I have read a bit about Tasker and never ended up getting it in the past, but I ran into someone (online) who said it was a must-buy.
I was wondering what people here think... Is it that great? Is out more beneficial for those who might not root their phones?
For the tasker fans...can you give me one or two examples of "tasks" you have set so I can get a feel for its potential?

You can take a look at
h**p://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index
There are many Infos about Tasker and it's Profiles.
I use it longer and i love it.

Me too long time user ~2 years now and very happy with the abilities although never used the very sophisticated ones...
I bought both Tasker & Locale at the same time a couple of years ago. Tasker is no doubt more powerful, but Locale works better for me. So simple to setup, and works perfectly. You set a 'Default' condition that is active if no other conditions are met, you then set different profiles for different locations\times\actions\application conditions and stack them. If two profiles have the same triggers, the one higher up will override the lower. I've attached some screenshots for examples
I also used Llama for a while, its free, and very good.
Also, if we are suggesting some additional profile software, take a look on Automate-It...
I've been using Tasker for over a year now and it's great. I have automatic sound profiles for home, work and sleep time. It uses tower location and switches sound profiles when I get into range. I also mad ecustom vibrate pattern for the wife. Set up profiles and widgets to mark my car location and navigate back to it. I can send a text to my phone if I lose it on vibrate to turn ringer on. Also have one where I can text my phone and it will text back a Google Maps link with its location. I have one that brings up an app menu when I plug in my headphones. Many more uses.
Check out the forums and wiki for it. A lot of people have gotten very creative with their profiles.

Ok. Thanks guys.. I will loo into it. I know I do a lot of repetitive steps during the day, and it would be nice to create something as a shortcut.
I suppose I should play with it.
Does it know how to open any app? Can it use all haptic sensors? I mean is it like a Siri without the silliness?
And finally, two other apps were brought up here: "Automate It" and "Locale". So, these apps are just like tasker, but less involved??
I will go study the wiki... Thanks!

Also check out the new Microsoft app on{x}. Very similar to what these apps do. I started a thread with links and info here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697840
Try this profile: yanawa
Remember: Tasker isn't always easy stuff, especially when you're a beginner. So download these profiles and start reading and trying.
Tasker is a great app, but I found the learning curve to be steeeeeeeeep. I've been try out a similar app called Llama. I haven't dug into it very deeply but the interface seems a bit easier to understand (at least for me). Might be worth a look.

I am not to worried about a learning curve... I am sure it has one, but if it were that great of an app, that would be the fun part.
But since I don't know how to write apps for Android...which would be singing obviously with the most control over the phone... can you give me an idea of something Tasker can't do? I read all the wiki profiles and scenes and everything, and it does sound like it could be good at some point when I need a great deal of automation, but that's not so much the case... But then again, I am sure I am not thinking of something. I am imagining all of the sensors for movement, temperature, light... Plus time, and statuses of apps (like new email), or any other thing that could be deemed an "event", and I just can't think of anything that fascinating to try and create.
Probably should just learn flex.

Right now, I only have a task to locate my phone with gps with a special text. I am still learning and need to play around with it some more. But I had some other simple tasks that were handy. (wifi on in certain locations, turning off ringer at school).

Ah, kind of like that findmyphone app we talked about in another thread. Cool.
Paul O'Brien (Modaco) tweeted quite some time ago that he was going to post all his tasker tasks on his forums, but if he did I missed them over there. He's a sharp dev and seems to really like Tasker.
Hey guys,
I just bought my NS and I'm curious about the NFC technology, but there really isn't anything to try it with here in Spain. So far I've only been able to tag my subway card, and even that gives me just an "unidentified tag" message. So I'm having a hard time figuring what use you can give it.
Do you guys give it any actual use in your daily lives? If so, can you share your experiences?
So I guess there aren't a lot of uses yet... :-(
Google will partner with MasterCard and Citigroup to allow its consumers to use their phones to make payments.
I didn't use it with anything until I decided to try to make it useful. Now I use it daily (as well as quite a few others) and don't think I'd want a phone without it given the convenience.

It seems that instead of using gps location variables to set your phone settings like Locale, it would be easy to have an RFID/NFC tag on your desk, car, home that you would place your phone near to configure settings for that location. Ringtones, screen brightness, wifi, etc could all be set.
krohnjw,
That seems like the kind of thing that could be really, really useful for the GTD app we're working on. Would you be interested in giving us a hand?

Essentially this is exactly how it's being used by most, myself included. Rcently I've added support for "profiles" so that a single tag can toggle between 2 defined profiles. So one car tag could be hit when entering to go into car mode, and the same tag hit when leaving to return to Home mode or something else.

Sure - what are you looking to do with it? Feel free to PM me.
I use NFC to trigger different profiles on my phone. Such as my car profile where I enable bluetooth and start up my navigation app.
Hi all,
I hope this is the right section... tried developers section, but i am not allowed to post because of limitted amount of posts (dont want to post if its spam )
So, i did a search on google, a search in the market and a search on this forum and could not find what i was looking for.
I am a complete noob with developing apps and dont have the aspiration to do it in the future....
Here is my idea... hope somebody could react if it is possible at all or maybe that it is a completely stupid idea
My wife and i both have a htc desire and i was searching for a babyphone through wifi.... like i said... could not find it.
What i want:
- Place one device in the room from the baby when it is connected to the internet (wifi or 3g)
- The other device i would like to to take to friends ~600 meters away.
- With the phone i have with me i would like to connect to the other phone (through internet wifi or 3g) and hear what is going on at the room from the baby. (Maybe through a webpage or something like that???)
Hope it is clear to you guys what i ment.
I think it should be possible... something like skype or so?? Together with some options from the standard baby monitors in the market i think this could be a completely new app. Of course it could be extended in the future if you could use sound and the cam from the android device and have live video from the babys room....
104 views and no reaction... Is it a stupid idea or something impossible?

