innovations that have come with an open Android - like Paranoid Android - but the hardware is usually underwhelming. The S4 has the screen going for it, but that's it. Apparently Apple will finally use larger screens on their iPhones so not much win for Samsung.

I think you're right especially if the screen is bumped up. With the bootloader situation you already have an "i-droid" anyway. "Open source" no longer has meaning.
Hopefully this will accelerate the people looking at buying much cheaper phones that aren't locked to any specific carrier and also aren't boot locked. The effectiveness of upgrades is dimishing which should help push this shift and hopefully will ultimately keep these big phone manufacturers honest.

I've already looked into those "cheaper" phones. Most of them, right now, anyway, don't have LTE chipsets yet. In addition, 4G just rolled out in China (we get the new stuff first -- obviously). However, the cheaper phones are made and shipped factory unlocked. Some phones have a dual sim slots (i.e. one sim for personal, one sim for business).
I'm partnered up with a wholesaler and have access to everything he carries. The best part is that he doesn't "compete" with whom he partners up with -- bad for business, he says.
My .02 =)
as others have said it's just the way of big business in the 21st century. up until a week ago i had a 2 year old S2 which was running a 4.4.2 ROM (ressurection remix). if i hadnt been able to root and flash a ROM i'd have probably got myself a new phone long ago so locking down phones may get customers to upgrade more often (i know it would with me) as it is i bought my new phone outright and have gone payg to save myself some money and also to be able to upgrade as and when i like. i did look at some of the chinese phones (goophone being one) but wasnt sure of the root capabilities so decided to give it a miss.
i think even locked bootloaders will eventually be hacked. nothing is impossible. it's just down to when and how long we wait.
I took a brief reprieve from this forum, since there wasn't any groundbreaking progress made (and by "groundbreaking", I mean exploited bootloader).
It looks as if that has remained unchanged? I've only had the S4 for a year now, but I am officially "over" Samsung devices. Very aesthetically pleasing, but hardly functional overall. Battery is crap on every Samsung device, and the only thing that ever helped me was either buying a 3rd party with larger capacity, and/or running a custom ROM/kernel combo that allows for both less consumption as well as rapid-charge.
I'm interested to see this new thing Google is going to unveil to replace the GPE phones. I have no issue paying full price for a device that I can do whatever I want with, and know that there will be a strong following for. Even if that following is only a certain, small niche of the overall market.
It's a shame that my fun with AOSP had to come to a screeching halt, I loved the simplicity and functionality of it.
I don't think carriers make much or any money from selling new hardware. They make their money from plans.
That said, I'm happy to be on 4.4.2 SlimRom. ☺

Well, even if I sold my i337, the battery life was honestly very good for me. There's the facts that maybe I don't use it heavily every day, but I turn GPS on only when I have to find a specific place I haven't been to before. GPS down - battery life up. 3G down, unless I need it - battery life up. Power saving mode - battery life up.
As for the Android Silver program, we all are curious to see how will this turn out.

Praying (and Paying) for Root with Bounty

Coming from the Note 2, Note 3, and Note 4 Developer Edition, I'm hoping the LG V10 can be rooted and have an unlocked bootloader for custom ROMs. If not, I'll be sticking with my Note 4 DE even longer.
Update:

XDA Members,
I have been trying to update the spread sheet to keep people accountable for what they had pledged. If you have installed root using Tungkick's method please donate to him. If you have donated; Thank you for keeping your word! I encourage you all to do what you had promised. Donating the full pledge amount would be very appreciated as well. So far it is looking like Tungkick is well below the estimated value of what you all pledged. Please help make things right and follow through on your end.
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY DONATED PLEASE PM ME (with your name or email that comes through when you send a Paypal payment AND what XDA user name I should tie that donation to).
When you donate it would be helpful for you to put your XDA member name in the comments.

