Whilst waiting for my transformer to arrive I'm wondering what other toys I could get to go alongside it. I believe that android now has USB host but could I get one of those small USB drives to work with it? I'm looking at a small drive that would require power from the USB ..... can the Asus power such an item???
is there really nobody who can tell me if i can power an external mini HD from the USB ports ?
The thing is, I doubt many people actually have the keyboard dock yet - so until they are more freely available your guess is as good as anybody's

I'm sure there are just give them more than 20 minutes
I would say it it has external power source or runs on its own battery it should work. I would assume your tablet couldn't power it for long

lol... nice try but i gave them 24 hours and 20 minutes
I understand that the keyboard is rare/unavailable but its more of an android principle thing ... is there any reason why android wouldnt support a USB HD ?
I believe that USB host is now available but does Android allow power out via USB ?
The battery in the dock could help sustain power draining USB devices.
I think this is what your looking for.

NTFS HDD supported?
Anybody knows if NTFS formatted HDD will work out of the box?
NTFS support
Someone in this forum just mentioned that in the Tranformer user manual page 35, it mentioned Tuxera software that provides NTFS interoperability.
Now, with that info from the Transformer user manual, it gives a big hope that it does support NTFS.
Anyone with a Transformer, can you guys confirm that it will read NTFS formatted HDD?
I've just tried that with an external 750Gb hard drive formatted to NTFS - it has mounted successfully and can browse files just fine! Whee!
WD passport works fine on mine.. 250g ntfs

WD External HDD NTFS works well.
Some brandless Fat32 thumbdrive is working as well.
However, i cant get my sandisk cruzer fat32 to work
when i plug it in, the notification bar will show 'preparing to connect' for like 1 second and gone. The thumbdrive is then not mounted. Initially ive tot that it was due to U3 launchpad on the cruzer, so ive tried to reformat it and removed the launchpad. However, it is still not working. Anyone with similar experience

Video showing user running an external 2.5 hardrive. Although it's connected to the dock there's no reason why you couldn't buy a USB female to female cable and plug the slate into the adapter/power cable > USB female to female > external dard drive
Does anyone know what the requirements/limits are for using a hard disk drive with the dock USB port ?
I am thinking about getting one of these for general purpose external storage, and it would be nice to get one that works with my transformer too.

well there is no usb 3.0 support so those are out unless you get a backwards compatible one. And you also have to check the power consumption i think it hase to be bellow 15volts but im not sure
As far as I know all USB 3.0 drives are backward compatible.
from what i have read most are compatible with highspeed usb 2.0 but allot less are compatible with regular 2.0 hubs

What. There are 4 kinds of USB (not counting on the go, wireless and eventually others) : USB 1.0, USB 1.1, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0
Hi-Speed USB means just USB 2.0, Super Speed is USB 3.0 and the older ones are plain and simply USB.
The theorical top speeds are: 1.5mbps, 12mbps, 480mbps and finally 4000mbps
High speed was briefly and not standardized with USB 1.1 so some device makers had that nonsense on their hubs.
Maybe you misunderstood? Some drives don't like some hubs, but that's a power requirement... If the drive needs x volts and the hub can't offer them because it's already sharing the power with other devices and has no wall plug to get extra power, the drive will just spin up and down without ever starting. 3.5" drives always need their own power adapter, so those always work, 2.5" ones usually draw the power from the USB and as such might be a little hit and miss with hubs, however the Transformer powers them up quite well.
Western Digital makes awesome, reliable, fast and quiet drives, I do have an USB 2.0 My Passport... And several others in various devices

I wouldn't recommend any of those drives. I would instead go with something like THIS HDD, THIS external enclosure and THIS retractable USB 2.0 A-Male to Mini 5-Pin. I have this setup and I also have one with an 120gb SSD. Incidentally, if you go with a SSD there is no motor that has to spin the platters because there's no moving parts so it uses less battery power than the first HDD I showed you. Also I know on the Vantec enclosure it says capable for up to 160gb drives but if you look at the details it says up to 750gb HDD's. I can confirm this because mine is a 750gb HDD.
Got a Buffalostation that works well. If it's the best or not, I wouldn't know.

