Major Prob - Hope for help - Sony Smartwatch

I have a GS3 running a custom 4.1.2 ROM called BoneStock. I just got the SW2 and after charging the watch turned NFC on and followed the instructions in the manual (downloaded the SmartWatch app, downloaded SmartConnect, touched the back of the phone to the back of the watch), which started the download of the SW to the watch. Everything seemed good.
To start getting notifications I downloaded WatchIt and it installed on the watch as well. All continued to seem good. I then sent myself a text from my wife's phone to my phone and after a second the message popped up on my watch. Things seem really good at this point.
Things immediately went bad though... my phone seemed to reboot, and then the touch screen seems to be locked, as I can't swipe to get past the lock screen. The screen occasionally turns itself on. The lit icons (back button, and menu button) lights up. I get notifications on the notification line at the top of the phone. There is a white hand on the notification bar (I believe its the Accessibility icon).
I have tried rebooting my phone. I have tried pulling the battery. Neither has helped. I have turned the watch off, hoping to free up the phone. That didn't help. I tried going into recovery and rebooting the phone from there. Didn't help. Hard to believe the very stock custom ROM is the cause of this, but open to any suggestions and hoping someone has faced and overcome a similar problem. Hoping I don't need to replace my phone, also hoping I don't need to return my watch.
UPDATE: I was able to get my phone up and running by getting into Recovery (TWRP), doing a wipe that brought my phone back to the original state.I will have to start over and try again to pair the watch and phone, and get it to catch notifications... this time without killing my phone.
Anyone have any thoughts to why my phone and watch didn't play nicely together?
(1) Is it due to the custom ROM?
(2) Did I make some major mistake when I paired the phone and watch (using NFC)? Should I try using bluetooth?
(3) Did I make a mistake setting WatchIt as my notification SW?
Any help would be much appreciated. I bought the SW2 at Best Buy and they have a 15 day return period, so any advice and guidance over the next few days would be much appreciated!

Newer update... I started over, this time using Bluetooth instead of NFC, and using the Sony messaging notification for texts instead of WatchIt. While I accidentally found the distance between phone and watch wasn't as far as I had thought, the watch picked up the texts and almost immediately if close to the phone. So good so far. My next need... native email.
I knew the SW2 only worked natively with Sony phones so I switched to K9 on my phone and downloaded K9 For Smartwatch for the watch. I didn't get any notifications appear on the watch. I will try again this AM, but am I missing a step or extension or setting that enables the watch notifications?
I also downloaded the Sony callhandling extension but didn't have time to test that, but again, I am wondering if I missed a step or setting with that?
Lastly, if I do try to use WatchIt again, is there a correct step by step process, like granting accessibility, or setting it up that only specific apps or processes send notifications, or anything else that will avoid freeing up my phone?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cant really help with custom roms, but I have android 4.1.2 aswell and watchit interacts with some other functions wierdly. Did you accept the watchit in Easy accessibility settings? It must be turned on. And i recommend to let watchit only notify with the apps you really want. Otherwise it will notify all time like "text was copied to clipboard" etc.
What is your email application? Gmail smart extension works fine with gmail (obviously). But after you have downloaded the gmail-app, you also need to add the adress for it by clicking the installed app from sw2 control center from the phone. Probably same with K9?

Thanks for the response. And yes, the GMail extension has a checkbox (checked) for my gmail address.
I switched from the stock email on my Android phone to K9 Email client since I saw it had a Smartwatch app (extension?) that I downloaded from the Play Store. But it doesn't have a similar checkbox that you can check from you can check accessible from the SW2 control center. I did read that the K9 for Smartwatch only reads notifications from the Unified Inbox and to make sure that the "Hide Special Accounts - Hide the Unified inbox" setting under Display is not checked... confirmed it is not. I also ran across a setting in K9 under Interaction that says "start in Unified Inbox" hoping checking that setting may help. But so far, no email notifications.
I may need to brave trying Watchit again. This time trying to not accept all notifications but instead only choosing K9 email notifications. But very interested in any other suggestions and advice, especially from anyone that is using K9 as their email client.

I dont know k9, but i didnt get the stock email app (icon: envelope with @-sign) working with sw2 neither with watchit. Watchit only notified me when i was sending a message, but never notified received messages. So I had to start using gmail-app instead of that stock app (envelope with @ sign). Watchit also interacted with the stock app, and the stock app started to talk back to me when deleting messages.
If you use gmail, why not just using the gmail-app and that extension for sw2 instead of using the stock email app?

