[Q] GPS facing a bit off - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all!
I'm mainly wondering where the cause of the problem would lie, kernel, ROM or perhaps something else, but if any solutions to the problem is ofc greatly appreciated!
On to the problem:
When I start any app that uses my GPS to locate me (ingress, google maps) my location is perfect but my facing seems to be random, at times its good but most of the time its either 90 degrees off for 180 degrees off... So in other words it would look like I´m facing the exact wrong way or to the side.
I'm currently running with CM NIGHTLY 11-20131229 hammerhead.
No custom kernel or anything else modded more then xposed framework with greenify

When on foot, on my bicycle, and in the car, it reads which way I'm facing after I've traveled about 50 yards.
Have you ever tried one of those supposed gps-boosting apps?

Google Skymaps Update = awesome!!!

I dont really use the app that much but i noticed that google skymaps was updated recently. upon entering the app and going into settings i noticed under other a sensor setting that has sensor speed and damping. i changed the speed to fast and have left damper as normal and i cant believe it but its SMOOTH the way it should be
dont know if anyone else was aware but just wanted to give a general heads up
This should be in Captivate Themes and Apps, but I downloaded this yesterday too and it does, in fact, kick butt.
I was afraid that because GPS is shoddy on the Captivate, it would not know where you were pointing the phone, but it does a great job! I guess it only needs a general location, then uses the compass/orientation sensors to determine what you're 'looking at'.
Mine seems to be broke
I downloaded it yesterday and tried it today... the display is jittery and jumps around. The prior version was just fine. I wonder if I can go back to it.
I love skymaps, now I don't need my 70 year old mother to tell me what is what.

Nexus S - Random Reboots, GPS and Compass issues?

Hey,
i know this has been discussed in many threads..just want to have some answers.
i bought my Nexus S a few months ago, it's the I9020 not I9023, from UK.
i really love the phone itself, it's just awesome. had a htc hero before.
but i hate those random reboots, happens to me ~1 time per day. the screen wents really dark and a never ending bootloop happens. have to pull out battery to get it back to work, most times i don't even notice this and the phone is dead after a while of bootlooping... no fix yet right? anyway i "can" live with this but hope to get a fix soon...
GPS and Compass were unuseable since i have it. even my hero has a faster and especially safer GPS-Fix, GPS on Nexus S just loose fix every few seconds and compass does not jump around 50-100°. THIS really sucks! I have already searched around on google and XDA and wherever if this is a hardware or software issue and if there is a possible fix for it but i haven't found a real answer yet and this is what i want to know now.
is this hardware or software related?
is there a fix possible?
like i said, love the phone itself but these issues would make me resell it...
hope i'll get some answers and don't be rude, my english issn't the best.
Best regards and happy easter
Flo
edit: im using latest CM7 with latest Netarchy-Kernel with no additions.
The boot loop/reboot problem is definitely a CM7 issue. None of the other ROMS have this problem.

You could still have bumped an older thread, though. Like mine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035005.
I think if all the people with GPS problems could get together in one thread (needn't be mine, of course, there's lots), this issue would get more exposure and eventually be fixed.

No idea, but since the Nexus One and the Galaxy S with 2.3.3 have similar issues, I'm still hoping it's software. There is no known fix at this time.

i guess you are right, and im doing my share here. i have at least 2, 3 random reboots everyday, even if its a clean install, everything wiped. there's something buggy in every cm7 based rom
I guess its the radio problem, for the gps,

[Q] Component missing i9001

Hey guys! I just bought myself an I9001 Galaxy S Plus from someone (second hand)... It's my first smartphone so i think i've been busted.
The phone seemed to work well, and everything was ok. But when I try to use the GPS (without internet connection), it does'n seem to find any server. I've changed some different ROMs with different Kernels, but it still can't reach any server.
I forgot to mention that with some ROMs the signal level is very oscillating...
Today i was looking at the phone and observed that there is a hole just above the battery where some component, like an antenna or something is missing. I don't know what component is that...
I think that the missing component is the one in te next picture. But what is its name and role? Instead of it, at my phone, there's a soildered wire... This trick was made to mask other issues of the phone? (if i replace the missing component the phone might have problems?)
I'll attach the photos, may be you can help me. Thanks!!!
Does anybody know?