Hope it'll serve you well.
I just remembered that I had to re-format it to NTFS before the Transformer would recognize it. Just thought I'd let you know.

...but extremely dependable, very effective and lower power consuming than any of those Buffalo drives. I have a Buffalo NAS drive and they're good for that but as for using one for a portable drive I would not. If you're going to use a regular HDD I would at least go with a Seagate or Western Digital drive as they tend to be better drives and are far quieter than any other brand on the market today. Yeah it may be a little more expensive but it's worth it. At least it was for me that is.
i have a 350g western digital that ive had forever.
This drive arrived in the mail the other day. So far, so good; it was easily recognized by the TF. Not sure how fast it drains power as I haven't used it for too long yet, but it's silent. I also have an old 320GB Western Digital drive in an enclosure from five years ago that my TF sees, too. So, I have backups of backups. And that's not including the (2) 32gb cards I'll have once the second one shows up next week.

Hi,
I was curious if anyone got an ext hd to work with the usb adapter?
Everytime i plug it in, it tells me a "high powered ext hd" is connected but unable to read..i know it was made for usb sticks and keyboards etc but has anyone gotten ext hd to work?
Thanks!

I found my 1Tb Hitachi Touro was detected to start with but the power was insufficient to leave it on. It was not working after a few seconds of being plugged in. Memory sticks are no problem but the HDD sucked more power than the 10.1 wants to give...
Shame that an awesome tablet that runs rings around just about everything else falls short of my Acer Icona A501 for this...:crying:
I used a 1A externa battery to power an HDD and it worked just fine on the Note. The HDD was NTFS, but I used USB Mass Storage Watcher and mounted the partitions.
To get it ti power on you need a split USB/ power cable.
Yeah, my Acer A700 has this ability but unfortunately the Samsung Note doesn't have the power.
The fix is to buy a self-powered USB hub... Or use high capacity thumb drives.
Or use a hard drive with provisions for external power.
I plugged my ext powered hd but still no luck. Oh wells! Or maybe split line usb and ac like someone recommended
Thanks guys!

Split USB is your best bet. No hub needed, just an external source of power like a portable battery.
Yeah, but it bites my kickass up-to-date sammy tablet is put in its place by my 18 month old Acer Iconia A501 that supports the 1Tb 2.5" HDD with no problem.
I think this bites a bit. Makes life hard If I need more storage than most thumb drives supply...
No how am I supposed to take a veritable video store with me to watch....
If you could run an external hd via USB it would drain the battery pretty quickly.
Nope, get at least 6 hours of watching videos from the 1Tb hdd on the acer Iconia A501... The battery is not as beefy as the SGnote 10.1's either...
Just an oversite by samsung...
Just a pain now having to carry 2 tablets around...

It won't because the Note will not provide power to the HDD, you have to use external power.
Hi All
Finally been able to order a TF700 from Amazon in the UK, I'm off travelling around Europe at the end of next week and intend to take the 700 with me, my question is can I take my external 1TB drive with me and use it as storage (for films, music etc)
Thanks all in advance
Should be doable, although much depends on the power consumption of the drive -- I haven't got a portable model on hand to test it for you. A power-hungry model could either drain the battery too fast to be practical, or it may just be plain impossible to power it from the tablet, causing it to just bork out on you.
Obvisouly, a powered model would cope just fine, but that's not very practical when travelling, isn't it? I have read reports of people using external hard drives on the TF700 before, so I guess it shouldn't pose too much of a problem, though.
Off-topic: where are you going?
assuming you have the keyboard dock too, not only for the USB port but for the extra battery capacity too.
but my WD 750gb works just fine!
I'd suggest MXPlayer 'cause the stock apps suck at decoding divx and other random container formats.

