Samsung focus. - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys I have ordered a new at&t unlocked Samsung focus from Ebay India at $ 300. Phone will be arriving in about five days time.
What do you think about the price considering the specs and the upcoming mango update? Will I be able to update in India?
One more question: in Android we have audio effects in gingerbread. Do we have some audio effects like thing in windows 7 which works on videos as well?

It's easy to upgrade to mango RTM. Lots of info in these forums even if you can't upgrade "officially". As far as the price goes I really have no idea about unlocked phone costs in India. I got mine for $200 on ebay but it's locked to at&t.
Focus is a great phone, you'll love it.

As for me it's pricy. Recently I've bought used Focus (but in perfect shape, like a brand new, screen without any scratches) on ebay for $160 shipped (for India it will be plus $20-25). Also, you may unlock it for additional $20-30 (search forum). So, the right price should be about $200.

Yeah, right (I've got unlock code for free from AT&T; so I didn't follow corresponding topic).

Well, I think $200 is when you have subscribed to at&t plan. When you buy something with a plan contract, the price of the phone is subsidized from the future inflows to the company under the contract plan.

You really got a very good deal. But if we buy something directly from US, we have to pay customs as well. Well I took the decision when I saw Dell venue pro is selling for $550 in India. Moreover, may be, I will be getting a gift phone worth $35 with this deal. In this situation my cost comes down to $265, which is less than half of Dell venue pro price in India.

Andy is releasing his rom and u are moving from O1 ? :O
Jokes apart, that is a good deal if you are in india ... I got my unlocked focus for 220 new but I am in the US ...
You can upgrade to Mango 7720 RTM ... no issues ... lots of threads are available for instructions ... I was able to go all the way from 7004 to 7720 in a few hours ...

Lol! I just bought this to play with windows phone 7. Currently have no plans of selling o1.
CM7 on o1 is pretty good and I hope Andy will be a kickass ROM too. I just love GB audio effects, multi tasking, among other numerous features in Android.
Hope to have first hand experience and comparison between Android and wp7/mango.
Btw, it seems you too have both o1 and focus. I would like to ask a few questions:
1.What is your take on windows 7/ Mango and Android?
2.Audio and audio effects in both OS.
3.Multi tasking?
4. Is Swype keyboard available in mango?
5. Any other thing you would like to point out.

Palm Pré

So I have an upgrade through at&t and I was thinking about getting Palm Pré because I have some cash laying around. Maybe someone from here could give me a little feedback on the device? I'd keep my nexus but I'm just getting a little tired of it and I want something new for the time being.

Got ADD?
I'm up for contract and thinking of the pre as well. But I have a hard time justifying it as the pre is over 1 year old already. And web OS rocks, but I'm not too sure about its hardware.
WebOS has some great things going for it as a mobile OS, but the market is just too crowded. You'd be backing a horse that isn't even in the race, let alone one that is behind.
WebOS is amazing. I convinced my brother to get it (long time Blackberry user) for Verizon when it came out in January and there were no good Android phones out (he didn't like the Droid).
However... You'd have to be insane to get locked into a new two year contract with a Palm Pre today. With HP backing them now, the Palm Pre 2 will probably be announced soon.
Purchasing 14 month old hardware is a terrible idea; you'll be regretting it less than a quarter of the way through your contract.
Personally, I would never buy another phone from today on that doesn't have a CPU faster than a Snapdragon.

Amen! Although now, I'm not going to buy another phone unless it has Tegra 2 in it
I must say that I bought it and it is amazing. If you're thinking about it do it. Plus it came with a free touchstone. This phone is bad ass and the pre plus has wel hardware. Not as solid as the nex butdoesnt feel cheap like the original palm pre

The original and the plus are identical. The only difference is the ball and the keyboard.
And no one do it...who would want to purchase 14 month hardware to use for 24 months?
Yeah, don't do it. Definitely not a good investment right now, no question about it.
Since when does At&t carry the pre?

Getting ripped off though since Verizon's Pre is $30 and AT&T's is $150. AND Verizon's has free mobile hotspot enabled.

Not correct.
Double the ram, and an additional 8GB of storage.
I didn't even know the pre was on verizon either. lol I'm so out of the loop.
WebOS can be great, but lacks development. Hopefully it picks up with HP..

The pre wasn't an investment. Why would anyone consider this an investment? The only thing I invested in was signing another two year contract with att.
And by the way ill spend my money however I please. It wasn't a loss or anything. The phone is actually nice and the OS is great. I have a phone that runs on every major OS (bb9000, iPhone, nexus, magic, touch pro) and I wanted to simply add this to my collection. If you guys have problems then voice yourselves nicely.

yeh, is this also going to make a US release? if not our community will be qute small and there will be very little development. TBH, i cant see many peopl going for this device. they will mostlikely to forward with the dual core phones...Thats probably why o2 have mad it cheap - not many ppl are buying it
I think this has superior software, and hardware to the SGS, its also much newer... but battery life how will it be??
I'm planning on getting one but I don't fancy shelling out £400 for a sim-free unit.
I did see the o2 store having them in stock for £330.
BUT I have a few questions:
1. They can unlock it free? Don't you need to be on the network for a while and pay for them to unlock?
2. Is there any o2 branding on the back or front?
3. Is there any o2 bloatware installed?
4. Have o2 disabled any features? Such as wi-fi hotspot?
5. Is there an o2 logo on the bootscreen?
I like to have my phones clear of any bloatware and any branding. But £400 is a bit much for me for a phone.