I think it's a Connector coaxial, a micro miniature form of RF coaxial connector. Look at one i marked with an arrow.. You can replace that part from samsung service center
Best of luck.
The details:
Design LOC: RFS100
SEC CODE: 3705-001731
Description: CONNECTOR-COAXIAL
thank you!
but that's the reason why my gps doesn't work?
or that's the reason why the signal level is very oscillating when i'm using some custom ROMs?
do I need it, or i can live without ?

May be. Not sure..
I used to have a i9000B wich is basicaly the same device.
THE GPS signal simply sucks, it was so bad that sometimes it took 2 minutes to lock in open field, with some roms it got better with other even worse.
I used GPS AIDS with that device an app that was developed just to try to solve this particular device problem at that time. look it up, maybe it can help a little bit, but i thing this device will never get a high speed gps lock.

I know that its GPS sucks, but mine effectively sees nothing. no server
Am i blind, or my antenna is missing completely?
No. Sorry, the antenna is there. I don't know what my problem is with the GPS.
Doesn't seem like there is anything missing. GPS on this was really bad. I never got a GPS signal.

Why did GPS accuracy take a nose dive after Maps-v6?

It's like they changed all the low level code that deals with the actual signal.
There doesn't appear to be any filtering or averaging going on anymore, which is causing my readout to bounce around by 15meters or so all the time. It didn't used to do this on older maps versions.
When I'm sitting at stoplights it says...turn left...continue straight...turn right...turn right...in 500 feet, turn make a U-turn...
It does this as my location constantly changes.
Does anyone else experience this? What to do about it?
Revert to an older version.
Nope, I surely don't have the same issues as you.

thanks guys. have high accuracy mode on. Running custom ROM (Paranoid) and Kernel. Is anyone else doing same as me?
Maybe i have the same problem when change direction, forma example turn right or turn left is slow. Anyway i will upload a video ti understand.
With androits can you share your GPS lock?
This is mine outdoor.... For me is very poor my signal but i dont know if There are a device that can get more SNR and more satellities.

Mine is been the same before the the new maps. It's never been great, but good enough. What annoys me the most is that EVERYtime I open navigation I get a message saying that i can improve accuracy if I enable wifi and then have to choose ignore or settings... Used to only do this once.

navigation is exact like me?
is normal? or i can get rma?

Strange overheating problem

Hey guys. A couple of minutes ago something strange happened to my phone. I just don't understand what's going on with it. I'm so disappointed. I mean... this phone costed me some money and experiencing such a thing makes me regret so much I bought my Nexus 5. It is indeed the best phone I've ever had but if this is what it takes to have a phone for such a small period of time and already have so many problems with it then... I think it's just a waste of money.
I don't know what's going on with it - It just overheated horribly while scrolling down on Facebook. Never happened this before. I was just scrolling like normal and using FB like normal and all of a sudden my phone becomes so hot - quickly I opened System Monitor and CPU temp was at 60-67ºC.
Also if I go to the Battery Tab in System Monitor the graph is pretty strange in my opinion, I mean the battery´s temperature is going up and down all over again it's like the graph of a heartbeat record or something.
Don't get me wrong, the Nexus 5 is the best phone but if this is really what it takes to own a phone for straight two months.... I mean, really?

Though it sounds like a app causing you problems there l would recommend trying a custom rom and kernel l have always found the stock ROM to run a little warm. But maybe before doing that have a look at trickster in the play store you change many more things to help keep things cooler.
The stock kernels the culprit I'd say. It's set in a narrow freq towards the top end causing it to run hot. Use Elemental X.

Perhaps it's those monitoring apps that you have installed. Just reboot the phone, should be fine.

It was indeed because of these apps. Uninstalling them seems to have solved the issue. Thank you for pointing it out! I guess I was a lil bit scared at first.
