[Guide] Enabling Google Now Cards manually/force-fully - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear Nexus 5 Users,
I was trying to use Google Now Cards here in Sri Lanka, but I could not enable or even the option did not showed up.
Then, I tried to push an old update of Google Search and then updated via the Play Store, IT WORKED.
Please do the following if you have problems with Google Now Cards.
Disclaimer - I am not responsible for lags, bricks or any sort of bad happened to your device.
1. Unlock Bootloader and Root your device. Follow THIS link.
2. Install Titanium Backup. Here is the Playstore Link -> Titanium Backup
3. Download an older version of Google Search app. I prefer downloading 2.6.7 update. Here is the Link -> Google Search 2.6.7, store it into phone sdcard, later we will be using it.
Now do this patiently.
4. Install a 3rd party launcher and make as the default one. I prefer the Epic Launcher which goes close to the stock. Playstore Link -> Epic Launcher
5. Go to Titanium Backup App and search for Google Search app. The update should be 3.1.xx.. Take a Titanium backup of that app and Un-install it.
6. After uninstalling, install the Google Search 2.6.7 update which is on your sdcard. [Step 3]
7. Now go to Playstore and Search for Google Search and update it.
That's it. After updating your left swipe Google Now will be enabled.
Check the screenshot Ive attached which has the Google Now On/Off toggle, with default I did not have that option, after doing this process it appeared.
Cheers :good::good:

Alternate method, without rooting phone
1. Remove sim card and turn airplane mode;
2. Download free fake GPS Application
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lexa.fakegps
3. Choose the position where Google now is supported. Example New York, and touch Set Location, You must allow mock locations in developers section;
4. Settings .. Wifi .. Touch&Hold on SSID you are connected .. Advanced Settings .. Proxy Manual Mode .. Enter Proxy Server IP Address and Port (For proxy servers address, google it, or pm).
5. Reboot phone;
6. Touch Google Search Bar .. Settings .. Accounts & privacy .. Google Account .. Sign Out;
7. Disable Google Play Service application. Before you need uninstall update and disconnect Android Device Manager.
8. Touch Google Search Bar .. Settings .. Accounts & privacy .. Google Account .. Choose your gmail address; Agree with prompt, touch "I'am In". Activate Google Play Service application
Congratulations, now you have Google Now service activated. If you turn it off, then you need same procedures again.
9. You can remove Proxy servers address from Wifi settings, disable mock locations also and uninstall fake gps app if you want.
Many thanks to RaouF Ouacher from google groups forum. for provided such information. Sorry for my English.

Sadly it did not work either but I'm on an S3... Google now cards are no longer showing up no matter what I do. Maybe I'll try the GPS spoof trick.

You don't need root/ or to spoof GPS for this. (GPS spoofing doesn't affect location information anyway)
You need an internet connection for this Wifi/ or mobile internet.
Step 1: Disable Google Play Services (you'll have to uninstall updates first to see the disable button on some devices)
Step 2: goto Settings > Account > Google > Search and Logout and then Log back in. (It will ask you to turn on now cards here > select Yes)
Google now should be enabled now.
Step 3: enable Google Play Services
Tested on Nexus 5, Moto G, Galaxy S4
NOTE: If you have a message saying "there was a problem communicating with google servers" you'll have to clear app data and cache of your google search. THIS WILL CAUSE YOUR HOME SCREEN TO GO BACK TO DEFAULT if you're using GEL (i.e. NEXUS5)
This has been now checked by multiple people and is 100% working

What do you mean by shipping cards? This is for people who don't have Google now at all because of their location.

Thanks to the OP, this method still works if anyone was wondering but it seems that you need to use the Google search app mentioned in the post or older as I used 2.7.. that I had backed up previously but it still didn't allow me to enable Google Now due to my location. Also it doesn't have to be a nexus 5, I've just enabled it on a nexus 7 so it might work on any device

Not working on my Nexus 5. Any ideas why? I would like to fix this and prove the 100% statement as correct, but at this moment it's not.

Did you disable Google play services?
Are you getting a network error message when trying to dig back in to search? I'll need more info about what exactly you did and what happened.

