How to set off UMTS/3G for saving battery??

Hi mates,
as already recommended, I just ask how I can deactivate UMTS/3G on my TP. Several tests mean that with this little trick may be the battery-performance much better. But how to do??

you should just be able to hold down the end call key, a list will come up and there you are.

i used advanced config
menu-->more settiungs->comm manager
then i enabled 3G (you have to disable another one if you want to add a new item)
anyway after that 3G appears in the comm tab in TF3D
every time i dont use the the device for massive internet stuff i turn it off..
i found that it saves a lot of battery like this
another method is to just go to your phone settings and set the network to GSM only...but this method is far more time consuming

(Solved) Auto disconnect data whilst in sleep mode

Hi,
I have been experiencing major problems with my email checking. Most of the time it doesnt follow the schedule I have set up and if it does, it never disconnects the data connection.
I had tried everything, changing the battery and ac resume from suspend time to every option, setting the auto disconnect after x time feature in advance config and whatever I did I could not get a reliable solution......
Until now.
Its a bit long winded but it works, I have been testing for the last couple of days.
What I have done is
1. Install SKSchema (You do need to buy this software but it is well worth it) http://www.s-k-tools.com/index.html?m_downloads.html#sc

4. In advance config, under power management, set battery resume and ac resume from standby to 90 seconds, save and soft reset.
5. In SKSchema, go to settings and turn watch mode on. Then go to tools, press watch and then new. Under 'watch for', select 'any connection', under 'any connection' select 'connected', under 'execute', select 'device' and 'screen on'. Under 'with parameters' where it says #p() in betwen the brackets put in the name of your internet connection that is used to get your email for example mine is contract internet so it looks like #p(contract internet). Press OK.
6. Still in SKSchema go to tools again, press watch then new. Under watch for, select 'any connection', under 'any connection' select 'disconnected', under 'execute' slect 'device' and 'screen off'. Under 'with parameters' do the same as above and put your internet connection in between the brackets. Press OK.
7.Open up rk-OSR. Under 'accounts' make sure outlook email accounts and the email accounts you want to check are selected then tick the enable box.
Under schedules, add the scheduled times you want.
Under 'outlook', tick auto close outlook
The wait time to sync is the time it takes to check your accounts so select a time you think it will take to carry out these tasks. I have mine set to 20 seconds, you may want longer if you are checking multiple accounts.
Under 'internet' I have mine set to default connection which uses 3G/GPRS but you can set it to use wifi if you are in a available network. It will turn the wifi on, sync and then turn it off. If you select the option to use wifi or default this will look for wifi and if it cant connect will use 3G/GPRS.
Make sure you tick the switch off GPRS/3G box. This turns teh data connection off after sync.
The connection wait time is set to 20 secs
Under 'options' sync only if device is sleeping means that if you are say using tomtom, it wont sync whilst its doing this. I have this un selected.
Silent sync means it wont wake up the device. I have this selected
Notify of unread emails does exactly that as does notify failure to connect. I dont have wither of these selected.
Sleep device after sync i have ticked.
Press save and then ok
8. In the device sounds and notification settings under new email message, make sure you dont have the show message on screen ticked other wise the application wont close properly if you get a message.
Thats it, you are done.
Basically the reason for the SKSchema part is that when my device ws locked and in standby, the email sync would happen but it would get stuck on the messaging app and not go back to the today screen. The scripts basically turns the screen on when it has connected to the internet and then off when it is disconnected allowing the app to close properly.
I know it is a bit long winded but it is the only thing i have found that works flawlessly.

yea I hate my data connection staying open, but this seems a little much. I wonder if someone could make a little app that basically does what all these do for the fix to work. or maybe MS should just fix it.

You could just use DiamondTweaks and enable "DisconnectAfter" it will disconnect your internet connection after the specified time of no activity.

Hmmm... the diamondtweak is in fact an Option but the Problem with this method is, that the Connection wont disconnect while in Standby, because (i think) the Tweak isnt active during sleep mode (just like any other app/method). You will recognize that when you establish a connection, go to sleep mode immediately and wake up the phone after lets say 20 minutes. The Connection-Bubble will tell you, that the data connection has been active during the whole sleep-time...
So still no solution here apart from the quiet complicated one in the first post, huh...? (Thanks anyway

i had the same problem when auto syncing my hotmail account. i downloaded every auto disconnect program i could find and it worked most of the time.
it was mainly when i auto synced hotmail that the data connection would just stay open. however when i auto synced my google mail account it would close, whether it was in sleep mode or not.
so after searching for more solutions i came across this thread. i didnt follow all the instructions. i just downloaded the rk-OSR program and set my schedule and other preferences.
now the syncing of both my accounrs happens automatically through this program and my data disconnects as it should.