1) they unlock it if you email them or something. i read it on the website. its free and easy. you dont need to have the phone for any required time
2) no physical o2 branding.
3) yes there is some o2 bloatware on it. such as apps, boot screen, pictures, videos, ringtones.
4) not sure. probably not.
5) yes i've seen it on the old desire.
Imo, get this and then flash an unbranded htc official rom somehow its much cheaper than buying it simfree.
Actually considering this now or SGS II as it will have a price drop and has a large community!
anyone else going for this?!

It depends who's working I guess.
You just ask if it comes with a case, if he says no, ask him/her what cases are available. Then look, then say that the cases are expensive for what they are and say you HAVE to have a case like its OCD. Then walk off. They sometimes ask you to come back and 'negotiate' a deal :L Sometimes works on contracts getting a couple months free etc.
Or say another company like phones4u have offered you a better deal. Then carphonewarehouse may give you an even better deal.
EDIT: And just make sure you know your stuff and not make things obvious. If you have been with carphonewarehouse for a while and you are due an upgrade but want to cancel, they are most likely to give you a great deal on a newer contract, but won't not a new phone, to keep you with them. My sister is on a 24months contract few hundred mins, unlimited text+internet for £15 a month with 14 months free.
They all negotiate to get commission. As long as the deal doesn't make them a loss than they should be fine.

I'm a payg customer anyway with a contract on giffgaff. so i only get simfree phones. (or can be unlocked)
my friend did that when he got his htc legend on vodaphone. thanks for the tip!
personally, im getting it from o2 payg in summer. or hopefully by then, the incredible will match its price
Looks like this may be the way to go rather than buying SIM free, which is about £380...
These guys claim to be able to unlock any HTC phone for $15.75 too (about £10).
http://www.htcsimunlock.com/
I might wait until the Desire S gets rooted though, and by that time the price will have dropped more - especially when the dual cores are out. I hope so anyway.

Mango for the Pro 7

Hi all,
I see the prices for the Pro 7 have gone down dramatically (just CHF 316 today!) and I'm getting tempted to get myself one.
But I need to be sure there will soon or later be the Mango update possible.
Can someone tell?
is no reason to mango not come for 7 Pro...
Microsoft have said that all current phones will get the update...
...I was tempted too far when it was on offer here for £220 (as opposed to £440!)
Interestingly, no other website apart from ebuyer seems to be putting any discount on the Pro 7 in the UK, so maybe it's got a strange demand pattern...
^ I noticed it on ebuyer too. I was tempted, but don't have the funds in my bank.
[edit]
I bought it..

Thanks, didn't know. Wow, 220£ is even cheaper; is this offer still ongoing?
today, the 7 pro is at 250€ on cdiscount (an important french website); it's far less than other WP7, why?

Right, even the Desire Z is at only 269 on the same shop. Maybe because devices with keyboards are niche products. They probably got stocks to get rid of before a new release. Beside, hardly anyone wants WP7.
Now do I buy one or not; this is the question...
I have HTC 7 Pro and HTC Desire Z from HTC polish distribution (no branding). HTC 7 Pro is very professionally done in comparison with Desire Z. keyboard slide mechanism is a brilliant and solid, and Desire Z is too loose and underdeveloped. Besides is a two different systems so do not compare, depends on what someone more fit. In Poland HTC 7 Pro is cost about 1500 pln =~ 378 euro and ~334 pounds but HTC Desire Z about 1100 pln = ~ 278 euro and ~ 245 pounds.
Play.com also have it for £219.99
Very tempted at that price!
o2 Germany offers it for 241€ quite some time now. If only there was a way to run Android on it...
no need to run android on such a great device that has the mango beta out now and the official version within 2 months. wp7 mango is far superior to android and iOS.
I am in the UK and know the Sprint Version is getting WP7.5 from the sounds of it, can we be sure that HTC will update the 7 Pro?
I'm replacing my Defy for a 7 Pro
Yes- it isn't up to HTC whether it gets an update, Microsoft manage updates for nonbranded devices, and they have already said that all existing devices will be getting a Mango update.

