Messaging apps and HALO - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if anyone found a good messaging app that worked with Halo. So far hangouts is the only one that works reliably for me. AOSP messaging works until I click a contact thread and it switches into the full app. Textra and 8sms open the full app when I try to open them through halo. Oddly enough other messaging programs like kik work fine. Is this just the state of halo on kitkat roms, or something that app developers need to change? Thanks for any help.

Halo is a recent port to KitKat since pa hasn't implemented their official halo yet. Operability should get better as development continues.

Might check out this little app:

@jwhyte Thanks I figured it was a development issue. @es0tericcha0s I hadn't heard of this, looks great!

Yea, pretty cool idea. I didn't end up using it very much because I prefer the banner notifications that are an option with the app: LockerPro Lockscreen as they are less intrusive for every day use.

Any way to get Emoji on stock ROMs without a 3rd party SMS app?

Running Synergy and love it.. just miss having emoji. Any way to get it back without a 3rd party SMS app? I dont like 3rd party because the darn LED doesn't work right.
Thanks.
I was wondering the same.

sub'd. would love to have this feature, but I'm loving the stock sms
I know Jelly Bean got it. I'm on AOKP right now but I can't seem to get the emoji dictionary to stick :/ I think emojis is a 4.1 thing

nah jellybean has fake emojis. they suck. Wait till CM10 merges the emoji mms apk, it works well on there. ( had it on my gnex )

Well thats your opinion but coming from a long time iOS user they aren't that bad. They're smaller and black and sometimes they're kinda hard to figure out what the emoji is but for the most part its pretty good

Not with the stock Samsung MMS app, but I believe the stock Google MMS app supports emoji, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728308. Personally, I use the blacked out version from page 7 of the same thread, http://rootzwiki.com/topic/29460-inverted-inverted-g-apps-update-7-5-new-playstore-ver-3713-and-mms-app/. It's a bit quirky but certainly better than the Samsung MMS app.
any update on this? I actually really like the Touchwiz mms app haha but when i'm using something like instagram and someone comments with emojis, i can't see them.
EDIT: Found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792745 gonna give it a shot
bumping this since I just found this. anyone tried it?

yep glad it's out but it's pretty broken, at least for me anyway.. can't find friends through twitter or contacts, uploads don't work sometimes, getting a lot of random FCs

I also am seeing similar issues with the Twitter/Contacts issue. An update was just released, but did not fix that issue for me. It seems everyone I have seen that has had the issue is running an AOSP ROM... hmm.
Gingerbread sure misses out on a lot of the hot apps these days. I wonder why they made it 4.0+?
They are definitely using APIs that are available only in 4.0+

It is uber buggy, has evidentally crashed Twitters API, isn't posting to Twitter, can't use front camera and crashes constantly.
Puh-lease!
I've also noticed the bugs and blatantly missing features like searching for users. Hopefully they fix this quick. It was definitely rushed to the market.

Crashing on my i777 running AOKP, only when I try to make a video. Works just fine on my Nexus 7 running rasbeanjelly tho.

Messaging App With Quick Reply Like Stock?

Are there any text messaging apps with a quick reply feature like in stock that I don't need root to install? I have an HTC One and came from a Galaxy Nexus and miss that feature so much. I've tried some other apps, but nothing seems to have the ability to swipe down on a notification in the notification bar and reply like that without having to go into the app. The closest I've seen is the constant notification quick message thing in Handcent.

SMS App

For those of us who really don't like SMS in Hangouts for whatever reason, what SMS app are you using and what is one of the best features on it?
Thanks
Tried go sms, handcent and chomp. Don't like any of them. Would love to see the cm, or similar, messaging app as a stand alone app for all devices.

Yeah. I've tired them and feel too bloated. Something minimal with a couple of keybuseful features is what I'm after.

What do you mean?
It should work as a default sms app.
(My Nexus 5 should be here any minute so I can't test it with it, but on my HTC One it did)

It needs to be updated to 4.4 which they said is in the works.

Does anyone know if it's possible to just download an apk of the stock jelly bean SMS app?
That is a good idea! Have the jelly bean SMS app on kit Kat! I have a Galaxy nexus rooted so I can probably just make a back up of my SMS app. I'll try it...

I'm not actually sure if it will work. It might not be compatible with 4.4 or it might be glitchy. In any case it would prob be best to just stick to hangouts. Not sure though. Anyone have any input if this will work?
8sms. Best sms app. Looks like stock, fast, and quickreply from notification shade.

not mentioned yet so I'll recommend it - sliding messaging... you do have to pay for it but it's very unique and quite a nice app

I've installed 8SMS, set it to Standalone Mode and disabled Hangouts in Settings/Apps.
Strangely, under Settings/Wireless & networks/Default SMS, 8SMS doesn't show up. I'll be asking someone to text me soon to test that everything is working as it should be. I'll report back.
Edit: Running in Standalone mode didn't work but as soon as i deselected it i could receive SMS. Unfortunately sent messages aren't being received so i'm going back to using Hangouts for now.
I had no idea that Textra and 8sms existed until now (and I've been doing the Android thing since donut). I've been using Hangouts or the CM app, but for non rooted phones I could never find a messaging app I liked. These are beautiful and I'll be putting one on friends' phones to replace the (usually) lacking SMS stock apps.

I'm really hoping the CM stock messaging app can be ported to KitKat. I've never understood the issue people have with it. It looks great, and it functions well.

Good calendar app instead of Google Calendar?

I am so used to the calendar app from my Samsung SII (E4GT) that I never really used google calendar on my phone and on my N5 it just stinks. On my tablet google calendar is fine and so are the widgets but on the phone not so much. Worst thing is not having a nice month view that lists items instead of just showing colors.
So what is a good alternative? I only use google calendar so I am not syncing with other email services and I have a shared google calendar with the wife so need to keep that in one place.
Thanks
I use Neat Calendar widget with the stock calendar, works well for me.

Where did you get Any.cal. The play store links seems down, i hadn't luck with their community either.
I signed up for their beta a while ago on the any.do website. You can try there and see if they still have it going.

At the very bottom is a let me know when it arrives. That is what I did and I got the invite later. Much later though.
Hi, friends!
I am using amazing Pimlical Advanced Calendar/PIM (I can not post the link to this app due to the rules of XDA forum) . I have use for years DateBk5 from same developer on my Palm.
Also I use Next Launcher 3D with its calendar widget.
My question is: how can I force calendar widget open Pimlical Advanced Calendar/PIM instead pf stock calendar?
The"Clear defaults" in stock calendar is greyed and I can set Pimlical Advanced Calendar/PIM as my default calendar application.
Any hint, please.
