Hey guys, so I've been using Trigger (formerly NFC Task Launcher) for a while now. Everyone is always talking about Tasker though. To me, it seems like Trigger is simpler to use. Does Tasker have a lot more functionality? I was thinking of buying the app, especially since there's a pebble integration app for it, but I was just wondering what the differences between the two are. I also bought the extra features from Trigger which include geofence/battery/time/charging/headphone triggers so I am able to create tasks for those.

Trigger is user-friendly, and you can set up a lot of cool automation stuff.
Tasker takes tons of time and effort to learn, but, if you become proficient in it, you can program your device to do almost anything.

Yeah, this ^^
There are lots of things that appear to do what Tasker does. Nothing comes close though. It really depends how far down the rabbit hole you're wanting to go. Tasker is a steep learning curve but its limitations are minimal. Its worth it if you identify a need

Thanks guys. I should think of a goal. At the moment I was just curious what type of other things I can do with Tasked that I can't with Trigger. I know its a vague question but what would you say is a more beginner task that you can do with Tasked that Trigger doesn't allow?

Im not familiar with trigger but there's a tasker thread in themes and apps with some examples in it

Some examples:
Automatically...
- use VPN when connecting to any Wifi network other than at home
- turn on screen lock when you are outdoors, and turn it off when you're indoors
- use a different browser for different webpages
- freeze/defrost apps
- receive a notification that you need to pick up some items at the supermarket, with a pop-up shopping list, but only if there are items on the list, and only when you are passing by the market, and only if it's between 5 and 8 pm on a weekday
You get the idea.

Right now, I only have a task to locate my phone with gps with a special text. I am still learning and need to play around with it some more. But I had some other simple tasks that were handy. (wifi on in certain locations, turning off ringer at school).

Ah, kind of like that findmyphone app we talked about in another thread. Cool.
Paul O'Brien (Modaco) tweeted quite some time ago that he was going to post all his tasker tasks on his forums, but if he did I missed them over there. He's a sharp dev and seems to really like Tasker.
Hi, I hope I'm posting in the right forum here!
Several people have said that the following is possible, but nobody knows how to actually do it!
I want to make tasker switch my default browser whenever I have mobile data enabled. The task would be pretty similar to the "switch input method" function, but I can't figure out how to do this.
Is it possible?

May I bump this?
I'm searching everywhere for a hint of whether my task is possible:
I have a plan that consists of 200 minutes, and unlimited calling to my 'Fav 10'.. I also have a data cap of 1Gig. I would like for Tasker to keep track of my minutes used (rounding up as my carrier does not bill by the second), and once it reaches a defined count (200), it'd switch my default phone dialer over to Skype for ONLY the phone numbers that are not part of my Favourite Ten (or Dell Voice, however Google Voice is not available in Canada at the moment).
Skype rates are 3cents/minute, compared to 45cents for every extra minute on my plan; it is possible to $3+tac for call forwarding, but it doesn't seem to let me exclude callers from the feature. Also, I'm trying to live within certain budgets, as I am a student.
As well, I would like to be presented with an option box, to use either my native phone dialer or Skype, if I am approaching my 1gb cap (even a MB over will cost me a large chunk of money).
So... I'm searching and continuously searching... but I ask for anyone's help who may have.
Thanks a lot everyone..
Ryan
I think it's doable, at least some of it, but you would need someone who knows a lot about the logic syntaxes in Tasker and their limitations, which I unfortunately don't.

Thanks for the insight.
After only having Tasker for a few days, just by what I wrote above I can definitely see it as maybe possible.
But, as like you, I don't know enough of this to even begin, I'm afraid.
I'll keep an eye on this thread and bump it every so often until I give up, or until I'm told to stop

This is not an exact "set default application", but you can try this. Make the task with shortcut (and call it myBrowser). This task will run a different apps depending on the conditions (WiFi, Mobile Data, etc.).

Prerequisites:
1. Root access
2. Tasker installed
It depends on the Action/Mime Type that you want to change but for opening an url in a non-default browser this works - I tested it.
Create new task: Misc>Send Intent
Action: android.intent.action.VIEW
Cat: None
Mime blank
Data: "your url"
Extra blank
Package: com.android.browser or com.webbrowserminiapp or "the package of whatever browser you want to use"
Class blank
Target: Activity
The rest is peace of cake.

