For those of you who took the 4.3 ota what is your opinion of the updated ,and did you come from a custom rom.I was thinking of talking official 4.3 just curious to here feedback on it ,I know once I do it bootloader is locked for good .I am on Liquid smooth love it but I miss the Samsung features and having a glitch free phone I know ill get back on the verizon ota, been running custom rom since first week of owning phone think im ready to go back stock as long as official 4.3 is good

Why take the OTA when you can just flash the stock Rom? I personally like it but I've always liked TW roms

I know that there' one out there you can flash and maintain a unlocked bootloader but reading the thread sounds like there's a lot of issues with it I use my phone for work so need something 100% eliable Liquid is almost there but still have to do battery pulls get f/c's ,I did have another phone so it didn't matter now this is my only phone
let me rephrase that didn't mean take the ota but flash the official 4.3 which would lock boot loader to take the ota I would have to revert to stock then take the ota easier just flashing 4.3
After a long time flashing custom rom and kernel on my wife S3 and always hear complaints about issue, I decided to flash stock 4.3. Now she's happy with her phone, everything is working smoothly and the phone is pretty fast and snappy, battery life is the best. I have to say, 4.3 is a great improvement over 4.1.2. My recommendation is if you like to play around with flashing custom rom and ok with all the bugs hear and there then it would be fine, but if you want a daily driver, stable phone then stock 4.3 is the way to go. While she's on custom rom, many times when we at a party and when she tried to take picture the camera FC, or displayed weird color, the gps acting up, phone lockup needed to pull the battery to reset etc...Again, if you want a stable, good battery life, go with stock 4.3 and with just root.(I need root to install wifi tethering). Now she has a perfect phone and no more complaints.

that sounds like what I needed to here,did you flash 4.3 or revert to stock and take the ota not sure if there's a difference I already downloaded the stock 4.3
I've had zero issues on the 4.3 rom.
Make a backup and give it a run.

It's depended on what apps you installed on your phone, most of them should be fine with 4.3. When ever I upgrade to a new version, I like a clean install. Do a factory reset (this will wipe all your installed apps and reset your phone back to factory condition, make sure you have a backup of your apps), then let the upgrade run. Once done use saferoot to root.
from crack flasher to stock
i've been a crack flasher since my DX days, having flashed just a couple days after getting my S3. I've been on Hyperdrive, Synergy, AOKP, OSE, stock and various versions of CM to include the best, Mastamoons unofficial.
had to get a replacement phone, and as i was setting it up, the damn thing updated to 4.3 itself.
now... i still get that crackflashing urge, but i will admit, i like having the phone stock. i can make it look like its on any of the other roms, just with minor alterations.
antenna's on the latest is the best i've ever seen, everything works great, and don't see the lag on 4.3 TW as on others.
guess i can live with this for a while, and i do have faith in the DEV community that someone will break the latest, just as in previous versions. But for now, i can live with stock as everything works great!

i have seen many people got problem after installing a new firmware or Rom.
Even though the next update might fix the error, but it feels annoying right?
So do you prefer to stay on stock rom or update if there is a new update?(not custom rom, official one.)
I prefer leaving stock. But i have an SE phone, and they don't do a good job imho of updating/supporting their products. It's a safe answer, but go with what works for you. Our devs are really good, though.

But i afraid if i update and have a problem, and have to change back to previous rom it might affect my warranty, since i still have my phone's warranty i will not root and install custom rom, i afraid it might be affected even though it can still back to stock rom.
I say go ahead and update to a new firmware / rom . It usually shouldn't cause any problems if you follow the steps closely . Also you can always reinstall stock rom and then un root your phone to get your warranty back

I did install a custom rom before to my previous rom and ever heard about getting warranty back by reinstall to stock rom, but i didn't have a chance to do it, so i am not really sure.

