Will give it a test run.
After using this on my phone, I'm excited to see this for my tablet as well. So far the only thing that I have found not working was the mounting the SD card through the recovery doesn't seem to work, it was connected to the computer when I mounted it but my computer couldn't see it. It also seems that the recovery is a bit slower on my tablet than on my phone, d2spr, though it might just be the tablet itself.

Ah okay, well so far that's the only bug in the recovery I noticed, and I wouldn't have even noticed it if I had remembered to put the kitkat gapps on my device before wiping it. Haha
Really nice job though, I'm glad you brought it over since I've had issues with plain cwm in the past and twrp doesn't seem to be getting updated at the moment I thank you for bringing this to my tablet.
Thank you so much for this nice tool and give us choices. I flashed it and the UI is just beautiful. Now I'll go test all its functions.
:good:
Nice

i feel a bit silly but the file in the tf700t download folder is a .img and i can't figure out how to flash it...
Thank you so much Philz!

Write this in the terminal:
su
dd if=/sdcard/download/philz_touch_6.08.9-tf700t.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
Reboot your tablet and that's it.
You could rename as you wish, also, I'm running CM 11 so the file directory might be different.
Or you can flash the zip that lj made.

Yeah I am as well curious, though it seems that if there are drops it would suggest that data is available... I assume this is the build that cvpcs posted about having shaky 4g? (And 3g it seems)
Please pardon the noobish question but is there a way to push these files with terminal emulator? I haven't been able to get ADB to work. I have it and the SDK installed but when i try to push something it says ADB is not a recognized command

Sure..just skip the first two ADB commands (make sure you have the files on your EMMC/internal storage). Start with the "su" command to get root and follow the rest of the directions.
Hello data is not dropping for me at all. Actually better signal then stock touchwiz. I recommend flashing this and trying.

Thank you very much. I am almost scared to ask the next question but when plugging my phone in to the pc i get the window that pops up and lets me go to Card or Phone. Obviously emmc/internal storage would mean for me to copy these files to Phone but I also am rooted and have CWM installed. If I did a nandroid right now before installing CM9, would I be able to restore it if needed after installing the Kexec touch CWM?
Thanks again for all help.
Yeah, I would also like to know what the LTE situation is with this. Not really pressed, though, as it's early in development. Great to see work like this happening.
Any chance for a CM10 build?

My data shut off after about a half hour. Now I can't get it past No Service and Roaming (No SMS/MMS, Voice, nothing); just a heads up for those who want a preemptive taste of CM9.

The EMMC is the internal storage. Just place the files on the root of your internal storage (not in any folders)

Philz you beauty! Welcome to the P5100 land! Finally something to look forward to in this otherwise zzzz P5100 forum. I was really planning to sell off this tablet due to the lack of top notch recoveries and kernels. Now I have eternal hope because Philz our saviour is here!
People, you just have to try his Kernels. He is a legend! Just check out the Note N7000 forums if you want to check out his fabulous work and fan following
About touch:
1- when you touch a menu to select: is the selection precise and working as expected
2- bottom virtual buttons: do they work as expected?
3- If it is slow, try to reduce the Scroll Sensitivity setting and reduce menu height. Play with both to find a sweet point¨
Try to describe what happens with precision. A video would even be better, so that I can get what you mean. I won't be able to help much as I do not have the device, without these
Here are the screenshots. The touch works perfect. There's no lag whatsoever. The bottom navigation buttons work as they should. Hopefully we'll be gifted with a Kernel soon
This works great on my 5113. The Aroma file manager seems really useful. I wasn't totally sure how to set it up so I'll write the steps here in case anyone else is wondering.
I downloaded the zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646108
You can "install" the zip file from recovery which really just runs the file manager. It doesn't really install anything. When you exit you go back to recovery.
However, if you want to use it from inside PhilZ's recovery do this:
Go to /sdcard/clockworkmod
Create a directory called .aromafm
Copy the zip file you downloaded into that directory
Change the name of the zip file to aromafm.zip
Now you can use the Aroma FM menu item from the recovery to launch the file manager. The first time you run it from a new location you get the "help" overlay screen. I did the above steps in the file manager itself. Pretty cool. And having a terminal from inside recovery is great when you need to fix something and aren't at home.

