First thanks everyone for all your help and knowledge. I'm fairly new to android but have been flashing more ROMs then pictures lately and I'm wondering what are the differences between the two. In terms of software.I flash skyrocket ROMs without a second thought but some work and some can't find virgin network.

Advice for a Newb?

I have an Inspire 4G/Desire HD and while this isn't my first android phone (Backflip and Aria) This is the first time I seriously considered rooting. I don't find battery life to be that much of an issue, but I want to root for the customization options i.e font changes and the such, however I don't know where to begin. Im confused about doing NANDroid backups and flashing roms and radios. sorry if a similiar topic has been posted already. And if I do root I'm looking for something with gingerbread for my phone.
BTw. My phone received the 4G enabling update back in april

For the HTC Inspire, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1018 and for the HTC Desire HD, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=765. Choose any rom you like. Have fun.
P.S. - You should have posted this in your device specific forum.
I wasn't sure if it belonged there because I was asking for general advice on rooting, but thank you for your help. Is there anyway for me to get this moved to the Inspire 4G forum

A moderator can move it. Maybe you could ask one but remember they are very busy. Udk is a moderator for this forum so he could move it.
Okay, thank you

Question about porting a rom

Sorry in advance if this should be in Q&A (mod please move if inappropriate) but my question has to do with development so....
Anyway.. was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of any guides or helpful threads that would help teach me how to port a rom. I am wanting to start to learn how to make custom ROMS and figured this would be a good place to start as the heavy lifting has already been done by the real devs...
Specifically looking to port lets say a nexus S rom for use with the NS4g for now.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
I was wondering the same thing. It seems like so much good is coming from the Nexus S section, that I would like to help bring it to the 4g side.

Yes, I know. Me too as well, but there's no guides on porting or I just can't find any. If anyone knows any guides on porting, point us fellows in that direction. thanks!
Man... kinda sux... no one can help at all?
First, this belongs in Q & A, hence no answer , second, it should be pretty easy, nandroid, switch out rild, and rils, make correct edits to build prop, and a kernel for ns4g and you should be good to go.
Are there any guides out there that perhaps detail this process a little bit, I would like to start porting some ns roms over to ns4g. I followed the steps provided by the previous post, and got most everything booting for the new miui rom with ICS however the wifi still doesn't work and it will not allow me to flash a different kernel as afterwards it refuses to boot. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

New to rooting and custom ROMs, few questions...

Hi everyone,
I'm fairly new to customizing my android phone. Have only had a Galaxy SII before, which I flashed to CyanogenMod.
Now I might be interested in flashing my new One S, particularly due to better battery life but also for enhanced possibilities.
I can of course read the guides on how to root & flash (although it seems a lot more complicated than on my Galaxy SII).
What I'm more worried about is, how do I flash back to stock, if that should be necessary later on? Is it very complicated?
Now, I actually like Sense 4.0, HTC keyboard and some other HTC things, so I would like to flash a ROM with Sense. I've looked through the forum and concluded, that either Noble or Trickdroid might be suitable for me. I know that it's not polite to shoot down the one or other ROM, but could some of you tell me the differences between the two? I can't really point them out myself.
Thank you very much!
Best regards
Casper

If you can read, you would know the differences between the 2 roms, and you would also know that THIS IS DEVELOPMENT SECTION, NOT Q&A !!
Wrong Section.
Sorry, how to move?

Harsh.
But yes, it is the wrong section. A mod will probably move this post soon enough.
That said, I just read them over. They look to be mostly the same. Stock with a few tweaks here and there. Noble looked the better of the two to me.
Both have some very vague language though
Fully optimized and tweaked
RAM optimizations
Speed optimizations
Excellent battery life!
Better CPU Performance

You can always just take a backup and flash each one and give them a day or two test run.
Moved To Q&A
Please post questions in the Q&A section

Do you know how to flash stock rom and un-root, if it'll be necessary?

[Q] How to port from a device with different hardware?

Hey XDA,
I have been around for a while, gone through two phones and have had no problems rooting, flashing ROMs, etc. thanks to all of the amazing people on the site. I have come to a point though, that I am interested in learning to port ROMs (and maybe even build a ROM from AOSP, but I am taking this one step at a time). I have looked all over the Chef Central -> Android section and the Q & A section and have been unable to find a solid guide on porting ROMs from a device with different hardware than the device you want to port to. I am sorry if this has been answered elsewhere and I try to contribute as much as I can. I hope I am not inconveniencing anyone too much. If a thread already exists that can help me out, I would greatly appreciate a link, then you can close this thread.
I am only trying to port between the ATT and internation GS3s, so it shouldn't be too hard, right?
The ROM I am trying to port is PA 2.99 beta8.
Thanks,
#TekGadgt

I will give it a go! Thanks. I had noticed this one, but was unsure if it would work between devices with different hardware. I see now that it does. I will work on that ASAP. One more question though, what do you do about devices with different resolutions? I noticed the guide is for devices with the same resolution.

What is a good ROM?

Hi, I am currently using a Samsung Galaxy S2 (SGH-T989) for T-Mobile and I might be switching to Verizon and getting the Samsung Galaxy S3. I rooted my S2 and installed the Jedi Mind Trick only a week ago and love it. I had no lag or issues other than an app or 2 crashing. Basically, I want to see what everyone is using for this phone and carrier (Verizon/SG3)...Is there a ROM called the Jedi Mind Trick here for this S3 on Verizon?
Thanks in advance...
Wrong section and there are already numerous threads asking for ROM recommendations.

Development section is only for ROM and kernel release threads. Your question thread should have gone in the Q&A section. Plus there are already quite a few threads asking for ROM recommendations or what ROMs people are running. Search the general and Q&A sections a little and you will find the threads and perhaps get an idea of what ROM you might want to run based on the responses in those already existing threads.

1) wrong section.
2) how hard would it be to look in the development threads and look to see if that ROM is available? The search button really was created for purpose not just looks .
but this phone is great, you'll love it, and there are a number of wonderful ROMs to choose from.

Thanks! Looking forward to changing carriers..
Why is this in development?!!!!
Also why is this even asked?
Rule 1 search before posting would have shown you dozens of these threads closed
They are ALL the best. There are no shortcuts and no one can tell you what is best for YOU
Read about the software that will drastically change your $700 device
