Swapping motherboards, keep root data and apps easy? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a gs3 that I rooted back on ICS, and now my micro usb charging port is wearing out. I have a broken screen gs3 that may be on jellybean. Was thinking of swapping motherboards since the port it's attached to the board. Is there an easy way to not lose my data? Was wondering if I could just do a nandroid restore after I rooted the new board? Not sure what all is stored on the actual board. Maybe someone could fill me in on that as well.

I don't know about that, and I'm not sure if you're interested, but I just today ordered qi wireless charger and receiver tag. May be a whole lot easier

Well if you have the skill to replace the Mainboard..OK, as long as your broken screen phone is not on 4.3, you should able to take a nandroid backup and then restore it back to the new hardware. If your nandroid image included root, then you should have root on the new hardware, you don't have to root the new hardware.

What do you mean by "broken?" Do you mean that you can only use the USB connector for charging?
No, it's broken it won't charge or connect to the computer it was broken when I bought it if I play with the cord it says it's charging icon pops up but you can see it drop while it's plugged in that tells me that it's broken i may get it fixed one day but until then I just mess around with it its still a decent phone to play with + I don't have my computer either its in the shop being repaired.

LOL. He knows it's broken. He's asking if there is a way to root without USB.
OP
There is no way that I know of to root without a USB connection. Sorry man. I bet you could have a decent repair shop replace it for under 50 bucks though.
I was reading an found you could root froyo can't find the link though in xda app supposedly you modify recovery and flash kernel for froyo but I can't figure it out does any know what I'm asking hope I'm making sense

Your still gonna need the USB working tough. To modify recovery you need either ADB or ROOT. So like I said not gonna happen. Sorry

Has any one perhaps used this app
Essentially ist an app that allows you to back up and restore your root access therefore allowing you to take updates over the air and then afterwards allowing to restore your root. I saw a couple videos on you tube but they were all dated months ago I was wondering if any one had any comments or feedback based on there own experience using this tool cause in theory it sounds pretty awesome

i have it, but i haven't needed it. i don't foresee any OTA's from big red (verizon) anytime soon so this isn't that necessary. i pretty much just click survival mode on my superuser app that tries to keep root even over updates. i suggest unchecking automatic updates on your phone, and read up on any updates from big red before ever actually updating.
I've used it before and it works perfect, you just need to remember where it puts your protected su backup on your Internal sdcard and make a copy and put it on your external sd. That way if your internal memory gets wiped then you reinsert the su file back onto the internal SD in the same location it originally came from.

It works fine. I just used it to update my nexus 7 to 4.2.2.

Hdmi issues

Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster haha!
Well recently I don't know what happened but for some reason my photon (stock rom + root) is not supporting hdmi anymore. Before I could plug it into my appradio or flat screen with a micro hdmi cable and the display would be mirrored. Now, when I plug it in, the screen will rotate horizontally, but that's it, no mirror display, or even a signal on the other displays. I checked the cable by plugging in my tablet and it showed up just fine.
Anyone have any thoughts on a possible fix for this?

So no new app installs? Anything else change on the phone?
Can you do a backup and hard reset, just to rule it out?
I'm not too sure as to how to do that with this phone. I did the one click root method to get my SU fix. Number one use of hdmi is my main source of entertainment from my appradio

So after you rooted it stopped working...?
I'm confused. Please provide more detail.
Either way, I would be curious if a hard reset fixes it.
I've been rooted for a few months now, just earlier this week I plugged the phone in and nothing happenned. So I tried it on my big screen ans same thing, the screen just rotates horizontally and doesn't send video out. However I plugged in my tablet on both the radio and the head unit with that same hdmi cable and everything showed up clear. Seems strange that this happens all of a sudden. I use a air blower at 50 psi to blow out the port and the plug to see if it was just dirty, but nope.

What was the result of a hard reset? That would rule out any software issues.
That's my issue, I don't know how to do a hard reset on the photon :/
Sent from my XT897 using Tapatalk 2
So i figured it out, did a hard reset and nothing. Just noticed now that for some reason my bluetooth headset wont stream the phone call? Wierd.
Sent from my XT897 using Tapatalk 2
Well, in TWRP it's really stupid simple...
I assume you don't have TWRP, so I guess FXZ is your only option to hard reset? Maybe there's some way to do it with the stock recovery, but I have no clue how.
Are you sure you hard reset it? The phone was wiped, started fresh like it was day 1 with none of your info on it?
Maybe you should just take the device to your provider's store and see if there is something actually wrong with it... since I can't see the device or what you're doing to it, all I can do is speculate.
I took it to my local radioshack and they gave me a pamphlet with a number to call :/

Since when is Radio Shack your provider?
(For example) If you have insurance through Sprint, take it to a Sprint store - which is a repair store - look on their site to find one. Not all stores are repair facilities.
Well you see.......long story short, I used to be an assistant manager for one back in january, that's when I got my photon q and their insurance for free. I've gone to all the corporate sprint stores and all of them want a $35 down payment since I don't have sprints insurance.

