[Q] Cowboom sale -- should I get one? - Windows Phone 8x by HTC

CowBoom has just placed the T-Mobile HTC 8X on sale for $179.99.
http://www.cowboom.com/product/1414673/
I've been planning to move from Android to Windows Phone for some time. Is this a good phone with which to do so?
Are there any downsides to the HTC 8X?
Thanks in advance,
Rich

I actually just brought an 8X off of there to get my mom for Christmas. I enjoy Windows Phone and feel it'll be a great phone for her.
One drawback I've noticed so far is that you can't disable the haptic feedback on the front buttons. I had an HTC Arrive and was able to disable the feedback on the buttons with the 7.8 update.

28 Games and 14 Apps for a devices that was never meant to be an application-based device shows pretty good support in my books.
The Zune HD is a media player, not an app device like an iPod touch and was said to be so on many occasions by Microsoft.
Why are you posting that question in this thread? You should make a separate one.
As for the question, I saw this and I'm glad it is finally coming; back when the HD7 came out for Tmobile iI liked the design and screen size but windows mobile 7 is just too simple for me.

Its basically a refresh of an 8 month old phone same as the htc inspire was old tech.
Doing know why att is trying to get us to buy such old tech instead of selling us something new.

My sentiments pretty much the same. The HD7 was nice, the HD7S would be nicer. But the new tech with NFC and front facing camera, higher res displays, dual core CPUs and all that should be arriving around the first half of next year precludes any hardware purchase right now.

I love WP7 but this is sort of a huge **** you to all their loyal T-mobile customers. Despite the buyout the HD2 and HD7 were the T-mobile phones to have. Now they took away T-mobiles biggest hardware selling point and the only reason to jump onboard T-mobile now is data packages. WP7 > android, that is all.

It's not a joke. It was over Engadget. The HD7S is, unfortunately, real.

Samsung focus.

Guys I have ordered a new at&t unlocked Samsung focus from Ebay India at $ 300. Phone will be arriving in about five days time.
What do you think about the price considering the specs and the upcoming mango update? Will I be able to update in India?
One more question: in Android we have audio effects in gingerbread. Do we have some audio effects like thing in windows 7 which works on videos as well?

It's easy to upgrade to mango RTM. Lots of info in these forums even if you can't upgrade "officially". As far as the price goes I really have no idea about unlocked phone costs in India. I got mine for $200 on ebay but it's locked to at&t.
Focus is a great phone, you'll love it.

As for me it's pricy. Recently I've bought used Focus (but in perfect shape, like a brand new, screen without any scratches) on ebay for $160 shipped (for India it will be plus $20-25). Also, you may unlock it for additional $20-30 (search forum). So, the right price should be about $200.

Well, I think $200 is when you have subscribed to at&t plan. When you buy something with a plan contract, the price of the phone is subsidized from the future inflows to the company under the contract plan.

You really got a very good deal. But if we buy something directly from US, we have to pay customs as well. Well I took the decision when I saw Dell venue pro is selling for $550 in India. Moreover, may be, I will be getting a gift phone worth $35 with this deal. In this situation my cost comes down to $265, which is less than half of Dell venue pro price in India.
Andy is releasing his rom and u are moving from O1 ? :O
Jokes apart, that is a good deal if you are in india ... I got my unlocked focus for 220 new but I am in the US ...
You can upgrade to Mango 7720 RTM ... no issues ... lots of threads are available for instructions ... I was able to go all the way from 7004 to 7720 in a few hours ...

Lol! I just bought this to play with windows phone 7. Currently have no plans of selling o1.
CM7 on o1 is pretty good and I hope Andy will be a kickass ROM too. I just love GB audio effects, multi tasking, among other numerous features in Android.
Hope to have first hand experience and comparison between Android and wp7/mango.
Btw, it seems you too have both o1 and focus. I would like to ask a few questions:
1.What is your take on windows 7/ Mango and Android?
2.Audio and audio effects in both OS.
3.Multi tasking?
4. Is Swype keyboard available in mango?
5. Any other thing you would like to point out.

Hey! Orange in my country trying to sell all theyer HTC 8X, so they sell the device $ 250 + - I think it's a great price. I wanted to know your opinion on the device (the device is not locked). I think if i would be able to install ubuntu on it it could be a nice deal, what do you think? anything i sould know b4 buying the X8 for that price?

