I rooted my Nexus 5 yesterday (4.4.2) using CF-Auto-Root. RootChecker says I have root but I really can't do anything with it. Titanium Backup is constantly on "Asking for root rights..." even though I grant them. File Explorers cannot deleted APKs in /system/apps. ClockSync can't change the system time and sync it to NTP. I tried rebooting the device to no avail. Please help me! :crying:
UPDATE: Root checker basic now saying "Please wait for Root Check to complete. System appears to be running very slow".
Open superuser and update the binaries

fun, clueless people using root toolkits thinking it makes things easier but ends up taking longer. its easier to not use a root toolkit with a nexus, as its not needed. to root any nexus device..
1. in fastboot, fastboot oem unlock. this unlocks the bootloader.
2. flash a custom recovery via fastboot.
3. flash the su binaries(latest supersu) in your new recovery.
4. reboot and profit, thats all.

No need to be condescending, bud. For my Nexus 4, I used fastboot to unlock the bootloader and install CWM then install su. Thought I'd join the CF-Auto-Root bandwagon for N5 and the root was working for some time before it started acting up.

How do I do that from within the app? Do I choose the option to do it via the custom recovery or the "normal" method?
OK, I cleaned up SuperSU/uninstalled it, rebooted, reinstalled SuperSu from the market, updated the binaries "normally", rebooted and now all is well. Thanks!

Introducing.... Superboot!
Superboot is a boot.img that when booted, will root your device the first time you boot (installing su and the superuser APK). No need to flash any partitions, no need to mess around with ADB, no messing with the contents of your data partition, no overwriting the shipped ROM on your device, just boot the boot image using the instructions below and you're done!
APPLY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Superboot r4 - DOWNLOAD - MD5: f53825a2df09277f899b6738b3a059d5
How to use Superboot - Windows, Linux and OSX
- Download the Superboot zip file above and extract to a directory
- Put your device in bootloader mode - Turn off the phone then turn on with the 'volume up' and 'volume down' buttons both pressed to enter the bootloader (as pictured below)
- WINDOWS - double click 'superboot-windows.bat'
- MAC - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x superboot-mac.sh' followed by './superboot-mac.sh'
- LINUX - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x superboot-linux.sh' followed by './superboot-linux.sh'
Note: If you are using a retail device, you may need to unlock the bootloader first, using './fastboot-windows oem unlock' (or the appropriate version for your machine, included in this zip). Note that the OEM unlock sequence wipes your device, so consider doing an 'adb backup' beforehand if required!
Enjoy!

I've got a question I hope won't bother you to answer, Paul.
My goal with my Nexus 7 when it arrives is to be able to load up Titanium Backup Pro and restore some of my Games (App+Data). I' d like to know if I understand the process right to get to that point and still be able to receive OTA updates.
The first thing I should do when I turn on my device is boot into the bootloader and oem fastboot unlock.
Next, I should follow your instructions to chmod and install the superboot package.
When my device reboots after this, should I be able to update to 4.1.1 and retain root so I can install TBpro?

Hey,
I just did the 2.20 root method posted about a week ago, and I got to the white screen without a problem. I did the htc-dev stuff, and that worked too. I pressed Yes and unlocked my bootloader (or so I thought). I flashed TWRP recovery. However, I couldn't do anything else. My phone runs normally, but I checked and it is not rooted. I realize that the new 2.20 method is a temporary root, and I checked in its thread, and was pointed to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952426. That isn't for Mac, and I wasn't able to find any way to root a 2.20 HOX, install SU, install a ROM, etc.
I installed a rom and all that on my old phone, a Motorola Atrix, without too many problems, so I'm not completely illiterate. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks!

no, because i don't know how to do it. should i flash it using fastboot (while the phone is in white screen)? if so, what file do I flash? I got a SU zip, but I'm not sure what to do with it. Okay, a couple more questions. Where should I get the su zip? I googled it and found a directory of a bunch of different versions of SU, but it hadnt been updated since like July. Also, what command do I use to install the su.zip?

2. I said reboot in twrp/recovery (do not flash su.zip in fastboot) and hit the install menu, select the su.zip and swipe to flash
3. go back to main menu and hit reboot and then system
4. download SuperSu.apk from chainfire in the Market

If the BL is unlocked you don`t need a PC to flash and modify your phone. Just download a custom recovery (.img file) and flash it with Flashify from Play.
-Edit- missread and assumed you had root. Nope can`t flash custom software from third (stock) recovery.

