Does anybody else think the Moto G's screen is too blue? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's not a bad screen at all but I can tell the screen is a bit more blue than it should be. I wonder if there can ever be a kernel control to dial down the blue, or maybe an update will help color correct it.

No, not at all blue

Nope. The white point on the one I just received is perfect...a tad on the warm side, but not obviously 'yellow' or anything like that. Colors look very natural. I'm extremely impressed; this is a WAY better screen than what's in my Nexus 4.

It's possible, but it may not necessarily be easy. There is an LCD calibration and gamma control/adjuster app for Nexus 4 that I use to make the image on my N4 more acceptable, but it is *very* specific to the N4. In fact, it requires a particular kernel be running on it just to work (definitely not the stock one). Who knows how involved such a task would be on the G, or how soon anybody will realistically be able to tackle it.

...so, Motorola is probably using multiple display vendors, and each one's display has different qualities/traits. I suppose it could also just be "acceptable" variation from display to display coming off of the assembly line of one manufacturer. (Display inconsistencies drive me nuts, too. You shouldn't have to play a "lottery" to get an acceptable display; ugh.)

The screen on my Moto G is very good. Not too blue at all. I actually compared it to my Nexus 5 side by side and the colors are definitely more vibrant, colorful and sharp on my G. The whites are whiter on the 5 and have a very slight yellow tint on the G but other then that the screen is fantastic. I was very surprised.

Yea my screen is nice on my g. It is little yellowish on white but I have no complaints on my end
Sent from my XT1034 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Mine tends to hue towards the blue but only ever so slightly. Compared next to partners nexus 5 my moto g colours seem to 'pop' more, i.e. have more vibrancy, but her nexus 5 tends to have more natural accurate colour reproduction.
Also the image on my g feels like its seated behind glass whereas the nexus almost feels like your touching the image (read: closer to the surface). Must be to do with the screen coatings or something.

The highly detailed anand tech review also talks in depth about the blue ness of this screen
Sent from Samsung Chat

Nope, when I put it next to my galaxy mega, it's actually warmer. And my mega has a pretty neutral screen.
Compared to my mega, the screen of the moto g is dimmer, and the colors are a bit dull.

Backlight colour variation is a fact of life with white LED backlight - the LEDs are manufactured and then sorted into bins of particular characteristics, and to attain a better cost a manufacturer may specify several bins are acceptable. A device manufacturer might not even specify which bins the backlight for their device should come from, leaving it to the display module manufacturer to choose.

holy shiet faux kernel! i didnt even see it
and yeah, and if faux's kernel does fix it we would have a great display tbh

Faux kernel doesn't yet support colour calibration however I think moto g has perfect mixture of colours as
the whites look crystal white while all the other colours are very accurate and are saturated but not so much.
It has better colour representation than my 2nd gen Nexus which has very excellent screen.

I feel that the contrast for dark colours is not ideal at my phone. When in game in in shade I feel like it was night...

I think it is too yellow

I find my screen has a pinkish hue to it. Does not bother me at all though.

Color calibration?

Is there any way to change the color calibration on the display? I want to raise the blue levels because I'm a bigger fan of a cool color tone and the whites on the g2x are more than an off white. (compared to my mt4g with good lcd where whites are bright white)
I have heard about the color calibration hack for the nexus one but I don't know if it'll work on the leaded gingerbread ROM from paul o'brien
If you don't know what I'm talking about go to the color settings on your computer monitor or tv and change from "cool" to "normal". The g2x is more like the normal setting while i like the cool setting better.
I posted a link already. There is a calibration tool in the Nexus One forums that you can use. I don't think the G2x needs it though. Mine looks natural.

I'm fine with all the colors except for white, I'm a bigger fan of a more bluish white like on the iphone.
I'll give the nexus one thing a try but i think a bunch of people who tried it on the g2x it force closed. Not sure about the leaked gb rom though so I'll try it and report back
the flash aborted because it says amend scripting is no longer supported since android 1.5?
I also tried installing both apk's and they both force close when I try to do anything
pretty sure you have to be on cm7 for it to work
Is it just my specific device or are the whites on this phone not really true white but more like off-white? If u compare it to the mytouch 4g with good lcd there's a big difference. Although this device does have truer blacks.

Every LCD is different. Even if the phones are the same model. Mine has a bit of a red tint when showing white but its only noticeable if I look at it next to my Vibrant.