Actually, a Babyphone App is a very good idea
Some of the applications that allow for you to use your phone as a webcam also allow for audio capture, so they could be used similarly to what you want.
but can these apps you mentioned sent the captured video/audio to the android phone from my wife??
Noise Alert
While this is not for a constant audio connection, I used this for a baby monitor when in a bind.
You have to tweak the detection settings to suit your sleeper (snorers/rollers), but once you get it set right, if the wake up and cry the App will call your other phone and you can listen to the room at that time.
Not sure if you can set it to restart the app for false alarms, but logically this is probably in there.

Still this is not the best option for me... I want to have sound all the time... If you have kids you will understand.
Other thing is that I want to do it via internet...cheaper
Yeah i have kids. I bought a wireless video baby monitor with two way comminication and support for up to 4 cameras because i couldnt find an android solution.
Someone should definitely develop this idea.

Hi Master_B82,
I had the same idea, so that I think that it is not too bad ;-)
Actually, I was working hard over the last months in developing such an App, as I need it for myself, too.
The good news: I finished a first, fully functioning version. It is available on android market as "BabyPhone Mobile":

I hope, you like it
If you have any ideas on improving the App... Just tell me!

Do not understand?
You talking about an app?
From Microsoft? You think they be busy with the WM thing? (which I care less about)
Yes it is an app that is similar to tasker. You program it on the website and then install the app and it automates certain things. As of right now it is only available on Android

I'll check it out because apparently I'm too stupid to use Tasker.
I tried to figure it out but I got lost.
Apparently, users hate it so far. The app requires your Facebook login, which is ridiculous. Its also being speculated that the app is farming data about your behavior through this app, and passing it to Faacebook.

I see a lot of the bad reviews seem to be about the facebook login, didnt see much about the actual product. Did not see much about the farming data and such.
I actually think this is a good idea. Facebook is a solid method of identification, and can be used cross platform. It may be true microsoft is giving an android exclusive (temporarily) as a beta test. When/if they roll it out to microsoft/apple phones they would not have to change their authentication model. It would be ridiculous to request "Live" for windows phones, "Apple ID" for iphones, and google ID for android users. This simplifies the process and allows me to change phones easier. I am not a fb advocate, in fact I personally dont like logging in to sites and such using my fb page, but as I said I do understand it. Clearly the fb authentification is respected, if the New York legislature thinks it should be required to comment on any webpage
http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/05/anonymous-online-speech-ban/
(Not getting into a political debate lol but the facebook model "works").
EDIT: I do not use tasker and am not an experienced android user, but I may try this out and attempt to give feedback.

Tasker is actually pretty simple to use, once you understand what its asking for.
Forexample lets make a program that silences your Ringer, Turns off WiFi and Bluetooth every Mon-Fri 8:30am - 3:30pm (Work day).
First, it asks you for the Profile Name, This is just something to identify the task. Lets call this Work.
Next it asks you for the "First Context" This can be considered your first "Variable" for us we want it to be Monday thru Friday. So we click "day"
then Change the "Month" to "Week Day", and Select Mon-Friday.
Click the Green Check mark.
Now it asks for a Task. This is what you want to do, so click New Task: And Name it, lets name it "Vibrate,Wifi,BT"
Now we can click the Plus in the bottom right and it brings up a menu of all the possible things we can mess with. For this instance, lets click Audio, then Silent mode. Now we want Silent mode to turn on, so change the "mode" to On click the Check mark
Now Click the plus, to add wifi and Bt off. Then click the Check mark.
Now to add the time, click and hold on your context, then click add. Now you can add "time" and set your times.
All Done.
That was an example of a simple program. Tasker can do a lot more, so explore and test

I agree. Tasker is WAY to involved to try and set up the simplest of tasks. I played with it for about an hour and uninstalled it.
Tasker is the best app I've ever owned. It's simple to set up if you just stop and look at what each thing is.
I started playing around with this today, had a few interesting ideas but there are still quite a few issues and limited api usage available.
This could be a pretty powerful tool if they open up the api's, easier for most than tasker, and can be as complex as you can code.
also i prefer to do all my programming on the pc and transfer to the device which on{x} provides.
Never used tasker so can't compare. But, onx seem fine so far if you like to get your hands dirty in JavaScript. You can still use published recepies if you are no into coding. It is still very buggy and consumes a lot of battery juice.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Good thing with Tasker is that it doesn't require any programming knowledge. This obviously requires knowledge of javascript to get the full potential.
Hey guys, I got tasker a long while ago and only really gave it a chance a few days ago and I think I have the basics down
I feel like I'm doing things inefficiently, and I can't work out what the variables tab is for. My current proudest achievements are wifi on when home auto of when away, not using gps, and when headset plugged in volume up phone silent=off ect
I'm currently using 4 profiles crammed into a project just for turning mobile data on and off during work hours excluding my dinner hour, surely I'm doing this wrong?
I also have no idea how to set multiple contexts, eg, tasks based on the month, day and time all at once in one profile?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated by a lowly noob

first, make a profile with one context (maybe based on day in your case?). when it's done, long press on context and you will get an option to add new context (here you may want to add time). Same method applies for adding multiple tasks to one profile.
The task will be performed when all conditions are true.