Big thanks for the screen shots. At least I can see how the display is looking
I decided on purpose to not enlarge the bottom buttons as I thought it would be harder to use them if spread along all the width. Is it ok?
As for menu toggle options not being completely right aligned, it is a limitation in current stock CWM, and I feel no need to increase the buffer to make it right align

Yes, the touch works perfect. Flashed 2-3 ROM's just for fun for testing it. The double tap and other shortcuts (the ones i checked) are all cool.
And yes the bottom navigation buttons are also good at this size. Infact they're perfect for the wider screen. Cheers!

Actually, I may have found a problem related to the 5113. I have installed some kernels through this recovery but when I went to install the latest CM nightly I get an assert failure where it is looking for p5110 or p5113. I've installed many of these in the past. I may revert to old CWM and see if it works, but I feel it must be related to this recovery, perhaps because it doesn't know I have a 5113?
Update: Reverting to normal stock worked.

It's under META-INF\com\android\metadata

Hi there are a few version of the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 that have no support for a custom recovery.
Source files have been found and are ready to be worked with.
The devices we would like to bring support to are the:
T330NU source file:
http://www.4shared.com/zip/UG28maH2ce/SM-T330NU_NA_KK_Opensource.html
T335K source file:
http://www.4shared.com/zip/9Y4qzw1zce/SM-T335K_KK_Opensource.html
T335L source file:

T337a source file:
http://www.4shared.com/zip/21kf9dZYce/SM-T337A_NA_KK_Opensource.html
Boot.img dumped from device T330NU:
http://www.4shared.com/file/nOAtJQbCba/boot.html
Recovery.img dumped from device T330NU:
http://www.4shared.com/file/mSkFIM0Bce/recovery.html
If ANYONE is willing or knows someone who could be willing to port a custom recovery to these devices it would be greatly appreciated if you could pass on the message and spread the word. If we all do work together we should be able to get this done.
There are many people who are willing to test the final work. Thanks in advance.
Hey, I am dedicated to get a recovery for this device also. I am pretty good with computers but have never worked on a recovery project. I do have Linux and can help if needed on anything.

In terminal, type su dd if=/dev/emmc/"boot partition" of=/sdcard/recovery.img
I think you need to enter after su. It will save it to your sd. This is assuming root. You enter your boot partition in the quotes. Use this to find your partitions.

Thanks for the help I think I understand. I have terminal ready and the app installed. Just not sure which partition is the one to fill in the quotations in the terminal.
I'm attaching pictures if that helps.
Also I'm sure I do not include the actual quotes when typing in terminal just to save myself from confusion. I do have root by the way

These two represent your recovery and boot partitions. So in the quotes you'll put the mmcblk0p15 for recovery.img.
I found that pulling the recovery is that exact code, whereas pulling the boot was a different code, but found easily on the internet. I got the recovery easy, the boot was a little more work, but did get it.

Think I am not typing it exactly how it needs to be. Even tried copy and pasting. So close but yet so far lol. I really think we have all been making progress the last few days. This would help if I could get it to work. Would be useful and handy to have a backup for each device variation.
Pic did not upload for me the first time. Backup did not work yet. I must be typing or copy and pasting wrong
I'm trying to remember how I did it. I believe you open terminal, type su then press enter, then type the rest. Let me do it again and see what my steps were.

Ok, I'm sorry. The code I gave you is actually for the boot.img not recovery. Here is the right code. Sorry again.
Type it exactly as I did and you'll find the backup on your sdcard (not external). I actually found the correct code in the 7.7" tab thread. Lol http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1540641

Ok I have got both recovery and boot.img backed up/pulled. Finally lol thanks a lot
I think we have most of the necessary files to get the job done. If you say you have got you boot.img and recovery backed up and so do I. We have source files also. All we need now is for the recovery to be compiled. For a skilled experienced developer to finish up what we started probably would not be too hard. If only we had someone to really take the time with us with some of the next key steps. I am looking up guides and resources all over the Internet but nothing concrete to get the job done ?

