how to restore backups after new version - Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G

hi, i want to move from cm 10.2.x to one of the cm 11 nightlies. i backup my phone quite often from cwm, however i never had to use the backup and i am unsure how to restore my data and apps on top of the new build. doesnt the backup overwrite the whole system?
any help appreciated
thanks!

That's correct. Restoring a backup via CWM will replace everything and take you back to 10.2. Using something like Titanium Backup will allow you to back up your apps and restore them on the newly installed CM11. Alternatively, you could use Nandroid Manager to restore your apps from the CWM backup (although I can't vouch for this approach, as my only successful use of Nandroid Manager, so far, was to restore apps to a replacement phone, on the same CM branch)

TI Backup will also read individual apps from a CWM backup. That said, you should be able to dirty flash CM11 over your 10.2 installation. Having the backup around would be good if you want to revert.

Oops - so what do you guys do when trying nightlies, re-install everything? I have small details in config, for instance the order of shortcuts in homescreen, etc., that would take very long to re install. Or nightlies from the same version are meant to be dirty flashed?
Thanks again

You can dirty flash a newer CM-11 nightly over an older one. You can dirty flash a CM-11 nightly over an older CM version (Currently TeamApexQ only supports flashing over a 10.2.x installation. I personally haven't had to wipe between incremental installations since I first installed CM9 on my phone. Went from 9 to 10.1 to 10.2 to 11.

[Q] Currently on MIUI MCGv1 - Want to go to MCGv2

Im a nub. Im currently on MIUI MCGv1 with all my apps and theme modifications. I want to update to MCGv2 without loosing all my settings/theme/apps/data modifications. How would i do so? I have mybackupPRO for backing up apps/data/contacts, but what about Theme and setting setting's.
Other than that, if im currently on MCGv1 with speedmod. To get to MCGv2 i would just flash the zip via CWM and no change to the kernel right?
Thanks guys.

Here my step when I'll do MIUI update:
1) Wipe Cache
2) Wipe dalvik Cache
3) Format system
and in the end flash the firmware in CWM.
Or do this very easly step, flash the zip that you can find in this post before the firmware update.

I do this last option in my my last update to MIUI MCGv1, the zip clear every reference to the last kernel and do every step for you. Afet all you preserve everything of your previous firmware, contats, apps, theme settings.
I hope to have you helped
This is my very first post, thought I'll give back to the xda community for helping me get my Galaxy S to where it is now.
I used an app called Ti Backup (Titanium Backup). After reflash to different versions of Miui (or even other roms), I load the backup via the app itself, and it restored all my apps as well as the settings for each app.
I'm currently on Miui MCG v3, not sure if the built-in backup function restores settings for apps.
hope this helps.

[Help] CM7 / Titanium Backup

Can someone please help me with flashing a new CM nightly, (I am on build 167), and what I want to do is:
1. Flash it, obviously
2. Backup my current apps and settings
3. After flashing it, restore those apps/settings
4. So that after flashing a new build, I have everything set up as though I just updated stuff, no wipe.
Can someone supply a step-by-step guide on this process? Thanks!

Its pretty easy, follow the instructions on the cyanogenmod forum for your device. Best way is through ROM Manager paid version. It'll let you download the latest CM7 nightly. Before flashing, use titanium backup to batch backup all user apps + data. No need to backup system data because you will not and should not restore system data after flashing to a new rom, it can lead to problems. Only restore user apps and their data.

Complete backup question

I have an almost stock skyrocket that is rooted. I also have the paid version of titanium backup on it, but i'm not really sure how to use most of it except to backup and freeze apps. I want to flash a few ice cream roms, but I was wondering if anyone could coach me or point me to a page on how to completely backup and restore my device in case I need or want to return it back to stock. Thanks for any help.

Go into clockworkmod and choose backup and restore. Backup. You will have a full backup of your apps and your stock rom. If you ever need to revert, go back into clockworkmod, do a superwipe, and then restore the backup.
Sent from my Hercules on CM9
First get rom manager, then i believe through rom manager you can install clockworkmods touch recovery. Then boot to recovery and make a nandroid backup, which I think is the best way to do a full backup of your phone.
Titanium backup is great but you may find when doing batch backups of apps that you'll run into errors when switching between different roms.
I find using titanium to backup my app data only and just reinstalling apps from the play store (just go down the my apps list to reinstall your apps) to be the best way to avoid force closes. Then you can just restore your app data in titanium.
(do a search for more details on clockworkmod)
Nandroid backups done with CWM do not back up the radio IIRC. If you want to be able to return to your current ROM I suggest:
1. Make sure you know how to install the stock ROM you are currently running with Odin.
2. Make sure you have the stock rom files you need to do step 1.
3. Backup your current setup with CWM.
Try ICS as much as you like.
If you want to revert then Odin the stock rom you are using now, Odin CWM, boot into recovery and restore the backup you made. This will make sure everything is back to what you have now.
I've only used Titanium Backup to restore Nova Launcher after flashing a new ROM (Play Store downloads all the apps) and restoring Nova Launcher neatly flings all those apps back into the proper folders.
I can't comment on TiBu, but using when using nandroid via CWM as suggested it helps to have separate backups of call logs, contacts and messaging to restore.

[Q] Updato CM10.1 R0.2 to CM10.1 R4

Hi, to update CM10.1 R0.2 to CM10.1 R4 it's raccomended to download rom, make full wype and install or i have the possibility to update without full wipe...like a easy way similar OTA?
Thanks guys!!!( sorry for my no perfect english)
if you don't want to wipe everything. make a nandroid backup. wipe cache and dalvik then install update. if something goes wrong you can always go back to your backup and then do another clean install

ok....thanks! i was thinking that, if i use ALL2SD to move all apps into SD and then i install new version with full wipe.
I think is the best way to do all quickly, in this way (i think) i will not have to expend much time after install new rom version.
You think it's a good way to operate?

No, they would still have to be reinstalled, use titanium backup to backup your apps, it will reinstall then onto your new Rom easily, only restore user apps though system apps will cause problems

You can make An update zip with All your apps, it's actually easier to make an update zip with just titanium in it and then batch restore your apps and data afterwards

[Q] Backup and Restore Apps when switching ROMs

So, I've been having issues with my TF101 running CM10. I want to try switching ROMs to see if it helps. Issue is I have a lot of apps installed. In the past, I've used Titanium Backup, but the challenge is that I still have to sit there and approve each app for install manually. Is there a better way to handle this that I'm not thinking of, or should I just shell out for the premium version of TB?

Not exactly on point, but I use TWRP (from goo manager) and use the backup restore there when jumping from one rom to another making Titanium useful when switching ROMs from say CM10 to EOS4. I have a backup saved of stock rooted ICS too. When I do a restore my entire system reverts. This is only helpful switching DEVs. In any event I'd instal TWRP through goo manager. EOS4 is real nice. But you MUST read the instructions.

Yeah, I have TWRP and use it to take whole snapshots. I know when I take backups there, it has options like system, data, boot, etc, but I've never been sure if you can take just a data backup and restore that between ROM's and have that do what I'm wanting.

I've never been able to do exactly what you want, hense my "not on point", but a combo of the two is very helpful. (to me at least):cyclops:
Was wondering about this myself.
I have used Titanium Backup pro and find it very useful for restoring a full set of apps with data, as well as any missing data.
I haven't tried it but Carbon backup I think works on Android 4 without root required.

The Pro version eliminates all this questioning.