Cool thanks, just ordered a Toshiba Stor.e Alu 1TB (ebay special buy) which is bus powered, should both be here on the 2nd so will plug it into the dock to check.
I am heading down to Spain as I have an apartment there then going to see where the mood takes me, I have 3 months off work (well I say off work, taking the Infinity with an RDP program and my iPhone so I can tether the data) that way I can still work from where ever I am!
The infinity + dock seems the perfect device for me, can carry it easily, brilliant battery life and the full qwerty keyboard.
I plugged a 500GB bus powered USB drive into the dock USB port and it works great!
My 2TB Western Digital MyPassport works just fine. I did format it to get rid of the silly software, though. Don't really notice any powerdrain at all.
I've somewhat accomplished this before with a 2-usb hard drive. The main usb port for transferring I plugged into the infinity, and I plugged the port for power into a portable external battery. It was recognized as another SD card on my infinity. It worked flawlessly when transferring 800MB+ files.

Yup. It works. Mine is WD 1TB, connected via USB of the dock.
I've tried plugging in a standard usb drive (8gb thumb drive) in the usb port before but I can't browse to it in the stock file browser,"external storage"just shows as empty. Do you use a special app for that?

Not only is an external a great solution, and works perfectly with the dock. It also has a really nice transfer rate. I was getting over 20mb/ps transferring from my 128gb flash drive to the micro sd. I have yet to spring for a 128 sdxc for the dock, but it's on my list.
So far I tried:
- External usb 2.0 disks
- Wireless mouse
- Linksys usb to ethernet
- Usb sticks
The dock's usb port seems to accept anything: even ethernet that allows me to even use my Infinity in the basement of my house (only wired connections there)

I'm one of those people that traded in there TF201 for TF700... I know this was asked and answered early on in the TF201 threads, so I guess I just carried over from there and never bothered asking it again.
For those that care I also had success with a USB 3.0 External right away. It comes with a secondary USB to power cable but that has never actually needed to be used. The USB 3.0 is actually an internal from my laptop in a USB 3.0 case (Put a SSD in lappy ). So long story short USB 3.0 devices should also work but at 2.0 speeds.

I did the same thing with my laptop, but shortly there after, I came to realize that I wasn't using it at all in complete favor of my TF201/700.... Now I've got a lappy with a pretty 120 ssd, and not being used. Coincidentally, I have more space than that in my tablet now...
right so that we have established that external USB hdd's work, what about external dvd drives and other external devices?

I can test it tomorrow, but I would imagine the storage part of it would work. The issues you would run into is not being able to write to it, not being able to play a regular dvd movie as it would have to be mp4 formatted, and other minor issues that require software support.
We already know gamepads, keyboards, mice, flash drives, sd card readers, and other such work..
Hi everyone! It appears really not so simple to make LTE version to support NTFS-formatted hard drives. First, LTE version does not give enough power to USB port to support hard disks. Unlike Wi - Fi version, or phablets like Note 3 or Note 2, which do not have any problem with that. That is already disappointing. May be there is any patch to solve this problem? Otherwise only solution left is to connect hard drives with extra power supply, from external battery for example, and by doing this to sacrifice mobility. Secondly, even if you managed to make your hard drive work with Note 12.2 LTE, it does not support NTFS, not even with root and special software like one from Paragon, which works with most of other devises. That's because SELinux is set to Enforcing mode in Note 12.2 LTE, and for NTFS support Permissive mode is needed. And to be able to change it to Permissive, one should, I've heard, to flash custom kernel to devise, which is really too much for getting such a simple functionality as NTFS support...
So, the question is, is there any other way, more easy and simple?
And the other question is, why Google (and Sumsung) made such a big deal out of such a basic functionality as this? Really, really disappointing...
Uh, the LTE version powers external hard drives just fine... It has no issue reading my 3 NTFS 2TB WD Elements drives over the official OTG cable. Even three at the same time over a USB hub.
Au contraire, it's the Exynos that lacks the power. The Snapdragon 800 has never had an issue with powering external HD's.
It can READ it just fine. It plays videos, music and magazines perfectly well.
Writing, however... Well, it's Linux. Linux has always hated NTFS.
I've got one additional 2TB drive formatted in exFAT. Supports files up to over several terabyte in size and you can read/write to it on pretty much every system, including Android. (except older Windows.)
They did not incorporate NTFS because NTFS is licensed and patented by Microsoft.
If you have root try Paragon NTFS AND HSF app. Did not tried on my Note Pro (no root) but work well on Note 10.1 the first.

