[Q] Nexus 5 vibrating but touchscreen not responding and screen not turning on - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My cousins Nexus 5 screen is not turning on and the touchscreen isn't responding to anything however when using the power button it vibrates, I assume this means a replacement screen etc is needed but I though I'd just check first? Thanks in advance

has your friend tried rebooting his phone? long press the power button for 15-20 seconds, then press again to boot up. there are many reasons why the screen might not be turning on, some not even relating to the screen.

This worked on my device. It went off while I was at the metro traveling to work. It vibrated and I was unable to turn on the screen to check what it vibrated for.
Could you, please, share some reasons why we might be seeing this issue?
The phone has not been rooted and is running stock kitkat 4.4.2. It was upgraded using sideload as I was not willing to wait for the OTA.
I can't remember anything to reproduce the problem. All apps were closed and three updates waiting at the play store.

[Q] Bricked Nexus S. Faulty power button?

Hi guys.
I noticed a few weeks ago my power button started to work when it felt like it. Sometimes it would be fine, other times it would take about 30 presses before it registered I was attempting to use it..
Now it has completely failed.
The phone is currently off, whenever I try to press the power button it never turns on. But as soon as I attach a charger to it (AC and USB), without even pressing the power button, the phone vibrates and the google screen flashes up, but never gets past that screen.
If I hold the volume up button as I attach a charger it attempts to enter recovery/bootloader mode(?), but freezes as soon as it comes on. No buttons work and it requires a battery pull to turn it off.
The phone is also not recognised by my computer, or by odin, or anything.
Not really sure what to do. Would try and flash things back to stock, but can't find a way to do that. Not really sure it would help either?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Oh and I looked through current threads and searched on google but I couldn't find anyone with a similar problem :/
It seems, your power button is constantly pressed. Maybe you dropped it? You should try to carefully move the button in every direction instead of pressing it, hopefully it clicks back to its right place. Other option is taking it back to the shop, and get it repaired. It's a hadware problem, so you won't be able to use neither recovery nor the ROM. The bright side is, that probably it's an easily repairable problem, and won't take too long

I was on an ICS ROM, can't remember which one, but the button started playing up when I was on a GB ROM..
Here's hoping the button just suddenly starts working though.. :L
Cheers for the reply
Just in case anyone else has this problem. My situation looked horrible.. but I brought a USB Jig from eBay and after months of problems. I got into recovery mode and flashed back to stock. Everything is perfect now

Though I am officially out of the Nexus S great community (mine was sold) but a great lesson I learned here is to BABY the power button...I also disabled the screen lock so I can get screen to wake with vol rocker.... take care of the power button folks on Nexus S lol

Well no lol. It started working on its own after I reflashed. It works on and off.. but I only flash roms now that have volume rocker wake and 'sleep' in the notification bar.. i.e CM based etc. Just in case the power button decides to fail completely

Stock ICS has a feature to wake the screen using the vol rocker.
And you can search the market for "Lock screen widget" to shut the screen.
In this case you minimize the need for the power button..That what I was doing..

[Q] Phone won't boot into recovery or otherwise

Hi there,
Sorry but I think I finally found the right forum for this and I wanted to take one more stab before kissing this phone goodbye.
I have a Rogers Galaxy SGH-i727R. About three weeks ago, the phone started re-starting on it's own. I though maybe it was a sticky power key and had that replaced. The problem persisted. I then noticed that it was primarily upon receiving text messages that the phone would reboot. So it seemed it was a software issue. I am running the stable build of CM9.
Yesterday the phone rebooted and never got off the angry alien screen. I pulled the battery, charged it etc and still could not get it to fully boot up. I left it for over an hour. I finally decided to call it quits and re-flash the phone. Problem is, it will not boot into recovery at all. When I hold down Vol + - and Power, it jsut goes into a loop of vibrating every three seconds until I let go and then it tries a normal boot again. Once, I briefly got a screen saying I was trying to install custom software and to press volume up to do so, but before I could hit volume up, the phone cycled off.
I should also mention that the four buttons on the bottom of the screen do not work. I accidentally sliced the wires on the side of the phone when opening it up. I use a software button saver widget to access their functions. I wonder if that issue is related....
Thanks for any advice. I would like to get into recovery so I can load a new ROM or a stock ROM.
If you haven't ventured there yet in this forum I'd recommend Vincom's roundup on just about everything http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398. I don't know if it will help much in your situation but it's worth a look. Also, you may want to research usb jigs, not sure if they will work with our devices though ... research is the key word.

All I can tell you is that your problem sounds exactly like a stuck power button. I know you replaced it but all the symptoms you point out suggest stuck power button. Maybe try cleaning it again?

But if it were a stuck power button it would not stay on the loading screen indefinitely, no? If I hold down the power button while booting, it will turn the phone off.
Hold vol +- and pwr until it vibrates let go of pwr continue to hold vol +-. You were letting go of all of them at once going by your described method.

