Is there a business class android tablet? - General Questions and Answers

I'm traveling a lot for work lately and need a quality tablet. I already have a few apps to take care of Excel and things like that. I do need one that can adapt to ethernet for testing. I also need as much internal storage as possible.
I know the Surface Pro 2 can do everything I need but I would like prefer Android.
Help?

Check out for Lenovo. It is well known that this brand has a series called 'ThinkPad'. All products in this series are for business. I remember there is a tablet in this series.

I'm a bit hesitant with Lenovo. My mother has a Lenovo laptop that's used daily for work and it has not fared well, as the keyboard is falling apart, along with the buttons and CD Drive. I'd recommend Asus, the transformer series are great with the keyboard attachment.

I'm using a 4 year old Lenovo g550 which is their cheap line of laptops. It got dropped badly once and cracked part of the body and keyboard cover and the thing still works perfect today.
Their higher end ThinkPads are supposed to be even better. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Lenovo at all.

They are nice, I have seen a couple of problems on them though, some freezing and hardware issues. Honestly, I usually stick with my Acer or Asus guns.

For lenovo, i don't recommend other than the Thinkpad series. There is later version from Thinkpad called IdeaPad, but Thinkpad is still the best products ever released by lenovo. There are so many tests to ensure its power.

What do Inspire owners prefer, iPad or Google pad? And why?

All I want for Christmas is my...... I was wondering what fellow Inspire/android users are crushing on when it comes to a pad. I LOVE android with its different spaces, the HTC sense, hundreds of ROMs and widgets. Unfortunately, the iPad is kinda sweet and no one android pad has caught up. For me, I would go for an iPad simply because android lacks that one stop usability for everything that Apple has, andoid pads are overpriced and android is missing a killer office suite. If Microsoft made office lite for android and prices were lowered by 20%, android would make a dent.
Until then, I'm crushing on the iPad 3.

So it basically makes a nice colorful paperweight/kindle. ;p Most of my work is word processor/calendar/ppt intensive. I think the Atrix is a great idea if it could be perfected so that we could have a phone/pad or computer that would be our source for presentations and for sites we could use some more space on.

Played with iPad but lacked without micro sd support, hdmi out and full usb port. Use an Archos 101 Internet Tablet 8gb and now the Acer Iconia A500 and really enjoy it. It all seems to be what system and build fits your needs or your preferences. Just throwing this out there for anyone who may be interested, selling the Archos...

i love it. too bad webos failed with market penetration. its a beautiful os, but there is no app support. i am patiently waiting for a stable android build now....
Picked up the Jetstream last week and love it! Much prefer it to the ipad. The price is high but I think the specs will pay off in the longterm.
On this size screen I prefer the normal sites vs apps or mobile so the lack of honeycomb apps isn't a big deal.
We need some secs on it though. I want root!

My children love their $700 toy that is the iPad. Personally I am not crazy about tablets, I prefer my laptop. Anything I would do on a tablet I can do on my phone or laptop. This is just a personal opinion of course, if I traveled a lot, I would probably find a tablet more appropriate because of size. All that being said, I would love to sell my iPad that I haven't used in probably 8 months, but my wife won't let me because the kids love it. If I did purchase another tablet, it would be an Android powered tablet just because I prefer Android over iOS and it would probably be the Asus Transformer

Heh well until the ipad dies I am on gadget restriction as per my wife. My MacBook died a while back so I bought a new laptop without discussing it with my wife(asking for permission) so I am not allowed to buy anything until something else dies. Not really in the market for another tablet anyway, its just not practical for me. I would buy a new phone before I would buy another tablet

I have an iPad2 and enjoy it quite a bit, but I am basically an Apple guy (more Apple gear around here than I care to admit) and the iPad fits in well with the Apple ecosystem. (And yes, I own an Inspire 4G but until I bought it, I was a solid iPhone man).
Truth be told though, if the Jetstream had existed when I bought my iPad, I would have SERIOUSLY considered it instead. That is one sweet machine.
Liked the Viewsonic G-Tab, then sold it on Ebay and bought the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1", when Staples had the $100 off coupon. Couldn't be happier!
Asus transformer, B70 model and rooted ...
But seriously android tablet is insanely customizable, I had an ipod touch 4 and sold it. Why? Because even jailbroken customization was extremely limited.