Yes, I did disable Google Play services. I got the network error message, so I deleted the Google Search app data and cache too.
What happens is that no matter how many times I try to log-out and log-in with my account (in the Google Search settings) afterwards, I am not asked to enable Google Now, so it's not available for me. The switch to enable Google Now in the Search settings does not exist.
I assume at least part of my problem is due to the Location services, they cannot be enabled where I live... Is there any workaround for this? Or if the problem is somewhere else, could someone point out - where exactly?
Thanks!

Yeah this is the only work around for the play services location not available. When play services is disabled Google search can't check your location so that's why this works.
However there was an update to Google search 2 says ago so I haven't tested this after that.

Thanks for your help anyway. I also uninstalled all updates to Google Search, but without success...

Hey, you know how I got it working? I went abroad, to a country that obviously supports the location logging, and the option to activate Google Now, appeared Luckily it didn't disappear when I returned home. I hope that Google don't "fix" this bug.

Thanks... managed to get the cards enabled following this..
The only difference is that I had to enable the cards prior to updating back to Search 3.x... otherwise it did not give me the option to enable Google Now after!

thanks buddy

This method doesn't need root. Just check how to disable that for your phone model.

Yes, this method don't need root, I mean I don't want to try other method that need root.
And what you have mentioned is my question, it's about ways to disable "Google Play Service".
I can't do it because the option to disable it is not enable.

Google Play Services is many different things. It's location services, auto syncs etc.
I don't think you would want to completely disable it.

"Unfortunately google play store has stopped": what to do (general)

There are a gazillion threads on this topic, but most of them are about device-specific or carrier-specific problems. However google play store can stop for a number of reasons that are more generic. Googling them is a pain in the butt, as I recently discovered. This thread is intended as a place to collect them together. As well as checking here, it would be important to check on threads for your specific device and carrier, as they may have pushed a bad version.
Cause: Part-installed apps: something went wrong part-way through installing an app
Checking: Check in google play; if it says 'downloading' or 'installing' permanently, something is amiss
Solution: Try uninstalling the app (you may be able to reinstall it successfully afterward)
Cause: /mnt/sdcard is full
Checking: If you have a terminal, use the "df" command, otherwise use a capable file viewer
Solution: On a terminal, "cd /mnt/sdcard", then "du -s (dirname)" to check sizes, "rm -r (dirname)" to remove something (or use 'mv (dirname) /mnt/external_sd if you have an external sd card with some space). On a file viewer, move or remove relevant directories. You can't avoid this: if your sd card is full, you're definitely going to have to remove something (or move it to your external card) - the system isn't going to work with a full card. USE WITH CARE EITHER WAY. Whatever you remove cannot be retrieved, and removing the wrong thing can make your system or applications misbehave.
Cause: Corrupted data
Checking: Try the solutions in increasing order of severity.
Solution:
Go into Settings, then apps, then All, click on Google Play Store. Then:
Clear cache, Force stop, restart Google Play and retry
Go into Settings, then apps, then All, click on Google Play Store. Then:
Clear data, Force stop, restart Google Play and retry
Go into Settings, then Accounts and Sync, Click on your account, then on options icon, Remove account (ignore warnings - it's easy to restore)
Restart Google Play. It will ask you to add an account - add your original back in.
Cause: Corrupted binaries
Checking: Not sure how...
Solution: Install an updated binary. This thread always seems to have the latest. But you should probably check your device and vendor lists in case there is a device-specific binary (I think the more specific binaries currently just add a different skin, but further information would be good). You may also need to reinstall google play services (thanks jpeg1900)
Or:
"I just reflashed the same gapps in CWM over the first installation, rebooted and had to wait a few minutes before Play Store actually started working again." - Thanks Nephatiu (see below).
Please feel free to add further info below. I'll try to incorporate all good nuggets into this post.

