LED Notification malfunction - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I suppose this has already been discussed but I still need an answer.
When I receive a notification, like SMS, sometimes the LED lights up and behaves as it should, and other times it simply doesn't blink. This seems to be random... Is there any way to fix this?
Also, is this a software issue, or hardware issue that needs RMA?
Thanks.

I've had a similar issue with using the custom stock notification, but I switched over to Light Flow and you you can choose your color led notification and it works fine you try it out.

I already tried Light Flow and the problem persisted... So does that mean it's a hardware defect?

Generally I've found it to be software related. Which custom ROM are you on? Could you possible test on another to see if the problem persists?

My Nexus is completely stock, and unrooted... The problem hasn't happened in the last couple of days but I'm concerned it will return...
The LED itself functions well, but sometimes it just isn't triggered by notifications as it should.

Every once in awhile something similar happens to mine. If I power the screen on and off without actually unlocking the phone, the LED begins flashing normally as it should. Not sure if sometimes it just doesn't get triggered.

So that means it is software related? A bug in KitKat?

I thought mine had a similar problem initially on stock, but I think it was just me being picky ..... I'm running the CM11 nightlies now and it's working fine... Generally though the light will only turn on for notifications when the screen is off... Perhaps that's what you're noticing...

Not really, sometimes I light up the screen and I have a notification and there was no LED blinking...

Is that for an sms? I'm not sure how many different notifications it actually lights up for on stock.

Not just for SMS. You see, right now I received an email through the Gmail app and the LED blinked once and stopped. And I turned the screen on and off and then it blinked once again and stopped. Really weird!
But now I got a text message and it's working fine. It's really random!

That sounds pretty similar to what mine was doing. I don't think lightflow even helped too much... I would recommend CM11.... It has customization for the notification light built in and it all seems to work very well.

It should be a KitKat bug then. How can I report bugs to google?

Actually, that wasn't very helpful. I found it on my own nonetheless.
I wonder how this kind of bug has gone unnoticed or unfixed for so long.

I will try to use another ROM and then report back. I suppose this is a KitKat bug.

as far as i know, no dev has fixed it, I suspect it will be fixed soon just not a top priority on the things to do.

soft key lights work fine on mine.what problem are you guys having?
My Droid 2 with a GB leak had issues with the button lights as well. It seemed like they were reversed - when it was light they were on, but when it was dark they would be off. It must be the last thing developers work out.

I've noticed this too before, but not since the latest release (4/3/13), could be a coincidence, but if you are on an older build, try updating.

mmmm, I am using CyanogenMod-Dev-edison-nightly-20130401-2132-signed.591fan.com.zip. It is the latest release from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2121029. I'm not sure if it's the same.

yeah, that is the latest. I'm not sure what the problem is. try a fix permissions in recovery, I haven't been having a problem. also try in different light conditions, as that could be related, as well as any crap that has built up over the sensor (just left of the notification light, you can see it at the right angle)

I have this doubt. What it's "more latest" CyanogenMod-Dev-edison-nightly-20130401-2132-signed.591fan.com.zip(previously mentioned) or CM10-nightly-NONE_CN-20130412-2102-signed.zip from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869692
I'm sorry if my question is too trivial.

mmm and What exactly do Fix Permissions in Recovery?... I just wanna know XD. Anyway It doesn't solve my issue
I would also like info on this because my proximity sensor is broke and always thinks there is an object by the phone, which makes in-call operations impossible...

Led notification light issues

Hi all
Just got my 2nd nexus 5, first one went back for touch screen issues. Got 2nd one and this has problem too.
If someone sends me a text the pulse notification light pulses once and that's it. No repeat. However after that if someone sends me a text it works as it should, ie repeats every 10 seconds.
Seems very random as to when it works properly. Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks all
Chris

Yes, people have this problem on stock rom.. It appears randomly though and not as often as you're getting. A restart fixes it... Are you using Light Flow or any app to control the LED??
No will light flow solve this?

May be, May be not. Even light flow has some random problems with LED notifications... For some people it works flawlessly, for some it doesn't... Only way is to try it out...

Trying it now seems to work ok. Strange that my last nexus didn't suffer this problem. Wounder if Google are aware of this issue?
Also on a side note not sure if it's related but I'm sure my first nexus 5 did a software update when I first took it out of the box, my new one did not do that.

Yes, I think they are aware of it... I remember reading it somewhere around XDA about it.. Can't find a link to it though.. I guess we will just have to wait for the update and see... FYI, a reboot fixes the issue temporarily..
It didn't update because the ones which were manufactured in January came with 4.4.2 Out of the box which is the latest update!

Thanks for your reply mate, for me when I reboot the first message does not work, then they seem ok after that, that's just for sms, I get no notifications at all with whatsapp etc, however light flow seems to work ok at moment but would be nice if Google did a fix.

[Q] Leds only works with screen locked

Hi.
When I configure an app in the led settings of my opo the led only works if the screen is locked.
But, for example, if I connect the charger the led is always on, with the screen unlocked too.
I also try lightflow but it's the same.
Can anyone help me? Thanks!

They made it like that, other manufacturers set up their LED notification light like that too. It's frustrating.

lollipop flashlight bug

Hi
Anyone having an issue with the stock flashlight app on the new Lollipop 5.0 not turning on
As a person working in IT and with crappy eye sight, this app really is a must for me.
A reboot of the phone will fix it, but by then the need for the light will normally have passed as I'll just ask someone around me for help
Found this was happening on the preview l as well, thought it they have sorted it in the finished release.
Cheers
Paul
What's wrong with the flashlight?

Im asking to see if the light does in fact work. If the light doesn't work with the camera either, then your light may be broken
The issue is intermittent and a quick reboot always fixes the issue. I must check the next time it goes, if the camera is broke as well

I have no idea what could cause that. My flashlight comes on every time I toggle it. Tesla LED (I think that's the name of it) is a good flashlight app in the Play Store if you want to try a third party app and see if it works better for you
Yup. I posted about this. When it refuses to work try open the camera app. It'll say cannot connect to camera

Most likely its a camera issue then. The flash LED and the camera software are connected.
Only rebooting fixes it that I've found so far. Seems to happen after using the flashlight for a long time

From what Ben36 is saying, it seems to be caused my leaving the flashlight on for a long period of time. So I would say it's a bug in the system that Google needs to fix. Try other apps like the one I mentioned and see if you get the same issue.

Had a similar issue today, flashlight turned off for no reason, then refused to turn back on until i restarted the phone.
never happened to me before until today and the only difference was that the phone was charging now.
I can say I am also having this issue and hopefully a fix is on the way unless cm does it first...