Yea same here...i will hold out a month or two after it comes out to see how the development scene will become
I kinda wonder if the buyers of this device even care about such ?
verge said v10 is for content creators and g4 is for content consumers. if anything the consumer version is what people will tinker with.
the v10 should have everything you need ottb without having to futz around.
This is isn't a competitor to the note. i'm wondering what the g pro will be like.
Why do you say it's not a competitor to the note? It's certainly a flagship+ type device? Not trying to argue, just want to know your thinking. I've been a note guy since the original, but now with the 5 and the fact that they got rid of sd storage (I'm a big fan of emulator gaming) and the removable battery, I'm shopping around. The V-10 looks to have everything I have with the note 4 (except the s-pen which is rarely used). And the V-10 has some style to it that makes it not look like every other phone out there right now.
I tend to agree, I think this is a competitor to the Note series as well. If the only competition for the Note series are phones with a stylus, that doesn't leave much.
If you don't consider this to be a competitor, just curious as to which phones you belive are?

CVE-2015-6602 is the key for V10 root
Just curious as to what people think are the key reasons for rooting these days.
I have a note 3 and will be looking to upgrade to this when it comes to the UK.
My note 3 is rooted and I did it mainly to get more advance features for Tasker.
Now I very rarely use Tasker so don't think I will be rooting my next phone unless there is a good reason to?
Cheers

Just saying if you don't want, don't do it. OR choose a closed system. There's choice.
Wasn't pointing you personally, just saying my thoughts about it.
Android is a great OS, mainly because you've got a full access to it, and can change/customize almost everything. Not rooting it may be OK for many users, but that's jumping beside the swimming pool. Just my point, as you asked our point about rooting devices...

Hmph.
I'll say this. I have had my LG G3 for over a year and a half, that is longer than I have kept any phone since I began my Android venture with the G1. I had the G3 rooted for about 3 weeks. I have always had my devices rooted. I'll say this - though the option to root and unlock the bootloader would be very nice, I have found myself very fond of the LG UI - for a manufacturer UI skin, LG's takes the cake. Far less memory hungry than sense or TouchWiz, and the phone remains very snappy.
I have no need for root with the power of these devices now, the leaps and bounds in camera software, etc.
I think the software on these phones, while skin dependent can slow it down, has moved leaps and bounds past that of 3 years ago. There are some useful aspects of it. For instance, one major reason I and most others are looking heavily at this phone is the camera - well I have news for you if you didn't know - most of that is software driven, software that is not available on an AOSP based ROM. Sure, the phone might be a hair faster, but if you can't use the beautiful 16 MB camera on the back to it's full potential (The highlight of an amazing phone) is it even worth it?
Now, the answer might be yes to you, and it might even be a yes for me when I get the phone in my hands (if, lol), but I would bet that I am not alone in my stance, and I'm sure that there are others here that used to be flashaholics that no longer have a true need for it.
Of course, if you are using a Samsung device or HTC, sure I see a need because that OS skin is horrendous. BUT, with a phone with this hardware, with a fairly light skin, and from what I can see amazing camera software/hardware... Do you need to root this thing?
I suppose you can justify root without bootloader, however again, I do not need it thus probably won't go there.
I am not bashing you, simply stating where I come from now, and how my thoughts and needs have changed on the issue of ROM flashing in the last year with my still amazing G3.
I am only now looking for a new device because I felt this year would bring amazing devices... So far, the only two really worth looking at are the Nexus 6P - which is only available in the states through Google/Huwai, and this V10. Maybe the OnePlus 2. Maybe.
Cheers.
I'm using Xperia Z2, since mid 2014. I'm still on stock based firmware. As you stated, camera, as well as audio performance, are better with stock based roms than with aosp based roms. But there's many rom cookers taking stock brand firmware as base, but add many features, or great optimizations.
Even my wife, who doesn't know anything about android and OS stuffs, needs root. Why? Simply because there's always a bunch of bloatware, or apps not needed because you're using one for years doing the same thing in a better/more suitable way.
I agree that unlocking the bootloader isn't so useful anymore, just a flash and test junky thing. But root is so helpful in many ways. Just one thing why I couldn't use phone without root : all those terrible ads everywhere, on the web and on YouTube. Soooo annoying. Used my phone 2 weeks before rooting, I was going crazy just about ads here, ads there, ads everywhere!
Edit : installing an alternative launcher already keep you away from most of worst things of "skins" from brands.