I had a LG before, and did try some custom rom. It was not so complicated.
But maybe other phone procedure might be a little different.
I've never left any of my Android phones alone ever. When I got my Motorola Droid (my first android OS phone) I rooted it a few hours after activation, a new ROM a few hours later while at work then put it all back to stock and got it replaced with a HTC Droid Incredible with the 30 day swap thing VZW does.
Flashing a custom ROM or staying stock is the whole reason XDA-Developers exists. Stock firmware are solid builds, but they are also very, very limited in what they allow you to do. I say allow because that is exactly what your carrier/manufacturer is doing with their firmware. With a custom ROM, you open the door to so many more possibilities, (ie tethering, mobile hotspot, Superuser access apps,...)
Now whether to stay on a stock FW or go custom, that is going to be up to you and what you want to get out of your device. My wife and I each have a phone and a tablet. All are Rooted. My Phone (Samsung Vibrant) is running a custom ROM by me, her phone (Motorola XT720) is running a custom ROM, her tablet (Nook Color) is running CyanogenMod 7.2, but my tablet (Asus Transformer) is running stock ROM but custom kernel.
Personally, I do not like Touchwiz from Samsung or Motoblur from Motorola, hate the bloat that both manufacturers put in there that I do not use. I also bought my wife a tablet that was Barnes&Noble branded android based FW, but I completley scrubbed it off and put a custom ROM on there for her. So now she has a full on tablet instead of a simple reader. See where I am going with this?
My tablet is fast, has all I need on it and since I am considered a power-user, I tinker with it but at this point I am satisfied with it as stock. Now, that is not to say that I have not altered it. I put a custom kernel on it and frozen some of the bloat that Asus provided. It came out with Honeycomb and then updated to ICS. Since I have had it on HC, it has seen 6 FW updates and every one of the ICS ROMs were terrible and left most users with a useless piece of machinery. Myself, I was able to keep it from de-evolving into that and have been happy with it ever since.
Hopefully this shows you that there are plenty of options for why to use a custom ROM but also to stick to stock firmware. It really just depends on you and what you want. Flashing is easy. Just read the OPs, search and read some more and above all, learn to make a Nandroid Backup.
Personally, I prefer to stay as close as possible to AOSP, with custom ROMs like Cyanogen. You don´t feel bounded by the locks imposed by the manufacturers or, even worse, the carriers.
In my experience, they are not as stable as stock ROMs (currently, I´m having some random reboots with cyanogen 9 in my Galaxy Note) so, if you don´t feel adventurous, stay stock.

Hey, i am new to rooting, actually the whole android intact. I decided to get a HTC ONE X after having the iPhone for a while. I have watched some videos on rooting and i think i have all that down with boot loader and stuff. I just have a few questions about other stuff regarding rooting the phone with customer ROM's.....
1) if i have a custom rom, and i get an OTA update, will that brick my phone if i do decide to update it? I know that it will take root off... but will it brick it if i just update without doing anything with custom rom?
2)Do custom roms (the one I'm looking at is the cyanogen mod for HTC ONE X) kill the battery more then normal?
3) How do you go back to stock rom if you no longer want the rom.... is it as easy as just going to the reboot screen and selecting stock rom? is the stock rom already on there or do i have to put it on there?
4) If wanted, how easy is it to un-root phone?
5) and just personal opinion, what is the best jellybean Custom rom out right now for HTC one X?

1 - You can't OTA update with a custom rom. Anyway, the custom roms (Sense based) are further updates than the AT&T updates.
2 - When I used CM10, it had quite a bit of wakelock but it's dependent on each phone as well. Many have great battery life.
3 - RUU
4 - When you RUU, you relock your bootloader and it brings it back to stock. Only difference is now in the bootloader, it says re-locked, not locked.
5 - CM10 is pretty good so far, but I'm a fan of AOKP.
1. The OTAs are pulled by software on the phone. Custom ROMs don't have this software and don't pull, so no need to worry.
2. Depends. Keep in mind the current JB ROMs are still a work in progress. CM10 does still have wakelocks, but its getting better.
3. Already said above. Just relock your bootloader and RUU.
4. Easy to unroot. Easy to relock. But once you unlock your bootloader your phone will never say LOCKED again. I honestly have never had an issue with it with warranty repair, but please don't be an asshat and flash a ROM for the wrong One X and then complain to AT&T.
5. Personal preference. The great things about custom ROMs is you can try a bunch out and find the one that you like. I used AOKP a while back and liked it. CM10 is pretty cool but I just had it for a few days as they work out the wakelock issues. Also check out some of the ICS ROMs. CleanROM is pretty solid as well and gives great performance. Don't necessarily limit yourself. That's the beauty of it.
On going back to stock rom, you dont necessarily need to use the ruu. After you get your phone rooted, unlocked, and a recovery for flashing your custom roms, then just make sure before you flash your first rom that you (from recovery) select factory reset (will erase all user data such as 3rd party apps and such) then perform a backup, also in recovery. Now,you have a safe stock rooted rom backup. Go flash any of the roms in this forum and at anytime you can always just go restore your stock rom back
i am currently running cleanrom 5.0 and flashed the ktoonz kernal kt747 and needed help with the KTweaker app that was installed with it, im a noob with roms, kernels,etc.., ive been learning a lot and fell confident flashing and all but can anyone help me with the settings in the KTweaker app, im mainly looking for battery performance and this kernel was reccomended but after 1 day of running it my battery performance was horriable, thank you in advance for any help.
I'm on cleanROM 5.0 also. I tried the other kernals but ended up flashing the rom over again and kept the default kernal as I am getting great battery and performance. 14 hours and 19 minutes at 20% battery, with 4 hours of screen on time. If this helps any. I know you were asking about ktoons but thought I would give you this.

All I wiped was both the caches and flashed the roms again. All my apps stayed. Everything works like a charm.

Is there a way to do this where I will continue to recieve ota updates.... totally updated at this point to jellybean... I kept having problems with roms and am sick of messing around with them.
Side note how is your reception after the last update .... mine pretty much sucks.

