OK, i searched, I researched and found so much conflicting information. Some posts in red caps say THIS IS EXPIRED NOW BECAUSE OF UPDATE..
I want to put a custom ROM on my ATT One - X. I'm brand new to this, but fairly computer savy. So, with out getting flamed, could someone PLEASE direct me to the appropriate link that will effectively with out too many headaches, lead me to be able to root my phone, and then install a custom rom?
Thx!

Depends on what software version your on if it's 2.20 then no you can not root your phone at this time. If it's any other version besides 2,.20 then yes check this thread.
[INDEX] AT&T/ROGERS One X Resources Compilation Roll-Up (Updated 9/17/12)
If your stuck with 2.20 then you can follow the progess for root here
Root 2.20 Think Tank
Depends on what software version your phone is running. For US AT&T phones, if you're running 1.73 or 1.85 then it's rootable. If you're on 2.20, then you're out of luck at the moment. Good luck.
Also - mind the "PLEASE DON'T POST QUESTIONS IN THE GENERAL FORUM" thread. We've got a Q&A sub forum here for that.
Cheers,

I know your pain of all the conflicting and outdated stickies and guides. It took me several hours to try the different methods that might work. I ended up lucking out and getting one with 1.85, and used this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296
One thing to add is that when you hit the check for updates button, let it sit. It will look like its doing nothing, but hitting it again will start the download. Took my 4 factory resets and several tries, but it finally worked. Then you SuperCID, unlock Boot loader, install TWRP. Those guides were easier and once rooted they all work, its just the rooting that's tricky.
And as mentioned this all goes out the window if it arrives on 2.20.
Good luck.

Pray tell, which stickies are outdated???
My index thread here is updated at least weekly (sometimes more often, if there is a lot of dev activity). And the date it was last updated is clearly indicated in the thread title.
This index thread clearly lists the working root methods; and what firmware the method applies to is clearly stated, either in the thread title, or I've made a note to indicate it.

As stated in the first line of the thread this method no longer works, but I wouldn't know that until I went to the thread. "ACT NOW" Why is this still in the guide as a viable option? Why isn't it noted that this no longer works?
Note to add to guide: This method no longer works and is only in the guide for reference purposes
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633071
Bootloader must be unlocked first. How do you unlock the bootloader? Root. Wait, what? Round and round we go. Why not note this method only works for phones with the BL already unlocked?
Note to add to guide: This method only works for non-AT&T branded phones that can have the Bootloader unlocked. BL must be unlocked before rooting, see thread for details.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1684382
None of those methods worked when I tried them.
Note to add to guide: Reports of this method not working for phones shipped on 1.85.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296
Only method that worked with my phone. I am not used to ADB, so I tried EVERY other method several times first. And as I stated, this guide could use some additional steps to help avoid some scary situation where you are in the middle of downloading the udate you fear and have no idea how to stop it. Hint: Reboot doesn't work, you must factory reset again to stop the download.
This is why it took me almost 4 hours to root my device.
The guide could flow something like this:
Do you have an AT&T branded version?
- No --> Unlock the BL [here], and root [here] or [here]
- Yes --> proceed
What firmware are you on?
- 2.20 --> STOP you cannot root
- 1.85 --> Try the ONE method the works [here] (for reference [this] method used to work)
- 1.73 --> Try one of these methods [here][here][etc]
The rest of the sticky is fine. But everything hinges on rooting your device, and it is so confusing to try to figure that out for a new user to the phone. I appreciate the guides that do exist, that is why I don't complain in the guides, just try to assist the other people new to the device by explaining my experiences just last week. I imagine the only way to test the method is to get a brand new phone, and try it. Something that is not reasonable. But, just by reading the OP and the last page of each thread I could make the above observations that would help the guide.
Not trying to be dis-respectful at all, but you asked what was outdated. It is very confusing for a new person to this phone without all the history of the last 6 months.
I wonder which is clogging up the forum more. People who "aren't searching properly" or the ones who reapeatedly post over and over again complaining about it. Jeez..

I'll agree that my index can use some updates as you suggest (although some of your comments are a bit too nitpicky for my taste). But you're talking about a few lines of a rather extensive index. To dismiss it all as "outdated" is an insult to many hours I've taken to create and continually maintain the thread. Your tone may not be disrespectful, but it certainly sounds ungrateful.
If you had issues with the index, you should have replied on that thread with your suggestions or PMed me when you found the updated items, just like I ask in the intro to the index. Complaining about it in another thread is the wrong way to have gone about it.
With respect to you, and not realizing it is your thread, I can understand you being frustrated with all the work you put in to it. So, I'm reply basically to say thanks for the work that you do.