[Q] Worth buying now?

Is it worth buying now or just wait for Xoom 2 or I should buy Galaxy Tab 10.1?
I have iPad 1 ,but I don't like it ,it not very productivity just game. I am now considering buying an Android Tablet.
Should I buy Xoom or Galaxy Tab 10.1? I also like to flash new ROM. Which one have more custom ROM?
Good question. My two cents...
Presumably, Google will release the source code for Honeycomb sometime soon after the release of Icecream Sandwich. It's also a (I believe widely accepted) presumption that a new model Xoom will be released soon, especially with the Christmas season approaching.
Not that Google and Motorola should really ever be expected to have their **** together enough to coordinate this correctly, from a marketing stand point it makes the most sense. It would make sense that the new Xoom would have the new OS in it.
However, two great things will happen if that's all true; three price of the Xoom 1 will drop considerably (it already has dropped pretty far), and new Honeycomb ROMs will be popping up with far better customizable interfaces and capabilities than Icecream Samich!
This is all speculation on my part, and I may be completely ignorant of some key facts, but it's the reason why I have no interest in a new tablet or Icecream Sandwich.
My last experience with this sort of thing was when I was loading my Droid 1. Even though updates were open source (TRUE O.S.), and always highly anticipated, they never really contained anything so mind blowing that I ever felt it was worth jumping to a new custom made ROM that had it.
My advice is to get a Xoom now, or just when the new one hits the market. I'm no expert and would love tosee what other members say.
Yes...I bought mine three weeks ago.
But then again I wanted a solid tab experience and the Galaxy didnt cut it for me.
Build quality is better on the Xoom IMO - and I was lucky to snag a new one at $449.
A few things that I like about the Xoom:
- Screen quality is great on my unit - even though its an AUO.
- Sound quality is the best of any tablet. Im assuming you are using this device for media consumption and you wont be disappointed with the speaker layout or sound.
- Build quality is top notch. No Flex. Gorilla Glass.
- My unit is Wifi only (I have a tether plan if needed) and the battery life even on Stock ROM and Kernel is fantastic (rooted).
- For business use I like this tablet a lot. I can have clients sign .pdf's with ease and handle Office docs easily with QuickOffice and Repligo (Worth the $20 for a business professional)
There will always be something better because of the push to create with Android. Do yourself a favor and buy this now (if you play with it and like it of course) and if you need to upgrade in a year or so then do so.

I echo those sentiments.
i agree too, i bought mine even after i found out that motorola is preparing a quad core tab for release soon, but if i kept waiting for the latest then i will never end up buying anything, and i understand that every open source tablet with android is supported with updates for 18 months maybe ? i remember i read that somewhere, so motorola and google now as one company will support updates for us till october 2012 so i am pretty sure we will also get ICS
I just put my TP on e-bay. Now my TP had a OC 1.7 dual core with a gig of ram and a great GPU and IMO the best speaker system you could want. Once honeycomb gets put on it it will rock and be one of the best tabs there are right now IMO.
But i still sold it. I need HDMI out, SD card reader and the accessory support. I got a wifi only xoom for 310 shipped on ebay.
So really its up to you lol
I bought my xoom 3g second hand for 275. Loving it. But if price wasn't an issue, I might have gone with a galaxy tab 10.1 because it is a lot lighter which I think is important for a device you are going to be hold up to read a lot. Samsung manufactures excellent screens as well.

Xoom is better imho...you got a fantastic deal. Enjoy it and don't look back.
The XOOM is so lame I would say get an iPad2, there still isn't a better tablet in terms of pure processing power. The productivity apps are more robust than anything on Android. OpenOffice, QuickOffice and the like just fall short for anyone who is serious about getting work done. Android is still too juvenile at this stage. IPS isn't much better but if you're determined to make that mistake, the iPad 2 is the smartest way to do such a dumb thing. It's more expensive than a XOOM but costs less than the ASIA EEE Slate (the Win7 one) or the Lenovo Thinkpad X220. Those are powerful tablet like machines that are great for the enterprise.