Hello, all.
I have a T-Mobile Blaze 4G with rooted stock ROM (Gingerbread), flashed radio version T989UVMC6, manually debloated and dewizzed. I'm running Halo launcher and Busybox Free version 9.6.
Since almost the first day I've had this phone, it would occasionally force close the phone process, usually when hanging up the phone with the Bluetooth radio on and paired with an earpiece. It happened bone stock, rooted, after I changed the modem, whenever. It seemed to happen less often after I changed the modem. The process always starts back up, but the Bluetooth device connection and system sound controls are wonky (unusable) until the phone is rebooted.
The only thing that seems to stop it is running Zepplinrox's V6 Supercharger script. That, however, occasionally freezes the entire system when trying to open certain apps, requiring a reboot. I've run earch after search on this subject, and nobody else seems to have this problem. The only thing I haven't tried is wiping the whole thing and flashing a custom ICS or JB ROM. I tried Dark Knight ver. 8 and hated it pretty much instantly.
I have two questions. Number one; Will flashing a custom ROM fix this situation? I figure that this must be a problem with the crappy stock Samsung ROM. Number two; Which ROM is fully functional and stable? I'd really like to keep this phone dependable. I don't care about the latest and greatest funky cool features that are hit-or-miss at best. I just need dependable, fast and functional.
Since you have been having issues for a while, I would suggest starting fresh. With a few runs of black hole wipe from cwm. Add a run of the gremlin remover for extra cleanliness. Then a flash of the latest ICS rooted stock rom and kernel, for reliability.

I'll definitely go for the rooted version! Does it matter what order in which the ROM and the kernel are flashed? Also, I take it from the name of the download link that I'll have to go through the process of de-bloating this thing again. S'okay, I actually enjoy that part, but I don't want to screw it up since I've not messed with anything newer than GB. Is there a good guide somewhere on the forum for apps that can be dumped safely? I know there was one for GB stock root.

A few more silly questions; Do I need GAPPS or is that just for CM? Aren't the CM 10 ICS nightlies fairly stable and relatively bug-free? I use CM7 on my Nook color and it's...okay... Just a few little annoying things pop up with that. To be honest, I like the idea of starting with a clean slate and adding stuff I like rather than pulling stuff out of the Samsung stock ROM, but the issues I've had with the Nook and CM7 have sort of scared me off. Your opinions?

All the AOSP ROMs for the Blaze needs GAPPs. And yes. The latest CM10 nightly is stable. And you said CM10 ICS? CM9 is ICS and CM10 is Jellybean.

The stock roms don't require gapps, but like Wolf said the cm10 jb variants do.
If your willing to use cm10 it is very stable. Just use the latest CM10 nightly and not the old stable version.

Of course. I get a bit confused ever since people started talking about 10.1.
Okay, I went ahead and installed the stock rooted ROM with the stock kernel. Went through the debloating process (mostly, there are some apps that I'm not sure I can do without so they stay for now), and did some customizing. I'm seeing a bit more battery drain. Is this an issue with ICS or do I need to try another kernel or supercharge the phone? I also have this crazy issue with ROM Manager ver. 5.5.3.0. It tells me that there is an updated version of Clockworkmod Recovery, but it freezes when I try to flash from ROM Manager. Also, ROM Manager freezes when I try to reboot into Clockworkmod Recovery. Maybe I need to test a bit more before I mess with it any more.
**EDIT** Well, it looks as if my CWM recovery installation is corrupted. Can I reflash it without messing up my current ROM?

Since you have it setup, except for battery life. I would make a backup, then try a mod one at a time and see if any help. Also check the battery stats to see if anything of is seen. ICS will use more juice than GB, generally.
I would suggest Nos/direct injection, supercharger, or cross breeder. I would use one and see, then restore and try another.

Some time later...
I've been using the stock rooted ICS ROM since my last post, debloated and dewizzed of course, with Holo Launcher and T989UVMC6 baseband version flashed. Just over a month has passed, and I have good news!
I FREAKING LOVE THIS PHONE!!!
All of the force close and freezing issues have vanished, the phone's battery lasts almost as long as it did on GB, it's WAY more user friendly, and the phone is as fast as it ever was.
The bad news is that my wife got a GS4 and I lust after it now. : /

I'm currently on a custom kernel and rom for 4.3 but I'm having terrible battery life and I'm tired of flashing new roms to get the same result. As for some of my friends that have a verizon S3 phone, they get better battery life and don't have all the problems that I continue to have.
Is there a way to go back to complete stock and let my phone do the OTA update and not have to worry about this phone anymore?
I know I must sound crazy for wanting my phone to go back to normal, but I'm tired of having all the problems and trying to find new roms to have them fail on me, even though everyone else seems to be having good luck with them.
So again I'm a Verizon S3 on 4.3, Baseband VRUCML1. Ktoonz kernel on CleanRom 8