Yeh, I hear that. Like I said before, I've got my buddies looking at it, but these devices that they don't own aren't a priority for them. I don't feel right bugging them about it every day. I'll see if there's anything I can find. I'm not a developer and get lost with code, but guides I can help to find if you have the build environment.

Hi there are a few version of the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 that have no support for a custom recovery.
If ANYONE is willing or knows someone who could be willing to port a custom recovery to these devices it would be greatly appreciated if you could pass on the message and spread the word. If we all do work together we should be able to get this done.
There are many people who are willing to test the final work. Thanks in advance.

TWRP RECOVERY - 2.8.4.0 Rev 2- XOLO Q3000 with OTG support
Procedure to follow
download the recovery.
then flash recovery using sptools /flashify /mobileuncle tool using these guides.
OR
if ur using any custom recovery from this thread then
visit this thread to get a flashable recovery which can be flashed from current recovery.
Just reboot to recovery for confirmation.
This is working recovery - tested by me.
flashed JB & KK rom.
Backup and restore without any issues.
OTG is also working properly - FAT/FAT32 formatted USB drives only.
As u all know our device has 6mb recovery partition size.
So while porting i need to trim the actual recovery.
U will not be able to partition ur sd card using this recovery.
Also u wont be able to root using this recovery.
For above issues we have better solutions.
Try and report.
For official change logs, see here:

Sir all themes working well. i just uploaded dark theme.
u can use rev 1 themes also on rev 2.
working on TWRP 2.8.5.0 so forgot to upload other themes.
u can download from here.
Eventually i increase the action message font and i forgot which ui.xml i used, still searching for it.
TWRP 2.8.5.0 booting but cant flash any ROM but recovery flash, wiping is working normally.
If u can help me with that i can try it.
Thanks.
I would love to see u pressed thanks button sometimes.
just wondering if the rev 2 recovery.img file can be placed inside your TWRP_2.8.2.0_Q3000 play.zip file replacing the twrp v2.8.2.0 recovery.img there.
will flashing that give twrp v2.8.4.0 rev 2 play theme? just a noob-guess! . btw, the ui.zip inside the dark theme zip file of twrp v2.8.4.0 rev 2 is pretty big (8,221,418 bytes).

Sir first flash the recovery with dark theme (flashble zip is attached so u can flash from any recovery)
Download play theme zip from above given link.
Rename this zip to ui.zip.
Now copy and replace in ur
Internal storage/twrp/theme/ folder.
Or replace in dark themed recovery.zip inside
Emmc/twrp/theme. Folder
In both cases u will find ui.zip already there u need to just replace.
I am in transit so cant upload now.
Wil upload after 9 pm only.
Thank you

tried this, and boy, was i in for some shock! think i'll let the screenshots speak for themselves....
TWRP v2.8.4.0 Rev.1 (2) brought woes.
TWRP v2.8.2.0 brought back relief! :good:
mounting usb otg in TWRP v2.8.4.0 Rev.1 (2) is cumbersome. no way to get back to the previous screen after mounting, except by clicking the back key of the device. the back arrow at the top left does not work.
and i couldn't find the usb otg drive listed anywhere (as opposed to the case of TWRP v2.8.2.0, where you see it listed everywhere). others can try this recovery and correct me if i'm wrong.
more importantly, it'd help the dev do things better/properly. (although i took a screenshot it doesn't seem to have worked.) the device is back on 'twrp v2.8.2.0 play edition by avi3230'.
not sure when i can test further, but i'll be willing to help when possible. in the meantime avi3230 can concentrate on quality rather than quantity, imho. thanks, anyway.
@m0han
Yeah u r correct sir.
First its my mistake - as i used the zip of rev 1 and i replaced the zip and not the recovery in flashble zip so u see its rev 1.
U cant see some buttons cause the theme is meant for rev 2.
In each update of TWRP there is change in backup folder (which i cant define) so it wont detect previous backups.
u need to manually move the backup to respective folder when u upgrade.
Dont worry usb otg works properly in rev 2. u need to use back button to go back. I already made a video of that but not uploaded.
This happens because no one has even tested the recovery. There are more than 70 downloads of the img file but no one even reported.
Sorry for the inconvenience caused.
I am also learning by mistake, hope u understand what i am saying.