I was just about to say that. I've used flashify before. I know how to root with a custom recovery, I was just curious if there was a way to do it on the move.
Sent from my Nexus 5
There isn't. Android blocks access to all / (root) by default. The only way to root android from within Android itself is to take advantage of an exploit but as yet there doesn't seem to be one for KK /N5.
All unlocking the bootloader does is allow you to fastboot flash a custom recovery. Rooting from a recovery is easy because android is running therefore not "blocking" / (root). But since the recovery partition is on the / root of the device, you cannot flash a recovery whilst android is running....unless you have root access.
....so fastboot flash a recovery is the only way to get root, which requires obviously a computer.
Hope this helps to understand

I then downloaded a app to unlock the bl and did it all without a computer. Just curious if this could be done on the n5 as well. But I guess not. Thanks everyone.

on the n4, and n5, there are apps that can lock and unlock the bootloader. but you need root for that. if you downloaded supersu and it asked to update the binaries, that means that your device had root(old) already, and just had its bootloader relocked..
Hello everybody.
First of all, I'm not sure whether this is the place to post this kind of questions. My apologies in advance. Here is my problem.
I rooted my nexus 5 nearly after a month of having bought it using the nexus root toolkit. Today I received the 4.4.3 OTA, and somewhere I read that it would fail most likely. I also read read that I should set survival mode in SuperSU (a pro option) in order to retain root access, which I couldn't. I tried to update via the OTA thinking it would fail, and it worked, only that I lost my root access.
Is there an easy way to regain root access? I don't want to wipe and re-install everything. There are only a few apps I use that need root access, however it would be nice to have them back, nevertheless.
Thanks in advance.
PS: Now I am able to record video hassle-free, no more static noise in the background :victory:

Thanks for your reply. I have already SuperSU on my phone, but when I press it it says there are some binaries missing. Busybox doesn't update the binaries since it has no root access and says the device might be improperly rooted. My recovery is TWRP, so I can actully flash root files or such.
Edit: I just tried to boot into recovery and it didn't work quite well. There is a fallen android guy with a red triangle. So I don't have recovery either it seems.

I have my M8 with S-OFF (Paid for Sunshine) and it is temporarily rooted with KingRoot. I'm just confused on what I need to do next to get fully rooted so I can start flashing some ROMS! I tried to install TWRP with the app but it doesn't seem to work and it just boots into the standard recovery mode and NOT TWRP.
So, where do I go after having S-OFF and temp root?
I would greatly appreciate anybodies help here, I've rooted several devices before but nothing has been harder or more confusing then rooting the m8 on 5.0.1!

OK finally got TWRP installed, can I flash SU from the SU app?
You flash SuperSU from within twrp.
Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
MTN, I know this can be frustrating for a newbie. There are plenty of walkthroughs, and I'm sure everyone else will tell you to google, but for the sake of being concise, here's the scoop:
1. Make sure you have ADB installed.
2. Go to your ADB prompt and make sure your device is showing up (need the HTC drivers installed) by doing:
adb devices
3. Reboot into fastboot:
adb reboot bootloader
4. Flash TWRP:
fastboot flash recovery twrp####.zip
5. Once you've got TWRP installed, you reboot INTO TWRP (full recovery) and let it patch your system because if you don't it will be overwritten. As follows:
- Reboot with VolDwn held.
- From bootloader, pick "recovery".
- Wait for TWRP to come up.
6. Once TWRP is in, drop supersu package ZIP (get the latest one, careful here!) into a directory, boot into TWRP, and install it.
Boom, your device is completely rooted.
But I think that the thing that you need to understand is that "rooted" only applies to the current ROM. Rooting isn't a magic thing - it simply means that you have root privilege on the current OS. It is separate from firmware, bootloader, etc. which all also have to be flashed/loaded/updated depending on what you are doing. There probably ought to be a newbie page somewhere that explains to people what each thing is. The ROM is essentially the same as whatever version of windows/linux/etc. you have on your home computer. It has nothing to do with the hardware, the firmware, or the bootloader.
On my phone, I followed the above procedure, but then proceeded to download and install a clean ROM that was pre-rooted. Then later I put back the stock Verizon ROM and had to reapply root. I then later removed root to return the phone to verizon for service. But I didn't uninstall Root, I simply flashed on a non-rooted ROM.
Does that make sense?
