Screen Protector? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey I just got the Nexus 5 and was wondering if a screen protector is really necessary for the Nexus 5?
Any input is appreciated
Thanks!

It's not necessary. They take away somewhat from the overall usability of the screen but give you peace of mind in return.

Personally I use a glass protector and the feel is basically like a naked screen, and I don't notice any difference in sensitivity of the screen or the proximity sensor. It's quite a bit more expensive than a plastic protector but I think it's worth it.

The screen will scratch.
How much that will bother you is a matter of taste.
The Spigen protectors are awesome (both the glass and the plastic). It greatly reduces "my" stress over putting the phone in my pocket and even the plastic ones are nearly unnoticeable both visually and and to touch.

Definitely recommend the glass screen protectors. It feels just like the original screen. Once you try it, you'll never use a plastic protector again.

Glass or nothing. I use nothing..IDC. Feels good.take care of your belongings

Using nexus with screen protector is like "Smelling the rose with gas mask". Remove it and enjoy the perfect colors.

Up to you. I prefer not to but it will scratch without one eventually. Its great against bigger objects like Stanley knives and scissors but its grit that's fine enough to scratch.

Screen protector or not?

I was checking to see how many people do not use screen protectors and how many people do use screen protectors? I am just seeing if anyone is not using the screen protectors. I was wondering because I am having to change mine and it is clear as hell with it off. With it on it is kinda fuzzy. Anyone experiencing scratches in their screen without the screen protectors?
It was the first thing I did to the phone. No need for a screen protector. I have trained myself to carry the phone in my left pocket and keys in the right.
Mine came with a screen protector from the t-mobile store. It seemed pretty smooth, and clear, so I decided to leave it on. About a week after buying the phone, I noticed that the screen protector had gotten scratched, most likely from keys in my pocket. So I removed it and cleaned the glass.
I've been without a screen protector for weeks now, and I like it much better. It is so smooth when I use swype, and obviously the clarity is unmatched. With that being said, I am much more careful about what I have in my pocket along with my phone.
Judging by the lameness of the original screen protector, and what I've read about the GorillaGlass, I have a feeling that whatever was jagged enough to scratch the GorillaGlass, would have gone right through the protector anyway...so I'm going without one.
But I guess I have to be prepared for the consequences if I do mess it up.
I don't use a screen protector and I don't have any scratches. Its gorilla glass so its a lot more durable than ordinary glass.

Yea man I had them stupid T-Mobile anti smear screen protectors on and they sucked Aldo had a body glove case on... well guess what I keep both off the body glove scratched the sides of my phone a little and with the screen protection off its so much clearer and beautiful the screen just pops I love it had it off now for a month and not one scratch not even the tiniest scratch. So I guess the gorilla glass works and when I go out I'll throw a gel case on around the phone
I've kept the screen protector that originally came installed on the phone on it. Its not the greatest and is pretty scratched up now, but I'm not going without one. I've had a vibrant and sgs4g, both with high quality gorilla glass, both ended up getting tiny hairline scratches all over them. I only noticed the scratches at certain angles in certain light, but that's enough for me to not be foolish and think I should have to baby my phone. I shouldn't have to think alot about how I set my phone down or which pocket I put it in and "I hope the coins, keys, pens, etc don't scratch it ". I'd rather just keep a screen protector on and forget about it.
I've decided for now though to not worry about a case. They add too much bulk in my pocket and I'm not too concerned about the condition on the body. That may change if I find a slim case that doesn't hang in my pocket when I try pull I out.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I am going to go without one until I make it to T-Mobile to get another one. Thanks everyone!!

Not to sound x-rated, but going without a screen protector is like not using a condom. You'll love the feel of not using one, but you may possibly pay in the long run by not using one. To me its just a phone and I know it will be replaced by the Samsung Hercules or the next Nexus phone whenever that comes out. Also I am pretty careful about where I place my phone so I never get scratches or dents. If your a landscaper or mechanic then I can understand the use of a screen protector.

No screen protector here and it's awesome. I have used them on all previous phones.
The phone always gets its own pocket or I just hold it. No scratches at all.

those screen protectors you see on amazon or wherever are freaking impossible to get on perfectly without bubbles from little specs of dust
I don't personally use a screen protector but I've installed about 60 invisible shields on G2x's and they look and feel great. If someone installs a screen protector for you and you get bubbles from dust specs or lint then the person who installed it failed.

I left the factory one on because it's the only one that I've seen that covered the (almost) entire screen. I'm still looking though
I install the zagg universal screen protectors at work. Since they are so tough I wouldn't reccomend trimming it with a pair of scissors but rather a razor blade. Works great.

