[Q] Bad USB port - Motorola Atrix 2

Just bought used atrix 2 on ebay, listed as for parts only. Problem was it wouldn't charge. Cleaned usb port with toothpick and alittle electrical contact cleaner. Port works sometimes for charging, but is not picked up by computer. I'm running a dual boot setup on computer, windows vista and ubuntu, and neither picks it up when plugged in with usb cable. Tried multiple cables and no luck. Call me dumb, but it will charge while hooked to computer, but nothing else, I don't get it. I'm assuming it's a hardware problem, is there a way to check this. Thanks for any help in advance. I'm off for more searching.

Is Samsung cable important?

Hi,
I am having all kind of problem with my nexus s 4g. I searched around and found some people had their problems because they had the wrong cable. Is there really a difference between non-samsung cables and samsung cables ? Thanks
What kind of problems? I've had problem with the touchscreen responding weirdly when using a different amperage charger. No problem when using ANY cable on the stock charger or on the computer though.

Yes, if you are going to be using adb, or fastboot it is recommended to use the USB cable that came with it. I have used other cables before on the Nexus, and fastboot or usb debugging won't read at times.
Hope this helps.
I have a LG cable. I connected my phone to the computer ( i tried this on a couple different computer ) and i do not see my phone as mass storage device i can only see it as Unknown in Device Manager. I called Samsung and they told me there is no driver for this phone. I have tried PDAnet ( at the page where it asked me to plug in my phone nothing was detected )and have installed SDK with google usb driver. I have also tried Samsung_Mobile_USB_Driver_V1.3.800.0.msi.... . I went to Update Driver and selected List all drivers to have it display all drivers on my computer and there was no ADB devices....

You don't need to install ADB drivers for the mass storage to be detected.
A standard mass storage driver is used when plugged in a computer so you don't need administrator rights.
mabry, that's very strange. Unless the cable is defective, you shouldn't have any issue with adb or fastboot. I've used a cable from an LG phone, a cheap winding cable and at least 2 other cables I've found on the spot (at my parents house) to do adb and pull stuff from the phone while I was away from home. They all worked flawlessly *shrugs*
I have tried two different LG cables and a HTC cable from a HTC windows phone ( dont think that matter..) In total i have tried three cables and on three computers , all same result... I do have the newest 2.3.7 update from Sprint... i bought this phone off of a kid who hasn't been paying his bills so the phone itself hasn't been released for new services but i don't think that would affect how it connects to a computer ...

everything else on the phone works fine. The port itself looks fine and it charges fine ... when connected to a computer or the power adapter...
i have downloaded an app from the market and its called USB host controller. I started the app and on the Info page of the app it shows.."S3C USB Host driver not found!" and "Root hub is not present, USB Host mode not active or not available"... does that mean there is something wrong with the phone itself ?
Cased sealed went to Spring and bought a data cable from them. Now my phone is working just fine. They said sometimes different cables will have pins for different function ( charge, data etc..) Will THANK all that tried to help

Except those cables you tried all have data pins connected, because they were meant to be used with smartphones...
Happy it's working for you, but strange problem nonetheless.

Phone not being seen by any PC

So this issue started a few days ago. Any time I plugged my phone in it would constantly connect and disconnect from the pc. I've tried multiple usb cables, ports, and the 3 PCs I have with the same result on each. Now when I plug it in, it is no longer being recognized by the PC, Odin, ADB, etc... It will charge but that is it.
I have a warranty replacement coming to me however I need to be able to get this one back to stock... Any suggestions?
Before anyone asks, NO it has never been wet, dropped, damaged in any way, set on fire, caught in a land slide, earthquake, what have you.. The phone itself functions perfectly fine. All drivers are up to date, none of my PCs configurations have changed. I have one I use specifically for app development and not even that one will see the phone.
I had the same problem. I used a different cable and it all worked better....now with that said it happened again so I flashed my phone back to stock and all was well.
Then went to flashing ROMS.

Really check out the micro usb cable. A bad cable will just about always allow a device to charge, but data transfer is another story. If you really have tried a few micro USB cables, then it the problem relies elsewhere. Try restarting both phone and PC, and if neither works, sounds like you have a busted port on the Skyrocket.
Thank you both for your responses. I am a PC technician so I followed my usual troubleshooting steps to figure this out. I narrowed it down to either all of my cables are bad (not a chance) or the phone is just f**ked (likely). Ah well ill have to try to use another way to force the stock firmware and recovery on here. Lol
HTC = Hate The Consumer
I use my old Nokia OEM USB cable. Connects with the right number of pins on the USB connection end. I'd check your USB cables for # of pins . Skyrocket uses 5 I believe. Also that there is sufficient power to your USB ports. Aka avoid front USB ports which could only be 4 pin....

When you plug the usb cable in, do you see the usb icon at the top left of your screen? I have to pull that window down to tell it to connect to pc, then confirm it again before mine connects. Mine doesn't auto connect on its own.
I see you've been a member for a few years so if its not connecting, that really sucks man. Hope you get it figured out.