Not sure. I had a similar problem at one time, and eventually discovered it was due to a specific app that had only half-installed itself (perhaps the tab had crashed halfway through the download, not sure, it's lost in the mists of time). Uninstalling that app got over the problem. However it might help someone (perhaps you) if you post the error message that you get on the display (people are likely to google it, so that you might get together with other people with the same problem).
I had issues with the Play Store earlier today and tried clearing the app cache and data to no avail, but found another simple fix. I uninstalled updates from version 3.8.15 back to 3.7.15. Worked like a charm.
Well, my Play Store recently crashed during updates, after which it wouldn't run any longer anymore stating that same message every time I try running it and also every time an app accesses the store for information (which seems to happen when I just open the apps). My sdcard wasn't full, clearing data and cache did nothing, no other data is corrupted, I replaced the market with a fresh copy apk, tried different versions, ... Nothing worked... So, reading the internet, I saw the final solution was to remove and re-add my Google account, but for some reason (not a rational one) I didn't really want to do this, so I went back to CWM recovery mode, reflashed the gapps zip I used the first time and rebooted... Once booted it didn't give me the error I usually get on any other boot since it started crashing, but when I tried running Play Store, it crashed again with the same message... Defeated I went to my Google accounts to remove, at which point (just before doing anything) I noticed the Updates-notification of the Play Store popping up in my notification drawer. I tapped it and Play Store booted, everything works again, and it updated itself back to the latest version, still without any problems.
So in short, if you don't ant to read the entire text:
I just reflashed the same gapps in CWM over the first installation, rebooted and had to wait a few minutes before Play Store actually started working again.
Dunno if this will work for anyone of you, 'cause it depends on the reason it's not working, but this possible solution should not be missing from your list since it worked for at least one person (me).

Hotspot Shield VPN 1.3
just download Hotspot Shield VPN 1.3
http://www.androiddrawer.com/11257/download-hotspot-shield-vpn-1-3-app-apk/
and google play store will work again
What does Hotspot Shield VPN 1.3 have to do with Google Play not working?
That is an app which creates a VPN so you can access sites that are locked or not authorized.
Personally I went into Settings than Application Manager, then ALL, then Google Play Store.
After that i cleared all the data, force stopped the app and restarted it again.
It worked nicely.

seems point 3 fixes it for me, but as soon as im back on the play store and starting to download something it just starts over again with the error message. Any ideas?
Not even sure how to describe this one..
Hardware: ASUS ME301T (MeMo Smart Pad 10)
Version: 4.2.1 (10.6.1.29, but it was happening on 10.6.1.25 as well)
Rooted, SuperSU installed for the multi-user support. Aside from that, the device is stock.
Play Store: 4.1.6 (4.0.something factory)
Setup:
2 users
Primary user has 2 Google accounts+FB account
Secondary user has a single Google account
Problem:
I have 43 apps installed on the primary user. If I install even 1 more, the app crashes when trying to load the list of installed apps. Doesn't seem to matter what the 44th app is. Uninstall it to drop it back to 43 and it works just fine again. Secondary user is at 46 and no issues. I've tried removing both Google accounts, clearing data+cache of the store, DMClient, and Download Manager, as well as removing the store updates. Nothing has worked. The only things left I can think of is trying to update the store manually via newer apk or a factory reset. I don't know what, if anything, ASUS changed in the store, as the installed size reports 10.46mb or so. Also want to avoid a reset for obvious pain-in-the-arse related reasons.
Any ideas?
I ran into a similar problem. After reading this thread, i tried a few of the suggestions. What ended up working for me was to go to the application manager, got to google play store, uninstall updates, and re install the factory version. Did the same for google play services.
same problem with 4.3.1.1
using a custom rom (LiquidSmooth) on a Galaxy Note II (N7100) international.
went through all the removing\reinstalling\clear cache tricks.. same error pops up every time i try to open the store, and sometimes just as a background process.
not sure if re-flashing will help... (cleared cache and dalvik too).
thoughts..?

No good ones, but just wondering - is there any possibility it's the 43rd app that is the root of the problem? Perhaps its data is corrupted in play's database, and adding another app reveals the problem.

Just in case you didn't try it, jpeg1900's suggestion of reinstalling google play services (rather than just google play) might be relevant here, in light of it crashing as a background process.

I am running Paranoid Android ROM and just wondered if changing hybrid profile of Google play store was contributing to app crashing?!?
note: I was able to open app but from opening menu could not go into any individual tabs (I.e. "apps") without crashing...
Changing hybrid settings back to lower DPI fixed issue and I have just set to the maximum DPI before app starts crashing
hope this helps others

If your problem is due to google sites being blocked by a firewall (your company's, your ISP's, your country's, or whatever) this may be helpful. Be aware that you will need a site on the other end, outside the firewall, to route your google play communications.
If that's not your problem, this solution won't help.
Usually you will know - only a few countries block google, it's highly unlikely that a commercial ISP would, and you will know whether you are trying to do updates on your company's network.
There's a host file in system-etc- delete that file and reboot your phone and see if that works..