Well, that's really good news! Thanks.
But what you mean by "official OTG cable"? I've got one, official from Samsung, bought in Samsung store, which was working well with Note 2 and working well now with Note 3, and doesn't work with my Note 12.2 LTE. But this cable is USB 2.0, so I thought may be USB 3.0 is needed. But in all official Samsung stores where I tried to find it (in two countries) they told me that official OTG USB 3.0 still did not come on market. So, what cable do you have? Is it 2.0 or 3.0? And where did you get it?

I've got the one meant for the S2/S3. Bought it through a local webshop, Bol.com. (horrendously unreliable shop, don't order there.)
There are no USB3.0 OTG cables as of yet from Samsung.
Samsung ET-R205UBE USB-OTG
EAN: 8806071451787
That's weird. It loaded the day I bought the OTG cable, but now it gives me a 'blank sdcard' error. (I was going to take a screenshot.)
Yet when I get impatient and just pull out the drive (loading 2TB takes ages on anything), it briefly displays all the folders.
I've got pretty much everything formatted to exFAT these days, though. Oh the hassle of having to deal with Apple users... (which also doesn't support NTFS ootb. Linux, again.)

Well, anyway that's not good...

I find this very frustrating. I know this tablet is more than capable of reading any drive in any format. I bought the AT&T LTE version because I wanted the snapdragon. Now I find out that I cannot mount my drive, which is NTFS due to not being able to set the kernel permissive. I've tried everything except flash the newly posted Verizon Kernel. I wanted to use this as a laptop replacement. I might have to return it now. I don't want to have to reformat. Plus I have too many files on here already and no where to place them while I reformat the drive. This feature works fine on my galaxy note 8.0.

I have the Note pro LTE 12.2 through AT&T and it doesn't supply enough power to read from any of my external hdds. I've tested 8 drives from 64gb to 500gb with 6 different brands, all self powered. Every single drive works great with my note 3 using the same cables. Note 3 and 12.2 were bought from at&t the second they were available. It would appear the LTE 12.2 just doesn't supply enough juice. My coworker has a WiFi model that my drives work with. I can also attach a Samsung external CD rom drive to my note 3 and his 12.2 and run dvds. I can't on my LTE 12.2 note pro.
Signature sooooo out of date. Been away awhile.

Exfat, fat32 has NOTHING to do with it. The needle clicks and the light flashes on the drives. The CD won't fully spin up on the cdrom. If I use a drive that's externally powered, it reads Exfat, ntfs, and fat32 all day long. The tablet doesn't supply enough power for self powered hdds. Has nothing to do with format. Not sure how much clearer I can get.
If power is the issue the one could use one of these and supply power through the second plug.

Not sure how much clearer I can get.

I knew what you meant the first time, cheers.
My WD Elements 2.5" USB3 1TB Fat32 formatted drive loads just fine. Achingly slow, but fine. (It takes about 10 minutes.) The 320GB NTSF version is a little quicker, but gives me an error.
Mind you, my OLD WD Elements (still USB3 though) does the same as you mention, clicking, displaying an empty drive and not fully starting up. The newer drives don't have this issue.
Back to the subject: so, any ideas how to run NTFS?
I am still waiting for my cable, so I cannot test, however on previous hardware, I was succeful in using below solutions without need of kernel support!
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155363
it does install additional binaries that can be used to mount exfat and NTFS stuff from userspace without kernel module or inbuilt support for above filesystems. It did work for me on other device, on CM11 based rom; also I have used it on Jelly Bean ROMs heavily, (even if somtimes not directly out-of-the-box then I was at least able to trigger the mount command manually or by creating .mountpoint files etc - see description in the topic)

A to dla odmiany appka która aż zadziwia - po prostu DZIAŁA(ła) na JB, ktory od momentu instalacji samodzielnie montował ntfs'y bez jakichkolwiek dalszych pytań... Nie wiem czy kompatybilna z kk.