Disable all data connections
I had a huge problem with a few applications auto starting a data connection in my pocket and never shutting off. I wouldn't have a problem with it if I pay for unlimited data(which I don't). My solution to this was going into the connections settings and change the "select which networks are automatically used" to "my ISP" which I never set one up. This way, anytime it tries to connect using data from the cell provider, it pops up an error message and yea, no pocket data transmitions. I guess you could set up a false "my ISP" if you have already set up one.

There is an option somewhere in WM6.5 to turn off data connection when in sleep mode, i enabled it, but now it does not turn the data back on to check email. I spent 3 hours searching through the options to disable this feature and put it back to the default but it appears to be gone or I can no longer find it. Does anyone know where this option is supposed to be hiding so I can confirm if it in fact disappeared?

I konw a fix called "GPRS-Tweak.cpl" can help you to disconnect the network when you shut down you app which must connnet the network.
I just have a chinese version, unzipped the attachment the copy into the window folder then, you will find it your startmenu>setting>system .
but is a chinese version ,if you want english version you'd better search on google.

Found an easier way:
Settings > phone
then go to one of the last 'tabs' and the option to turn on/off GPRS etc when in standby is there...

Auto GPS comms switcher?

Has anyone heard or know of software that'll switch my WiFi on or off depeding upon where i am currently located using GPS? e.g. home or work? or wherever i've previously manually turned WiFi on and got a connection?

Its the most important program for a device running WM !!!
And I mean it.
Depending on cell towers and/or scheduled tasks it will change profiles, task and whatever you can think your device should do for you...
Exampel: My phones runs a close apps at 0100. At 0600 it reboots, turn on sound and let the alarm go. At 0730 the phone turns on and the screen becomes brighter. At 0800 a schedule starts, so IF CMP recons certain cell towers it turns on my Car profile. That one changes when I arrive at work to a work profile. Different sounds and lots more. IF my calender say I am in a meeting the screen will turn off and and sms will be sent to any that call me...
I have schedules for everyting. Nights - evening, weekend and wifi, tugging kids to bed and more....
So in short. CMP let you control whatever your device should do according to your position, the time of the day or your calender.

It has MANY details so it might take you some time to get deep with it, but from then it WILL become THE app of your device..trust me.

Thanks Martin, That looks like it does what i want, using cell phone masts is a much better idea than using GPS i guess.
However i'm put off slightly by the ugly skins and many details that will take me some time to get configured, i just want a simple background service that remembers what cell phone masts were responding when i get a successful authenticated wifi connection, and to use that information to turn wifi on the next time i'm in that area. The rest of my phone's profile such as back-light and ringtones etc i'm totally happy with managing myself as i'm not yet ready for my phone to be in control of my life! - i guess what i'm saying is the service shouldn't have any need for a configuration screen, and if it does, then it should be formatted and laid out in a standard way that doesn't look so scary or require me to identify my screen size before i download it!..
perhaps someone out there with more time on there hands than me could write this service and sell it on marketplace?!

I couldn't resist the challenge.. i have written this as a tiny background service...
Wherever you turn your wifi on and get a connection, your phone will remember this and turn it on next time your there, also if you wander outside that 'connected' location and loose your wifi connection your wifi will be turned off until either you wander into a previously 'connected' location or turn it on manually... - turning it on manually and connecting to a wifi network will add that location etc etc... so no profiles, no config, no skins, no setup, no frills.. just plain handy.
if like me anyone is sick of wifi draining the battery when accidentally left on, or up sizing your phone bill when its accidentally left off, then get in touch and i'll slip you a copy to beta-test for me!

Best GPS setting - lock in 5 seconds

These settings work the best for me so far. I live in new york and i get a lock in 5 seconds flat!
1. Navigate to Settings > Location & Security and uncheck the box next to "Use Wireless Networks".
2. Go to the phone's dialer and enter the number *#*#1472365#*#* then press send to access the phones LBSTestMode menu.
3. In the LBSTestMode menu, press “Application Settings” and change “Operation Mode” to “MS Assisted.” & turn "ON" skyhook
4. Navigate to the “SUP/LCP Settings” and the change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7262
5. Make sure the settings are saved and reboot your phone.
6. Navigate back to Settings > Location & Security and check the box next to “Use Wireless Networks.”

Tried it. So, question: Should I leave the Wireless networks on generally? For things like geotagging pictures, weather updates, etc, and then turn on GPS Satellites in the event I want to use navigation? In that case should I turn off Use Wireless Networks or just leave it on? Any ideas on those things?
I'm in a basement apartment, so GPS testing and such is pretty much a moot point in here, but I do want to mention that I made the changes you suggested, rebooted my phone and went to maps and it picked me up on there instantly. This is without GPS satellites checked and using the wireless networks. This seems to be already a huge improvement because yesterday I was standing outside for 10 minutes with 8-9 satellites in view and google maps couldn't find my location.

awsome... glad it helped... i keep Wireless networks on and i get a lock in 5 seconds flat... try it both ways and see what works for you... but these are by far the fastest and the best settings...