Not running the AOKP ROM are you? The R3 build had an issue with this, and all AOKP will disable USB to PC if you enable 'fast charge' under ROM Control...
Good luck :S
According to what I've been reading you can try using the *#7284# code and setting the USB portion from PDA to MODEM and then back to PDA and it would kickstart the connection. No dice for me though. Ive been through 7 different USB cables already.. I am not about to go and buy one just to keep playing with it my other phones connect just fine using the same cables. No, I am running the latest Sky ICS

[Q] Usb port issues

hello ,
let start off by saying i liked this phone until i started having problems with it ..
so a few months ago i after the usb port not working as a (media device) with cm10.1 &10.2 for a year delt with it ... i have no mtp or ptp options not even upon plugging it in dose not even acknowledge it just beeps then windows 7 usb device not recognized until i re flashed jb 4.1 and it worked again windows 7 seen it as a media device and i was able to tether until a few days ago and it with no warning it will not let me see it kies dose nothing just says usb device not recognized and dose the same as it did with cm10.1 i have flashed and wiped a few times no change i would like to tether and get my files on and off my wife has the same phone no issues ..??? but what i don't understand how can it work well for a few months then not ..? can the mount points in the phone get corrupt ? seems like its just the phone because my wifes tethers just fine mine wont she is stock jb .. i have a rooted jb .. thats it can the usb port just fail .?
when i plug it in it just goes strait to charging on pc and beeps thats it .. tried different usb cords and computers the same thing
The USB port could be damaged or dirty. What happens if you plug the cable into the phone, apply gentle pressure on it towards the back of the phone (Or the front) and then plug it into the computer? Does it start to work so long as the cable is held? If so I would guess the USB port may have developed some bad solder joints.
yeah tried everything

Nexus 5 Touch issue when connected to PC

Hi
I have been having this issue for sometime now. I connect my Nexus to my laptop using the USB cable, and most of the time the screen starts acting up. Touch calibration is all wrong. When i click something, the actual button that is clicked is totally a different one. And sometimes it activates stuff on its own.
I have tried several stuff I found on google. Some said it had something to do with my home electricity not being grounded. I checked. It is grounded. Tried everything from flashing new roms to freshly starting from stock! Nothing seems to work!
Its like this thing have a mind of its own
Hi, if you use stock wall adapter, it's working correctly? Usually that is some kind bad electricity problem or that device where you plugged it causes problems.
Check usb cable. If it's not happening on LG cable and LG wall charger than it's your usb to pc cable problem
PS check other usb port and cable

Help figuring out what's broken with my OnePlus One

Hello everyone,
A couple of weeks ago my USB data connection on my OnePlus One has stopped working.
This means that no connection is even detected on any computer.
This is not a driver issue as the computer doesn't even notice anything has plugged in.
I think it's not a software/ROM issue because the same applies to fastboot mode and recovery mode - no data connection, no "usb plugged in" sound on any computer, no device showing up.
It's also not a cable issue, as the same cable works on other OnePlus One's and I've tried many different known-to-be-working cables.
More facts:
1) When plugging to a computer USB port - the battery icon shows the charging (lightning) symbol for a half a second and disappears and it won't charge. The computer, of course, doesn't see a usb device plugged.
2) When connecting to an AC charger - it charges just fine.
3) I already tried replacing the dock connector and flat cable unit with a new one - did not solve the issue, which means the dock connector is fine.
Any insight on this will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

By dock connector, you mean the USB port? Typically, this issue arises when the pins in the USB port get damaged. I don't know how the rest works out, but if that particular section of pins have to communicate throughout the rest of the motherboard, perhaps the trail responsible for that may have somehow gotten damaged. This is a clueless theory, someone with more electrical/motherboard experience can verify this.
What I do know is that once the micro USB port has been replaced on the phone, the issue should be fixed. It happened to an S3 I still have and I got it replaced by a friend. Sadly, it happened to me at the wrong time since i had wiped the entire OS and internal storage and was relying on my USB OTG cable and a flash drive which contained a rare rom called Sonic Open Kang Project (SOKP).
DO NOTE that this has also been an issue with me on the software side of certain devices. I uave had practically every flagship device out there and have come across a point where this happens on both stock and custom roms. My Optimus G did it on custom roms, and my Nexus 7 2012 occasionally on stock. There were other devices I cannot remember but sometimes factory resets or replacing the rom helps. However, you did state that the result is still the same on fastboot/recovery, so this seems to be more on the hardware side.
I replaced the USB connector (including it's flex cable) entirely. Did not solve the issue.
What else could be wrong?
try again

Try another computer. See if you can get any response from adb.

I tried a lot of different computers and cables. None of them detect a USB connection.
Again, to clarify - they don't even SEE a usb device has been plugged in.
recovery?

You running a custom recovery? If so, see if you can toggle the mtp on/off reboot with each back to recovery. Use the tools to check the filesystem, permissions, etc.
Could pins have damaged?
Well, I did replace the USB connector with a new one, so if pins are damaged it's gotta be on the motherboard side, and I can think of no reason why that would ever happen.
As for recovery, I'm running TWRP and I'm not sure I understand what you meant I should try. Can you elaborate?
Thanks