that's sad. but, i think i know the reason - and i've stated it before. you're dishing out stuff (even partly cooked) in such quick succession that people can't even decide what to go with. i'm sure you yourself don't get time to test your work - you don't have the device with you full-time. and, frankly, the responses to your releases show that your users are not entirely satisfied. if you're keen to do a better/proper job, you may consider my advice suggestion in the proper spirit - "concentrate on quality rather than quantity". i notice that quite a few others have also opined so.

also, the issue of errors/bugs.....
lastly, just want to make a subtle observation: although i was the first among 70+users to give you a detailed feedback, which you found 'correct', you haven't 'thanks'ed me. i usually press thanks for work that has benefitted me as well as the user community for any device or some post that throws light on a matter of general/popular interest. so, continue your good work and the thanks will gush forth. just don't keep looking out for it. don't thank me just 'cos i said this; you know i'm not the kind who solicits thanks.
@m0han
Thanks for trying the recovery and pointing out the mistakes.
Links are corrected with proper recovery version.
I am just trying to learn things here nothing else so mistakes will happen from my side, i apologize for it.
I am just trying my level best.
The sad part is users only replay when they are not satisfied.
Right now i cant thank u cause my today's quota of thanks is already over.

just go easy on releasing and hard on learning. forget thanking me. :good:.
a couple of suggestions:
1. provide md5 checksums. (i got d9e07dfe97cc26795f1f5f374df89ed0 for the latest one.) would help distinguish the various versions, esp. if there's no change of filename
2. please provide screenshots - at least the ones of the troublesome screens, if not exactly like mine.
"in each update of TWRP there is change in backup folder" - are backup location and usb implementation hard-coded in the recovery? i ask again what i asked here: what could happen if the (rev 2) recovery.img file is placed inside your TWRP_2.8.2.0_Q3000 play.zip file replacing the img file there and flashed? will that give me Q3000 backup folder and the usb otg implementation? . these are noob thoughts, but, i await your answer.
hi @avi3230, i've just sent you a pm. please respond. thanks.. posted in (common) recovery collection thread.

the 'TWRP 2.8.4.0 rev 2.img' from this op has md5 c5d180bc6cdde26541421a220e1a37d9.
the 'recovery.img' inside the '2.8.4.0 Rev 2 Play theme' linked to here has md5 c3b809c3081cd04b4a77446fe69db590.
there is a mismatch. which one is the proper fully-working 'TWRP 2.8.4.0 Rev 2'?
@avi3230 / somebody, please confirm which file (img or zip) to use to avoid troubles. thanks.
None of the two files have any trouble.
Using this recovery, it's working fine, thanks ?
Hey guys, I need a little help getting the Custom Recovery TWRP to work with terminal emulator.
I have the Asus Transformer Pad TF300T(WIFI Only)
Android Version: 4.2.1
Build Number: 10.6.1.27.5
Bootloader: Unlocked with Asus Unlock Tool(Restart with small print in top left corner "This device is unlocked")
Root: Rooted with KingoRoot
My problem is everytime I open up the Terminal Emulator(The reason for using this method is because I dont have a USB cable to connect to the computer) I type in
SU (a little popup shows it granted superuser access)
I then type in
dd if=/removeable/microsd/twrp.blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
It then tells me
/removeable/microsd/twrp.blob: cannot open for read: No such file or directory
Full Terminal Emulator DOS screen:
[email protected]: / $ SU
[email protected]: / # dd if=/removeable/microsd/twrp.blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
/removeable/microsd/twrp.blob: cannot open for read: No such file or directory
I have the file renamed to TWRP.blob. I also have a TWRP.img that I've tried and its in the root of my sd card. I've even tried formatting my sd card for android because before this i never used it for anything.
Any help would be appreciated.