I couldn't disagree more. There's nothing juvenile about the Xoom or android. The Xoom is for people who enjoy making the tablet their own. But YMMV.

Sorry man, the iPad is really good at many things and really bad at many things. Most importantly though, the iPad is the dumbest way to do a smart thing (usually, there are exceptions). If you are truly smart, you don't need preschool level hand holding, or ridiculous restrictions, to get things done.
Android is far more likely to be used by smart people than an iPad. Sorry but it's true. This doesn't mean there are no smart people using iPads, it simply means there are more dumb people using iPads than there are dumb people using Xooms(or other Android tablets). I say this because it's simple logistics. If you are dumb and you are looking at tablets, the only guidance you are likely to get is to buy an iPad. Just go into most retail outlets and watch what they push on the inexperienced.
Also, I agree that the best tablets will be the tablets that run a full OS. However, we are at least 10-12 months away from Windows 8. I wouldn't recommend a Windows tablet until Windows 8 is released.
Having said all this, I don't really like to call people dumb. Less experienced is a more appropriate description most of the time. There are, however, some people who really are just dumb.
I have had the iPad, several crappy and cheap Android tablets, The Nook Color, Acer Iconia A500, HP Touchpad, and (as of yesterday) the Motorola Xoom.
I chose the Xoom because I think it will receive the most love from Google in the future. This is for obvious reasons. I also chose the Xoom because it has accessory and dock options, expandable memory slot, and HDMI out without any proprietary adapters. I have just started to mess with this device but I do like the feel of it and it seems to be very well built.
My initial impression, in comparison to the Iconia, is that the performance is much smoother. One of the things about the Iconia was that the stock rom was very laggy at times. I haven't noticed this with the Xoom yet. Also, there isn't any add-on crap on the Xoom either. I prefer mostly stock Android, and the Iconia had a couple (in my opinion stupid) enhancements. This may explain the difference in performance. The only cool thing, I will miss, on the Iconia is the full size USB port.
I look forward to seeing what I can do with this device. It should work well with my SGS II.
Yea..im gonna wait until after Christmas and grab me a Xoom. mainly cause i don't have the money now lol. Or else i'd grab one now. But im happy playing with my Flashed GTab for the moment.
Don't know why i NEED a Xoom. Maybe the sexiness of it. Im not a Flasher. (Mine was already flashed when i got it). So Xoom already having 3.1 and upgradeable over the air right? Should be good enough for me.

It's quite a good price. I think it should suit you fine.
Don't misunderstand. I recommended the iPad 2 for business solely because of the raw power of the cpu and the gpu. When combined with the robustness of the productivity software, it's a smarter choice for business for the money.
This isn't an emotional choice. If I had what I wanted, it would be something as powerful as the A9 processor with that gpu running win8.

Tegra 3 to become obsolete?

May be a slight exaggeration and I may have got everything wrong(in which case i apologise) but I just read this:
http://www.extremetech.com/computin...dragon-s4-eats-tegra-and-exynos-for-breakfast
Which shows tegra 3 being beaten by Qualcomm's quad core processor which may be in tablets this year. Wouldn't tegra 4 then be announced to compete, leaving tegra 3 in the dust?

Welcome to the world of mobile technology.
Tegra 3 will be outdated soon. Mobile processing and software is accelerating very fast. This time last year cutting edge tablets were running Honeycomb with Tegra 2.
Well, I was thinking of getting my tablet replaced due to a dead pixel, would I be better off just getting a refund and waiting for another tablet? It wouldn't become completely obsolete, would it?

and wathever you will buy will become obsolete in 6-10 months and wathever will make -that- obsolete will get obsolete in another 6-10 months.
if you start playing the waiting game, you will die from old age before buying anything.
just ask yourself: what apps and programs have you to run on your tablet? do they run satisfatly on xxx tablet? then buy that.

tegra 3 is based over a cortex a9 core without even Neon, so from a core efficiency perspective its not the best possible, a dual core snapdragon 4 is faster in some cases than a four core tegra 3.
this dont mean that its slow, as it is now its the fastest soc on the market and the one with the best computational power/price rateo.