Precisely. I understand and echo everything you point out. I have always used Nova Launcher.
Yes, bloatware is a problem. However, besides that, I really don't have a need for root in general, it's just a fun thing to have and mess with. I don't like messing with my phone much anymore since I have important things on my plate, calendar, phone calls, etc.
I don't understand why people say they love ad blocker, I haven't had an issue with ads, in fact I don't see many AT ALL, and I don't have mine rooted...
I see the most in the TapaTalk app, other than that nothing really...
Root saves me the $30 a month extra I don't have to pay Sprint for Wi-Fi tether: that's reason enough for me to root all my devices.
I have always rooted every one of my devices dating back to my og. That said, it seems it's getting harder and harder to gain root on some of these new devices. Doesn't Xposed work on non rooted devices? If so, won't that along with a new launcher satisfy the craving for root? I'm asking because my next phone will probably be the V10 and I'm fearful root might not be gained.

Other older phones are getting...

6.0 update first than the note 5....
And when you go to another manufacturer they may be worse at the next update than Samsung is. There is no consistency when it comes to updates. I have had HTCs that got updates way after Samsung did. It's all pretty much luck of the draw unless you get a Nexus device.
I get your frustration but updates alone do not determine the quality of a device or the manufacturer. Anyone come from a Note 4? Remember the 5.0.1 update that murdered the battery life? I do. 5.1.1 runs beautifully on my phone for now. I'd rather wait a bit longer for a polished update that actually improves my user experience than get fast, half-baked updates that make things worse.
I agree. Note 4 was killed. And I bought nexus 4 after so much hardships and the first update it got was after Motorola and nexus 7 devices. Hahahha even nexus ditched me.
As bad as it is, if you want steady updates get a nexus. I swore off samsung long ago but still played with a note 3 from time to time then one day in Costco, I saw they were running a promotion on the Note 5 where you get all the pay offers but also a $250 Costco card and when I added it all up plus the headphones, wireless charger and the portable charger the deal was just to good and I bit. I do miss frequent updates, the freedom of running whatever I wanted or compiling my own with various cherry picks but I new that going into another samsung device. You have to consider the advantages of the Note 5, it's arguably one of the fastest phones, good camera, good battery life and the s-pen. For all that you don't get zero day updates.

I did want steady udpates but couldnt afford to pay full price on a nexus 6p. I couldve got the 6s+ but I came from a 5s so i wanted to try something new. Note 5 was the best when comparing them to the other android flagships at the tmobile store... so i chose it. Before, i heard from someone or an article stating that samsung was going to push updates quicker this time around, and that google will pressure manufacturers to release updates more early. I guess samsung didnt care.. i learned my lesson. This is also my first samsung device.

