No system, only TWRP with S-on. Major clusterduck!! - HTC One S

Hi all
through a series of stupid actions, I am now in a position where I have TWRP, no working image and S-on. This all stemmed from an attempt to upgrade to CM10.2. Anyway, a lot of reading has led me to the conclusion that I need to go back to a standard RUU in order to set S-off. The problem is my fastboot is 2.15 and I cannot seem to find an RUU anywhere.
The fastboot screen details are as follows:

If anyone can point me in the right direction for a RUU or a possible way to get S-off through fastboot, I would be eternally grateful. I have already spent around 15 hours trying to sort this out. Needless to say, I have learnt some lessons about reading instructions and making backups.
Regards
Richard

Did you flash boot.img in fastboot? If you didn't, you should try it first before you attempt to do S-OFF. To get S-OFF, I would use Rumrunner.

I don't know why you want to s-off but i think you don't have to. If you have twrp you can mount your sd via twrp to a computer, copy any rom you want to the sd, flash boot.img with fastboot from the rom zip and flash rom via twrp. But you should first unlock your bootloader

Thanks both for the replies. I have transferring a boot.img using fastboot, but this just gets me into a never ending boot screen. The boot.img I tried were cm 10.1.2 and then a 10.1.3. I had read that this will not work with S-on, but I am far from an expert. I have tried rumrunner, but this needs adb to work, and from what I gather adb only works when the phone itself is also booted into an OS.
I had tried to get adb working, but I never get any response from adb devices as the phone never gets past the bootloader.
I realise that I don't need S-off to flash a stock ROM, but my problem is that can't find a stock ROM for a 2,15 Hboot. My goal is to install CM 10.2.
Regards
Richard

You can not install any boot.img with locked bootloader, you can just ruu back.
If you want to install cm 10.2 unlock your boot loader, download cm10.2, flash boot.img from the downloaded zip and flash cm from recovery. Otherwise you can just ruu back

Hi,
I had tried this, but got into an endless fuzzy blue screen loop. This was because of S-on I believe. I had relocked the bootloader in preparation for an RUU.
I had figured that my best way out of this mess would be to flash a stock ROM, turn S-off and then flash cm

Trying to Custom rom Hboot 1.18

OK, so I am trying to root and load a rom on my friends HTC Sensation. I used the toolkit, and unlocked the bootloader, and installed a custom recovery. (have had all 3 recoveries at this point).
The Bootloader shows

I tried to then install Viper Rom, and it boot loops, I tried to install what I thought was a stock rom and it hangs on the white HTC screen for well over 20 minutes. I can't get s-off because it won't boot up.... i can't figure out how to upgrade firmware because I'm not s-off. Can someone please point me in the right direction. I am downloading an RUU, but literally have no idea if its the right one. my CID supposedly is T-MOB010.
Please point me in the right direction as to how to end up with Viper Rom on this phone.
Thanks.

Yes it will, RUU upgrade works with S-ON
@OP all you need to do is flash the Tmous RUU from here: http://htcruu.com/Pyramid/RUU_PYRAM...0U_11.23.3504.07_M2_release_256085_signed.exe
i will download and run... thanks so much. wish me luck....
i downloaded and ran the RUU but it said that it was the wrong one and failed.
tried an earlier RUU too, and they both fail. I am running them as administrators, and while the phone is in fastboot. It seems to act like its going to work, and go to a black HTC screen, but then it fails. error [155]

relock the bootloader then run the RUU
to relock bootloader
fastboot oem lock
then connect the phone from fastboot to pc ..the phone should say FASTBOOT USB if connected properly
then run the RUU
EDIT - please close thread... I didn't realize I had to be bootloader locked. just on a whim locked it back up and it worked like a charm.