Dang, tried WatchIt again, and tried using K9 and then switching back to the stock email app. Neither seems to push notifications or WatchIt doesn't seem to catch the notifications. And then the phone froze again.
Do people using WatchIt see a white hand in their notifications bar on their phone. One shows up on mine, and when you pull down notifications it leads you to Accessibility > Talkback (even though Talkback is not checked and WatchIt - JB is checked ).
I am getting tired of having to restore from Recovery and rebuilding my phone. But not catching emails on the watch is a key use case for me... without it, I am returning the SW2.
I may try bringing it in to Best Buy and seeing if someone there can solve this. But I know folks on XDA are smarter than the BB people... so any and all help and suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks for the response. Seems like there has to be a way to see email notifications (POP3 via Comcast). Without it, the watch is less useful to me. I do have a GMail account and the GMail notifications work great (very useful since I use Google visual voicemail). But most of my email use is the Comcast account. Without being able to see those, I will look at Pebble, or even return altogether and wait.

I have the default email app working with watching. I have email and exchange services enabled. Not sure if that'd work for pop3 mail though as I don't have an account to test with.

Watchit
- no i dont see any hand on my phone (maybe it's something to do with the custom rom?)
- there is problem with Watchit and talkback. I think it's more android related than app related bug. My phone started sometimes talk back to me, but I got rid of it on this way: when watchit was activated in Easy accessibility, then I went to settings -> application -> all apps -> google text-to-speech and cleared data. It may still interact with samsung processes i think, because if I use stock email app (that one which has envelope icon and @-sign) my phone keep talking me back. I dont use anymore stock email app. I didn't get it to notify me about coming emails.
- right now im only using watchit to notify me about skype and sms forwarding.
Like I said before, if you use gmail, don't use stock email app (that one which has envelope icon with @sigN). Instead of it, use the other one "gmail-app" and it works great even withouth watchit or k9. With gmail you don't need k9/watchit because the gmail smart extension works fine. If you are using some other mail than gmail, then wait and see others to give their instructions. Just don't install the watchit anymore if it causing huge problems.

When you say "default email app", do you mean that one with envelope icon and @-sign? How did you get it to work? I have tried days with watchit but no.. Only notification I get, it is when sending a message and my watch notifies me "sending" ... "sent"

Thanks again. I will give up on Watchit. Is there a different Notifications app/extension that works almost as well as Watchit? I did see Augmented and while the cost really isn't an issue it sure looks complicated and doesn't have a good look (someone else described it as causing "eye cancer"). But willing togive his free trial a shot. But are their any others... eg Notification Pro, or eNotifier, or ?
If there was a way to have my Comcast email appear in my Gmail inbox I'd go that route. Or if I could get K9 to work, since it actually consolidates other email including Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail.

So you are rooted... that is helpful info, thanks. On which phone? I have been really happy with BoneStock and waiting to see if the dev offers a 4.3 version. Though also tempted by some of the newer 4.4 KitKat ROMs.

Hmm... a glimmer of hope. It appears you can send POP3 email to Gmail:
http://email.about.com/od/gmailtips/qt/et_collect_pop.htm
May be a bit klugey... but worth a shot.

Samsung adds a lot of their features by hooking into the accessibility settings, especially prior to 4.3. It messes with other apps that use the accessibility. Your best bet is to use a 4.3+ based rom so you can use the notification access setting. If you really don't want to do that then you can try Wristin which is similar to WatchIt, but it will probably not work right either.

Thanks for the response. The good news is some devs just appear to have cracked the Samsung/Verizon 4.3 OTA update and a first rooted unlocked ROM has appeared. Hopefully I will be able to at least move up from my stable 4.1.2 to 4.3. In the mean time I will try having my email all come in through Gmail. And research notification access services in the different phones and OSes.
btw, where did you see Wristin? can't seem to find any info on it/them...

Email Notifications

Hi
I have a Samsung Note 3 and installed watchit which worked great with my SW2 to send email notifications (not gmail, just email client).
I decided to try watchify so I uninstalled watchit but that didn't seem to send email notifications so I uninstalled watchify and put watchit back on and now it doesn't work either. I also tried wristn and that also won't send email notifications even if I have it selected.
Is there anything I can do to get one of them to send email notifications as it quite clearly worked before but something is preventing it from working now.
Thanks
Stu

Go into Accessibility settings, make sure WatchIt is enabled.
It is definitely enabled.

Do you have enabled any powersaving options? Some batterysaver disable the connection. Othwewise there was the app from sony called email. It works fine. Or you take kmail with smartwatch extention for multiaccount.
I never changed any power saving options on my phone. As I mentioned, everything was working until I uninstalled watchit to try one of the other notifiers.
I looked at the Sony email but that doesn't work on non Sony phones.