I know different phones have different color tones but I just wanted to know if it was just my device where whites weren't true white because some people have been talking about a yellow or orange tint. I'm expecting a replacement phone to arrive next week so I guess I'll do a comparison when it arrives.
Looks fine to me, but really I'm all about resolution. Colors can vary and sounds can be medium quality and I probably won't notice a difference.

My wife is using my old Nexus One. I tried giving her my G2X but she didn't like it because of tendency for whites to have a red tint to them. For example if you go into the Dropbox or Facebook app on the G2X there is a definite red tint, but if you go into the same apps on the Nexus One there is a slight green/blue tint while on the Moto Atrix 2 (changed to get 850Mhz 3G for DTAC Thailand) there is almost no tint (more true white). I guess all the various types of display panels (LCD, SLCD, OLED and iPS) have their different peculiarities. If I could shift the color to a truer white, I think she would then like the G2X. I guess the OLED display on the Nexus One spoiled her, but I think my Moto Atrix 2 has the truest color of the three.

I loved the display for the year I used the phone. Then when I went to the Moto the colors were more vibrant and true. I did not notice the red tint until my wife gave me the phone back and said it bothered here and wanted to keep the Nexus One instead. The Nexus One is starting to run out of memory, etc. and I need to get her stepped up to a better Android phone soon. I will check out the app you mentioned. Thanks.

A fix for the yellow-ish display

I really like the phone and think the screen is fine in most areas...but it's very yellow. The whites aren't really whites and, compared to my HTC One, the difference is striking. Yes, I know the One has an extremely cold screen while the Nexus has a warm screen, but there has to be a happy medium here, right? I think this is clearly just a calibration problem that can be fixed with a software tweak, so does anyone have any ideas? It's literally the only thing I'm not happy about.

Maybe it can be adjusted for in software, but I don't believe this is just a calibration issue. I also don't think it's color temp, precisely, because that should be either bluish cold or reddish warm, not urine yellow (sorry, best way to describe it). I've seen this on many devices over the last few years, from ASUS Transformers to iPads to the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. The only device I've bought where I didn't have at least one with a yellow screen was my Nexus 4, and I'm pretty sure I was just lucky the first time out--plenty of people complained about this on their Nexus 4s.
I think it's some kind of manufacturing variability, with the intended design specs (and software calibration) to have truer whites and deeper colors (washed out UI colors go along with the yellow tint). Personally, I can't accept it--the problem also shows itself as a lack of contrast in UI elements, such as the browser address bar against the background gray, or text fields in Hangouts. On the yellowish displays, there's almost no contrast, and so the fields can actually be hard to make out sometimes.
Thing is, if you never have two devices to hold side-by-side, then you may never notice the issue. You'll just think that colors are washed out, because that's more obvious by itself than the off-color whites.
I went through four iPad 3s before getting one with true whites, and more Nexus 7s and Nexus 10s than I'll admit to. I just hate it, personally, and honestly the Nexus 5 hasn't been so great so far that I'll go through the same number to get one that's acceptable. I have a replacement on its way (my audio output is also a bit distorted), and if that one's the same then I might give up on this year's Nexus and get an LG G2 instead.

Interesting. Yesterday I was actually angry and posted the phone on Swappa. Today I've been much nicer toward the subject. But if it's really due to the manufacturing process, I might just swap it for a Moto X. Either way, I'm not sure. I still need to decide.

Best thing would be to wait for the dev's and see what they come up with. They did great with the N4, so I'm hoping it'll be the same on the N5. I do think the display is incredibly warm. Having it side by side with my N4 is striking.

Yes, thanks, you're right--color temp does go through yellow as it gets warmer before getting to red. So, thanks for the correction.
That said, it's not a _consistent_ thing, or at least hasn't been in the past with other devices. I have a Nexus 10, for example, that is much colder (with white whites, not blueish, so I'm calling it right in the middle) than many others that I tried out side-by-side. It also seems to get better with given devices as the manufacturing process goes on--for example, it was a problem early in the lifecycle of the iPad 3 but then became consistently over time (if forum complaints about it can be taken as evidence).
So, personally, I think that it's simply very difficult to make consistent LCD panels with these resolutions and at these price points. Perhaps someone like LG does a better job of quality control in making their higher-priced G2 than they do screens for their Nexus 5; I haven't read about this being a problem with the LG G2's screen, which I think is similar technology.
Anyways, it definitely makes an impact on the quality of the experience. I might be much more sensitive to it than others, and some people might actually prefer their screen warmer--although I wonder if they would if they hold it next to a screen that has truer whites. Really, the difference in contrast is what's most striking, to me at least.