I definitely got tempted - for £220 from Handtec its a steal.
Buying for my father who's nearly 70 - no need for customising/unlocking. And WP7 is a lot easier to use than Andoid. All the complicated stuff we're into here at XDA ain't for everyone!
No need for a car kit either - the daft sod's getting banned for speeding an' all
I got my from o2 DE (240 euro).
Mango Beta 2 is running fine, also with Jailbreak. HSPL is running, so i could debrand from o2 to HTC Europe.
So, would anyone have a date in mind for me to be able to install the official mango update for me HTc 7 Pro device?
I am loving WP so far, and am very anxious after reading all those positive experiences of people that are already running Mango.
I would like to stay before the point of NoDo however and wait for the the official update (but im just impatient ).
When I was in Germany for that last 2-3 months, I went to Media Markt (in Augsburg) to check out the cool stuff there, and that's where I found an amazing discount for the HTC 7 Pro.
It dropped from 449 euros to 249 euros, and the guy told me that the offer will finish very soon, I was curious why the 7 Pro is the only WP7 device that had such a discount, but ignored my fears and purchased it right away
Later when I went on a trip to Stuttgart, I went the Media Markt branch over there and found that the price dropped again, it dropped to 229 euros !
I like it so much and I dev unlocked it (legally), the only thing I hate about it is that its keyboard layout is German (Y & Z are switched, and other minor stuff), but I'm getting used to it
Oh, and I can't wait to upgrade it to Mango once it's officially available
It seems to have gone up again here in the UK, and then most websites are out of stock.
HTC 7 PRO delayed
Just talked to HTC support, and the 7 Pro Mango is not yet ready for release... They tried but failed at installing Mango onto the device.
I'm afraid we need to be more patient than others... Jason?!?! HELP!!! ;-)
Paciencia = Paz y ciencia... Repeat after me...
Sorry but WTF ?
I have since yesterday Mango 7720 oficial update by Zune for my HTC 7 Pro unbranded.

[Q] What new phones are coming out?

I've been wanting to get a WP7 for a while now. I recently saw the LG Quantum (no contract) for $225 from Newegg. Really tempted to pull the trigger now but with Mango being released and perhaps some new devices coming out soon am I better off waiting?
I'm still trying to decide on what OS to switch to on my primary phone. Since I needed a couple of back-up/emergency/car phones, I figured instead of buying a $50 dumbphone, I might as well use the opportunity to test drive Android and WP7. Already got an Android (LG Thrive, $150 Amazon). Now all I need is a WP7 one.
P.S.
Buying a phone from Amazon or Newegg only and $250 total (inclusive of 10% tax and ship) is my upper limit on device price.
There are rumors that at least Samsung and HTC are planning WP7-related events on September 1st, which could mean new phones will be announced. Nevertheless, the current phones are a fantastic value, and if you get Mango on them, what could you possibly miss?
To me WP7 phones are really cheap at the moment. I mean 200 for Omnia 7, thats a great piece of HW at a great price!
Unfortunately I couldnt live without a kb so I had to get the Htc 7 Pro, but that was only 280 even though I didnt search much for best deals, just wanted the phone fast.
Of course prices are probably so down because they are not selling...
my advice is: buy yourself an omnia 7 or focus its a beautiful piece of hardware you wont make a mistake!
Thanks for all the replies. Alas, my tech fund got raided with the purchase of 2 HP TouchPad's this weekend so looks like I'm going to have to wait. I was watching the Nokia Sea Ray leak on YouTube and it looks to be a really nice phone. Methinks I'll wait a bit until new devices pre-installed with Mango get released. I should have my tech fund replenished in another couple of months or so.
I was wondering if there are any 4G WP7 devices to be soon released on sprint.
There will be Noka See Rey with Windows Phone 7, but i'm not sure if it will has 4g.
I have my upgrade rebate available in October. I am currently enjoying my View tablet so I thought I might try something different for my phone. Prior to android I used a WM device and I enjoyed it. I also had a zune hd so that part of the WP7 is not unfamiliar to me. I had thought about giving the new WP7 a try but I really need the 4G. Well hopefully they have something they have been keeping under wraps.

How much do you think I can resell iPhone5 for?

I have never paid attention to how much the iPhones sell for when they first come out on ebay and such. I want to get galaxy s 2 or nexus when it comes out but I have a feeling I could get more money if I just use my contract for iPhone5 and sell it then buy the phone straight out. That way if a gem with art bands come out but at doesn't have a subsidized version I can buy one. If one does come to art I imagine I could still get warranty and insurance. Anyone try this? Think it is a good idea? Or just use upgrade for gs2 or nexus?

Probably just upgrade to the other phones, and saved time , the upgrade ain't going anywhere , and BTW iPhones have great value , I sold my iPhone 4 like 2 days ago for 400$ , while I can only sell my EVO 3d around 300$, apple products have great value
from my shooter rocking myns ROM
new iphones goes for like $900 specially if it's unlocked
used ones can go as high as $500
$400 is definitely the average price
Can't believe I'm saying this but I hope the iP5 is released so I can upgrade to it & re-sell it back to pay for my future Galaxy Note UK version.

I predict that secondary market prices for iPhones are about to drop quite a bit and here's why. First, since Sprint is now an official carrier there will be more iPhones on the market, effectively driving prices down. Second, new version will be introduced to outside US markets much quicker this time, so oversees buyers are likely to opt for a short wait rather then paying a high premium for a US iPhone.
