hey guys
reading a-bit around these forums some user said he doesn't ever install custom roms anymore, just the features he want
i was wondering if that works and if its in any way related to the name i wrote in the title? is there like a great how-to for this somewhere?
ty!
Yep, Xposed is awesome and has eliminated the need to flash custom ROMs to gain features that used to only be available in said ROMs. You need to install the Xposed framework via the Xposed Installer app, then just download whatever modules you want via the Xposed app to add features to your stock ROM. GravityBox is a great module to start with as it adds a TON of various features. All of my Android devices are stock rooted with Xposed.

Because it's an app, does it in any way bog down or slow down the device a bit? Since it's not in a way, "built" into the rom/custom rom

It's not really an app, the app just installs the framework and manages the modules. It actually modifies the ROM itself, making the changes pretty much "built in" until the modules are deactivated and/or the framework is uninstalled. It's not something that runs on top of the OS like a launcher or anything like that. Maybe someone smarter than I can explain exactly how it works, because as far as I'm concerned it's just magic. I've been using it on all my devices for a long time and it has had absolutely zero ill effects. It only makes my phones better. Of course, it all depends on what modules you choose and how you set them up. But the ones I've used have just been awesome.
Yes. There are plenty of threads explaining how to do it. The best one is the actual thread itself. I'm on my phone otherwise I would have linked you to it.
Xposed is the best there is out there. Removes the need for ROMs if you just want certain features.
Just bear in mind that Xposed isn't ART compatible as of yet and until @rovo89 comes up with it, you will still be using Dalvik.
It really isn't hard to install. If your bootloader is unlocked and you're rooted, that already 90% of the work done.

Probably the same way everybody else doesn't hear about it. They see the words "framework" and "Xposed" and think "I'm not even gonna bother with messing with stuff like this"

That's how I was for a while. Then I tried it and realized how ridiculously easy and awesome it is.
I really love GravityBox on my nexus 5. Now it has all the functions I need!
Definitely would never say Xposed framework replaces custom ROMs. It'll give you options for features and customizations but that's about it. You will however not get any of the optimizations and code clean up that many devs do.
Device manufacturers will only make a device as good and as stable as needed to keep as many customers quiet as possible. They will not invest time and money to take things a step further as doing so costs them future sales. Many of the devs are owners and users of the devices they support and will take the time(if they have the knowledge)to make Android much better than any phone manufacturer will. Just my opinion.
Xposed Installer on Custom ROMs
Is there any danger to using Xposed of you have already flashed a custom ROM? I am running AOKP 4.1.2(unofficial) on my Galaxy S Blaze that I downloaded from the Galaxy S Blaze bible. I am anxious to try out Xposed Installer but I don't want to risk ruining my phone. Thanks.

I recently re-flashed the stock images, rooted and installed Xposed and gravity box on my device plus a few other modules. This combination gives me all the stability of stock plus the limited set of enhancements I wanted from custom ROMs. I also use the Franco Kennel r34 for better battery life and screen color balance control. The last essential module is Viper4Android which dramatically improved speaker, earplugs and Bluetooth audio.

I tend to not like flashing ROMs as I don't need most of the features they offer and it becomes a big time waster. That's a benefit of Nexus is you get a good software experience out of the box. Without flashing ROMs, you don't have much need for things like TiBu, so I never even rooted my GNex and felt no need to. However I find myself interested in Xposed and some of the modules, namely XPrivacy and Greenify. If you have used these on past phones or in particular the Nexus 4, can you share your experiences and whether you recommend using them for the N5 once they are updated for it. How about security implications of being unlocked/rooted vs. not. What are the risks, and is it possible to relock the bootloader after obtaining root and keep root?
Thanks.
In regard to the original question in the post YES!!!! There are sooooo many things you can do with it. Like getting most to all of the customization features of custom ROM's without having to flash anything. With Greenify you can hibernate system apps with the module. Personally I hope it's up and running soon.
Yes.
there are already lots of documents/posts discussing rooting, and most of them give you clearer answers than i do..
to me, the only risk of rooting lies in the user's own (or lack of) skill level in mastering the rooted device..
If anyone has GPS working properly (i.e. When location is set to "device only". Can they please post which ROM and version?
All my searching around hasn't led me to a fix. I'm on Slimkat latest weekly right now... But would switch roms for working gps... But preferably not stock.
This worked for me... Not sure why:
Rumpel78 said:
Try this, it helped me:
* Backup your installation
* Install stock rom, or restore a backup of stock and factory reset
* on stock, go through setup. Then start a gps app like Google maps
* you will be prompted with a dialog, stating location service was turned off and asking you if it would be turned on again. Answer yes.
* restore backup
*gps should now be fixed