I'm using the Clarivue anti-glare SP on mine -- not for protection, since I keep the phone in a belt case, but to reduce fingerprint smudges and glare. It really helps with those things and doesn't degrade the image quality much at all. I also really like the feel -- on the bare screen, my finger would drag and stick a little on the smooth glass, but the screen protector has just enough texture so it's like moving my finger over paper, no sticking or dragging.

Screen Protectors?

Are screen protectors worth it? Or do they just leave smudges in the future when you take them off? I found a nice case on amazon that I'm going to buy for my infuse, I'm trying to figure out if screen protectors are worth it?
Anybody?
The Naked Shield screen protector came highly recommended by a folk here on the forums. You can either get the full cover or just the screen (I got the screen with the body glove TPU case)
and it won't leave smudges, affects screen quality, but not by much if at all.
edit: Got mine for $3.75 on ebay ($7.00 for the body glove case)
Thanks,
I'm just going to get the Amzer Silicone Skin Jelly Case, looks nice enough for a casing. I'm not going to use a screen protector though. I just don't want to leave any marks on the screen if it does.
I've found that unless you put your phone in your pocket with keys that you don't really need a screen protector.

These thread are kind of pointless. I can understand the value of asking which screen protector or case protector is or are better.
It will cost you $5 to protect a $400+ piece of equipment.
What happens if your phone does get scratched...too late for a screen protector.
Gorilla glass DOES get scratched.
Apply a matt screen protector or a good quality one done the right way and you wont even notice it.
Your assuming that there are no downsides of having a protector. All though screen protectors are cheap and work well. They do affect the screen quality regardless of how well you put it on and its quality. It's personal opinion on how much it affects it though.
IMO it doesn't hurt it too much and I have one on.

I should've restated my question better I guess. I know that some screen protectors leave smudges and stickiness on the actual screen when taken them off. I was wondering if there where any high quality ones out there that are worth it.

If you're still looking for a screen protector I have the naked shield one. I just put it on my phone and it is great. It adds a rubbery finish but still slick when sliding. Unless you do a perfect application the screen does get imperfections that are noticible when looking at off angles (head on in low light it is not noticible)
I have an application with no bubbles and no dust and it looks great. But it is noticible.

Hmmm, very interesting features of Zagg's protectors. But is it glossy or matte? I really don't like fingerprints on the sun, so matte protector may reduce this paintbrush effect

They may offer a matte finish i'm not sure, but mine is glossy so it does pick up fingerprints.
I have the zagg screnn protector too, and no it doesnt leave smudges if removed (only those cheap ones leave smudges/marks when removed) the zagg i got was supposed to be scratch proof...it got a scratch and since it has life time warrenty...i got it replaced-thats the only way i know that it leaves no residue

[Review] CLARIVUE PRIVACY SCREEN PROTECTOR (Choosing Privacy or Anti-glare)