Not Working....now I am getting 'cant establish a reliable data connection to the server error when opening google play.
C) Repeat all of Step B and reboot. It will work !
Still Not working ......I never had that problem beyond this.....sorry but I guess you need to consult experts or try doing a factory setting, configuring an alternate Google ID.
Hope it helps !

I'll post this here since making sure this ROM is functioning properly is not a development issue.
Error processing purchase. [DF-BPA-09]. I keep getting this error message every time I try downloading a new app from Google Play. I can upgrade or download apps I have had previously just not new ones. I have a 4g Xoom running Team EOS Stingray JRO03L Nightly 125 and have Google Play 3.8.15. Anyone have an idea why I keep getting this and how I can fix it. Thanks

Delete Playstore from your settings/app folder. Wipe Delv,Cache ... Reflash your ROM, then your Gapps. (Google has to go through the account setup again) Google Play needs to reset you wallet/purchase authorization. If that does not fix the issue a CWM factory reset, will surely fix it.
on google ply it said to go to manage apps all app the go to google services framework and clear cash and data i am currently experiencing the same problem
and just found that page and this thread hope that helps
here is the page on google play click on "downloading installing and updating apps" then "error processing purchase on free apps"
http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/static.py?hl=en&page=known_issues.cs&ki_topic=1319135
same problem
anyone have any luck? I havent wiped and flashed yet.
Thank you. I suddenly started experiencing the same problem and I followed the steps in post #2 and it worked. I didn't have to reflash my rom or anything drastic like that.
I just wanted to thank you. I'm running an Evo 3d, but I just installed a version of MIUI and this error starting randomly happening. I had to go through step c but the errors seems to be gone. Thanks! :good:

Option A Worked perfect on my Asus Transformer TF700T Thanks.
Option D
For those of you that like me tried all other options but nothing worked, here's another option which worked for me:
Reboot to your custom recovery, in Advanced (usually) select to Fix permissions.
Of course i did this after doing options A-C which left me with a Play store that refused to connect at all which looked like a permissions issue.
Solution
Solution:
Delete cache from all google products, google play, video, books etc.
Delete account connected to the play store.
Reboot
Add your gmail account
log into google play it will prompt you to log in.
Done.
If you have mutlitple google accounts you should delete them all. Then after reboot add only the one you want to use in play store.
Once play store is connected to the gmail account of your choice then add the other google accounts.

[Noob][CM13][HowTo]Solve the "Unfortunately, Google Play Services has stopped error".

[Noob][CM13][HowTo]Solve the "Unfortunately, Google Play Services has stopped error".
Hello Everyone!
I researched everywhere about this "Google Play Services has stopped error" and could not find any one method that worked. So I just had a look in the "report" of the error and found out that it wanted location access to continue.
I have the following version of CM: 13.0-20160513-NIGHTLY-falcon
[What I've tried]
As said in other places, I went to
Settings-> Apps-> Google Play Services-> Permissions-> And enabled everything, including Location.
But didn't work. It kept on showing that random error anytime I used any Google app.
[What To do]
So here's what you need to do.
Since this is for CyanogenMod, you may have something called "Privacy" in settings. We're gonna use that.
Goto
1) Settings-> Privacy-> Privacy Guard.
2) Click on 3 dots on right top and tap on Advanced.
3) Under the Location Section, click on Google Play Services.
4) In "Coarse Location", change from " Allowed" to "Ignored".
This should fix the problem. (I've checked this in many phones and it worked!) Click on thanks if it worked!
---------------------------------
EXTRAS: (Only for developers )
On seeing the Error Report, I found that it needed a "Fine" location access whereas, in Privacy Guard, it showed "Coarse" location access (a different less accurate location permission).
I know that, in addition to having "ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" in the manifest, we also have to request them from the user at runtime (using requestPermissions()) checking with (using checkSelfPermission()).
I guess this Open Source Play Services Edition (which I downloaded) has not been still modified for API 23 . But it said, Marshmallow, If this is really the case, then some develepor please do it! I'm not much into this!
Thank you very much! Just wanted to add as this happened to me a couple times now as well:
If "Setup Wizard" constantly crashes (making the phone extremely hard to navigate) just try to get into it's app settings (e.g. via "Apps" or "Memory") and allow it all of the permissions it needs.
Resource: Google search.
It worked for me thanks ! Motog1 running on cm13
Thank you! You save my phone. I'm beginning to give up my cm13 on Xperia L.