@r2mahara I'm just curious why you would apparently take any custom ROM over stock, what's the aversion, can you explain? I tried a couple of custom Roms and went back to stock. I'm just really curious.
That's a fair question. In the past when I owned previous phones, it was a matter of the manufacturer not updating the software on the phone.
However with the Moto G, the stock firmware is actually pretty good. Everything works... It's been a nightmare finding a ROM that has everything working consistently (GPS, Camera etc).
With things like Exposed modules nowadays, it's less necessary to install a custom ROM when looking for certain features - so that's now a viable option. It's a bit tricky finding the right exposed module to do what you want, if it exists and involves lots of reboots.
For example, I find it extremely useful customising my navbar and adding my own buttons to perform specific operations. With Exposed & Gravitybox, I think I can add 1 extra button, which doesn't cut it. Maybe there's another module that's better for this specific thing, maybe not - it takes lots of time to search and try them.
Some ROMS feel faster - but with high end processors these days that's less of an issue. It's nice having bloat removed, but one can do that oneself with root and TB for example.
So in short, there's less of a case these days. I've been using Slim for years now. I like the feel of it, and I guess I'm just used to the way things are laid out. I never thought about changing until all these weird camera and GPS issues (which seem difficult to fix because not everyone has them).
I have everything working now - so plan on testing new builds and coming back to the current setup if anything doesn't work. But I just might go back to stock until things stabilise a bit more.

@r2mahara Thanks for the detailed reply. I am using stock 4.4.3 + xposed (modules DS battery saver, Greenify, gravity box) everything works and battery life is 2 days with average use. Its so good I won't upgrade further (it ain't broke so why try and fix it), that is unless the L version has substantial advantages. You mention xposed and the need to reboot. I believe that this is largely in the past. When I was experimenting and tweaking I don't recall having to reboot at all, or maybe I did the odd soft reboot which is quite quick? - I forget.
Oh, incidently there is a module available that claims to be able to make comprehensive changes to the navbar,

The first thing I did when I installed CWM was to make a nandroid backup of the stock ROM - so I used that for the purposes of fixing GPS.
Perhaps there's a stock ROM on these forums that's CWM/TWRP-installable.

Hi, well at home on WiFi I get 4 - 5 days, so you might like to try the module DS battery saver, of course I normally use the charger at home but I was curious if DS was doing an effective job and spent a bit of time evaluating it. I was happy enough to keep using it and got the Pro version.
I've had my Shield Tablet for some time now, but since I received my Recall replacement (LTE Model) I finally re-realized that this is in fact a fantastic little tablet. I haven't used my shield in about 4-5 months and I stopped using it because of the wifi issues and Horribly slow kit kat stock roms (as in, my tablet's IO was such a pain). But now that my recall replacement has the latest 5.1.1 and great wifi range, I again realize that this is still an impressive Gaming tablet (Emulators mostly).
So my question/request is this: I have added TWRP,and rooted the device but I can't seem to get Viper4Android to work (might be a BusyBox issue) even with SELinux set to permissive and I hate the AT&T/Phone app Bloat. So where are the Debloated Modded Stock ROMs?
I see the CM 12 based roms, but those are having issue with nvidia app (console mod) which I use. I'm just looking for a Debloated Stock 5.1.1 rom, rooted, with ViperAudio installed, and possible other mods (kernals, etc.)
I am in no way unappreciative of what we currently have, I know devs spend a lot of time on their roms :good:, but seeing that the Shield Tablet is still one of the most powerful tablet of the market, I figured there would be more choices (Spoiled with Nexus phones).
Maybe this already exists,if so please point me to it. If not I'll do what I can on my own for now, but I wanted to ask and see if others fell the same way.
Either way, sorry for the rant.
Thx everyone
I just rooted my tab and completely debloated it. Find that pure and clean stock runs best for games but with all the not needed google apps removed in system, its about 600~700 mb of bloat. And if you still need some of the G-apps you can easily download them from the Play Store!

