[Q] Should I give my receipt when selling? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Here is the deal, I'm trading my N5 for someone's LG G2, and they are asking for my google play receipt. Should I give it to them or not for fear of leaking credit card information and what not.

Can someone really find out your credit card number by looking at a Google Play receipt?

I'm not too sure, but it does give away address, email, and all sorts of other information.

I guess you could redact the personal info.

1. Who is it?
If it's some stranger on the Internet, be wary. If it's a friend of a friend, I'd still be wary. If it's a friend/family member, you're probably ok.
2. Is he offering to give you his receipt?
If not, sounds sketchy. Straight up tell him that if he isn't giving his, you're keeping yours. If he is, well, insist that you aren't comfortable with that.
3. Is it really worth it?
Why not sell your N5 on Swappa, then buy a G2 on the same site? It's a hassle, but so is losing a grand before realizing that some random dude got into your bank account and getting a chance to stop him.
Of course, it's your call. The above are just what I would look at it. If it's a stranger, I'd say no to giving the receipt and if he won't sell it to me otherwise, I'd find other means to sell it. Maybe I'm too paranoid, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Me to the shop again
Hi,
I'm wondering if you have noted my message that i would like to continue with the purchase of the Touch Pro EU version as noted below. Now I find myself missing the payment information, which I am waiting from you to send me. The first contact from you was extremely fasy, which I'm thankful for, but approximately how long it can take to tell me how to pay?
The thing that you don't have option to pay via Credit card is already quite annoying, but even more annoying is to wait for the bank transfer payment information. Nothing personal, I'm just used to that shops would be more eager to get the money from the customers.
Sincerely yours,

I'm glad i never got those payment instructions. who knows where my money could be right now!
And also remember, when ordering from them, you will probably have to pay the toll and VAT at your home country, so it really isn't even that cheap.
OMG
What a clueless webshop contact.
I think you should inform the owner of the shop so you can get this guy fired!
thanks for sharing
Amazing.......
You should copy the web-link from here and send them an email with the details of this post..... not good at all? and "who" pays "bank to bank" only these days - very strange indeed?

I thought to do so, but after doing whois pings on the domain, found out that the website is registered to a person with a same surname than the person answering my e-mail. Family biz.. They can go to hell with their stupid shop, just ordered from expansys.
Sounds very dodgie.... Thanks for sharing....
I bought from highstreet "Kamla" in London on Tottenham Court Road... UK version for £499.
A bit more expensive but from my past experience with HTC P3600 which was quite unstable initially, I thought it's better to buy from a shop where I can go back to if anything goes wrong.
I tell you...that is nuts. I had an issue with the first Touch Pro I ordered. Thank goodness I did it on E-Bay. Paypal refunded my money after my dispute, found another seller, and bought two of them with next day air delivery. Though I had one seller try to mess around with me, money was safe, and still had my Touch Pro within a week of the UK's launch.
Good luck with your next seller.
if it wasn't blindingly obvious to you already:
DON'T PAY BY BANK TRANSFER OR WESTERN UNION.
A merchant who doesn't take cards is generally always a scammer; bank transfers/WU are irreversible, this is precisely why they're required by scammers.
If you want to buy a device, buy it on a card; the price is cheaper than average for a good reason, use your noodle.

Got Some Info this app is a scam
So it's a pyramid scheme, then? What does it do other than pay you to refer people (if it even does that)?

DON'T USE THIS!!! They already had this thing going on a few months ago.
When i say don't use it, i mean get that damn 5 dollars and another 5 for referring someone and get the hell out, because after that they require your credit card to give you the money. Which i, being stupid enough, trusted and did it and then fell into the credit card fraud. Got a call from my bank saying a bunch of transactions were being used in a state i didn't go to, cancelled it and nothing was lost.
I used it for about 10 bucks, and then after i had more money on clover, they require credit card, so then the scam starts.
If you don't believe me, go ahead you can do it, tell me how it goes. If you research this app "CLOVER" and the company behind it, you'll find it's not just me who got this credit card fraud.

Bought phone from Gazelle on eBay, it was unwiped!

I just bought a phone on eBay that was unwiped and had the previous owners photos, phone numbers, and gmail still on it. I have contacted Gazelle and await their reply. It should be interesting. Is there some other authority I should contact about this?
Just a reminder, if you are giving/trading/selling your phone... WIPE IT!
What is "Gazelle" and why do you contact any "authorities" about a phone of a lazy dude?