Oh, and, I think you're right about the brightness levels as well-it does seem to get a touch better when the screen is brighter.
this also happened with the iphone 5s..it was fixed a few weeks later..our phones have only just been made and the glue takes on average 2 to 3 weeks to dry completely and then become transparent..relax
Here's a really good article discussing what's going on here: http://www.eizo.com/global/library/basics/color_temperature_on_an_LCD_monitor/
Look at about 3/4 down the page, they have examples that demonstrate what we're seeing quite nicely. Not only are whites more yellow, but to my eyes colors wash out the warmer the display.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is the same as the glue issue. That's typically only on parts of the screen, and I've seen this too many times on other devices where out of the box one is terribly warmer than another and it never resolves.

You're right , when it's a glue problem usually there's just spots, not a solid yellow tone over the screen, so what can we do? try to exchange the phone, are there nexus 5 with colder screen or are they all so yellow?
I had a galaxy nexus with a terribly yellow screen, let me tell it NEVER got better , even after months of use :crying:
This video shows the difference between the N4 and N5. Wait until it gets to the browser speed comparison, you can see the screen is yellower on the N5 and the UI contrast is less. Note that the apparent difference on mine is much greater, so either this is variation or the video mutes the difference.

Comparing my Nexus 5 by eye to my calibrated (sRGB, 6500k white point) monitor, the Nexus 5 has a very slight blue push. The Nexus 4, however, is INCREDIBLY blue. Like 9300k blue. If you're used to the Nexus 4, the Nexus 5 will look yellow, but it's the Nexus 4 that is out of whack in this case.

Color Mode? New Feature

So I have no idea how no one has noticed or mentioned about this feature in the new Moto X Pure Edition but it has a new feature under display settings called "Color Mode" where you can now choose between "normal" and "vibrant" screen colors.
Since they moved this year from AMOLED to TFT LCD this year I guess they wanted to give us an option to choose from

He has the black/dark trim
So I will say after switching between modes for the past couple days, on and off. Vibrant mode is definitely the better color mode. With normal the colors seem more washed out and whiter, while vibrant makes the colors darker and less white, while at the same time making the whites whiter(if that makes sense)

Depends on what your definition of better is. The normal mode provides more accurate colors than vibrant mode, nearly matching my 2015 MacBook Pro. Most people are just used to oversaturated screens, especially those coming from AMOLED screens, so they will probably prefer the vibrant mode. I'm just glad Motorola gave us the option because everyone has their own preference between accurate and sexy and this way we can all be happy.
This is true, I will agree with you there
I prefer more accurate color reproduction within the limits of the display technology. My eyes hurt when dealing with high contrast screens. But superficially, "vibrant" will seem better, just like how people will gravitate towards the TVs in a store with the higher contrast and brighter colors even if it's just a setting. Having had a couple TVs professionally calibrated in the past, I'm not into artificially adding more color than exists normally. Vibrant probably crushes blacks too.
Saturated just has more punch and seems more contrasty. I refer color accuracy. The blacks are probably blacker on normal mode, just the whites don't get as bright so the blacks lose their depth. Speaking from experience in general, and not having moto x in hand experience.

[Discussion] Fix yellowish screen on Moto G4 plus

Hello,
Though it never really bothered me but I see that there's a lot of buzz regarding this yellowish tint on screen of Moto G4 plus.
To fix it, well here's what you can do.
1. You need a rooted phone
2. Flash EX Kernel on the phone.
3. EX Kernel Manager app or Trickster Mod app from play store.
In EX Kernel app go to graphics and then to advanced color control.
Set RGB values to:
Red = 240
Green = 240
Blue = 256
Now I'm not sure if this EX Kernel has the RGB calibration and I can't really figure out if it worked. Though I did feel my screen to become more vibrant.......
So it's in discussion...... And I would be glad if you could try it and see if it makes a difference. It's no harm anyway, it's just an app and it's worth a try.
I'll be obliged if you people put your thoughts too.
Alright people, it does work, however values are
Red= 235
Green = 235
Blue = 256
It's great.:good:
Too much blue light is not good for your brain, especially at night. The original setup it was like that for a reason.

You are absolutely right about the blue light thing...... But when in sunlight, u need to increase the blue for comfortable reading....
And average bluelight value below 270 is fine and it can't go above 256 so..... It shouldn't be much of a problem.....
Yes. There is that adaptive display...
When I first got my G Plus, the screen looked distinctly yellow. But after only a couple days it normalized and now it looks like a normal screen compared to others. Maybe it's the glue curing thing or whatever.
