I've been with Verizon before there were smartphones when they came out jumped on and got one, I always had unlimited Data on my phone and my wives, last year when I upgraded I was told I couldn't get the unlimited plan but reading on this and many forums people are still getting unlimited plans, I just don't understand how some are still getting unlimited data, I even called Verizon customer service they told me they no longer offer unlimited data

There are some loopholes, but once you give away unlimited data there is no way to get it back.
A Verizon rep is supposed to tell you that it's no longer available. They also aren't going to tell you the loopholes.

Buying the phone outright is a way to keep an unlimited data plan, not get one. If you were on an unlimited data plan, you could keep it by buying a phone for full retail price through Verizon or buy a phone from somewhere other than Verizon then activate it on your account.

Well, I just upgraded again last July and as long as i didn't change my plan, I could keep unlimited data.
Keep unlimited
The way I kept my unlimited data plan was by getting my wife a smartphone, using her upgrade for my phone, and getting her a new plan. She had a dumb phone, so when we went to get us both upgrades, her 2 year upgrade was used to get my S3, it was transferred to my account, and her account was setup with the standard 2GB plan. It was a bit of work for the rep, but he was really awesome and did it for us.
From what I heard, this can also work if you add another line to account.

Sorry for not being clearer! Sometimes what's in the head doesn't come out the fingers when typing.
I have bought my last 4-5 phones on eBay. Best way I know to KEEP the plan I have.......so far. I'm sure one day, VZW will just say "no mas" and completely rid themselves of the unlimited plan. FWIW I have never gone over 3GB a month but it's more the principle of the thing.

I've done some looking around, and I found the Captivate at Newegg.com for $79.99 with a renewal of contract, BEWARE!!!!!
I didn't get the warm and fuzzies from Newegg, so I stopped the process with them and called AT&T. Here's what I found:
My existing plan affords me the unlimited Data, without the new data plan restrictions.
When you buy from one of these Authorized AT&T Dealers, they effectively cancel your existing contract, and start a new contract with their name, and that is how they get paid(from AT&T). The Up side is you can get a Captivate for $79.99, the down side is if you have a "true" unlimited data package, you will loose it, and get the data plan with the cap.
That's not completely true..
If you mean "authorized dealers" such as LetsTalk or wirefly .. they let you keep your old unlimited 30$ data plan.. I'm a little surprise newegg wouldn't let you do that.. try calling newegg and argue it back.
Best Buy was able to do this for me as well, selling at the 99.99 price and giving me the unlimited data after a call to AT&T.

I dont know about LetsTalk or Wirefly, but Newegg said I would keep my data plan, and appearance wise, it would all remain the same, but it was the AT&T Rep that said the plan would technically change, I would be changing the plan and I would loose the current true unlimited data plan, and would be under the new unlimited data plan that actually has a limit. That's why, they could only offer me the cheaper phone IF my plan was still offered by AT&T.

I don't know about the contract changes and stuff but, I got mine for $9.99 off Wirefly with a new 2 year contract. Needed 3 lines, now I have 3 lines..lol
Mnay "authorized dealers" treat a new contract different then an upgrade. Some of these deals ONLY apply to new contracts and it is up to the retailer to decide. New Contracts should not get Unlimited Data - even AT&T store managers get in trouble for doing this. Upgrades to hardware on current contracts do allow you to keep the unlimited data plan if you have it already.
There is nothing magic here, but if you are not sure, you should ask.
I was able to keep my unlimited plan when ordered from letstalk.

I also just ordered my Captivate from Amazon for 1 penny (new contract, 4 lines). Quick off topic question, how is the call quality?
I just purchased from WireFly and was able to my unlimited data package no problem. What's odd here is NewEgg uses the same company called Simplexity, that being said there should be NO issues with keeping your current unlimited data plan.

I went thru letstalk and they set me up on the limited..I called at&t adn told em I didn't want the plan and I wanted my old one that was grandfathered in. They said ok but not again. I bricked my phone and sent it back to lettalk and they sent mea phone back and changed the data plan on me again...I had to call at&t but they set me back to unlimited data for $30. I thought they were going to allow folks to keep the unlimited forever so long that they stayed with at&t

A buddy of mine has an iPhone 3g and will be upgrading to a Captivate. He called and made sure about his data. If your already on the unlimited, then you get to keep the unlimited. But if you drop it from unlimited..you don't get it back.
Don't let your family members upgrade their devices Even though we were grandfathered in by pre-ordering, it only takes one bad apple to ruin it for everyone!
I asked a CSR and was told that upgrading one device on the family plan kicks ALL phones with unlimited into the new ****ty plans. :/
False information- see http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/faqs/Calling Plans/share_everything.html
Thanks for the heads up. I had been wondering about that too. The Csr I spoke with once said that's not the case but she sounded really unsure I could hardly trust her

