[Q] Avast recent problems + Wifi reconnecting - HTC One S

Hello everyone,
Due to the recent problem with Avast Antivirus for Android, I've seen many problems on my phone.
First, to let everyone know, here's what happened with Avast : http://www.stayprotected.com/2014/01/false-positive-avast-mobile-security/
So, false positive about every app on the phone.
Indeed I was surprised, I uninstalled 2-3 things, but here's the thing. Is it normal that everytime I turn OFF the Wifi, it keeps turning ON by itself ?
In the list of viruses found, there is GinMaster, which sends personnal data. In order to send, you need wifi, which tells me that maybe Avast may not be wrong. Seriously, how does my wifi keeps turning on by itself ?
I backed up my phone yesterday, and restored a previous version (about mid-December). The thing is, if my problem does not come from Avast, then there is also an SmsSend virus or I don't know what, and that GinMaster on my phone.
First, do you have any idea what would cause the wifi to turn on automatically every time ? I'd really like to get back to my yesterday backup, but if it really sends data, I'd prefer not. Plus if I turn on wifi, it could really send data while I'm trying to update Avast.
Also, when I open avast, it keeps force closing, due to all the "viruses" detected.
Sooo, what do you think about it ? Do you have any solution ?
Thank you all !
EDIT : Well, as I was discouraged to obtain any good solution except than reseting the phone (most successful way, I think), I tried the impossible. I restored the last back up, checked if Wifi still connects by itself. So, first it wouldn't, so that's a good point. I turned it on, and updated Avast, which scanned again all the files. Seems like all the "viruses" are gone, so that's another good news.
Still, it weirds me out that after many reboots, the wifi would turn on by itself (even if it doesn't now). Anyway, auto-solution
Thank you readers !

[Q] How can I fix a G2 stuck in "Upload Mode"?

I have a non-rooted, stock G2 (on T-Mobile) running Android 2.2.
Every day, as many as twenty or thirty times per day, the phone gets stuck in "upload" mode. The data icon shows that data is uploading (or trying to) and I am unable to use any data-related services (whether tethered or on the phone itself). When it happens it can last anywhere from 10 seconds to 5 minutes. The only way I can forcibly stop it is to completely shut down the radio by toggling airplane mode off then on, forcing the phone to reacquire a data signal.
I've tried resetting the phone to factory defaults, deleting every app, reinserting the SIM card, and even formatting the SD card. Stopping running processes doesn't affect the issue, nor does implementing a task killer to kill extant apps. I also don't have any reliable way of tracking how much data *might* be getting sent (where ever it might be going). I've toggled off background data, syncing, GPS, network location, etc. Anything user settable that could potentially impact data has been switched off, to no avail. But, even with those settings on, I've never (in the past) had them completely usurp my data usage by locking the mobile data into an upload state.
My three main concerns are that 1) I can't reliably download apps, check mail, send pics/videos, or other data-related processes. 2) I'm concerned that if something IS uploading, it may be uploading a LOT and adding to my 5GB per month throttle-cap on T-Mobile. 3) I don't know WHAT is being sent, or WHERE. For all I know it could be sending my private data and contact info to an unknown third party.
I've ended every endable process and killed or uninstalled every app possible. I can't seem to remove bloatware without rooting, which I'm not yet eager to do as this phone is less than 60 days old, and I'm otherwise very happy with it as is.
Any suggestions or recent information as to why this is occurring? I have seen a similar thread for a different phone (Incredible), but it was from over a year ago and there were no solutions (other than flashing a new ROM). I'd like to stay stock, at least for a while, but if there is no other option and the Gingerbread OTA doesn't resolve this issue, then I may very well go to CyanogenMod (which I was happily running on my previous phone, the G1).

[Q] Dictionary Provider constantly updating

This is a tricky one for me to explain, considering I hadn't noticed the problem until last week. I've never monitored my data usage over wifi with the built in ICS data monitor, however, when I did a clean install on Friday I thought I'd activate it.
Just for reference, I've checked this on a number of ROMs, including stock 4.0.3 and 4.0.4.
My problem is this, I let the phone update etc and the following day I noticed that "Dictionary Provider" had downloaded 400mb worth of something. I tried different ROMs, clearing all of the relevant apps' data and caches, rebooting, etc. Nothing seemed to work, except to take Adamg's keyboard included in Oxygen and push that to system/app.
That way I don't have to download the dictionaries, which I never use either. I have noticed that since I did that my battery life has gone up by at least an hour's worth of screen on time. The "DP" doesn't keep the phone awake, so no excessive drain, but it's constantly downloading whenever the screen is on.
When I go to "Language and Inputs" and select "Available Dictionaries" (I think that's what the option is, I don't have it installed anymore) it would just display that there are no available dictionaries, and the displayed text would flash, as if it's trying to refresh.
Anyone else seen this? Or did I inadvertently bork my phone?
Hi mods,
Figured out the problem was with my ISP. Ugh, please close/delete this thread.
Cheers

[Q] Antivirus s/w detected malware in my settings

Hi Everyone,
OK, I am completely new to using tablets and android (and XDA! ) but I recently bought an Android tablet and although I put AV s/w on it I seem to have caught a bug. The problem is that, apparently, my settings app is now malware and it seems the only option to resolve it is to uninstall my settings application. Understandably I don;t want to forge ahead and do this because then I cannot manage my device. Anyone got any suggestions or can point me somewhere that could help? I have trawled the internet for an answer but haven't found anywhere reporting the same thing, so far. I am flummoxed and getting very frustrated. Also, any recommendations for malware prevention apps? Ta.
Thanks for taking time to read this. Sorry if it's in the wrong place!
You do know you should provide more details like which phone, which firmware, what antivirus app, etc.
But the simplest answer you would get is to stop using antivirus apps. Because most of them are hoaxes or give false results. There is nothing wrong with your settings app. I suggest you uninstall the AV app first.