I understand what youre saying but how long has marshmallow been out? Since october, right? Almost 4 months. And manufactures are already releasing 6.0 update to their devices.. Eh... whatever. I shouldnt complain, because i dont like complaining. But, i just hate it when people dont keep their word.
I think I'm missing the point here. The pic you posted specifically states only a few Lg G3s got the update. I understand your issue is that it's an older phone and it still got MM before ours did, but even if you were to ditch the Note 5 for a G3, there's still a solid chance you won't be on MM. The only way to guarantee you get the latest update timely is to get a nexus. It's a total crap shoot when it comes to OEMs and updates. This year Samsung is behind, next year it will be another OEM, then another after that. Just about every OEM specific forum complains about slow updates.
Right now, 5.1.1 runs like a bandit on the Note 5. I'd rather Samsung polish it up and release a fully functional, bug-free update, than rush it out the door and destroy my battery life. Plus, who's to say that MM doesn't run like poop on the G3?
My T-Mobile Note5 has had 4 updates already. So technically, Samsung is pushing updates faster. Plus, I mean, it's difficult to punish the manufacturers when the carriers are often what causes delays. I'd rather they take their time then push out a crappy, half-baked update. I don't feel as though I am missing out on anything. I have an M9 (international version. US carriers haven't pushed it) running Marshmallow and it's not all that much different on the surface. Sure Marshmallow adds Doze, permission and more under the hood goodies, but it isn't the be all end all of updates.
Yoshi1221 said:
Frustration is understood, but you also expressed your opinion on other posts. If your really that pissed off, just change different brands. Don't keep complaining. Look at the Note 4 thread complaining about the Note 5 features. Everyone that bought this phone should have known from the start that Samsung may not be "timely" with their updates. So? If your phone is working fine, then why complain about it now. If you go to an iPhone 6s+, just warning you, you will miss the features of Android. If you want updates to happen at a timely manner, go with the nexus 6P or 5X since they get updates straight from Google.

That what kills me, if it works then why be chomping at the bit for the next update in such a way that now you have to run out and get an iPhone. I mean even with the security argument of having older versions of android, now with how they drop service updates that even becomes a thing of the past.
If updates are that important to someone then being an informed consumer would've done this guy a lot of justice instead of running out and impulse buying The Next Big Thing, only to throw a fit over it later.
I would have gotten the 6p if carriers sold it since my work provides my phones as long as the carrier or my choice sells it.
I went with the Note 5 as the best alternative option for my wants and an very happy with the device. Being the first Note I've owned, I really am amazed at how much I like and use the s-pen and at this point don't think I'd want to give it up for the 6P if I could.
The only I'm looking forward to with marshmallow is Doze and the finger print API being switched over to Androids own implementation as I hope it allows me to use my finger print with play store purchases.
All of this talk is making me hungry. Guess I will go have me some marshmallows since my phone can't
Can't rush perfection lol
Looks like sammy is learning from its past
This is been going on since I had the vibrant back in the day. Nexus devices are the only sure way to get updates in a timely matter.
Seriously why do people get up in arms about updates? Marshmallow isnt even that big of a deal anyways. Coming on here and saying you're done with Samsung all because your phone didn't get the update yet is...well...kind of pointless.
Not saying you dont have a right to voice your opinion, but its pointless to get upset over an update. We don't even need an update. Are we really going to benefit from MM? Straight up no.
Leave Samsung, fine. But dont do it just because of a software update. Do it because they suck at making great devices, which obviously they don't.
I'm glad you're able to get a Nexus, at least you will finally be happy to get updates. It sucks losing a fellow device user, but it is what it is.

A what other phones have received Marshmallow? Just a couple and those aren't US carrier phones. The fact is, most often US carrier branded phones don't ever get updates before international unlocked phones. The carriers are to blame for that, not the manufacturers. Realistically, very few phones have the Marshmallow update.

Doze will help battery life, and some people are into permissions selection, but that's about it. It's a mentality that some folks have. If they don't have the newest and "best" they feel as if they're missing out. Like I said, I have an HTC M9 running Marshmallow and it's kind of a meh update. Not nearly as exciting as Lollipop was. It's just a mindset with some folk. *shrug*
I agree with others here in regards to Samsung/TMO pushing out smaller updates faster. When that stagefright crap went down, and pretty much all OEMs said 'we are going to start releasing monthly updates', I laughed. No way that was going to happen. 3 or so months later and they have actually been doing a pretty good job. Baby steps.
And let us not forget, TMO doesn't help the problem... they usually make it worse. Two levels to updates.