Just reflash your unlock code from HTC dev install twrp then flash away
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Don't panic, this should be an easy fix.
Once you relock, you have to run a ruu or unlock again. But you're trying to run a ruu for older firmware, which is why it's failing.
Just push the unlock token again, and you should be able to boot to recovery. If not, push the recovery image again. I don't recommend CWM, even though it's been ported to this phone. That version of TWRP should work, just confirm that you've got the Evita version.
OK i have unlocked again and re pushed recovery TWRP 2.4.1.0
But I still cant boot into the recovery option..

did you verify you are unlocked now, or did you just assume since you pushed the token again?
Also, are you certain you're using the right version of TWRP and not one for another phone (like the endeavour/Tegra One X)?
I pushed the same token and rebooted the device at the top its now says unlocked

Here is my accomplishments so far:
- Unlocked with HTC Dec, therefore it says unlocked as mentioned above
- Installed TWRP v2.5.0.0, and can successfully boot into recovery
Yet to be done and do not know how to:
- S-OFF
- Super CID
- Permanent Root
Problems installing ROM:
- unable to install. Various errors with different roms, such as:
1) unable to mount sdcard
2) assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device")
3) error executing updater binary in zip
Please advise. Thank you for your time.
Note: the device is locked to Rogers. It is currently in bootloop. I do not know what I did but before installing TWRP, the device went in bootloop after unlocking bootloader and it would simply not start. Although, as mentioned I can successfully boot into the recovery and mount the sdcard from there to transfer files to the phone.

Why are you relocked?
Unlock again and update TWRP, then try to flash a ROM again. What ROM(s) are you trying to flash.
Be aware that since you are s-off, you will need to extract boot.img from the ROM you are trying to flash, and manually flash with fastboot. You will need to do this every time you flash a ROM, unless you get s-off.
Also, I don't know why you posted to this old thread. Aside from the OP also having the Rogers version, it has nothing to do with your issue. Should have started your own thread.
I'll just clarify that when Redpoint said you need to update TWRP you should update it to TWRP 2.6, your current version (2.5) is very buggy. Also, he means since you are s-on you need to flash the boot.img, when you get s-off this will no longer be required.

I tried to flash 10.1 cyanogen and after the the boot loop I found out I need newer version of hboot. But to get newer version of hboot apparently I have to get the phone back to stock and do the OTA update? I flashed this back before the jellybean ota rolled out. I cant seem to find my backup either.
Can someone help me with step-by-step guide on what I need to do to get this back to stock?
You don't need a different hboot, you need s-off. What's going on is that you need to fastboot flash the boot.img with that hboot. With s-off, that restriction goes away.
I hate suggesting S-OFF to everyone as it makes everything easily writeable which can be dangerous for many people -_-
But yes you can S-OFF or just fastboot flash boot boot.img from the rom you're flashing. If you're not going to be flashing often, or if you are afraid you may accidentally flash the wrong thing and brick this option does work.

So S-OFF and then "fastboot flash boot boot.img" after extracting the boot.img from the 10.1 cyanogen mod?
Or just extract the boot.img from 10.1 cyanogen and then fastboot flash boot boot.img"?
And if I wanted to get it back to stock, couldnt I just download and run this from the HTC site - htc_one_x_RUU_2.20.502.7_att_us_08022012.exe ?

Those "tampered"and "unlocked" messages in bootloader are completely normal. That means you can now flash a custom recovery, and then from that recovery you can flash a custom ROM.
If you want to RUU for some reason, you'll probably want to s-off first. If you have SuperCID and are s-on, running an RUU could brick your phone.

