SMS App - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For those of us who really don't like SMS in Hangouts for whatever reason, what SMS app are you using and what is one of the best features on it?
Thanks

Tried go sms, handcent and chomp. Don't like any of them. Would love to see the cm, or similar, messaging app as a stand alone app for all devices.

Yeah. I've tired them and feel too bloated. Something minimal with a couple of keybuseful features is what I'm after.

Sliding Messaging Pro has been my go to SMS app for KitKat, feels like it belongs on the OS.

Have you tried Textra?

What do you mean?
It should work as a default sms app.
(My Nexus 5 should be here any minute so I can't test it with it, but on my HTC One it did)

It needs to be updated to 4.4 which they said is in the works.

Does anyone know if it's possible to just download an apk of the stock jelly bean SMS app?

That is a good idea! Have the jelly bean SMS app on kit Kat! I have a Galaxy nexus rooted so I can probably just make a back up of my SMS app. I'll try it...

I'm not actually sure if it will work. It might not be compatible with 4.4 or it might be glitchy. In any case it would prob be best to just stick to hangouts. Not sure though. Anyone have any input if this will work?

8sms. Best sms app. Looks like stock, fast, and quickreply from notification shade.

not mentioned yet so I'll recommend it - sliding messaging... you do have to pay for it but it's very unique and quite a nice app

I've installed 8SMS, set it to Standalone Mode and disabled Hangouts in Settings/Apps.
Strangely, under Settings/Wireless & networks/Default SMS, 8SMS doesn't show up. I'll be asking someone to text me soon to test that everything is working as it should be. I'll report back.
Edit: Running in Standalone mode didn't work but as soon as i deselected it i could receive SMS. Unfortunately sent messages aren't being received so i'm going back to using Hangouts for now.

I had no idea that Textra and 8sms existed until now (and I've been doing the Android thing since donut). I've been using Hangouts or the CM app, but for non rooted phones I could never find a messaging app I liked. These are beautiful and I'll be putting one on friends' phones to replace the (usually) lacking SMS stock apps.

I use Disa.im which combines SMS/MMS and Whatsapp. It has a very clean interface and support for group conversations.

I'm really hoping the CM stock messaging app can be ported to KitKat. I've never understood the issue people have with it. It looks great, and it functions well.

TW features on CM10/AOKP

Just wondering.. How difficult would it be to incorporate the swipe right to call/swipe left to text feature from TW roms to CM10/AOKP? Please don't kill me for asking, I'm just curious.

Have to admit this was one of the best features of TouchWiz
I knew I wasn't the only one who missed this from TW roms

I knew I wasn't the only one who missed that feature. I've look everywhere for a hint of it being ported. I think you would have to port contacts, messaging, and dialer for it. Sounds difficult!

Huh? U guys must've missed a setting, because I have exdialer and from both the call log and contacts page I can swipe left/right to call and text
As for.messaging, exdialer doesn't have a messaging app component, so up until recently I've been using gosms. I have since found the cm10 theme Xperia s 2.0 which makes the stock sms app look AMAZING and have been using that

I meant the contacts app. Not the contacts within exdialer. I flashed embryo and had it for a couple days. I'm stuck between aokp because of the rezound mod or embryo for the swipe feature.

I tried using exdialer for a day, it just didn't feel right for me. Though I will keep an eye on it just it case the developers develop a similar messaging app. As of now I'm on embryo because my earphones broke.

Emoji keyboard

I think this belongs here under apps but does anybody know of a quality emoji keyboard? I'm running aokp and now that I can see them I would like to use them also. So far the only one I have really found is multi ling keyboard and I don't really like it much.

Not built in the keyboard, but GoSMS offers emojis.
I use it without problems (Except for the new ones iOS just got with their last update)

I'd mainly like them for twitter. I did like how aokp jb had an add emoji option in the options menu for messaging though.

but i', found a guide for modify mms.apk ... modified all things and the stock app run better (finally i've found why sms split count 70-80 char instead 160) and like i want only 1 thingh miss.. limit conversation to show last 100sms whitout deleting them... or my gf conversation (8000+ sms) fc the app...
there is a way to do this?
That's the only thing I miss from my iphone was not having to deal with character limits what app will give me this? Do any have a setting so the iphone thinks it's coming from another imesage account so I can still text all of the other folks I haven't been able to convert to android?

Messaging App With Quick Reply Like Stock?

Are there any text messaging apps with a quick reply feature like in stock that I don't need root to install? I have an HTC One and came from a Galaxy Nexus and miss that feature so much. I've tried some other apps, but nothing seems to have the ability to swipe down on a notification in the notification bar and reply like that without having to go into the app. The closest I've seen is the constant notification quick message thing in Handcent.

Messaging apps and HALO

I was wondering if anyone found a good messaging app that worked with Halo. So far hangouts is the only one that works reliably for me. AOSP messaging works until I click a contact thread and it switches into the full app. Textra and 8sms open the full app when I try to open them through halo. Oddly enough other messaging programs like kik work fine. Is this just the state of halo on kitkat roms, or something that app developers need to change? Thanks for any help.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Halo is a recent port to KitKat since pa hasn't implemented their official halo yet. Operability should get better as development continues.

Yea, pretty cool idea. I didn't end up using it very much because I prefer the banner notifications that are an option with the app: LockerPro Lockscreen as they are less intrusive for every day use.