It's not a phone, it's just a no-mark tablet (Tabtronics, if that makes any difference).
Seeing as the last several days (maybe a week now) it has had serious performance issues -- crashing, rebooting itself without my initiating it, not turning on for long periods, notification messeges telling me apps don't work when I have never tried to use them -- I'd say this is not a false result. And the AV (Avast) is the same brand I've been using on my desktop for years and has always been fiine, and I've had no problems with it until the last week.
Seems odd that the assumption here is that there isn't a problem, when there are a shed load of articles online stating how vulnerable Android is to malware. Unfortunately I can't find any that tell you where to go/ what to do in order to get rid of the bug. :crying:
Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Here's a good discussion that might interest you:

As for the issues you have, I would attribute it to either a rogue app or low memory. Try uninstalling any apps you recently installed. Also, try clearing app caches, freeing memory etc. See if that helps.

Why is Google stalking me?

Since upgrading to lollipop I'd noticed a couple of small niggles with me Galaxy S5. As I've not had to rebuild my phone since purchasing it, I decided a factory reset wouldn't do any harm. Since resetting, Google play services keeps waking my GPS and searching for my location, this happens every few minutes unless I turn the GPS off. I've got all the usual Google stalking features turned off (Google now, location history, location reporting) but I've still got the same issue. I've even reset again and unticked the box to restore my user data... But still Google want to know where I am.
Any ideas how to resolve this one? It's a pain if I have to keep turning my GPS off when I'm not using it, especially when I had no issue prior to factory resetting.

It's more likely one or several of the myriad of apps/services on your phone. Do you have a weather app on your phone? Well, how's it going to know how the weather is, if it doesn't know where you are? Facebook by default wants to know where you are so when you post or send a message, it tells everybody where you are. Even apps like music streamers want to know where you are so they can tell you where you were when you heard something. Lots of apps that you wouldn't expect to use GPS in fact do. The vast majority of this data collection is completely innocuous and harmless, but you always have the option to disallow it. Or not use the app(s) as well; remember, it was you that granted the app GPS permissions when you installed it.

Thanks for your suggestion, I don't think it is another app though. Prior to resetting my phone the 2nd and 3rd time I uninstalled any suspect apps one by one to see which one was the culprit. In the end I just went through the entire apps list and uninstalled/disabled everything I could, it made the phone really unstable and practically unusable but still didn't stop Google Play Services using my GPS every few minutes.
Any other ideas?

Try this:

how about "Android Device Manager " .. is that disabled?
There are a lot of guides about how to fix this. It isn't always the same service that is an issue...but you can try and disable some of the ones that are known to be problematic. For example see post #3 in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785128

Updates stuck at 100%, Gmail does not notify, and other issues.

I am desperate, I can't find the issue here. I have a S10 (Xfinity unlocked on Verizon) , I can't seem to update apps, they get stuck at 100% or 99%, AND some things like Gmail and Instagram do not seem to notify that I am getting messages.
Here's the kicker, I factory reset the phone some 5 times now, and still have the issue. The Reset fixes it for a few days (if even a day) and then the issue starts up again!
the phone was just upgraded to 10, but it was happening on 9 also!
no clue what the problem is ! it kills me! Please anyone have any idea? I even had an authorized Samsung dealer do a "software refresh" and then wiped out the phone again, and I'm still having the same issue..
HELP! please.
thank you

Boot into safe mode, it will only load your system apps and not your user apps. Then try to update your apps, if it works then you know the issue is being cause one of your user apps. Then you just need to identify which user app is the offending app.
It also might be caused by a conflict between various settings or maybe you have some things disabled or turned off that are causing this.

That kinda works.. but again, as said, I have reloaded the phone over and over, and it works fine, until a few days later and stars over.. And updating is not the only problem, Geolocating is slow, sluggish or not working sometimes, Push updates of emails are slower or not happening. just weird things..
I am not sure what it could be! its like the phone is the problem!

Ok, everything I posted went completely over your head, I'll try again.
If it is working like it is supposed to while in safe mode(which is only loaded with system apps and system settings and not any of your user apps or data) that tells you that the issue is caused by some user app that you have installed or something in your user settings. In other other words, it is very likely something that you, as the user, have installed or setup/selected, it is probably not the device. It keeps happening after resetting because you are not changing what you are doing that it is causing it, it is something that you keep returning to after resetting the device. You just need to figure out which user app is causing the issue or whatever settings are causing the issue.
The way to do that will be trial and error. Uninstall one of the apps that you have installed, then use the device for a few hours, if the issue continues, that wasn't the app causing the issue, reinstall that app then choose another user app to uninstall and then use the device for a few hours, if the issue continues, that is t the app, reinstall that app, and so on and so on, etc... Get the picture? When you uninstall an app and the issue stops, the last app uninstalled is probably the app causing the issue.
I suggest resetting the device again. Then, only install one of your usual apps but don't install any others and don't change any settings, use the device a while, if the issue does not occur, install another one of your usual apps but don't install any others, basically, install one app at a time until the issue occurs, when it does, the last app installed is probably the offending app.
Or, if you don't find it that way and you get all of your usual apps installed without triggering the issue during the trial and error process, then you need to go through settings by trial and error. Changing one setting at a time and using the device a while to see if the issue occurs, if it does, it probably has something to do with the last setting that you changed before the issue occured.
Slowly changing one thing at a time over an extended amount with time between each change, will allow you to isolate exactly which app or setting is causing the issue.
Or maybe you need to flash your stock firmware via PC tools to start over with a clean installation.