There are some strange things with accessibility on all my phone. Sometime it stop to read notification. Often I must deactivate and reactivate to start work again. Other time I must deselect all other app in accessibility and revalidate one by one starting by the one I prefer....
I think that app wich work with "security" in place of "accessibility" works better.
Recently I installed a new app "AllNotify" and it seem works better than other my previous notification app, at this time I use just AllNotify and I deactivated Watchit to try.
Thanks. I'll have a look at allnotify

Mail count incorrect

Title pretty much says it all!
On my phone (Note 4) the unread mail count is currently one. On the S2, it is twenty-eight. Scrolling through the mail on the S2, I can see emails that I deleted days ago. Am I perhaps missing something from the settings?
(The emails relate to gmail and Google Apps mail)
Many thanks

I have the same exact issue. I emailed Samsung and they told me to do a factory reset to correct the issue as they have not heard of this bug from the latest update. A factory reset did NOT correct the issue. I believe the latest update caused the issue but convincing Samsung is another story. I was going to call them on Friday to see what the story is but does anyone else know what is going on here?
So I contacted Samsung technical support and they asked me to resync my bluetooth connection with my phone. Basically you just disconnect the gear s2 from the phone and hit connect again in the gear manager. It seemed to have worked for the first email deleted but not for any subsequent emails. I just tried it again and it is actually not working at all.
Because this is not a "software issue" they claim, the watch would need to be sent for repairs. I don't know what else to do but I'm not sending off the watch for repairs. If you are experiencing this issue, please call Samsung because they do not believe this is an issue and let us know here. If you AREN'T experiencing this please let us know as well...
The issue is that when you delete an email from your watch, it will delete from the phone CORRECTLY. However, if you delete an email from your PHONE it will not automatically delete it from the watch... causing you to have to manage the deletions on your watch manually. This was working prior to a software update recently.

I am not having the same issue, if I delete my email from the phone it does delete it on the watch. It will not delete it from the watch when I am connected remotely though, but it does remove it once I get back on bluetooth. This is exchange email through the normal android email system. Have you also tried deleting the email on either outlook or the web client and see if it updates the phone and watch that way?
One thing I do notice though that does throw my mail number off at times. If I do not receive the notification on my phone then I do not get that email on my watch. So far no matter what it doesn't seem to sync back to it. The only instance I have ran into with this is if I have my email application open and a new email comes in. Because the email app is open it never does a notification to my phone so the watch never gets it.

Thanks for the post. I reinstalled Gear Manager and it MAY have fixed the issue. I'm still going through some tests. The only way to get the emails to your watch all the time is to turn off the Limit notifications in Gear Manager > Notifications on your phone. I turned it off for the very reason of getting all the future email to go to the watch.

That's good that you may have got it resolved.
So for mine, I have already turned off the limit notifications option a few days ago. That works good so if I am using my phone the notification will still come to the watch, before I had turned it off if I was using my phone the notification would not come to the watch until my screen on the phone went black.
The problem is that if I actually have my email app opened up on the phone, and an email comes in. The phone doesn't give a notification because I had the app open already and see the email. At this point the watch never gets a notification for that email because the phone never did. So that email never makes it to the email app on the watch. Its almost like the watch didn't see a notification so the email doesn't exist for it.
This is not the same result for text messages, text messages still seem to sync correctly even if I did not actually get that notification on the phone.

Ahhh ok I got ya. If the app is open, no notification, therefore no email on watch. Nice. I wondered why Samsung decided to handle emails like this to begin with. It would have been easier to just read from the phone or something instead of this convoluted sending notifications of future emails. That way I could access all the emails at once as well.
Yeah I agree, not sure what the thoughts were with it either. Owell, hopefully they will have some tweaks to it. The good thing is that it really isn't a big concern. If I already saw the email on my phone before the notification came in then I'm not that concerned about seeing it on my watch. The situation just won't come up very often as I don't just stare at my email app waiting for emails to come in haha. Just more of thought it was an interesting way they did things. Would be nice to know how that back end for that is working.
Either way, maybe it is because it is my first smart watch, but so far I'm still loving it even with some bugs and a lack of apps.
I just got a s2 classic, I am experiencing the same issue, I delete the messages from my phone, and they still show on the watch, I have tried removing gear from my phone and reinstalling, but it did not work, I still have the same issue.
any other people have this issue and have any other advice on fixing it.
thanks

