Is there a way to save some of my apps before I flash a new ROM? I have a few that I installed while the were free but now they are paid apps or no longer in the market. (Tether apps) I am going to flash one of the Haykuro roms but want to keep these apps to install on the new ROM. Thank for any suggestions!!
Some options:
- Look on the Market for a backup app
- Look for a file manager app and copy the stuff out of /data/app and /data/app-private
- Hook up Dream to a desktop and adb pull it to the computer
- Reboot into recovery and create a nandroid backup
Thanks for the tips, when using the file mgr, when I click on data, nothing is in the file. Am i looking in the wrong area???

They're hidden files. You must show hidden files, first.

No, they're not hidden files. The problem is that /data is a protected directory. The file manager doesn't have permission to access it.

Is there any way around that?
setuid, but that's insecure and a little bit of a hassle. I'd go the adb pull way.
You could also do it all manually inside the Terminal Emulator. Use su to gain root then cp /data/app/* /sdcard/somewhere
thanks!!!!

When I try and use the file explorer in DDMS for my device it just comes up as blank. I am am running JF ADP1.5 on the device and the 1.5SDK on Mac OS X.
Can someone please confirm that DDMS file explorer works for JF ADP1.5 (preferably on Mac).
Anyone have any other suggestions?
it never worked on 1.5 for me...
This is because you are using a modified firmware.
You have to replace the busybox ls file with the toolbox ls file.
but my ls is linked to toolbox ?
just had another go, it appears you have to close the file explorer and open it again
Ah ok thanks. I didn't know that. What is the easiest way for me to get a file out of an application directory then. I want to get the sqlite database from an app I am writing off the phone.
I'm using apps2sd so I thought the application data should reside in /system/sd/app but if I navigate there in linda or astro it is blank. /data/app is also blank.

Have you tried opening it with Term Emu or adb instead of a file manager?
Well I'm a bit stuck now.
I got thinking my apps 2 sd wasn't working so I just decided to switch to the unionfs method.
Now my phone is looping. I don't want to do a wipe and I don't have access to ADB here at work so I can't copy a new update.zip ROM to my phone.
So I can't check anything until I get home and can reflash my phone which will hopefully fix the problem.
Ah what a nightmare. The unionfs apps2sd didn't work on the first attempt so I ended up having to reformat, wipe, reinstall etc. I'm back up and running now and was able to get the file I wanted via adb pull.
How come file managers don't show the contents of folders such as /data/data/ ?

Reread that thread. The answer is in there.
Hint: ROM flash packages never put anything in /data
you can preinstall apps to /data/app but it takes update script modding. if you havent figured it out it is a lot easier to add them as system apps in /system/app
@Dani897: I try adding apk to /system/app or /data/app but none are working. When I add apk to /system/app; after the rom flashed and reboot, Samsung kept on flashing forever.

no in a terminal emulator or in linux. they get screwy sometimes if you do editing in windows. i cant even seem to get ownership of one of my flash drives on my linux machine after i formatted it with windows.
if you are on a mac you can do it by clicking and choosing "get info" from the context menu apparently but i dont own a mac so i dont know.
i never used it but check out cygwin and do some googling on permissions in terminal/console. it might be best if you are not ready to install a new os. but you can also install ubuntu with the wubi installer inside windows of use a vm with osx or the linux distro of your choice pretty easily. please dont ask for support questions on doing those things.
you can find permissions of files in a directory with ls -l
you can change them with chmod an ususally one of the numbers below but there are others, google is your friend
666 is rw-rw-rw
644 is rw-r--r-
777 is rwxrwxrwx
755 is rwxr-xr-x
644 or 755 are the most likely that they should be.

root explorer is a file manager, it's very simple so it's fast, has many menu n' it can access to system, edit or delete system, mount rw/ro, edit build.prop. I have been used it since I know about rooting, and I used it to access n' edit system.

Yes, this is right.
In short, you may find an application named 're-explorer' (root explore), usually you can use it to modify files that can not be accessed by normal file manager (maybe only SDCard...), it shows all files of cellphone (/etc, /system...) when device is rooted

no, it's $3.99
First, you need ROOT access to do this. It will fix the security force-close and enable the uninstall of apps.
1 - Download FIXV2 here - http://d-h.st/gMh
2 - Extract the file to your desktop and copy the files inside "FIRMWARE\IMAGE" folder to your phone.
3 - Download root explorer from play store and move those files to the firmware\image directory located on your phone.
4 - Long press each file and set permition to RW-R-R (0644) (You do this by selecting OWNER to read and write, GROUP to read and OTHERS to read.
5 - Reboot and try accessing settings.
Thanks to ferreinf for the link and how to do it, I just tried to do this as much newbie proof as possible.
have seen this problem in numerous ROM threads(haven't myself run into this), thanks for the heads up :thumbs up:

No, it has nothing to do with what you want and there's absolutely no point in doing what wanna do either. You can not reclaim the free space to yourself and that would yet prevent you from installing OTA updates. The best way around this is to unable the system apps you don't wanna run.

Worked for me to get the nexus g+ rom working fully... used root browsed in ROM Toolbox to copy the files to the relevant folder off root, and set all the permissions to rwx.
I have a OnePlus One CM11 rooted.
I read a post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2064859&highlight=deleted
And therefore I "played" a little bit with my phone with those things:
1) \System\priv-app\ContactsProvider.apk
2)ContactsStorage from Setting ->Apps->All->ContactsStorage
Somehow I ended up with the situation that:
1)ContacsStorage does not appear at the apps list.
2)The directory \data\data\com.android.provider.contacts have disappeared.
I want to reinstall\flash the ContactsStorage app.
I know that reinstalling the rom will fix it, but I'm trying to avoid it.
Do you know of any other way I can do it?
Extract it from your ROM zip. Copy back to it's original location with a file manager (Root Explorer), set permissions and reboot.

I don't have my rom zip (This is the rom that came installed).
But returning the original backup apk and rebooting did not do the job

Then you are doing spmething wrong. What do you use to move? Is system set to R/W? permissions set? Same folder?

The problem that the apk is vanishing after reboot is not a permission issue. Try a better file manager (in my case Root Explorer never fails). Mount system as R/W and do the rest.

The apk is NOT vanishing, it stays there.
The app of ContactsStorage is vanished from the apps list permanently.
As well as the folder in \data\data of com.android.providers.Contacts.
The option to sync google contacts is gone as well.

I don't know what the odex file is.
I did not back the odex file so I do not know if it's the original, but there is a ContactsProvider.odex in there.
