root explorer is a file manager, it's very simple so it's fast, has many menu n' it can access to system, edit or delete system, mount rw/ro, edit build.prop. I have been used it since I know about rooting, and I used it to access n' edit system.

Yes, this is right.
In short, you may find an application named 're-explorer' (root explore), usually you can use it to modify files that can not be accessed by normal file manager (maybe only SDCard...), it shows all files of cellphone (/etc, /system...) when device is rooted

Is there a way to save some of my apps before I flash a new ROM? I have a few that I installed while the were free but now they are paid apps or no longer in the market. (Tether apps) I am going to flash one of the Haykuro roms but want to keep these apps to install on the new ROM. Thank for any suggestions!!
Some options:
- Look on the Market for a backup app
- Look for a file manager app and copy the stuff out of /data/app and /data/app-private
- Hook up Dream to a desktop and adb pull it to the computer
- Reboot into recovery and create a nandroid backup
Thanks for the tips, when using the file mgr, when I click on data, nothing is in the file. Am i looking in the wrong area???

They're hidden files. You must show hidden files, first.

No, they're not hidden files. The problem is that /data is a protected directory. The file manager doesn't have permission to access it.

Is there any way around that?
setuid, but that's insecure and a little bit of a hassle. I'd go the adb pull way.
You could also do it all manually inside the Terminal Emulator. Use su to gain root then cp /data/app/* /sdcard/somewhere
thanks!!!!
How can I do this? I want to get the Android eating the Apple boot on my phone. Is it just a simple flash in CWM?

no you will need to find that boot animation (or create it using this guide) then you will need use a file explorer to navigate to system/resources/customize and change bootanimation.zip to bootanimation.,zip.bak.
then place the new boot animation you found (android eating an apple) and place it in the system/resources/cuustomize folder. reboot and you will see it.
So, I would have to re-flash the current ROM?

No, no, no.... In my sig you have all info what you need.
With RootExplorer or EStrong file manager you only replace a boot & downanimation.
And you must change a permits for the new file (rw-,r--,r--)

I have ES Explorer, yet can't find a way to it. U went into settings and checked off root explorer.
I downloaded Root Explorer, and got it to work. Thanks guys!
I'm becoming less of a newb!!!
folks, newbie here.
i noticed that there are 2 types of file explorer, the system file explorer that allows you browse around the /system/ directories and the media file explorer such as andro file explorer
could anyone please advise me any file explorer that allows me to access both /sdcard/ and /system/ directories please?
i stumbled upon this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=716309 that recommends root explorer, but it doesnt allow me to open /sdcard/ directories
thanks in advance
I use ES File Explorer and Root Explorer. Both give you full access to your phones file system, including /system and /sdcard.

They do, es file explorer is free, and allows you to to lan shares from pc. Just have to enable root options in settings. I have both, but I currently use es file since I can access my pc from it.

thanks kleeman for the info,
I have a rooted HTC One X ATT version, running on non ATT network (brought it to asia)
it doesnt allow me to tether out of a box nor play downloaded glumobile games.
i've browsed xdaforum and found out there are several files in root directory that need to be replaced to fix this.
so i need to access /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
(which root explorer allows me to access, but doesnt allow me to access the sdcard directory)
whereas ES only allows me to access /data/data/
did i do something wrong with the ES?
thanks again

I don't get why you think you can't access your /sdcard with Root Explorer, you can access EVERYTHING with it.
And with ES you have to go into the settings an enable the root explorer to be able to access everything.

MetalHead,
Thanks, it works! now i can access the directory path.
one last question, whenever i tried to edit /system/build.prop
it doesnt allow me to save it after editing, or replace the file with a new one.
i'm referring to this xda article which i cant reply since i'm a noob with less than 10 posts
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1714298
please help me if you dont mind.
and as for the root explorer, i have no idea why it doesnt work. one touch of back button makes it "unfortunately root explorer has terminated"
thanks again

You have to mount the file system as read/write otherwise you can't edit anything in /system. Navigate to /system then hit menu >settings, then scroll down all the way to the root settings section and check the circle next to Mount File System. You will be able to edit the build.prop after doing that.
As far as Root Explorer FC'ing on you, I dunno man I've never had it crash on me once in the 3 years I've been using it. Try deleting it and re-installing it.

No prob
I need to modify a folder under the data folder in android, I can navigate to it but don't have write access. I wish to do this without having to root my phone. I have tried various folder programs and no luck. There should be a trick out there. Please help!!! TIA
Unless there's some trick(s) I don't know of yet, which is possible as I have fallen off the rooting scene after I rooted my S6 Edge Plus but things were a lot different then, as far as I know that's a big No
What folder is it?

download Google Files. Hold the app and goto app info, In last allow both "modify system" And "install unknown app" and you can copy and move from and to data folder now.
Android 11 onwards does not allow non OEM signed apps to access data folder

I tried and I get this error
Use a file manager app that has access, such as File Manager +
Locate the folder of the app which you get permission denied prompt when pasting files or folders inside. Rename that folder to something similar. Create a new folder with the original folder name. Now paste everything inside. Run the app.

I fixed it. I installed mixplorer that supports a13. Thanks mate!
Can anyone else confirm if Mixplorer let's you read and write in the Android/data folder in Android 13? I have a pixel 6 and I've tried a few file managers and they let me go in the data folder and when I select the folder I want to open it lets me select choose to give this folder access at the bottom for all the folders I go in. The same cannot be said for my Samsung s21. it won't allow me to give access to any folder in the data directory. I was just trying to get some info before I purchase Mixplorer. I'll most likely buy it either way because I've read nothing but good things about it. any feedback will help. thanks
EDIT: I went ahead and purchased Mixplorer and I can access the Android data folders and everything just fine. I can edit files and move them as well on my Galaxy s21. it's a really beautiful UI and the app is really nice. I planned on purchasing it either way. Big ups to the dev.