If I am working for a bank and buy their old servers with the promise of data destruction and do not do that before reselling it wouldn't that be criminal? The Gazelle company (huge online reseller) promises that. I guess it is up to the previous owner though so I have contacted them with the info.

Might be, but it probably slipped through. If I were you, I'd contact the previous owner of the phone and told him - he might get much more out of that situation (not guiding anyone to sue any big company here). Please don't blackmail the previous owner of that device with the data you have from him. He might even be so nice and reward your for being so open to tell him what you discovered. Let's hope he's a good guy. Good luck!

isn't it the responsibility of the first owner to wipe the phone before selling it to ebay?
Just inform the prevoius owner and see if that data is of some worth to him. If not, wipe it yourself and use the fone.
SIMPLE...
Sent from my GT-I9300.
I bought a phone once and got home to find it was loaded not only with the prev owners info, contacts and accounts...but page upon page of text messages and emails arranging drug deals. Not huge stuff...but there were names, addresses, , the whole lot. Months worth.
I can't understand how the guy selling it never thought he should maybe wipe that?

no talking about IMEI changing period.

The Unlock Pros = The Scam Pros
They've done the same thing to me. They got me to send my $900 phone in for IMEI repair after they've screwed it up remotely. They use a UPS Store mailbox as shipping address.
Once they got the phone they started ignoring my emails and phone calls. When I finally got someone with the username "Scott" one their website live chat, he was rude first and later mocked me, called me stupid, dumb and all the f words for asking about my phone.
Never do business with these guys. They are thieves and they continue to steal phones because they assume people won't waste their time and money to sue them for stealing their cell phones. At least that's what the Scott guy told me after insulting me online. Also they think or assume your phone is stolen so you won't do anything if they steal from you.
They do provide the remote unlock and IMEI repair but this is just their way to make their business look legitimate. In reality the look for opportunities to have you ship your phone in. For example they will intentionally screw up the phone then as you to ship it in.
By the way, they will show you a mail label to make you think that they'll ship your phone back to you soon. This is just a trick, Kiss your phone goodbye if you've made the mistake like me to ship your phone to these scammer.
Just so you know(no offense) but to unblacklist means to hack into the phones database. And I feel really sorry for you. Hope you get your money back.

Update:
Exactly like this scumbag told me, Paypal will not refund intangible goods. This pos "merchant ' had bragged to me about that & told me I'd never get my money back.
Paypal did refuse, at first... but they changed their minds after I sent 'em the tape of the guy they gave my money too threatening me and my kids.... (Thank goodness fro rooted phones!) I may have also mentioned that I would report them (paypal) to the Office of the Inspector General for aiding in interstate criminal this and that, extortion, etc etc.
The next day, I got an email saying Paypal had refunded my money from Paypal funds.
They did not take my money back from the Unlock Pros AFIK. The Unlock Pros is one scumbag ripoff artist using Paypal to do it.

But on THIS site we do not discuss anything to do with IMEI changing for any reason, this includes services or hack methods.

You've been had, it seems they sold you a device that has been blacklisted due to non payment on their bill.
The only way to activate this phone is for the former owners bill to be paid, then they will remove the block.
Otherwise, sell it, but make it known to any buyers that it does not have a valid IMEI/blacklisted.
Don't cheat someone the way you were cheated, cut your losses and consider it a lesson learned, then be smarter the next time you buy a used device. Remember, when you find a deal that's too good to be true, it usually is.
If you buy from ebay, only buy devices that say they have a good/valid IMEI and only from sellers with a very high rating.
The safest option for buying used devices is to use Swappa.com.

Not sure if you got my earlier reply I just want to thank you for taking the time to answer my question.. Verizon totally left me in the dark basically. It's weird that Verizon won't let me pay a balance if there is one left won't lmk anything. Especially seems how I'm on a sister network and ultimately I'd be bringing them money in not even bring the phone in. Lol anyways I appreciate it again may try and sell it no worries won't do unto others what was done onto me feels kinda crappy.. ttyl

They won't discuss or handle anything specific about an account with anyone but the authorities or the owner of the account, for security and privacy reasons, they are bound by law on this.
On a side note, if you bought the device from eBay then eBay might reimburse your purchase because what you received was not what was listed, you didn't get what you paid for. It wasn't listed as invalid IMEI, it was posted and sold as if it was all legit when it wasn't. eBay might handle this for you, it's worth a shot, at least.