Your CID is fine, and because you have relocked your bootloader you should be ok to run the RUU.
Have you triple checked that your apn settings are correct? That's usually the cause of a loss of data.
Sent from my Evita
No I didn't set that up yet haha that would be the reason why. Just did and it works now!
I'm going to wait for my phone to charge up some more before it run the RUU. Hopefully all goes well, and I can actually get my device properly rooted..
Thank you for your help
Running the RUU won't really help the rooting process. You could just unlock your bootloader again and flash a recovery. Just make sure it's a recovery for this device (Evita) because that may be where you went wrong in the first place.
Sent from my Evita
Alright I downloaded the HTC One X(evita) All-In-One Toolkit
I will follow the steps on there
Do I have to do the Xfactor and MotoChopper steps?
Do you still have the unlock.bin from when you unlocked your phone the first time? It should still work.
Sent from my Evita
Yes I still have the email from HTC and I made a backup of the file as well
I just used that toolkit and went right to the unlock bootloader.
In the bootloader it is now
***Tampered***
***Unlocked***
I flashed TWRP 2.5.0.0 and put the SU files in my main directory
Worked!! Flashed the SU file and phone booted up properly now
You should be able to use it again to unlock your bootloader. Just go back to htcdev and do the last part where you enter the unlock.bin.
Then I recommend flashing TWRP 2.6 recovery from here.
Sent from my Evita
Should I just reflash 2.6 instead then? Do I have to remove anything or can I just flash over top?
Also I'm on 4.0.3 should I update the OS and then flash 2.6?
You can't flash TWRP until you've unlocked your bootloader, so do that first. Then flash TWRP by using the following fastboot commands:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-evita.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Now you can either flash a superuser zip to have root on the stock ROM. Or you can flash a custom ROM.
Sent from my Evita
I got it all to work using the toolkit. I have superuser on my phone now. But I used the 2.5.0.0 file instead.
Do you think its wiser to update my OS and then reflash to 2.6.0.0?
You don't need to update the os, you can flash any ROM you like once you have the correct recovery installed. Just make sure you flash TWRP 2.6, because 2.5 has major bugs.
Sent from my Evita
Alright I flashed 2.6.0.0 now. Is there any custom ROM you would recommend?
Should I run the S-off commands in the toolkit before I flash the custom ROM?
It's against the rules to ask which ROM is best/most stable etc, so it's against the rules for me to answer something like that.
But...
If you're looking for a Sense based rom, look in Android Development section, there you'll find MagioRom (Sense 5), or if you want Sense 4 there's ViperXL, RageXL, and others.
If you're looking for a stock android/aosp ROM, look in Original Android Development. There's a whole bunch of great ROMs in that section, like Cyanogenmod, AOKP, Carbon, Rootbox, Slimbean, etc.
Have a look in the OP (first post) for each ROM, that'll tell you if there are any bugs and a basic rundown of the features, and any requirements you may have to fulfill for the ROM to work. Just find one that suits you best, and if it doesn't, you can just flash another.

Yes I believe that's right. First SuperCID, then s-off, then RUU. Once you've done the RUU, you'll need to reflash TWRP again.

Solution:
I flashed PhilZ CWM Touch recovery in the All-in-One Toolkit and it booted into recovery.
Then I flashed a new rom and performed fastboot flash boot boot.img and my device is now working again!
S-ON btw
What do you mean by "restoring"?
I guess it's not booting anymore!?
Either try to flash a new recovery or
relock phone, download and install the latest RUU.
Sent from my One S using xda app-developers app

I tried to flash a new recovery 3 times, it didn't work.
Could you tell me how to relock my phone and what RUU to install?
Thanks!
You can use the All-in-One Toolkit to relock the bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604677
You can also use the above tool to try to install a recovery - maybe you are lucky
Download the RUU for your provider. Get a list here
http://www.androidruu.com/?developer=Ville
Just copy the file to a windows machine, connect to your One S (HTC drivers have to be installed)
and execute the RUU. The phone will be deleted and a stock Rom is installed.
After that you can re-unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery and then the Rom you prefer.
Some people say that you don't have to relock the bootloader to install the RUU. Well it never
worked for me, but you can try it first.
Get more information here (no need to s-off the phone)

Good luck

So unfortunately I can't use the All-In-One Toolkit...
Is there an alternative?
Also, I tried to run several RUU's, but they seem to be uncompatible with my device.
I'm European and the device is simlock-free.
This is the device info:
Tampered
Unlocked
VLE PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.13.0000
RADIO-0.16.31501S.17_2
OpenDSP-v25.1.0.32.0405
eMMC-boot

Any ideas of what RUU I should pick?
Thank you very much!
I use the following RUU
RUU_Ville_U_JB_45_S_HTC_Europe_3.16.401.8_Radio_1.11.50.05.28_10.27.50.08L_release_301814_signed_2_4.exe
which you can find in the above link. It's the latest official HTC One S rom.
PS: I PM'd you ...

Back to Stock Tmo
Got a One s off ebay after the wife dropped hers. It cam with Cyangenmod on it and the wife is having issues.
As I did not put cyan on it, not sure how to get it off and put Tmo Stock sense back on it.
I looked at the Ruu's and there are several Tmo ones listed, any idea which one I would need?
And..... not to be an idiot...... but maybe step by step instructions on how to do it?