I've spent a lot of time and effort to create and maintain the index thread for people to use. Its a sticky at the top of Development, no searching is required, and it lists most any resource you will need for this phone. Tons have people have gotten themselves into serious trouble soft or hard bricking their phones, or otherwise wasting a lot of time, when they could just used the index, and avoided all that.
I'm sorry I'm "clogging up the forum" with my index. With post like this, I sometimes wonder why I fricking bother.

I think we were typing are responses at the same time. Thanks for the retraction. I was pretty pissed off by your earlier comment!
My apologies... I got frustrated because I've read so many people complaining about using search lately, that it seems more prevalent than the people not using search. I tried to delete the post after I wrote it, but since I'm new I had to wait 5 minutes. I replied after that post saying thanks for your work. Again, please accept my apologies and my gratitude for doing what you do.

Both of those stickies link to root methods that do not work. They are in the General and Q&A sections, and are titled for N00Bs to start there. As a N00b to this device that is where I started. That is the only sticky in the Q&A section, and my first question was "How do I root this phone?" In the Samsung forums these types of guides are in the General section.
As I said I do not mean to be ungreatful or disrespectful. That is why I did not complain it's outdated in the thread. Something that is taboo on XDA. Lowly members are flamed for challenging RCs, Devs, or Mods. I understand you put a lot of time into that thread. I can imagine the countless hours you put into compiling it. I think that rooting the phone is the most important part of that guide because nothing else in the guide is possible without root, and as such it should be accurate and clear. It's also the most confusing part of the guide, and the One X forum in general. I do appreciate the time and effort you put into your guide, and if I thought suggestions on the thread would be have been received peacefully I would have commented there, I apologize for bringing my issues up in a way that offended you. The Samsung forums have a total different feel and unwritten procedure, I am still getting used to the One X forum.

I've been around here for 5 years, over the course of 5 devices, and I've never seen anyone flamed for suggesting to correct/revise a guide. Asking for ETA on a ROM update is the closest I've seen to what you are saying (usually not a good idea). But people who have written guides, indexes, etc. are typically very open to comments on how to improve their thread and keep it up to date. They made the thread to help people, and want nothing more than to have it do so effectively. If they don't update it, its usually because they don't have the time.
Also keep in mind that my index is meant to be a listing of resources, not a guide, per se. I've tried to add some additional info in the index to help folks along. But I can't claim to be an expert on every link (or anything close to an expert). For instance, when it come to root, I rooted way back on 1.73. So I've never even tried any subsequent root methods. Therefore I can't personally validate them, I can only try to comment on what I've read others post.
Not being a developer, the index is the one thing I give back to this community (along with random posts trying to help others). I'm completely open to suggestions to make the index better, and more up to date. I've already incorporated the suggestions you made earlier.
Cheers.
I recently upgraded from a Nexus 4. I was unlucky when I purchased my S4 because it came with the MF3 firmware. It's really important for me to be able to run custom roms on my phone. I know that using the safestrap method I can install TW based roms but I'd like to have more options available to me. It seems as though this has been the case for a while now. Should I just return my phone and purchase something else or wait for a fix in the future? Also, with the 4.3 update coming soon for the AT&T S4, will this effect my ability to use the safestrap method?

A. You need to search, the question you asked about safestrap has been answered several times as well as it can be answered at this point.
B. Only you can decide if you want to take the phone back or not. How is anyone supposed to make that decision for you? If you need information to help you make the decision, I suggest you read the "pinned" threads in the General and Q&A sections and also read the threads that are on the front couple of pages of those sections. Good luck.

I would say return it if you really care about flashing custom roms, get the nexus 5 if you want pure Android experience. Otherwise, you could keep it and wait for the flashing method to becomes available.

I say return it. There a plenty of options out there. My girlfriend just bought the lg g2 it's a very good phone. Or like was mentioned above the nexus 5 if you want pure android.