Whatever you buy won't fix the problem of new hardware coming out in the future. Mobile space is just moving at a very fast pace right now. No way to avoid it or future proof your device.

haha, sorry for laughing, but do you plan on buying a new tablet every 3 months? This is what mobile technology is like. It only becomes obsolete when it doesn't do something you use it for.
Moores' Law: Technology doubles every 6 months, as the price goes in 1/2. It's impossible to keep up with it unless you've got tons of money to blow

I think 2 years would be great, but I could easily see myself selling off my TF300 in a year or so to get a newer tablet. I'm not very patient at all, and I love technology too much to not want the next best thing.
What would you do with your transformer then? Keep it or sell it?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app
I would try to sell it. I'm hoping I can get about US$200 for it when I do, but it's hard to predict resale value a year in advance. Plus, it's unlocked, which may or may not be an advantage. That would depend on the buyer. I wonder what resale value of a TF101 is atm. That would probably be a good indicator of the expected resale value of the TF300.
Its amazing how fast hardware and software advance these days. I just bought the tf300 but now it looks like it isnt the best or one of the best things out there! You just dont know what to get now because of how fast technology developes. It would be cool to see a kind of android tablet/phone open sourse hardware where you can over time update the ram or cpu or graphics card, kind of like a computer.

there's a reason if a desktop pc is as big as a suitcase...
do you want a tablet that needs a trolley and a few miles of extension power cord to be lugged around?
Well hang on a minute... I could see a mobo with a replaceable cpu/gpu to help keep up with upgrades. It's not undoable.

its doable on something as big as a desktop pc, when you have 8mm of total height clearance included the chassis and covers you cant use removable sockets or adptable spread headers, everything has to be custom fitted so, for eg. the cover themselves get in contact with the cpu and works as heat spreaders and so on.
making it so it would be user modifiable would be a nightmare of the worst degree.
OR maybe they could use correlated magnets and contact plates (instead of clips and pins).
I can see possibly designing a processor which doesn't attach to the motherboard, but just sits on top of it held in place very tightly by say... a 2mm deep groove around the outside edge corresponding to a raised rim on the board, and a set of correlated magnets.
It'd be cool to see the heat from processors being used to generate some slight recharging power. Thermocouples anyone?
I've also got an idea kicking around about the possibility of replacing the existing TF300 screen with an aftermarket 3D enabled one. After going inside the hardware yesterday, it doesn't look to difficult, of course given that such a screen eventually exists.

Thermocouple to charge the same battery that powers the heat source (CPU, etc.)? I don't think so. It's like a battery that charges itself without outside energy source. Laws of physics dabble dabble dabble..
When someone discovers or invents that, we will have world peace!
Back on topic, I just bought my tegra 3 device. I love it for its speed compared to my other devices. As long as you don't experience something faster or better, you existing device will suit you perfectly in the next 5 years. Probably longer as long as it's running.

I love the Surface hardware, but I am having some complaints on the software , especially with the mail app not working with the POP3. I am thinking to returned it and buy the lenovo even that it doesn't look as nice but because it runs windows 8 Pro. I'm thinking to install outlook and office so it should run as a PC and I can work without the work around that I am having to do with the Surface.
What are your opinions?

It depends on your preference. But personally I feel that going to the thinkpad just because the mail won't work is very foolish (no offense)

The thing to remember is that it wont have the touch cover. That is part of what makes Surface so unique and so great.

Well my preference is to use the tablet for work and do it easy and fastened, with no work around, tricks to make things to work, etc. In paper the thinkpad says is thinner and lighter, with a full desktop experience, and very close object price. Why do you think is foolish?