Gmail and Default App Selection

Hello everyone. Thanks for reading and I am hoping someone could help me.
With the new Samsung S7, I am having the following issue. Gmail wont sync automatically, so I dont receive any new emails unless I personally go into the app. When I go into account settings, everything seems fine. But let me add, this is not always. One day is working fine, and next day its not. Its weird. When its not working right, and I enter account settings, I see the black sync circle next to mail, and unless I manually click it on, it wont update.
Next, I do not know if its marshmallow or the S7. But before, when playing videos, or anything, the actual phone will give me the option to pick from my choices, and when chosing, I have the ability to either click JUST ONE, or make it default. Now, whenever it gives me an option, it does not allow me to choose just once. It automatically makes it a default. Is there a way around this?
Thanks in advance.
My S7 has been receiving Gmail and FB Messenger messages rather intermittently but I haven't really been able to test enough to comment on it yet.
Your other issue is just the way Samsung/Touchwiz handles defaults. The way you're used to is the default MM way.
Definitely like the old default mm. With the new one I have to constantly go into settings and change default. It's annoying.
Today, Gmail worked for 2 emails, then it stopped receiving until I manually synced it. It weird.
RE the default App question, does anyone know of some setting (that maybe one that can be accessed via ADB) to return this to normal?
Similar to the way someone was able to enable Adoptable storage via ADB without needing root.

gmail not pushing mail

So, ever since the N update on my S7 and now on the S8, my email doesn't push/sync right away at all anymore. I have to go into the email for it update. I'm not sure whyy it's doing this. I haven't set it up that way, have background data allowed, and don't have any battery saviors set up to do this...
Any ideas on this why this is happening?
Nougat's overly aggressive doze is the cause here. Fix: https://androidtutorial.net/2017/05/02/fix-delayed-push-notifications-galaxy-s8s8/
The option under Special Access you want to look at is Optimise battery Usage.
I have the same issue. I have gmail set so that it is NOT Optimized for battery. I still don't get gmail updates (and therefore no notification) until I open the app (usually). Sometimes I do get the notification soon after the email is sent to me. Rather random.
After messing around for a while, I think it is a no notification thing and not a lack of synchronizing the emails. If I send myself a gmail, I get no notification, but I can look in my google account and see where gmail has synchronized. Then I go to gmail and the message is there.
^yep, could be related...but how to resolve?

So, I solved it by going to the app manager and disabling the gmail app. Since it is a system app, it doesn't uninstall it, but reverts it back to some previous version. That version has been giving me the appropriate notifications for every email I have received since.
I think I will look at disabling updates for gmail for a while.

I deleted data for the app. That also fixed the problem (for now anyway)
This has been an ongoing issue for me for over a year. It was an issue on this phone, my S7 edge and Note7.
Often I will see an email on my phone, read and archive it, then go about my business. Several hours later I go into Gmail on my PC and that email is still sitting there, unread.
Actually sending out an email on the phone seems to make the sync update, but other actions like reading, moving, or deleting emails doesn't. I've had times where my emails were still unread on the Gmail website 12 hours after reading them on the phone. I have the app's battery optimization settings turned off, and I have even gone into the app several times during that period and pulled down to check for new messages. It's pretty awful that the sync has such serious issues and nobody is fixing it.
Deleting the app's updates doesn't work for me. It might fix the issue briefly, but it always comes back pretty quickly, even without any updates to the app.
The only thing that fixed the issue for me was installing an app called something like "Gmail Push Fixer". It worked wonders on my S7 edge. Unfortunately, the app requires root so it isn't an option on my Snapdragon S8+.

Samsung email app disable notifications

Hi guys
I've been using the s3 since launch and it's been fine up until recently. I don't know if this happened when the gear app updated on my phone but lately the email notifications are playing up. I use the Gmail app for my personal mail and the Samsung email app for my exchange work mail.
The way I want it set up is Gmail notifications come through to my watch but work email doesn't. So I have gone in to notifications on the gear app and disabled email. This work fine for a couple of days but then it re enables itself. Does anyone else have a similar problem?
Cheers

Same issue here. The samsung app notification setting keeps kicking back on after I change it. Happens just about every 24 hours. Love to hear a suggestion to correct. Thanks!
Hi jvarny
To be honest I gave up trying to get it to work. I have tried 2 different phone's with both Nougat and Marshmallow Roms but still the same. I've uninstalled Samsung email now and just added my exchange account to Gmail. Works really well for what I use it for.

Hey guys, I use Blackberry Hub for my e-mail accounts and it works fine, I can enable/disable notifications for any of the accounts without kicking back in.
Never used samsung's e-mail app.
