Has anyone found a working flashlight app for the N5? I found it was pretty useful for me to be able to click a widget/icon and have the flash on the camera fire up. I had one on my Note, and found I miss the functionality.
Thought I would ask before trying the multitude of apps out there in the play store.
Thanks!
Here's one...

I use one called Tiny Flashlight + LED, works great and has a nice selection of widgets that you can place on your home screen. There is a slight delay though, that wasn't present on my last device.

TeslaLED is the one I've always used, it's by the same people who make Nova Launcher.
Is it just me or is the torch slow to come on? I noticed this in comparison to my Galaxys S3, which fires up without delay.
I use Brightest Flashlight
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=goldenshorestechnologies.brightestflashlight.free
The n1torch I backed up from CM for Nexus 4 works.
I use a widget called Power Toggles available in the Play Store. It includes a switch that is a small flash graphic that turns the flash on like a flashlight. It is instaneous. The other toggles are very handy as well.

Which flashlight app has the power up (not the click) sound to go with it? Been looking for it, just can't remember.

I've been using Switch Pro Widget since the N1 days and it still works just fine on the N5.
I use Powertoggles https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.painless.pc and also Dashlight https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spectrl.DashLight

Power Toggles seems just as slow as any other app. About 0.5 to 1 second to engage. Think it might just be the LED itself is slow to engage.
+1 for Tesla led

Nexus devices don't support sysfs.
AKA the entire camera module has to be fired up before the torch can be turned on.

I'm running the Purity ROM on my nexus 4 and 5. The torch on my N4 comes on instantly when toggled while on the N5 its about a 4 sec delay before it comes on...so I doubt that reasoning..might be right..(I don't even know what sysfs is or mean)....but i can confirm its not all nexus devices
Is there a app that doesn't lock the screen when the display turns off, I find it a bit annoying on android to turn on the phone, on symbian I just had to press any key to turn on the display without unlocking it, and lock it only using the lock key.
I prefer a app like LG G2's Knock On.

theres a kernel here what does what you want ,well i think it does
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565299
I don't want to upgrade to a CFW now. I prefer enjoying rhe phone on stock than to deal with minor hindrances which ruin the experience on a CFW, like the camera bug mentioned in the thread you quoted to.

You're out of luck then unfortunately, custom kernel is the only thing that offers it right now.

Thanks for the apps but with both the apps the phone gets locked after the screen turns off, I wanted a app that turns off the autolock of phone and just turns off the screen to save power. So I can press any key on the phone to see the screen without unlocking it each time.

double tap to wake is not equal to double tap to "move"
Well if I just give it two taps the display comes on and I can see my active display. When lg marketed the feature I thought it was neat so I double tapped my phone and viola, it works.

It's hardware dependent. Some devices have kernels that implement a wakelock for a brief amount of time that then respond to tapping. This seems useless as it's keeping your phone from sleeping and only works for a brief time after screen off.

there's an app for that. I can't remember if it was the gravity app or another one. Chances are though, it would kill Active Display's precision

Why don't you wanna use power button?
If custom kernels are available yet then grab yourself one with touch to wake...
I'm pretty sure that your device has nfc..... You can use xposed and some nfc unlocking apps available here or on Google play....
And the most best one! Plug in you headset or charger and you device will wake up! No root no hastle or any additional app needed!

Why don't you want to use your power button?
Anyway , there are some custom ROMs that allow you to wake the phone up by pressing the volume buttons.
and there are some custom kernels available to wake your phone up by swiping over the buttons. this feature is called Sweep2Wake (S2W) .
But if you don't want to use custom ROMs/Kernels on your phone then you can try using some apps that wake your phone up by using your proximity sensors or light sensors. But this kind of apps will most likely drain your battery,
So if you don't want to root your phone and unlock it then just stick to using the power button !
Please press the thanks button if i helped !

Well, nfc is Near Field Communication. Unlocking your device with this technique just looks much more awesome. Just buy some nfc tags and configure to use them, swipe your phone over them and your phone wakes up!
Just search nfc unlocker or similar on google play store and the app would guide you for the next steps.
In my device, i have some special mods available which would turn the phone on when a configured tag is swiped even when the screen is off. Just search something similar, As your device is new in the market, you will have to wait till some serious development starts on for your device (custom kernels and ROMs available though)....
But I still don't get the harm not using your power button..... It won't wear off trust me

Well I don't know there are many apps for that! Just type it in the store and you'll find many.
And if you want to root your phone the first thing you need to do is unlock your bootloader. Have you unlocked your bootloader?
Oh but remember, rooting voids your warranty!

Hmmm.. I don't think so.
Well you can use another rooted android phone. But you'd need an OTG Cable and a Micro USB Cable. And that other android phone must support OTG too.
So never mind, using a computer is much easier.

Hey! I found a really cool app named 'Gravity' which used the proximity sensor to wake your device when you take it out of you pocket or pick it up from a table. And it is capable of doing the reverse too (locking). It doesn't leeches battery (even doesn't shows in the stats) and does not require any root access. Just install and your ready to rock!

We cannot say alot of battery but it has its effects. .. experiment is needed.
Try the app I recommended. .... get it from play store.....works like a charm
---------- Post added at 01:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:00 PM ----------
Its called gravity screen
Straight forward as the title of the thread. .
The name's Knockr and here's the Play Store link-
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tecnology.angs.knockr
All credits to the developer. . :highfive:
I'm just sharing it with the community. .
I reckon, that's the closest thing we can reach without the kernel level access/modification. .
Good things in life are not for free. . what it implies in this particular case that the app would add to your battery discharge. . But, as I mentioned earlier-that's the closest thing we can reach without the kernel level access/modification. .
What this app does it, make all pixels go black (AMOLED screens switches off the pixels to show Black) therefore, ensuring that there's minimal battery consumption. .
This means that those who think that the app will function without having any effect on Battery-this app ain't meant for you. .
For their kind info-even the nativly supported devices use battery to provide the phone with this feature so please don't make a fuss about this app using battery
& to those that consider that it promotes laziness-I ask. . Really? :silly:
Not a good option because it drain alot battery energy

It makes no sense whatsoever. If you want this feature then guess what? Press the back button twice scroll up to the G2 forums or alternatively scroll down for the G3 forum because if you can honestly say this app is feasible then you must be lost....

I know, the phone may not consume any power while screen is completely black, but it 'never' sleeps. No deep sleep = uncontrollable battery consumption = problem.

+ you can use Gesture Navigation & add a double tap to sleep by using Gravity Box mod action shortcut
this way you won't be required to focus your double tap on a small section of the screen unless you want to put the phone to sleep while being in an app
I have used these 2 mods in conjunction to have Power Menu from Left slide in Notification Panel
I change volume by sliding left/right over the status bar
I use Notification Toggle to bring me to Home Screen without pressing the hardware button & also to open the recent apps' list without long pressing the hardware home button
I use Ultimate Smart Cover (its an app & not a mod) to wake up my phone without needing to touch hardware buttons :victory:
