Possible kernel screwup. Need help! - General Questions and Answers

Hello o'wise developers,
I'm a flashoholic... Switching android os all the time, for what I like the most. Using the international Samsung S4, i9505.
Long-story-short: flashed a ported version of a MIUI os that I liked, and wifi did not work. Figured it was a bad kernel, since it seems like the software had no connection what so ever with the wifi hardware. So I looked around and found a promising thread on a forum, that had what I needed. This was a .tar file that I downloaded and flashed with Odin v3.07.
Next, hard-bricked: no boot, no recovery, only Download Mode. Found a topic on xda that guided me through repairing a "dead s4". The torutial should work for both i9500 and i9505 it said. Luckily it seemed to work.
Next, soft-bricked: I flashed an old backup and got back on the horse..
At present: Mostly things works, but everytime someone calls me I get the "Android.phone stopped working" message and then hang up the caller. Also at times when just "wabbling" around doing nothing, sometimes the screen freezes and the system hangs..
I'm sure I've got the wrong files flashed down below again... On this level, I don't know what to do. Can somebody help me repair my phone?

[Q] Mixing ROMs

Okay, I have G9300 phone, that needs this ROM;
Model number: e1920_v77_zlh_fwvga
Android version: 4.1.1
Base version: MAUI.11AMD.W12.22.SP.V15.P2
Kernel version: 3.4.0
Build Number: e1920_v77_zlh_fwvga_20130128
But since I can not find it anywhere online to download it AND nobody wants to make a copy of their own system, I was thinking mybe I can mix "boot.img" and "uboot.bin" from two different ROMs..
There is this ROM "e1920_v77_zlh_9p017_asx".. this one works nice, but I can not see anything that is happening on the screen, somehow I enabled debugging and now I can see my cellphone screen live on my computer with some tools but that is just not good enough..
And there is this ROM "e1901_v77_jbla668_9p017_fwvga_3s".. with this one I can see everything that is happening on display but, my touchscreen is not reacting at all, and only Power Button is working (I can not even get in recovery mode)
So I wanted to insert lcd drivers from boot.img of "e1901_v77_jbla668_9p017_fwvga_3s" into "e1920_v77_zlh_9p017_asx".. and that would make my cellphone alive again..
Also I have Clockworkmod recovery 6.0.1.2 backups of my original system "e1920_v77_zlh_fwvga".. But I can't seem to be able to fix problem with that..
If anyone has any idea please post it here..
Regards,
Emrah.

[Q] Stable ROM? Baseband problems?

First of all, hello! Since it's my first post here, and I am new to Android, I am sorry if I fail to provide all the needed information. Let's cut to the chase then!
I have an LG Optimus 3D (p920) and I am struggling to find a good ROM.
The one I have now works, but it is very slow (I only have about 60 mb RAM left, I have to keep killing processes, but they come right back).
The details are:
Model Number:
LG-P920
Android version:
2.3.5
Baseband version:
L6260_MODEM_SIC_01.1042.00
Kernel version:
2.6.35.7+
Build Number:
GRJ90
Software Version:
LGP920-V21e-Apr-19-2012
I have been lurking around the forums in search for other ROMs, and I tried some of them, but most got me to the same problem.
I tried CyanogenMod and a couple of other ROMs and this is what happens:
Using CyanogenMod I get a connection to the provider but it goes out randomly and, although it still shows me I got a signal, I am unable to make or receive calls.
With other ROMs, the problem persists, I am unable to connect to my mobile network, this time being represented just by the crossed signal bars.
I have just tried ThiaiZO3DV2.7,1GB, which lead to no connection.
Also, I tried JellyBam, but I am unable to complete even the first configuration (After completing it, the phone asks for a reboot - if I manage to get that far) and then keeps restarting every time it boots.
I've read around that this might be a baseband problem, I downloaded GetRil on all the softwares I tried. I allow it to have superuser privileges, I download and install the recommended baseband, reboot, still no network connection.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your time!
Regards, BrreaKer.
Later Edit: The ROM I am using now is a custom one, but I can't seem to remember where I got it. When I first bought the phone, it had Android 3.1.3
Also, I haven't got the slightest idea what's with Kernels ( I know what a kernel is, as a base idea, but nothing in detail )
I have a lot of things to learn about Android, and I figured this would be the best place to seek guidance.

[Q] I can't load CWM on my SGS 4G (T-Mobile)

Hello all,
Okay, I admit that I am gonna get a lot of "use the search tool first" replies, but please hear me out. I have done my fair share of searching. Its not that I haven't found anything, its just the things I found are useless for this SGS 4G. I really wanted to install Cyanogen Mo on the SGS (its not actually mine, a friend asked me to do it since he saw my old SGS GT-I9000 running CM).
I am gonna try and give a detailed report . The phone was originally from T-Mobile and now unlocked permanently. Its running firmware version 2.3.3 that I installed just recently. I found out that I can't install CWM on the stock kernel or bootloader or whatever and I needed a new of the thing. So I went on searching and searching....found a handful of help but none work. Every method breaks at some point and I go to the "firmware update failed" thing on the phone, which I then install 2.3.3 again using ODIN and try another method. I have tried a lot of things. Hemidall, ODIN, SuperOneClick, and a lot of gibbrish-sounding methods. None work. I am now running 2.3.3. Here are some infos:
ABOUT PHONE:
Model Number: SGH-T959V
Firmware Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: T959VUVKF1
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-T959VUVKF1-CL270364
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.VUVKF1
The files I used to flash to 2.3.3 using ODIN v1.85:
PIT: Hawk_Sidekick_VibrantPlus_831.pit
PDA: CODE_T959VUVKF1_CL270364_REV00_user_low_noship.tar.md5
PHONE: T959VUVKF1-Phone-CL1020302.tar.md5
CSC: SGH-T959V-CSC-TMB-VIBRANTP.tar.md5
I hope the above infos are enough. So, can anyone help me and point me to the right direction on how to install CWM and then install CM10 or 9 on my friends SGS 4G?
Thanks,
Tamrat
Hmmm, an interesting set of binaries, ones that don't ring a bell with me. I'm used to seeing T959VUVKJ6.
Where did you find those? Half curiosity, half trying to understand the problem, half since much of the "old" images for the phones got lost when Multiupload and what have you were shut down.
For the SGS4G, the kernel, root file system, and recovery file system are all in "boot.img" -- flash one, you flash them all. They can be flashed through Odin (assuming you really like Windows), heimdall (multi-platform), through recovery, or from a root command line (for the adventurous only).
I would say the most robust way to get where you need to be would be to use Lumin's guide to make sure you've got a viable Gingerbread set-up going, then flash something reliable to get you to MTD, like TeamAcid's CM9.
From there, you should know that some of the KK ROMs use slightly different MTD partitioning and aren't a "just flash this ROM and keep your data" kind of thing.

A long day Googling... and then a site turned up. One thing I forgot to mention was, before I installed this firmware, I had to use the "remove battery->plug usb->press the button combos->insert the battery" to enter download mode, but now I juts have to press vol down and power button.
Thanks for the reply,
Failure again
UPDATE:::
I tried to update to 2.3.6 as the guide suggests and I also wanted a clean stock OS in case the old one was not. But once again updating to 2.3.6 has been a pain. Kies Mini recognizes the phone but it doesn't recognize the firmware running on the phone. And also, firmware update is impossible since the button is greyed out.
I googled again and found the official 2.3.6 firmware for the phone (file name: T959VUVKJ6-REV00-home-low-CL694130.tar.md5) and tried flashing it using ODIN; absolutely no luck. It fails at the stage which says Slb.bin. Restarting the phone after that gives a "firmware upgrade failure" display. Only way to wake up the phone is to flash the previous OS back.
I am really confused here.
*********************EDIT***************
Some how, after like 10 retires and fiddling with ODIN, it finally flashed 2.3.6 to the SGS 4G. Still, fingers crossed.
*********************EDIT 2***************
Finally, its all working fine now. Thank you @jeffsf, thank you very much.

forgot an important step and now my IEMI number is gone........
do i throw the phone now, or is there any other way???
Don't throw your phone away! How do you know that you have "no IMEI" on your phone? We'll go from there.
Hopefully, you've backed up your data before starting to play around with ROMS. If so just load your backed up efs folder onto your storage & use Root Explorer to drop it over your existing one , it will overwrite your imei file & you will be good as new.

I'm also in need of help, I have been running SlimSaber since last weekend, was wanting to try out Beanstalk. First full wipe, install & reboot wipe again, reinstall etc as per Dao's OP, but after the first install, it won't boot past the kernel splash. Tried again with same result. Decided to click it back to stock & start over, using Gremlin Remover (odin). Then saw that others were having similar issue so I tried to load in build from April1st.
But now it only boots back into recovery, won't boot to the OS ( everything indicated install was complete & no errors.)
1 clicked back again & just tried to put SlimSaber back on again, but have the same problem, will only boot into recovery.
I had to first load CM9 to get CWM 6.xx so I could install kk using TWRP
What am I not doing correctly? Thanks for any suggestions.
Flash kernel
Reboot recovery
Wipe all partitions
(Reboot recovery for good measure and wipe again if paranoid)
Install
Boot
If that doesn't do it, it is likely ROM or hardware.

Posted from whatever phone booted today
Since this is running GB VUVKG4, could you recommend a kernel that would work & get me to TWRP (or CWM 5.xx+)?
Either the Team Acid CM9 or Hefe Kernel should work.

Custom ROM Flashing Problems

Good day to all, ya'll have changed things a bit it appears since my last visit. Okay I don't know what is going on as I have flashed hundreds of ROM's without issue and this morning Im seeming to have all kinds of issues. Sprint Galaxy S4 rooted and Flashed for Straight talk network. I am having some kinds of problems and am not able to flash any custom ROM's. Ive tried flashing GPE 4.4.4 and Super S4 ROM and Im getting a Footers Wrong error, error #7 and Signature not verified error and then it will reboot back to the stock firmware. So being my bright self that I am I toggled the signature deal in Clockworkmod and flashed it again and the phone rebooted and started up in GPE, but I could not get a data signal nor would it allow me to even turn on the wif-fi. and now Ive got it bricked and hooked up to odin. Any suggestions, comments, beatings or there of the likes. lol thanks guys yall are great.
Custom ROM Issues
Okay good day once again....Okay the phone has booted up completely and with GPE 4.4.4 or what I assume is GPE. I have no service to the device what so ever, but it does saying preparing network in the task bar and has been saying that for 20 minutes now, I still can not turn on Wifi. When I go to about device it says the following Software Version - Unknown Hardware Version - nothing Android Version 4.4.2 Baseband Version- unknown Kernal Version 3.4.0-216929 [email protected]#1 Wed Jul 9 09:03:50 2014 Build Number - SuperS4-1.5(which means it isn't GPE it is Super S4 ROM, which is cool especially since one of your guys I think built it) and everything else their looks normal to me. So any feed back on this post please. I have to be at work in a few hours and can not do without a phone ....
Hello...! I have some questions to you.... Do you try to flash a custom rom from recovery right....?
And it says "status 7 error"?
I think the reason for this is that you are trying to flash a rom that does not match with your phone or it's not singed...! For example you are trying to flash a rom for Samsung Galaxy S 4 GT-I9500...
Difficulty installing a custom ROM on samsung galaxy S4. Pls help
Pls am having difficulty installing a custom ROM on my Samsung galaxy S4 GT-i9500 Verizon. I have already installed a custom recovery(clockworkMod 6.0.4.7) and the phone is rooted. But each time i try to boot into recovery mode this is where am stuck. i cant seem to find the custom ROM i want to flash i mean the zip file cant be seen and its already donwloaded in my phone. I have some custom ROMS already in my phone for flashing but i cant seem to see the zip file in recovery mode. I took a screenshot so you can tell me what the problem is. Thanks

Samsung S4 constantly losing connection, but still shows connected.

My girlfriend's AT&T S4 loses connection, but still shows it connected. So you never know you don't have a connection until you reboot the phone and find that you have missed 2 phone calls, 3 emails, and 15 texts. This happened with the stock Rom. I've tried a couple of different roms, but still the same outcome. I'm thinking I should have to switch to a different modem, but I'm not sure which one to use. Am I wrong and is there another solution? I'm looking for something that will work so I don't have to mess with it again. If anyone has experienced this connection loss and found a solution, please let me know what to do to fix this phone.
definitively you need to update the modem.
2 ways to achieve the update: either by a new rom firmware (http://live.samsung-updates.com/?device=GT-I9505), either by just update gsm modem/wifi fix (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50965837&postcount=2627)
But I strongly suggest before, to look at what your device model is. Mine is S4 LTE international = GT-i9505.
Don't know yours.
Hope that helps.
Ahh... a response. Thank you
So if I change the Rom, that will change the modem too? I thought the modem stayed with the phone and you had to change that separately. This can get so confusing at times. But this is good news never the less. The model number of the phone is GT-i9505G running a custom Rom ( Super-Nexus ) 4.4.4, baseband version 1337UCUFNB1, Kernel version 3.4.0-1125940 [email protected] #1
I hope this information helps you understand what I have so you can find a solution. Thank you for all your help
You're right. changing the rom doesn't update your modem unless you flash a stock firmware via odin. But read carefully as samsung at&t version is specific (meaning specific firmware).
You will find bunch of files by looking at "modem galaxy s4 i337" on xda thread. Depend on what you will find, either only modem/wifi fix either the full stock firmware, you need to update via Odin.
also a good start is to take a look at xda thread > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221
And it seems that AT&T already realease some new stock firmware > http://www.att.com/esupport/softwareUpdateArticle.jsp?sid=KB419415&cv=820&partner=LinkShare&siteId=TnL5HPStwNw-V7YmgDyzwWW7TSi7CwkqtA
I tried a Note 4 Rom first
I have a Note 3, I've had a Note 2 (I loved the macro setting and wished they'd kept it for the Note 3), so I thought I would try the Note 4 Rom on my girlfriend's problematic S4. It got stuck in a boot loop. I ended up using the link you gave me for the stock (but upgraded) AT&T Rom. I see it brought the phone from NB1 to NJ4 firmware. I'm hoping this improvement will solve the problem of a connection loss bring that is a factory firmware upgrade. She can also get OTA updates again. Thank you for your help. Now it's time to find a different Rom for my Nvidia Tegra Note 7. This thing is terribly slow after the upgrade to Lollipop!
Note 4 has a complete different hardware from S4. That's why you had boot loop.