I love the windows phone OS
i'm just so disappointed with the lack of development for the 8x. It has already reached EOL and we have nothing for it.
I might flip it on ebay for $200 depending on how much the new nokia 925 costs when it's released in the US

Is the 8X by HTC still worth it?

Hello guys, I'm really low on money and need a new smartphone. I was thinking the 8X by HTC but as far as I read it won't even get the Update 1 from the Windows Phone 8.1.
So I'm better looking something else to buy?
HTC tweeted about 3 weeks ago that they are working through some issues with the 8.1 release, and have no dates to share just yet, but says "Stay tuned for more news."

Hey, man, could you give me some details regarding the 8X? I can't find anywhere about HTC's exclusive apps, updates, performance, etc. Did the camera get any better after all theses updates from WP8? I know it's a pretty good camera and I will use it a lot so if it got better I would be really happy. How are the nights shots?
It's similar to the Lumia 925 as far as performance goes. Depending on the model you get, it will use either an LTE or non-LTE chipset. In the US, the Verizon and AT&T variants are the LTE versions. I like the camera. Haven't had any issues with it. Just change if from the default 6MP to 8 MP.
IF you care about exclusive apps, get a Lumia HTC doesn't have any to write home about.
Here is a review of the AT&T model http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/htc-8x-review-windows-phone-8s-compact-flagship/

Thanks, apreciate your analysis. Lumia 925 has good performance so I'll be satisfied, as far as I know the version on Asia doesn't have LTE and it's not a problem to me.
Actually I care about the HTC exclusive apps, I think HTC has great customizations so I'd like to try them. The camera app always got my attention, the blinkfeed is pretty cool, etc. I know Nokia has much more apps but none of them gets me right, my mother-in-law has a Lumia 520 that I recomended so I'm familiar with Nokia apps. Besides, HTC 8X is much more well designed than any windows phone, only Lumias 925 and 930 can be considered beautifully designed as well.
I read the review, its a pretty good phone, comfortable to hold and not too big, though the screen could be bigger for the phone size. I also read this review(HTC 8X camera review) with emphasis on the camera and I was happy to know that the software can automatcally slow down the sutter speed to get better images.
those apps you are referring to are exclusive to the HTC One M8 for Windows. They don't even show up in the store when I search for them on my 8X!

This can't be right, I've seen in some videos on YouTube that the 8X has HTC apps on Windows Phone. Maybe cause you're using a preview version for developers this support is not added yet, this happens in other plataforms as well.

It has some OEM apps, but not BlinkFeed. Love this phone, just ordered my third one.
Go for it, its worth the Money. In my country it is under $150, lower than any matching Lumia.
But if you see both phones side by side, Lumia is crap. I m using it for last one year, (switched from iPhone 5) and still comfortable with it.
As already told, it can have 8.1 under developer preview option.

Yeah, but blink feed isn't essential. Would be good if HTC release it's apps for download, it will release the HTC Camera on Play Store.
What do you mean third one? Don't you even try newer phones? Good to know, I'll keep your passion in mind.
Just ordererd a second-handed 8X from ebay and is now waiting for it ($80 free shipping)
Having used the WP7-era HTC surround, I think HTC's OEM specific apps isn't something that'll hold you from getting the DP updates.... They just don't feel as natural as they are on Android (if you can make Blinkfeed as the default page then that's another history...)
Anyway, for the price those 8X are hanging around on eBay, they're pretty good deals if you need a new (old) phone

Rot? That's strange, what kind? I really like HTC phones and the M8 for Windows is my current passion, too bad the price doesn't allow me to buy one.
Even if you like the 8X this much the only way I have to buy one is importing a refurbshed from China, so I rather buy some chinese smartphone. I'm still avaluating the situation.

Bit rot is just a name for the slowness and buggyness that comes to Android after a while of using it. Resetting the phone solves it, but it comes back again. Windows Phone and Ios avoids the problem by sandboxing apps etc. My first 8X i bought in store, a regular euro version. My second and third, both Verizon edition, i bought on eBay.

Got it, Android does have this problem with long lasting stability and solidness. It's, however, getting much better and providing improved user experienced that was missing when compared with Windows Phone.
How are the camera of the 8X for macro shots? I will use a lot of the camera. 16GB of memory is ok for Windows Phone? I didn't have any trouble with space on Android.