This. It's the fact that it's an Exynos device. We've got plenty of TouchWiz based ROMs, which are totally fine for me, but the general attitude I see outside the Samsung forums is AOSP or GTFO.
I just got my Note 5 this past weekend. I upgrade from Note 4.
Yes I notice not much activities here at all.

Also we can flash all of the International Roms and Dr.Ketan's audio fix, so no need to port them.

well I have been buying, rooting and romming Samsung phones for the past four years and with the Note 5 the theme engine handles my theming needs, rooting means you can't use Samsung pay, which I use almost everyday and there are no custom roms because of the xynos processor. I have system wide ad blocking without root and don't want to root only for touchwiz Roms when the stock Samsung software is running so well, surprisingly.

I also want to know more about this system-wide ad blocking that doesn't require root.
I rooted my Note5 as soon as I got it, not knowing it would permanently disable my ability to use Samsung Pay. (Yep, I should have researched it, but didn't. Mea culpa.)
But the main reason I root is for AdAway -- if I had the same results without rooting, I'd have at least considered not rooting. Samsung Pay sounds pretty sweet. :\

If you just want ads in the browser blocked it's free. It works really well for me and even though it will show as using a lot of battery that is only due to the way the app works and handles data.

Thank u very much for the info
For system-wide ad blocking (I am not rooted) I use Adblock Plus. https://adblockplus.org/android-install
Go to the link at the bottom that says "Download Adblock Plus for Android"
Now what you have to do is make sure that Adblock Plus is never "optimized" and you don't ever kill it because it's running a localhost proxy (if you do, you lose internet until you start the app again.) You go into your APN settings and create a new APN that looks exactly like the one you already have, except that you use a proxy, localhost, on port 2020. Whenever you connect to Wifi, you use a proxy, localhost, 2020. It's not the best solution because it isn't invisible (it's always in your notifications otherwise Android can kill it to save memory) and you have to do the APN/WiFi changes as I just specified, but it's far less intrusive than ads all over the place.

Actually, I think one of the reasons there are not as many roms this time around is Samsung also had limited release of the Note 5 - it was originally internationally released in ASIA but not in Europe. I also think many of the major devs who normally are seen on the Flagship devices - didn't come along with the NOTE 5 because of BATTERY, No SD CARD, XYNOS and cost. Those four things kept many of the developers away (IMHO)
its a shame because it is a fabulous device despite those things. I will say that the Devs who did decide to join the Note 5 have done incredible work - there are some great roms out there. Just not as much variety. I also believe AOSP will eventually be done for the Note 5. There are several other examples of XyNOS phones and tablets getting AOSP - it is just a matter of time (and very hard work on the part of those who are working on it)
I'm not one to complain much but yeah I agree the Note 5 has been disappointing development wise i guess due to exynos. I might get the S7 as it's supposed to have snapdragon back which is supposed to be more developer friendly.

It has a few minor tweaks built in, and removes all bloat apps, and lets you choose which Samsung apps you want - which I only kept the camera basically.
The main reason I use it is because it's pre-rooted and pre-xposed in one neat package, that's where most my customisation comes from. From there I can use xTouchWiz and GravityBox among other modules to bring it closer to stock. Other than the settings menu it more or less looks like stock android. I prefer stock Android, I always used close to stock android ROMs on my previous phones.
I also had my phone before the massive explosion of Nougat ROMs. The only ROMs were TouchWiz ROMs, I had to flash something to debloat and Superman was the best offering. I would go for a Nougat ROM, but they seem to still be working out the kinks, and Xposed isn't officially on Nougat yet.

I'm not that hooked on Xposed that I can't do without it (though I came from AOSP). Before the S7, I ran a Galaxy Nexus on VZW; my S7 is on the UnCarrier side of Tracfone today. (Yes - you read the title correctly - I actually have the AT&T Mobility "Darth Cookie" beta firmware on my ex-VZW S7, and it runs quite nicely, thank you - in fact, it's not going anywhere until T-Mobile releases proper Oreo firmware - SE9 and all.) It's faster than stock, and it's faster than L7 v. 4 - which it replaced - therefore, unless I absolutely have to, I have absolutely no reason to fire it. I have been rusing and abusing the firmware as I've gotten more and more comfortable; in particular, I've been extremely swap-happy with Darth Cookie - anywhere from eight to twelve(!) apps have been in my rota; with stock N, I was lucky to be comfortable with three. So I have beta firmware from one carrier on a phone originally from a second carrier, but is actually on a third carrier using the towers of a fourth - yet nary a complaint.