... thanks buddy. the reason i ask is because maybe there is a developer reading this who might be able to give me a clearer timetable on when a fix might be released. it seems as though this has been an ongoing problem with no fix in sight. if the problem were to be fixed within the next month or so i'd be interested in keeping the phone. hence, why i ask the community for advice. it's not as though i'm a little child who doesn't know how to spend his money. and my question about the update/safestrap issue isn't clearly answered on the OP's FAQ... maybe if i sifted through thousands of pages. you go out of your way to write a lengthy MOD EDIT response yet fail to answer the question that could be easily answered much faster.
Anyone who buys an S4 or Note 3 from AT&T right now isMOD EDIT And did not do their homework before buying.
I'm lucky because I got my S4 the first day it was released, so I can run any ROM I want, including AOSP. But as of recently, nobody who buys a new S4 or Note 3 can run REAL custom ROM's, ever (as of today). And I'm talking AOSP of course.
When the first of my two current AT&T contracts is up (June '14), I'm ditching AT&T and going to T-Mobile.
I'll sell my used S4 to cover the cost of prematurely ending my second contract.
MOD EDIT AT&T.
I still love Samsung though. And have no plans to leave Samsung phones as long as they continue to give us removeable battery covers and MicroSD card slots.
Read and make a decision on your own. No one can decide it for you...the end!
Consider the Thread closed.
To the OP the reply to search and read is the best reply. The #1 rule on XDA is search. Your remark to the individual suggesting to search and read is unwarranted.
Also questions go in the Q&A section not in General. Please read the XDA rules here and familiarize yourself with them.
To all others profanity is not permitted on XDA in any style or form. Masked profanity is profanity. Also abusive name calling is not tolerated.
Thank you for your future attention to this.

Have a nice day.
I've only had my S6 for a couple weeks so mine was already updated to the latest OTA version by the time I got it, and so I can't use pingpong. I don't mean to be redundant and post this question if it has already been asked but I can't find any other info at the moment in this forum, but does anybody know if anything is in the works for the current version that it would be worth holding off on the upcoming 5.1 OTA? Or is the root that you first wave guys got to use probably a one-time thing for this phone? Coming from an HTC one where I was able to unlock my bootloader I am starting to miss having root...
If a new Root is available, you will SEE it all over the forums... no need to ask.

Yeah don't bother reading the question before posting a dumb pretentious answer to it. I asked if one was being WORKED ON that was worth holding off on the OTA for, not if one was available now.
I agree.. Lots of jerks in these forums.. I check regularly to see if a root method is available BUT ALSO to see the progress if any.. Simple yes or no or say nothing .. No need to be an ass.

I'm not sure if a root method is being worked on for the current update but I can tell you that the exploit for pingpong has been patched so that is a one time thing. I think our best bet for the next method will be when 5.1 comes out.

No, everyone has given up all hope and quit.
Seriously, what kind of answer to you think you would get?
The people working on it are rarely going to talk about it until they actually have a solution unless they are working with other developers trying out possible solutions. None of it is going to be public until they have a solution to prevent the MFG or vendors from plugging up a new hole they found before they can use it.
Asking if it is being worked on is just plain dumb. This is the same cycle of every new device that has ever been released with the same questions asked all over again.
What really is the point in asking? IF and when it becomes available it will be big news splashed all over the forums not just here but other places.
Constant asking about it is actually a violation of the forum.

I just got my Note 5 this afternoon, not a single one of my credit or debit cards will work with Samsung Pay and since I am with USAA it may be a while before it does, as such the itch to root is even stronger now.
Has the latest OTA been rooted yet? I am currently still on 5.1.1 but I am getting the notification for an update.
Would it be wise to update or should I wait a bit longer?
In other words has unlock and root been achieved on the newest OTA yet?

I didn't ask if it could be rooted.
I asked if MM had been rooted or if it was only LP at this time, as all I see in the development forum are 5.1.1 roms and kernels.
This is why I asked the question the way I did.
There is a very good reason that XDA has the reputation of being a bad place to go if you have questions, and your response is part of that problem.
The Q&A forum is for precisely these style questions.
Now, seeing as how I did not ask how to root the device as there are plenty of threads on that, would you care to take a stab at answering my actual question.
I won't be mad at a link to a thread which answers the question I asked.
Just do this

Looks like this when done right
And again, note that the link and the screenshot is for LP, I am asking if MM has been rooted yet.
Though I do very much appreciate the response.

Its all good. I won't go there with this one. The back and forth isn't worth it. You should also probably edit your post!
MM Beta is rootable. Go to the development section to find out the pros and cons of using the beta. I advise you to stay on LP. There's only the stock rooted beta kernel available for MM. There's a lot of cons to being on it, so please keep that in mind is you decide to flash it.
See how much help I still gave you without actually posting a link? Not trying to be a **** but if we soon feed the work, the work wouldn't know how to feed itself. I started off as the wise noob ever, and bricked phones. If I had only taken the time to Google and research, those devices being bricked could have been avoided.