Surface Pro?
Well you can always find an app to replace the stock mail app instead of just selling it away. But since the Microsoft surface is new, I can't really blame you for it. Just hope that Microsoft comes up with a new tab and more development on Microsoft apps.

That is a good alternative, the downside is the waiting for 3 months

I check the store at least two times a day looking for another email app but nothing yet. I think I'm going to hold on until day 14 of purchase (7 more) to see if MS fix it or a new app come out.

It will not be close in price. Base model with no keyboard is $650. If you want to have a keyboard (which I consider essential for "work" in most cases) it will run you $800+. Also, the combined weight of the device and keyboard is heavier and thicker than the surface with touch or type cover.
I have the same thoughts. I bought the Surface and like it a lot so far. However, it really is a work in progress since the app selection is so weak. If I could also run Windows Desktop apps it would be easier to wait out the lack of apps on RT. I played with a Samsung ATIV SmartPC at Staples and it's also really nice.
I suspect the performance on the store apps will be better while the desktop performance will be passable. My main concern with these Clover Trail based tablets is that I just don't know how well the battery life will be. The Surface battery life is comparable to iPad. They are claiming 10hrs but who really knows. I figured I would play with Surface for a while and if I didn't like it I would return it by the 30 day period.
The Thinkpad is $150 more than the base surface that I got, so I don't think it's a huge price premium. The keyboard is $120 so it's the same as the type keyboard. I expect the Surface Pro will be over $1000, so it's not in the same class for me. If you are going to buy office anyway then the Surface RT is a much better deal.

You got to give the app selection thing time - They are up to 14,000 apps now.

Worldwide - now closer to 17k. Adding over 300 a day. Mail app is being worked on - I was the original poster at the official MS forums on the issue with pop3 and they have been PM ing me and having them send files from my surface to fix it. The question is will they add any more functionality and/or let others develop a replacement app.

[Q] I'm buying a tablet... what are your thoughts on your device now?

I am in the market for a tablet. I have had plenty of Android phones so I'm very familiar. I have no desire to get an iPad(let's get that out of the way up front) but I've been debating an Android tablet or a Windows 8 tablet. I'm currently contemplating a Note 10.1 but am a little nervous about it's age. We all now that a device that's a almost a year old (gulp) is almost ancient (I'm not knocking it because I'm still considering buying it). So...my question is this:
Given the current options, would you buy a Note 10.1 again? If not, what would you buy instead? Thanks everyone!

Its a great tablet and givin it's age it's still the best one available that runs on android, that's my opinion. I haven't used a windows tablet so I can't say anything about them
sent from my jelly bean infused note 10.1
I would say the Note 10.1 is still the best out there, besides which the S Pen really sets it apart from the competition.
As for Windows 8 tablet vs Android tablet you just have to look at the relative sales for each format to see Android is way out in front and has a comprehensive eco system to match. Microsoft are very much like Apple in that they like to lock their customers in to their own proprietary eco systems, being primarily open source, you don't have to suffer this major limitation with Android.
I've had several Android tablets now and my favourite before the Note 10.1 was the original Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Note 10.1 is a great leap forward.
Still using it everyday, with browsing, drawing and even watching TV with a dvbt-receiver This thing is effectivity and entertainment in its profoundest sense...

If i were u I would narrow it down between the nexus 10 and the note 10.1
The nexus 10 has better specs abviously and it will allways has the updated software and the screen is fantastic
I own a note 10.1 so I'll tell u some features on the note 10.1 that I cant live without
1) the multi-window multitasking believe me its very handy and I use it all the time
2) s-pen I actually only use it in some Web pages as a cursor on the menus of that site
3) sd card I dont have to point the advantage here
And if ur worried about the speed of this device I find it rarely ever lagging
But if it was my choice I would pick non of that list I would wait for the next generation of note 10.1 that device will have the display of the nexus 10 and even better specs and more features
If you are doing a lot of writing S Pen is something you just need to have. If not - get Nexus 10, it's also made by Samsung so component quality should be similar.