Download the SuperSU (Chainfire) from Playstore. Then you will get access to the Terminal Emulator.
PS: Please download Kang TWRP 2.8.7.2 here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/transformer-tf300t/development/recovery-twrp-t3046479. This is the right TWRP version you need for both KatKiss Rom N7.1.1 and MM 6.0.1. There is also an install instruction for using Terminal.

I think the communication problem might be your SD card. The format must be FAT 32. Either reformat it on your PC or use a new one.
The terminal code is "dd if=/sdcard/foo.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4", "foo" stands for "twrp_tf300t_kang_2.8.7.2_signed."
This command also expects the file "twrp_tf300t_kang_2.8.7.2_signed.image" to be on /sdcard.
Take care that the terminal can communicate with your SD card. That means the command has to be written very very correctly. No capital letters for instant.

NO!!! Just stay on 3.0.2. You are fine with that version. It's the latest released for this tablet and sooner or later those still on lj's kang version will have to update anyway. ..
If amazing master wizard Tim still keeps cranking out roms this tablet was never supposed to see.
You're good, you did good, but get the heck yourself a USB cable so that you have fastboot access. I hate to watch trapeze artists working without a net!!!

I am sure.
There is nothing magically different or better about the Kang TWRP. It supports the dock SD which the official TWRP never did, but that's a feature I have used maybe twice in all that time I used it. Other than that there are some additional reboot options and GUI changes if I remember correctly, but the core is just TWRP. I think at the time lj made the recovery the offical TWRP had a bug with the f2fs conversion - can't quite remember - but for a while it was the go-to recovery for both the TF300 and TF700.
Don't get me wrong - it's a perfectly fine recovery and for all I know still supports even Nougat roms. There is no reason for you to change it if you stay on the same rom. But there's also no reason for somebody who flashed a 3.+ version already to downgrade to 2.8. Documented by the fact that Bamablood94 flashed Katkiss successfully.

I am now running nougat 7.1.1 from katkiss using the twrp 3.0.2.0 using the TWRP Manager app and also downloaded the mini GApps. I didnt realize that was something I also had to install until i realized there was no play stor or any other google related apps but I have invested in a 5 dollar usb data cable from ebay which should come in sometime this week. My other problem now seems to be that this thing dont like running too many apps in the background and when you first start up a program it likes to lag it a tad bit untill it runs a little smoother. I appreciate the help guys.
Welcome to the wonderful world of the Transformer, my friend. If you expect this tablet to run anywhere close to the performance of any current device, you will be disappointed.
Asus thought up a genius form factor and then ruined it by crippling it by not giving it enough ram and a cheap, slow memory chip on top of it.
You have to go easy on this baby.
Turn off automatic updates in the Play Store.
Turn off automatic updates and syncing for as many apps as you can stand.
If you don't use an app, get rid of it.
Do NOT use the Facebook app. It's a piece of cra** anyway and really hard on resources
In the 700 forum Tim posted some fine tuning tips a while back. If I find it, I'll add the link later
Develop a good backup/restore routine (e.g Titanium Backup) and then format data every 3 months or so - depending on how much you use the tablet.
If you haven't, convert /data to f2fs. That really helps on this tablet let.
Enjoy

The tips are in a TF700 thread, but the two tablets are almost identical. They should work for your tablet as well

BTW, the same tips put Tim in a TF300T thread as well:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71094836&postcount=615
To my opinion the best performance with KatKiss N7 on the TF300T will be reached with a RAM use of around 65%. That means to keep the amount of apps as low as possible. In my case up to 45 apps, but mostly less. Always have an eye on piggy apps.
I appreciate the help guys I don't use the tablet much since I have an Asus phone but I install the zenui launcher and to my surprise it seemed to help the "lag" just a bit. Again I appreciate the help I don't get on xda often but when I need help this is my go to place.