They offer their own insurance...? I guess it's not very useful tho? That's unfortunate, but I guess that's why it's free....
Its $10 a month for customers but for employees we got it free with phone activation

Went to the corporate store and they were nice enough to just swap out the device since they had a large inventory of it. Brought it home, did the ota update, unlocked it, and installed twrp recovery and super user. Plus got my hdmi back! I asked about the jb 4.2 update and the rep just said he hadn't heard of anything......so now I'm just looking around for a good stable rom

Very poor DBm, asu and WiFi signal after JTAG service.

I just got my phone back from mobiletechvideos JTAG service. Since then, my phone struggles to hold WiFi and 3g. It very rarely pulls 4g. I have tried a factory reset. Also restored my IMEI backup just in case. I have an extra micro sim arriving today. I'm just wondering if I could be missing something simple or is my phone royally screwed?

Sounds like your radio.
They probably updated your baseband to MF1, I'd try to use mb1 firmware to see if that fixes your reception problem.

Thanks for the fast response! I flashed the MB1 firmware and still have poor signal. I'm starting to get depressed as this went from the best phone I've ever owned to the worst.

I did take the phone apart and found that the WiFi connection was loose. I corrected that. I started the phone back up and held the Sim card down in the slot while booting and the phone miraculously got 41asu.....for about 5 minutes and now its holding at a steady 2asu. So, would there definitely be something wrong with the Sim card? Or could the Sim port be going as well? Is there a way to test the Sim connectivity in the phone settings?

The lower the asu the better, in contrast to a higher dbm is a better signal.
2 asu is a pretty strong signal, you should be around -80 dbm.
Edit; Nevermind I mixed it up, a higher asu is better. I still think it's radio related though, but changing your sim card is an easy potential fix.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Well....sim card didn't work. Next I'm going to Odin back to pure stock and see if that helps. I'm starting to think it may be something in the NV items or hardware related. Hope I'm wrong though.

Hi David,
Often times when devices become bricked, it results in your NV items being damaged and causes this problem. Here is a guide that highlights this issue, and will tell you how to remedy the situation.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32397-tutorial-imei-backup-nv-with-qpst-us-variants/"
ugh. I really dont want to go messing around with the NV items if that is the case. Im in the process of flashing with ODIN now. I'll update if that works or not.
What is your IEM Showing?
If its been erased, then ODIN to stock firmware probably won;t fix that,
but, have you check your mobile network setting to see if you are on the correct network?
If you are with Verizon it should be set to CDMA, not GSM.

Software is not intermittent. Hardware can be. You may have a broken or loose antenna cable or connector inside the phone.

Found it!!!!! I took the phone apart one last time and found that one of the antenna contacts was bent and not touching the backplate. I bent it back and I'm getting perfect signal. Thank you guys for the input and feedback!

Hi David,
I'm glad to hear you resolved this issue. This is quite surprising as the S3 is relatively easy to work on internally and we had never had this issue after working on one. I'll take note of this in case it's ever observed in the future. In the mean time, anyone ever having a questions regarding their order, just call us at 657-444-JTAG. Rock on buddy!

[Q]Dual/Flashing Froyo Kd1 and Faux Ginger T759

Okay, so we have gingerbread on the sidekick 4G, and it isn't quite yet a daily driver. I miss some features of Froyo, but crave gingerbread. Would it be possible to create a system that can backup one ROM and reflash the other, being able to switch between the two, such as Froyo in the morning and ginger in the evening?
Sent from my SGH-T759 using xda app-developers app
Sure, but you'll have to make a new recovery that will work with both, the most current recovery for this phone will only work with froyo builds
Oh and I'm referring to just creating and restoring nandroids, a true dual boot bootloader is out of the question
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I was thinking something along the lines of an app that could backup the entire phone as an odin file, or maybe a tool that can convert nandroids to odin and flash...being compatible with froyo as well
Also, would you know how to solder a new usb port to this thing? mine is on its way out.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is such a program but my knowledge of Samsung is limited and off hand I can't think of one
As far as soldering goes its not too hard to do, so long as you are at least half way decent at soldering. The new port should run about $5 and while you're at of you may consider doing the unbrickable mod
This however you need to be a bit more skilled as its extra fine soldering with a lot of opportunities for messing up
Best of luck!