This is untrue. You only lose your unlimited data if the plan is changed to Share Everything. You can still upgrade phones, you just have make sure you keep your current plan.
I was told 2 days ago when i upgraded to the s3 that if you use your 2 year upgrade on your line you'll lose unlimited. But if you use another lines upgrade then switch the phone to your line youll keep unlimited.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Family plans operate as one plan with just individual lines. If you upgrade one of the lines it affects the whole plan. This is pretty obvious by when you go to the Verizon website and look under Plans you only see two options now: Share Everything and Prepaid. You can try working with a CSR to see if they will get you a deal but chances are if you buy a phone at a 2-year price they will require you to change your plan. In the past when I've gotten a new phone if the plan I was on was no longer available they would inform me that I would need to change to a more current plan.
One option to try is to ask if there are any customer loyalty plans. Verizon has plans they don't advertise for customers looking to keep a low bill but remain with Verizon. Example: $25/month for 100 minutes with no nights & weekends or in-network calling versus the $40 for the base minute plan. There is a family share plan that is only 450 minutes shared, instead of the 700 on the base plan, and priced at 49.99 instead of 59.99. HOWEVER these were prior to share everything so I have no idea if they even still exist post Share Everything. If you've been a customer for a few years it's worth asking.
I did speak with a CSR who told me that if you have any discounts on your current plan they will now come off the top of the total bill. So instead of it being 15% off the base line it will now be 15% off $100 (40+60).

Anyone that tells you that is full of it. Upgrading a line does NOT impact the others on the plan. Even if a line has a dumbphone, they can upgrade to a smartphone and still choose from the 2, 5 or 10GB line based tiered data plans without messing with the others.

Exactly...i was also told that in december when my line is elidgeable for a upgrade i can use it on my wifes line and buy a seperate data plan. The forums are almost as bad as the media....**** gets blown way out of proportion.
Just going to go ahead and post these and the end all be all. The first picture shows the main line(mine), notice the old share plan and unlimited data. Second picture shows the line I used to upgrade, notice the end date. Now, the rep at the store most definitely tried to push me onto a Share Everything(telling me the benefits, etc.), but with a couple stern "No, thank you"s, he dropped it.
Good to know. Based on the info they released they made it seem like you had to change if you were upgrading a phone but I guess that must be limited to non-family plans. I wonder if I can get them to give me an upgrade now instead of december

This is exactly opposite of the way things work.
If there was a plan change requirement, the rep would be forced to implement it via the computer system, as it would explicitly disallow (if it even showed it) the use of an ineligible plan.
The idea that a rep missed the meeting saying "Everyone who upgrades anything goes on shared data and takes the entire plan with them!" and simply didn't enter it into the system at the time of purchase is simply laughable.

I take it back. That's what you get for listening to CSR's. I'm glad to see verizon takes pride with training the people who represent them.
I signed up with verizon two years ago with HTC thunderbolt with a 4G Unlimited data plan. After that I have been just buying secondhand phones. Now I am up for an upgrade, but I know if you upgrade through verizon they will strip you of your unlimited plan. But I also heard that they are doing this to customers who have 3G smartphones, in order to get everyone to 4G. But if you have been grandfathered into a 4G unlimited plan, can you upgrade and still keep your unlimited plan.
I am not able to get a correct answer from anyone. Has anyone recently, who has 4G unlimited plan been able to upgrade and keep their plan.
Thank you in advance.

As of right now, Verizon is making everyone go to a share everything or tiered data plan. Those of us who are grandfathered in will have to switch to one those plans. But here's the kicker. This is only if we want to take advantage of subsidized phone options. For those of us who want to continue to have unlimited data will have to pay for our phones outright. So either we can enjoy phones at a cheaper pace (at least until VZW gets rid of subsidized phone options) or we can pay the 4-700 dollars for a new phone and keep our unlimited plan.
I'm keeping my plan on principle.

looks like no upgrading for me , just keep buying second hand phones.
I upgraded from an Incredible2 3g phone to the GN2 keeping my unlimited data by adding the new phone to one of my 2 "dumb phone" lines, then moved the GN2 to my line. The Verizon store Rep offered to do this for me knowing that it is a loophole to keep your unlimited data. I'm sure eventually that loophole will be closed, by I can speak from personal experience that it works. Several others have done the same thing. Hope this helps.