Hello guys, the following tutorial will show you how to enable the Google Now cards feature if it isn't available in your country. Go ahead and follow these 5 simple steps:
Remove your sim card if you have one.
Download a suitable VPN app and connect to a UK/US server (in the video below i used premium VPN, you can go ahead and download the latest version from the playstore https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jailbreakvpn.hideme or use betternet as an alternative https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.freevpnintouch ).
Head over to settings>accounts and remove all google accounts from your device.
Go back to settings>apps and clear the data for Google App, Google Play Services and Google Service Framework(if you can't see it, show system apps).
Start the Google App, sign into your google account and you should be prompted with a Get Started option to setup Google Now Cards, continue to set it up.

No need to keep the VPN on, disconnect from it once you're done with the steps.
I do it..but it says, your gmail account is not capable of Google now...
IT WORKED!!
Thanks a lot it worked for me
it worked for me as well, but after a few minutes (10 or so) the google now feature didnt work anymore, for example the location services like travel time infos or the news cards in "your feed" didnt work anymore.
Is this not a permanent fix?

Doesn't work anymore on Pie. The play store will give a DF error, and the only way to fix that is to do a reboot. Once rebooted cards will disable and the play store will work again. Anyone have a way to fix this?

How To Guide [NO ROOT REQUIRED] Install GApps Suite on Edge S (Stock China ROM)

Update: I made the tutorial as simple as possible.
*Remove sim card or turn on airplane mode*
1. Go to Settings > System > Google Play Services
2. Turn on Google Play Services
3. Install latest Google Play Store from https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-store/
4. Install other Google Apps
5. To install Google Chrome, you MUST update "Android System Webview" first
6. Install your other apps.
*Disable first the stock Moto dialer, contacts, Lenovo Appcenter and LeCloud (as these apps will mess up your Google contacts).
7. Install Google sync contacts app attached to sync contacts.
8. Default Motorola Contactt app will sync your Google contacts (no need to install Google Contacts)
9. Default Motorola Calendar app will sync your Google calendar (no need to install Google Calendar)
Done.
-------
How to enable notifications in Motorola Edge S (phone will not kill the apps in background)
1. Go to Device Shield app
2. Go to Background Processing
3. Click the app one-by-one and update (as well as any app you installed that you want to receive notifications on time) to "Allow app running in background".
4. Go to Auto Start apps and enable your Google apps to auto start. I also do this with my other non-Google apps.
DONE. Your phone is now ready to use.
By going through this process, the play store will work with no issues after? Able to download whatever app you want or will it generate an error?

Yes. No Playstore issue whatsoever. Google will be the default app store to download, install and update all your apps. You can disable the default Lenovo App Center app.
Google assistant works too (of course you need to download the assistant app from Playstore as well).

Awesome, that's good to know. do you think it will survive a factory reset or you have to go through these steps for each factory reset?

You need to go through everything again
For those who do not need the Google suite, but only Play services dependent apps such as Play Store, Line, and GCam, enabling Google Services under "System" settings (>Advanced) works reliably and will update/install all your apps, too.
Loving the moto UI on Android 11, which lets you disable/uninstall almost anything including the built-in app store.
These steps work great so far with the 8gb/256gb variant. Only thing that needs troubleshooting from my end is the 5G band.

Chrome can be installed from the Lenovo Apps Centre if it doesn't install through Google Play Store.
Can verify NFC and Google Pay also works no problem.
I want to get the moto edge s from AliExpress, but found out that the device is not on the list to receive android 12 update.

You could considered the Moto Edge X30. It's available now on Aliexpress. It comes with Android 12 built in. It has much better specs than the Edge S, including a 50M OIS camera and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 cpu. But of course, it more expensive.

But G100 is on that list. So you will still be able to install its Android 12`s Global Rom on Edge S.

This means that the edge S pro does not receive android 12 in official ways, the only way for it to receive android 12 and unlocking the device's bootload. (China won't give even one kind of OTA support)
Hello, I put the Chinese rom at 20 pro. but I can't get android auto to work, because I need to install android auto stub to the system folder so it recognizes it for me. but with root explore like other apk they don't let me install it. I have root with magisk 25.