What DVDT receiver are you using? Would be cool to get...
A simple guide to tablets today: Are you going to use the tablet for work, or studies? Then the Note 10.1 is without competition in the Android section and there won't be another similar this year since Samsung recently released their 8 inch version. Depending on what you're using it for and your budget the relatively new Samsung Series 7 Slate (or something) is worth checking out, it's a bit larger with 11.6 inch but it got a full windows which of course makes it more of a working machine for obvious reasons (MS Office, Matlab and other full version app to mention a few). It's not as handheld though, but I've not seen it irl so I'm not sure how heavy and bulky it really is and it's about twice as expensive.
If you're typing alot the Asus transformer series is of course something to consider, especially if you like building quality.
But if you just want a tablet for surf, maybe games and movies/pictures I believe the best one out there is Nexus 10.

I bought a note 10.1 today after thinking hard Nexus10 vs. I have and like a Nexus7. But I wanted larger, and felt the rear camera and sd card capability made the important decision parts for me. Costco was $479 today. Couple days ago it was $429. 《Sigh》
WIsh I could get rid of the Samsung embedded apps. That is a disadvantage, the Nexus is clean. Almost like I bought it from Verizon. Wonder how clogged up a vz note is《g》
Thought hard about ASUS transformer and the dock. But saw too much griping online. And no local knowledgeable vendor. Though I likes asus mobos and their nexus 7, I couldn't afford to buy a dud. Besides there are so many variation of the tf700 out there that it is hard to know what you are looking at.
Different direction....
I realize you guys may all laugh at my indecisiveness but this tablet was for work. I went to Best Buy to look at a Note 10.1 in person and for close to the same price I noticed I could get a pretty decent laptop. I'm probably gonna get this :
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-K55N-DS81-15-6-Inch-Laptop-Black/dp/B00B7K11MI/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
It has ridiculously good specs for a cheap price which I can't argue with. I appreciate all of your help!!

Thats all good but the purpose of a tablet is the size and weight which makes it so portable. I rarely use my laptop. It pretty much just sits there collecting dust. I only use it for photoshop and a couple other programs once in a blue.

Yeah I hear you completely but the more I compared a laptop vs a tablet I realized that I'd be limited on several programs I use on a desktop. A laptop would allow me to still use music creation software, vector manipulation and a few others that I wouldn't really be able to do on a tablet without sacrificing performance. I have come to agree that the note 10.1 would currently be the best tablet choice for what I was hoping to do but a laptop is the way to go for me at this point. Thanks everybody!

I got my Note 10.1 about a month ago after struggling with Note 8.0 quality issues (more than 10 checked and all just poor). I have used a lot of tablets and while it got some time to get used to the low res screen of Note 10.1, after a while it won't bother you anymore. This tablet is really wihtout competiton if thinking of something you can really use daily for work and fun. Also the battery life is excellent. As I have said before, I have no use for a tablet without "S Pen" anymore

I've had both the 10.1 and TF700, and the TF700 is a beauty. If your into rooting and tweaking, the TF700 can be made completely smooth, lagfree, and with no problems. Out of the box, its pretty silly, with some work its the same if not for sure better in real world performance than any other tablet on Android.
The battery in the dock, full usb slot, micro sd, full sd card slot, and most of all the far superior screen is what sold me on it. It really depends on what your going to be using it for, I use it for class and the dock is invaluable as well as all of the extended memory. I also watch plenty of HD movies and they are crystal clear which is a plus. But I definitely see the appeal of the Spen, but I'd never use it.

Sometime next month you will be able to do full multitrack recording on pretty much any android device including the note 10.1, different interfaces will have diffrrent compatibility but most should work

if im not late exus 10 a lto better a lot cheaper and more powerful!
Full circle haha
So... I bought that laptop. The DVD drive didn't line up to open or close properly. I thought maybe it was a fluke so I returned it for a replacement. The second one came and the mousepad didn't left click properly. Long story short, a returned that one for a refund... (I guess that's what happens when you try to buy a $380 laptop).
I ordered this tablet this morning and I'll just stick to my desktop for anything that requires more processing power: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10440897&PID=2923696&SID=
That's a great price ! Welcome to the family