Do not understand?
You talking about an app?
From Microsoft? You think they be busy with the WM thing? (which I care less about)
Yes it is an app that is similar to tasker. You program it on the website and then install the app and it automates certain things. As of right now it is only available on Android

I'll check it out because apparently I'm too stupid to use Tasker.
I tried to figure it out but I got lost.
Apparently, users hate it so far. The app requires your Facebook login, which is ridiculous. Its also being speculated that the app is farming data about your behavior through this app, and passing it to Faacebook.

I see a lot of the bad reviews seem to be about the facebook login, didnt see much about the actual product. Did not see much about the farming data and such.
I actually think this is a good idea. Facebook is a solid method of identification, and can be used cross platform. It may be true microsoft is giving an android exclusive (temporarily) as a beta test. When/if they roll it out to microsoft/apple phones they would not have to change their authentication model. It would be ridiculous to request "Live" for windows phones, "Apple ID" for iphones, and google ID for android users. This simplifies the process and allows me to change phones easier. I am not a fb advocate, in fact I personally dont like logging in to sites and such using my fb page, but as I said I do understand it. Clearly the fb authentification is respected, if the New York legislature thinks it should be required to comment on any webpage
http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/05/anonymous-online-speech-ban/
(Not getting into a political debate lol but the facebook model "works").
EDIT: I do not use tasker and am not an experienced android user, but I may try this out and attempt to give feedback.

Tasker is actually pretty simple to use, once you understand what its asking for.
Forexample lets make a program that silences your Ringer, Turns off WiFi and Bluetooth every Mon-Fri 8:30am - 3:30pm (Work day).
First, it asks you for the Profile Name, This is just something to identify the task. Lets call this Work.
Next it asks you for the "First Context" This can be considered your first "Variable" for us we want it to be Monday thru Friday. So we click "day"
then Change the "Month" to "Week Day", and Select Mon-Friday.
Click the Green Check mark.
Now it asks for a Task. This is what you want to do, so click New Task: And Name it, lets name it "Vibrate,Wifi,BT"
Now we can click the Plus in the bottom right and it brings up a menu of all the possible things we can mess with. For this instance, lets click Audio, then Silent mode. Now we want Silent mode to turn on, so change the "mode" to On click the Check mark
Now Click the plus, to add wifi and Bt off. Then click the Check mark.
Now to add the time, click and hold on your context, then click add. Now you can add "time" and set your times.
All Done.
That was an example of a simple program. Tasker can do a lot more, so explore and test

I agree. Tasker is WAY to involved to try and set up the simplest of tasks. I played with it for about an hour and uninstalled it.
Tasker is the best app I've ever owned. It's simple to set up if you just stop and look at what each thing is.
I started playing around with this today, had a few interesting ideas but there are still quite a few issues and limited api usage available.
This could be a pretty powerful tool if they open up the api's, easier for most than tasker, and can be as complex as you can code.
also i prefer to do all my programming on the pc and transfer to the device which on{x} provides.
Never used tasker so can't compare. But, onx seem fine so far if you like to get your hands dirty in JavaScript. You can still use published recepies if you are no into coding. It is still very buggy and consumes a lot of battery juice.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Good thing with Tasker is that it doesn't require any programming knowledge. This obviously requires knowledge of javascript to get the full potential.
I have read a bit about Tasker and never ended up getting it in the past, but I ran into someone (online) who said it was a must-buy.
I was wondering what people here think... Is it that great? Is out more beneficial for those who might not root their phones?
For the tasker fans...can you give me one or two examples of "tasks" you have set so I can get a feel for its potential?

You can take a look at
h**p://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index
There are many Infos about Tasker and it's Profiles.
I use it longer and i love it.