I upgraded and kept my unlimited data as well, there's three lines on my account and as long as I always transfer the upgrade to the line that doesn't have data, then after the upgrade switching phones with that line I still keep my unlimited. So in summary as long as you have a line without data in your account you can keep unlimited by doing an alternative upgrade.
Pro-tip:
Ask for an "A-List" device at the Verizon store. A-list devices are devices returned within the first 14 days they allow exchange. Mine was from someone who could not handle the power of Android and had to dumb it down to iOS, saved me a couple hundred bucks to let them borrow it and I still got a warranty
I payed $640 out the door (Accessories+Tax) months ago for my S3. 16GB White, Car Charger, Screen Protector 3pk, UAG case, new SIM (Do not pay for sim or activation corporate stores do it free, private will too if you mention this).
Upgraded my S3 today to a S4 and I was still able to keep my Unlimited Data, thanks to the clever workings of the rep at Costco.
Since I still have a regular line on my account, he was able to do some switching around with the lines and keep my data plan intact
According to him Costco does what they can do to keep the customer happy.
BestBuy and Verizon could not do anything for me.

Just curious, did you have more than one line to begin with, and were you still in contract (if so, how long was left)? When upgrading time comes around I don't want to lose my unlimited either.
That makes sense... Costco is a retailer, so if they want to sell you the device @ a discounted price, they can... and from the sounds of things, WILL. Costco will do anything for members and this sounds like a rad deal!
You'll never get that kind of deal from VZ directly. I have unlimited too and bought my S3 of ebay to avoid losing my data.
Shhhh!!! And its very possible to do this directly through Verizon if you take the self service route.

So I have an none smart phone on my plan that is eligible for an upgrade. If I upgrade my phone with that to keep unlimited data do I have to keep the none smart phone on my data plan and pay the extra $9. Our can I take it off after I upgrade mine with it to keep unlimited.

If you renew your contract in any way shape or form you will lose your unlimited data.
An upgrade means you can sign a contract to get a phone subsidized. An upgrade is not a courtesy or a freebie, the word is misleading. An upgrade eligibility simply means Verizon or whatever carrier will let you sign a contract to get a phone on subsidy. Use it and the unlimited goes away.
The only way to maintain unlimited data is to not alter your contracted terms. If you sign a new contract it'll go bye bye.
The only ways to get a new phone without losing your unlimited data is to acquire a phone without putting your line with unlimited in contract. There are many ways to do this, none of which I spell out in detail.
If you search ebay you can purchase unlimited data for around $150-200 off people selling it.
It greatly depends on where you go. I recently found a great third party Verizon retailer with a system which still allows people to keep unlimited data. I believe it has to do with the insurance they go through. Corporate and Best Buy go through assurion which absolutely cannot in any shape or form allow you to keep unlimited data.
Other systems do have workarounds and some people are willing to oblige. Just recently I let my brother use my upgrade (my line is unlimited, his is tiered) but every location I asked said it was impossible for him to take my upgrade and let me keep my unlimited data. Well, here I am now still rocking unlimited data with a 2 year contract extension.
The third party location I found was great to us and even offered to help my mom keep unlimited data using a subsidized upgrade using a "musical phones" method.

The most basic way, of which I have personally used myself, is to have a basic phone attached to your [insert service provider here] service contract. Whenever you have an upgrade for your smartphone line, swap it to the basic phone, then upgrade through that "dumb" phone. Once you receive the new smartphone, activate it on your smartphone account, and reactivate the basic phone on its original line. Voila.
Edit: I am sure there are other methods which may be more effective (not have to pay for a secondary basic phone), however this one has worked for me (and others). Your call as to how you will proceed...
Don't forget the new $30 upgrade fee on Verizon.

Correct. I went into detail with a manager at a VZ store once and he told me you can change anything on your account, like minutes or text, which will not affect your unlimited data. Once you upgrade your phone and get that subsidized price, you lose the data and go on a new 'share everything' package.
You can, however, transfer an account/number to someone and they'll keep unlimited data... so if you have an extra line on your account with unlimited data, you can sign a release of liability over to that person and they will have the line/account exactly as it was on your account, because you're just moving the line from one owner to another. I did this in June with my ex.
Maybe that's what the people on eBay are doing... it's shifty and I'd try to avoid it, though.
This can also work through verizon.
Just talked to a clerk online and told her exactly what I wanted to do and she helped me through the whole process. All you need to do is switch your upgrade to another line with data, renew their contract by buying the phone, from there you can either chose pick up phone in-store or have them ship it to you. Once you get it just activate the phone on your line and your good to go.

I can attest to this. Just upgraded my wifes phone today. I have unlimited data and she does not. We went to the Verizon store and they kept the plan the same.
What we did was use the upgrade on another line and then just swap the sim cards when we got home and it worked fine.

This wouldn't really make sense to someone who doesn't already have a spare data line.. Regardless your still paying for 2 lines, if you cancel there is a hefty fee that goes with it.. If you don't already have a spare data line itd be a better idea just to buy a phone at retail price.. Wouldn't it?