I live in West Tennessee, I tried these settings about 15 minutes ago and I have yet to get a lock.

I tried this and it worked. I generally don't have my WIFI on, so i turned it on and went outside. had a lock within 5 seconds (i was connected to my home wifi).

u guys the use wireless networks uses things like wifi and ur wireless provider so ofcourse it be faster

STOP telling people to use MS assisted. That only helps while standing still. For moving it is worthless. Use MS based instead.

if that is true... then when ur in LBStestmode... and you are doing a get position test... why does it show my speed? i have tried it in my car and also while walking... gives accurate speed

Speed on the menu isnt a very good measure. Use a GPS app and get in a car and you will see it keeps losing track of you (jumping all over the place or losing fix)

I agree. I didn't have any issues to begin with but I applied this "fix" just to see if it would make a difference and my GPS went to CRAP! I restored default settings and am back to getting a fix in about 20 seconds.

A non-suck Tasker data management script

Here is a simple-ish script I wrote to manage data flow on my phone. Mobile data on/off is easy enough but what most users have a hard time pulling off is when to toggle wifi on and off with minimal consumption. Using local tower states is pretty common but it's inaccurate and slow; additionally my method uses less battery life.
Room for improvement:
The only thing I would like to do in order to improve this is to have the script not disable data when downloading or streaming. This is possible but is unique per device per ROM so I can't really go into detail about how to do it. As a summary though there's a file that is written to that keeps information about bytes traffic. You just read this file to determine how much data is flowing in a specific interval and if it exceeds a certain amount then don't turn off data just yet. It's also a known issue where with some devices the 3G state change won't register when toggling manually while connected to wifi.
Features:
Wifi and 3G will disable two minutes after the screen is off so it's not constantly toggled through intermittent use.
On some phones or providers the 3G status becomes unknown when in a call or when connected to wifi; this script works around that.
Unlike most data management apps this one will remember your 3G status should you manually change it, in case you don't want 3G on at all.
Data is still checked on an hourly basis(this can be adjusted of course).
Fast and accurate wifi connecting with very minimal power drain.
Just a few things explained for those curious:
I check the phone state to ensure that 3G isn't detected as manually disabled when your provider uses 3G to place calls.
I check the screen on time because on some phones/ROMs the 3G doesn't actually register as toggled until the screen flickers back on. Because of this 3G appears to only become disabled once the screen turns back on and it can be registered as manually turning it off.
The wifi timer exist so the script won't check for a wifi too frequently.
You can adjust the hourly checks under Cycle 3G.

What version of Tasker is this developed under? Just curious, I'm running the 4.0 beta, and I just had to back out of b19 to b18 because of issues with my data management profile. I'll try yours out, it sounds a lot better than mine...

It's working great for me on 4.0b18. I still need to look at the logic being used as to what causes it to 'wake up' and connect to wireless, is it simply a delay after screen on, or are you also looking at other factors?

My friend had problems getting his to recognize the profile as well. I'm not sure why.. It might have to be in the proper directory. You might also have to make a new profile tab for it. Hopefully rpr69 can give us some insight.
But to answer your question as to how I check Wifi...
When screen turns on I immediately try to connect to Wifi before trying 3g. 3g will still enable briefly after for phones that require it for MMS. If Wifi isn't connected after X seconds then it disables Wifi and won't try again for 10 minutes. If it does connect successfully there will be no 10 minute wait next screen on.
Added manual toggle memory to Wifi as well. I'll post the changes later and update the zip file.

Are you importing the profile, or just dropping it in a directory? The proper way is to import into a new project. In 1.3 of Tasker (from memory, it's been awhile), you need to pull down from the top of the Tasker top bar which should then give you the Projects tabs. Long press on the Home tab, and you should get an 'import' option, navigate to where you downloaded the project file on your phone and select it, and it should create a new tab for it, with the profile and tasks under it. If you had previously just manually copied the xml file into the projects directory, move it out of there or the import may fail.

Ok got it to work I forgot is was a project and kept trying to import only a profile. It seems great so far!!!

To make it so it won't check wifi when you don't want it to add the following...
ProfileName - Record Wifi State
Trigger - State > Wifi Connected *
Enter Task - Set Variable %wifistate to 1 if screen ~ on
Exit Task - STOP If %ScreenOnTime + 2 > %UPS
......Set Variable %wifistate to 0 if screen ~ on
then under task "Data Types On - Type 2 P2"
very first line add - If Then > %wifistate = 1
Place a closing End If at the very bottom, and move the "Mobile Data > Set On (if %3GState = 1)" second from the bottom, just above closing.
I also just uploaded the xml file again to the main post.