Me too long time user ~2 years now and very happy with the abilities although never used the very sophisticated ones...
I bought both Tasker & Locale at the same time a couple of years ago. Tasker is no doubt more powerful, but Locale works better for me. So simple to setup, and works perfectly. You set a 'Default' condition that is active if no other conditions are met, you then set different profiles for different locations\times\actions\application conditions and stack them. If two profiles have the same triggers, the one higher up will override the lower. I've attached some screenshots for examples
I also used Llama for a while, its free, and very good.
Also, if we are suggesting some additional profile software, take a look on Automate-It...
I've been using Tasker for over a year now and it's great. I have automatic sound profiles for home, work and sleep time. It uses tower location and switches sound profiles when I get into range. I also mad ecustom vibrate pattern for the wife. Set up profiles and widgets to mark my car location and navigate back to it. I can send a text to my phone if I lose it on vibrate to turn ringer on. Also have one where I can text my phone and it will text back a Google Maps link with its location. I have one that brings up an app menu when I plug in my headphones. Many more uses.
Check out the forums and wiki for it. A lot of people have gotten very creative with their profiles.

Ok. Thanks guys.. I will loo into it. I know I do a lot of repetitive steps during the day, and it would be nice to create something as a shortcut.
I suppose I should play with it.
Does it know how to open any app? Can it use all haptic sensors? I mean is it like a Siri without the silliness?
And finally, two other apps were brought up here: "Automate It" and "Locale". So, these apps are just like tasker, but less involved??
I will go study the wiki... Thanks!

Remember: Tasker isn't always easy stuff, especially when you're a beginner. So download these profiles and start reading and trying.
Tasker is a great app, but I found the learning curve to be steeeeeeeeep. I've been try out a similar app called Llama. I haven't dug into it very deeply but the interface seems a bit easier to understand (at least for me). Might be worth a look.

I am not to worried about a learning curve... I am sure it has one, but if it were that great of an app, that would be the fun part.
But since I don't know how to write apps for Android...which would be singing obviously with the most control over the phone... can you give me an idea of something Tasker can't do? I read all the wiki profiles and scenes and everything, and it does sound like it could be good at some point when I need a great deal of automation, but that's not so much the case... But then again, I am sure I am not thinking of something. I am imagining all of the sensors for movement, temperature, light... Plus time, and statuses of apps (like new email), or any other thing that could be deemed an "event", and I just can't think of anything that fascinating to try and create.
Probably should just learn flex.

Has anyone come across a Tasker to Gear app other than TaskS2, which is kludgy and frequently disconnects? I contacted the prolific tasker plugin creator (AutoWear, AutoPebble, AutoNotification, etc), and he says there's not enough interest in the Gear to create an AutoGear plugin. VERY unfortunate. Tasker is desperately needed on this watch. If Samsung Pay ever stops working with Pixel, I'm done with Gear.
I'd even pay $20 or more for a quality, working plugin.
+1
I agree, there's so much I could do with a Tasker type app for the Gear S3.
Try contacting the dev of TasGear.
It was better than TaskS2.
The disconnect issue happens when system optimization or any 3rd party optimization apps kill the service which talks to the watch app. Exclude TaskS2 from the optimization list and it should work fine
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
TaskS2 only controls profiles on Tasker on your phone. Being able to control the watch is what would be fantastic.
It's a bit complicated, and very much self-service, but you can get Tasker functionality with Wearable Widgets. When you use it in app form (as opposed to the watch face) it'll send touches to the phone.
This means you can use widget crafters to run tasks. I'm using Zooper Widgets, but you need the paid version of that one. Pretty much any roll-you-own widget app that can talk to Tasker should work. You can build a simple or complex GUI to run whatever you want.

I imagine that'll suck the battery though, given it's pushing widgets from the phone to the watch.
In my case, I'd like to have things like when my phone is put into silent mode, the watch also goes into silent mode. When I dismiss my phone alarm in the morning, turn the watch brightness to full and enable AOD.
That sort of thing would be amazing, not sure this would be achievable with that method. if it was, it would be rather messy I think.

The silent part is possible but the rest is not. Currently, Samsung gives very limited control to the watch settings.
Just FYI. Developer of TaskS2 just said he will be updating his app (in response to suggestion it had been abandoned with no updates in a year). It's too bad the AutoXXX developer isn't interested, but I appreciate anything I can get on this watch. I miss my pebble with tasker
any new news on this?