4g phones do.
And we have separate lines because we're on a family plan.
Broke my S3, and would like to upgrade to the Moto X. Unfortunately, I have the unlimited data upgrade. Our family plan has 5 lines. 1 unlimited smart, 1 tiered smart, and 3 dumb phones. I've searched and heard NUMEROUS stories on how to keep unlimited data, and read comments from people about how none of those work. I figured the XDA folks may be a bit more knowledgeable than some other forums, so I'm trying my hand here. I've heard a few different ways to do it:
1. Transfer my upgrade through myverizon to a dumb line and then upgrade. (Verizon alone has given me about 4 different answers on if this would void my UDP)
2. Find a retailer that would work things around and keep my UDP. (Found a guy, verizonchris, on a different site that said he could do this for me most likely, but he needs my billing password. Naturally, Im reluctant to give it out)
3. Transfer upgrade on myverizon, go to a store and get a upgrade voucher for motomaker, then upgrade through motomaker and it will keep my UDP.
I've heard of some others, as I'm sure you guys have, and am really just looking for some sort of verification for this from some smart peeps!
(Sidenote, I'm also going to claim the S3 on Asurion. Does anyone know what Asurion is giving people for broken vzw S3's? Heard a few different things, maybe an upgrade through that would be possible?)
Thanks!

Thanks, trying to avoid that.
Sounds like you may be overthinking this, or something has changed that I'm not aware of.
You can't do anything with the upgrade available on your unlimited line. If you do, this will most likely reset your line to tiered data.
The upgrade would need to be on the dumb phone line.
You would upgrade that dumb phone's line to the phone you want.
When the phone comes, call up Verizon and activate the new phone on your line.
Double check with Verizon that the data plan will not activate on the dumb phone's line.
Enjoy your new phone with unlimited data! Too bad the person who uses that dumb phone won't have an upgrade for another couple years.
If other lines on the account have upgrades available all you will need to do is update using one of the other updates. The line yoy used for the upgrade will now have a 2gb plan but you don't activate with that line. Just put your SIM in and you will still have your UNLIMITED DATA. Hope this helped.

The 'new every two' was discontinued 2 years ago. The reason you get a new subsidized phone price is because you're re-entering into a contract with verizon... so it's like it's a new contract/line. You don't have credits and there's nothing to transfer, but if your contract is up, you can get the 'new' price. Unless you have unlimited data... you do that and they'll move you to a 'share everything' plan.
I've been told Costco will generally eat the cost of the phone, just to sell you one at the 'new' price and get the credit for your business. You keep the unlimited data and Verizon thinks you paid full retail. I can't confirm that plan will work for you, but many here have said that's worked for them.
Personally, I'm in the EDGE program. Pay $16-30/month more for a new device, keep my unlimited data and every 12 months, get to pick a new device. Yes, you're paying $200-360 for the phone, but A- that's not much more than the 'new' price', B- you get to keep unlimited data, C- you get a new phone every 1 year, rather than 2 years with re-entering a contract and D- you were probably going to pay that much for a phone off eBay anyway if you have unlimited data. Dunno if that makes sense for someone with so many lines, but if you keep it to 1-2 lines and really need that data (like I do), then it makes perfect fiscal sense.

Thanks, I may look into that if I run out of options.
Has anyone ever heard of this working? Seems like a HUGE loophole if it really works.

That's a huge flaw in Best Buy's system if it works. Because the purchase of the new phone requires a re-entry into contract and VZ specifically has blocks on subsidized phone prices on grandfathered data plans. Not even GMs in Verizon stores can override it... I've tried.
So basically, you're placing a 3rd party order and because Best Buy can't send you a live sim card (only VZ can), you swap it for your current one and VZ is never the wiser. Clever, but tread lightly and quickly.. I can't imagine this flaw will remain open for long.

Thanks!

I have done this many times. If the upgrade is on your unlimited data plane line, log into VZ website and transfer it to the tiered smart line. When you phone arrived, call VZ and activate on your unlimited data line.

Ive done this twice as well. I went to the store and did this. They understood what I was doing too. They didn't care. They thought it was smart. Just transfer the upgrade to a dumbline and then upgrade. Then have them activate it under ur unlimited line.

Just a quick update for everyone:
I couldn't update because of my talk plan. Since I claimed my broken screen through Asurion, I talked them into making a "one-time" exception and sending me a brand new S4 instead of another S3.
I'm selling the S4 and buying a Moto X. They told me they're in and out of them. I convinced them to send me a new S4 (as a "one time" exception because of my great history).
Im going to sell the S4 and buy a Moto X.
I already convinced Motorola to send me a free case and $50 off coupon. Awesome deal! :victory::victory:
Suck it Verizon!
UNLIMITED FOREVER!! :laugh::highfive:

Now you'll be really jealous. Since they have that $100 off sale Monday, I conned free Royal Blue earbuds and the anti-glare film out of them! I'm still gonna call back Monday to see what they're doing for the people who just ordered them too lol