I couldn't say about macro shots, since I've naver taken any myself. Generally I'd say the 8X has a great camera for its current price class, but obviously it can't compete with a 930 or something like that. WP takes up less space than Android, so you should be fine with 16 GB.
If you do get an 8X then make sure you get the Verizon edition for the wireless charging

The Nokias are in a different level when it comes to camera, mainly the PureView series. But the fotographer counts a lot, I've seen some crazy photos with this Lumias and with the HTC 8X I'd get great results.
Great news, then. Space is something that will always worry me once it don't get an expansion slot.
Unfurtnatly the Verizon model don't work in my country, has to be the unlocked or AT&T models because of the net. Besides, the wireless charging isn't a big deal for me.
For the price I'm trying to decide between the Sony Xperia T and the HTC 8X. Thinking in system and overall hardware the 8X takes the leadership, but when it comes to back camera and flexibility the Xperia T appears on top.

Are you quite sure about the Verizon edition not working in your country? Strange, as it's supposed to be a worldphone. It works great here in Norway, except for the 4G which is the wrong band. Wireless charging isn't really something you think about, but it's a massive convenience if you do have it, so I'd reccommend checking that out if you're not 100 % sure.
Anyways, If I were you then I'd choose the OS first, then the phone. If you're looking for the most features for your money then Android is probably the way to go.

Can't decide what phone to get next

So I have a Galaxy S4 I've had for a year (before that I had the S3) with Verizon and I'm really tired of this locked bootloader crap. I'm kind of on a budget, so I could use some advice.
I really just want a phone that's as close to stock as possible and can be easily rooted/flashed. So, ideally a Nexus 5 or 6. I also saw HTC phones and Motorola phones on Verizon's web site, but I don't know if those phones are locked or not.
I would like to trade in my old phone and sign up for a contact as leverage, as I can't afford paying too much. Any advice would be appreciated.
On a budget, get a used phone from last year off eBay or here on Swappa, and you won't even have to re-up your contract. HTC M7, LG G2, Moto X (especially Developer Edition), one of the Droids. They should all be rootable, but I can't speak individually for unlocked bootloaders.

Thanks for the recommendation I'll check it out. I'm most interested in Nexus, HTC, LG, or Moto. Would I be able to trade in my S4 for some value?
I suggest you to go for HTC M8. This device is really stylish.
This device
1. Feels nicer to hold.
2. Knock on feature.
3. seems faster
4. Takes a micro sd card.

you can have a contract plan ,then cellphones is relatively cheaper .as for online shopping ,
you need to ask them for details if their cellphones are unclocked or not to avoid any
trouble .
Oneplus one...had some invites...all shared ;p
+1 for OnePlus One, great phone for cheap price.
People say the nexus has terrible battery life, so accordong to this, I wouldn't recommend you to buy one. I'd recommend you to buy a moto g though, since it's actually a smaller version of a nexus, and allegedly has better battery life, but more of that I'd recommend either an htc one m8 or an lg g3, if your wallet can handle the price. Now, about off-contract, I'd suggest the oneplus one, because it's a flagship killer and it's relatively cheap, as said above.
I recommend the LG G3...the bootloader can be sort of unlocked via Bump, but the LG Rom is pretty close to stock, doesnt add too much extras. It has a great camera and awesome screen, SD Card and removable 3000mAh battery. It's a nice phone! I will agree that Nexus phones have very poor battery life, but you can install just about anything on them in terms of ROMs. If sticking with GSM, the OnePlus One is nice too but I'm not sure where that company is going with CyanogenMod and OnePlus on the fritz. They will probably have to develop their own rom in the future, unless you want to load the CyanogenMod version, which you can do that too. Moto X phones are good, battery life would still be my concern, but its as close as stock as you can get besides nexus.
I'm probably going to look at the MotoX or droid Turbo.. I'll check out the OPO. I guess I have some hw to do. I'm using Verizon's edge plan, and I don't think that's a traditional contract. I also need to look at and see what kind of development is going on for each of these devices.
People mentioned eBay and Amazon.. Are there any sites that are specifically for buying/trading used phones?

I agree with you. I have also noticed that the camera quality of HTC devices is relatively low than Samsung devices.