[Q] Infinity won't start, just vibrating indefinitely

Hi gurus,
Updated the OTA patch today from ASUS. worked fine but got discharged while my son was playing with it. charged it and then tried to start it. It just won't boot. Starts vibrating which will not stop. Nothing on the screen. Pressing on Power button for about 10 seconds will stop it for a moment but will start again to vibrate after a short pause.
Tried the manual reset button, same result. Finally, pressed the power and Volume up button for 10 seconds which has atleast made it stop vibrating but is still dead. Tried to restart and same behaviour.
Has anyone seen this on infinity before? Have had it for 9 months and never been a problem.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Maybe a HDMI connection might let you see whats happening if its related to the display not working.
I am having the same problem. it vibrates..stop for 1 sec..then vibrates again and that's all..always black screen!! i think the problem (in my case) is my screen + digitizer coz my computer can recognize it as storage!
Yes my problem is the screen! i bought a micro HDMI to HDMI cable and everything works like a charm! The screen brightness works but no image at all!
Screenshots:http://db.tt/aBg7IXKd
Tried to charge it fully but to no avail.
still keeps just vibrating.
I work with leicesteruk (small world and why is he not using CROMi-X!?) and I think this is hard bricked! Device will not power on other than it vibrates once then on the second vibrate that normally signifies boot loader load it jus continuously vibrates and does nothing else. No screen, nothing.
We have tried various volume held down options and nothing works including reset hole and letting the battery drain. It still charges but just goes into continuously vibrating with no screen.
The only thing it will accept is power down plus volume down stops the vibrating after 20 secs if held down.
I have advised to RMA.
wow, that's extremely hard luck right after an update.

Phone won't boot

Hey guys,
My phone shut off unexpectedly today and now won't turn back on. When I try to power it on I see the Google logo for a couple seconds and then it'll just shut off again. I tried holding the volume up/down buttons to access the bootloader, but right after I get to the screen it just restarts itself again.
Connecting to power (AC or USB) causes it to constantly reboot over and over, it just shows the Google logo for a couple seconds and then restarts again.
Any ideas on what I can do?

Provide more information for a starter - stock? unlocked bootloader? rooted? third party recovery? rom and if yes which?
If it's stock I'd RMA it.
If not what did you do immediately before the problem started?
try holding the power button for > 2 seconds which should turn it off completely, leave it on a wall charger for at least a couple of hours then turn it back on - I doubt it'll fix the problem but it's a simple thing to try...

Everything on it is stock, no ROM, not rooted. I had just taken it out of my pocket to check the time, put it back in my pocket and then felt it vibrate, took it back out to see it at the Google logo and haven't been able to get it started since. There was one or two times when it got past the Google logo and started to show the start up animation (the four colours bouncing around or whatever it is) but then it shut off again.
I tried holding the power button to completely turn it off, but plugging it into the wall charger just causes it to repeatedly attempt to boot like I mentioned earlier. I'll leave it for a while and hope for the best
Sounds like the mobo is bad. Most likely will have to rma it.

Maybe not. Sounds like a stuck power button to me.
OP does the phone just endlessly repeat this cycle? If so it's rebooting itself do to a stuck power button. One other users already reported similar issues and his power button was indeed stuck. Mash the power button hard for a minute to see if you can unstick it.

Thanks so much, really wasn't looking forward to waiting for weeks while the RMA went through. The button didn't appear to be stuck - it was still clicky - but after mashing it for a minute it started up normally and appears to be fine now.

brother the issue is gone, as mentioned "sticky power button" was causing it. read the thread before posting. btw thanks for effort anyway... haha
:laugh::silly:
Hi all. Sorry to reopen an old thread (but xda suggested I check here before making my own thread).
I think we have the exact same problem with a Nexus 5. Unfortunately, bashing the power button doesn't seem to be helping (and makes me feel slightly silly .
Anyone know how much effort it would be to take it apart to get to the part that's stuck? Any good instructions?
Thanks.
Weird, I have the same issue starting a few hours ago. I updated to the Oct 17 beta of Cataclysm then a hour later it happened. But was told it sounds like the power button issue.
Took it apart, tried to fix it. If plugged in I can get into the bootloader, but then it reboots again. I've tried tapping it on a hard surface, and it gets seems like it almost fixes it because it'll connect to my laptop but then reboots again.
Could it be the battery? It was fully charged but then died as I was deleting hundreds of photo's in Dropbox to move photo's over from my phone because it was full.
I too am running into this same issue. My screen cracked so I replaced the digitizer with some success. In the process I damaged the battery and needed to replace it. When I got the new battery and replaced it my phone is now unusable.
When unplugged: I turn on the phone and it's running the ANDROID animation then turns off.
When plugged in: I turn on the phone, the ANDROID animation runs then the phone restarts and continues the process over and over again.
I then flashed the phone with Marshmallow and the same thing happens. Except now that I flashed it I get the Android icon with the spinning gear. So; I flashed it back to 5.1.1, but the same result.
Could I have physically damaged something inside or is it a battery issue? Thanks for any insight.

[Q] Did my N5 just turn into a paper weight?

There isn't much in the way of details for what just happened to my phone but I'll try my best to be as detailed as possible.
I picked it up and turned the screen on then I hear a "pop" sound. (i don't know if it was a hardware pop or something that came from the speaker)
The screen grayed out a little bit, the system buttons on the bottom of the screen disappeared and horizontal lines appeared on the bottom quarter of the screen. The screen was also completely unresponsive.
I held down the power button to restart the phone, when I did it vibrated and the screen turned off. However, the phone won't turn back on now. Plugging the phone into the wall doesn't make the charging icon appear so I'm assuming that my phone just died.
The phone was bootloader unlocked, rooted, and had Franco kernal r14 on it. No overclocking, under-clocking, or under-volting.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I could try to either bring it back to life or confirm that it is indeed dead?
Hold both volume buttons and the power button and see if it will go into the bootloader.

Try leaving it plugged In for awhile even though it doesn't appear to be charging. You could try to hold town the power button for thirty seconds.
It seems like it COULD be bricked. If it is, I would contract Google for a RMA. Their not going to spend there time fixing it just to see if you were rooted or unlocked.
Good luck.

I kinda figured since it's bricked they wouldn't be able to tell. I'll try leaving it on the charger overnight and see what happens. Thanks for your input.