Jammol,
I realise in my first post I did not give names as I had thought I had. This is why upon re-reading it I apologized as my original question wasn't clear.
Thank you for the follow up.
In any question thread the answer should be clear, even if it is simply a link to another post, in this way those coming here in the future can follow the link rather than seeing a simple "nevermind I figured it out" and my post being the only response to their search. Please note, I did not say you had to provide a link, just said that even if your answer was simply a link to where I could find the answer that would be fine as well.
Note I did search, but as I was looking for MM ROMS I could not find anything, I was under the mistaken impression that MM was on the device. This is where I erred and why I could not find anymore information.
For all future folks taking a look at this thread, as of today MM is not available on the Note5 and the newest OTA (as of today) has already been rooted and you can find a number of ROMS in the development section.

Jammol,
I realise in my first post I did not give names as I had thought I had. This is why upon re-reading it I apologized as my original question wasn't clear.
Thank you for the follow up.

Damn, you came off as really stabdoffish and a bit entitled, like everyone here owes you their time searching for a subject you could easily have searched for yourself. Smh

Honest question for you.
After reading the thread, seeing where I had apologized and seeing that the issues was solved and the back and forth was done, what compelled you to respond in such a negative manner?
You end your statement with "smh" which I can only assume stands for "so much hate" as it is currently used.
So why bother? You see the thread is resolved, you see the question has been answered but then you just felt this need to respond?

Smh means shaking my head. And it doesn't matter if it was resolved, you got all upset that none of us took the time to GOOGLE or FORUM SEARCH for you, when you could have easily done that yourself. The sense of entitlement was pretty thick.
And again, if you had actually bothered to read I state that I did search but was under the mistaken impression that this phone had an update to MM when it had not, hence the reason I could not find anything when searching for MM ROM's, this is why I asked.
So your assertion, especially after I had already stated I did, that I didn't search is completely unfounded.
The issue I took was with a response that boiled down to "do your own research as this help forum isn't here to help you".
This is an issue at XDA and why XDA is universally made fun of and considered a bad place to go if you have questions that haven't been answered, because a bunch of folks will respond with vitriol without bothering to read the rest of the posts.
For instance, the best answer was already given, but it would have hurt nothing for Jamool to have said:
"The latest OTA update is currently LP and that has been rooted, you can find multiple roms in the development section of the forum, here is a link (link). And in the future make sure to make use of that search button."
At which point I would have realised that I was mistaken on the idea that the Note5 has Marshmallow already and that would have been the end of the conversation.
Now, can we consider this matter closed otr would you like to once again respond and tell me how I didn't bother to search?
P.S. I cannot be the only one that has noticed that the search function seems to stop working at 11pm EST am I?

I just got my Note 5 this afternoon, not a single one of my credit or debit cards will work with Samsung Pay and since I am with USAA it may be a while before it does, as such the itch to root is even stronger now.
Has the latest OTA been rooted yet? I am currently still on 5.1.1 but I am getting the notification for an update.
Would it be wise to update or should I wait a bit longer?
In other words has unlock and root been achieved on the newest OTA yet?

Where you on N920TUVS2COKC when you got it? If so how did you root it. I got mines today & dont see any updates available. Also the space kernel has been pulled.
............ junk . deleted
I did google, and as I said already. I was wrong.
I guess you really don't bother to read previous posts.
How dare I post a question in a question and answer forum specific to my question.

I haven't rooted yet, I am holding out hope that usaa gets Samsung pay setup soon.
I was having a bad day , then I read this.

Anyone thinking they'll try it when it's all complete?
Why are you posting this clickbait article here? Those are generic instructions for every phone out there.

Actually, they're not. I didn't post a clickbait article at all. I posted one that I was looking around the web for and found this. I'm sorry if you feel it's clickbait, I don't think it is. Matter of fact, there are parts of it still to be updated once the device IS released. Maybe reading it would help rather than just dismissing it out of hand.
I don't mean to burst your bubble but I think you are wrong, it is clickbait - there is no recovery - no idea if one will even be avaialble at this time. Bootloader unlocked is a complete unknown right now - so the web site you linked to and many others I have seen everytime a new phone is released (yes they did this for the S7 Edge (us and international varients too) long before the phone had even shipped - I don't know if the people responsible for this web site did the S7 Edge site that was nearly identicle to this one or not - but they are selling ads and looking for click thrus using rooting the S8 as the attraction - and frankly, while the instructions are fine (minus the important links for TWRP) - they are the exact same instructions any samsung phone would have - nothing new here at all.

Thats exactly what makes it clickbait, its unfinished with no files, i could of posted the same thing. Besides root articles come from xda first not some no name mytechvirus website.
article seems to be clickbait dude, literally ctrl+F ctrl+C CTRL +V to make it seem for S8+. so far I have heard that the snapdragon S8+, all US models, have a locked bootloader, can't say about the exonys model.
I've messaged the moderators to remove the thread. Apologies.
Boy Howdy these Xda members know whats up.