I like to review accessories on XDA. After reading the rave reviews concerning Clarivue screen protectors I decided to contact them for a review unit. Alex from Clarivue was nice enough to send me one of their 4 way privacy screen protectors for the Nexus 4.
I have always been a fan of matte screen protectors. I have a Tech Armor Matte screen protector on my Nexus 7 and love it. I would rather sacrifice a little screen quality in order to avoid the hassles of screen glare and fingerprints. What I have learned over the years is that there is a big difference in price, quality and screen degradation between manufactures of matte screen protectors. With a price of $19.99 at www.clarivue.com the Clarivue LG GOOGLE NEXUS 4 4 WAY PRIVACY SCREEN PROTECTOR is far from the cheapest on the market. While many companies have yet to make accessories for the Nexus 4, history shows most of the competition will price around the $6.95-$11.95 range. So my question is what makes this screen protector worth the extra cost and should I buy a privacy protector over a standard anti-glare?
At first look this privacy screen protector resembles a regular matte finish. (Please see the picture below of my clarivue screen protector alongside my nexus 7 Tech Armor matte protector.) You can see it has multiple closed layers and it has a little bit of a rippled look when viewed with the screen off. My finger still moves smoothly over the surface. The finish has an anti-fingerprint layer helping to prevent smudges when you touch the screen. In a stark contrast to the $4.95 screen protectors, the Clarivue privacy protector comes with a clear protector for the rear of the device. In my opinion, this is a fantastic idea and I am surprised more manufactures have not adopted this. The combination of a privacy screen for the front and a clear screen for the back is only logical and still allows you to showcase the design on the rear of the Nexus 4. Packaging for the screen protectors was top notch. In addition to the attractive packaging from Clarivue, it was also placed in a bubble wrap package to insure it was not damaged in transit. Shipping time took 5 days via USPS.
The fit and finish of this protector set is amongst the best on the market. The film is actually the thickest I have ever experienced with a screen protector. Due to the curved edge of the Nexus 4’s screen, Clarivue was not able to build the screen protector from edge to edge. As a privacy screen protector it did lead to an interesting design flaw. When viewing the screen protector from the side, light actually slips around the sides of the screen protector. The anti-glare, anti-fingerprint layer works very well. Viewing angles were interesting. Please review the screen shot below. When viewed from a 45 degree angle the screen is still clearly visible and I was able to read the information clearly (First picture after up close screen shots). I have also posted images of an 80 degree angles. Please note that the screen information can still be seen. This was the same when viewed from the top and bottom as well. Another note is that with a privacy screen protector installed the notification light is very hard to view. Keep this in mind if you use this on a daily basis.
The screen degradation on the Nexus 4 with the Clarivue Privacy protector installed is substantial. I will be the first to admit that this is my first experience with a privacy screen protector. From my research I knew the protector would decrease clarity. I was not aware of the black lines that create a grid network across the screen. It does not lead to a pixilated look that can sometimes be present in matte screen protectors. It almost resembles looking at an extremely clear screen through a chain link fence. In comparison to a matte screen protector, the Clarivue privacy screen protector does cause a larger decrease in screen clarity and light passage. I have also noted a decrease in initial touch sensitivity with the screen protector installed. Initial touch will register at .50+ and scrolls will register as low as .34. I have noticed multiple missed presses after installing the protector. Despite the decrease in sensitivity I am actually impressed at how little it changed the normal responsiveness based on the thickness of the material.
Clarivue sells the Privacy Protector with a stated scratch resistant coating. In order to test this was wanted to see how the protector stood up against a set of keys. I performed the standard key to screen scratch test. I am shocked to say that the Clarivue screen protector performed FANTASTIC! Using light to moderate pressure I was only able to get one micro scratch what is not viewable with the screen on. Great job Clarivue! I would definitely trust this screen protector in a pocket or purse with keys and other objects. This is important when you think about the cost knowing that the screen protector will last for the foreseeable future.
In final, my impressions of the Clarivue Privacy Screen Protector are that it has top of the line quality and great packaging. The screen protector does not completely black out the screen when viewed from an angle, and it does cause a noticeable decrease in screen quality. Would I recommend this privacy screen protector for $19.99? No I would not. I am however considering getting their version of the matte screen protector. The ultra-clear back they sent me is beautiful, however it is a fingerprint magnet. I think that for $14.99 for two anti-glare protectors the quality is worth the cost. Clarivue was nice enough to provide us with a 10% discount code for reading this review. At checkout please use: ten2013. It is valid until 30 June 2013.
If you would like to purchase one of Clarivue’s Nexus 4 screen protectors you can do so at their website: http://www.clarivue.com. Additionally Clarivue has asked that if you like their products please “like” them on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Clarivue-Screen-Protectors/99840540072.
I hope this review has helped a few of you picking your screen protectors. This might help save a few bucks if you were wondering the benefit of a privacy screen protector vs matte. Please hit the thanks button if this helped. See the pics below and let me know if you have questions.

I think all the screen protectors have the same cut. The good part is that it does have the cut out for the proximity sensor. To be honest I don't think you will find a screen protector with a closer cut unless you go with a wet install.

For me the screen protector is nice and all. I got the anti glare one and the matte feels smooth. The screen protector didn't come with a proximity sensor cut out... Which I think is necessary so I emailed them about it. I don't like how the screen protector bubbles at the sides of the phone right before the curve part like mentioned by the op.
OP thanks for the review. I am a sucker for the anti glare protectors. Question for you though, I know I want the anti glare for the front but still want to be able to show off the back. How did the anti glare effect the look of the back of the phone. I emailed Alex to see if they could throw together a anti glare front and clear back for me but he suggested ordering two different sets.... don't think so at these prices! Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I ordered a set of 3 cheap anti-glare screen protectors from eBay, came in today and yes, the sides aren't probably going to be covered by any dry install screen protectors and anti-glare is great at fingerprints and glare but suck for degrading the screen quality.
Now, I don't know if I should take off the xtremeguards that I currently have and install the antiglare now.

From my understanding if you order the matte front it does come with a matte back in the set. I received the privacy protector which is paired with a clear back. So the one I have installed is clear and I can not comment on a matte protector on the back. I would say that I agree with you about the cost being to excessive to buy 2 separate protectors (matte front, clear back). The clear back looks nice however I still get a air bubble every once in a while in the center of the back. It is not from dust and I can easily squeeze it out. This is the first time I have experienced this before.
Alex asked me to send him feedback from the customers so they cold recommend improvements. I think they Clarivue should seriously consider making an option for a matte/clear set. I mean seriously, who wants a matte back with such a beautiful design?
Sorry I could not be more help. If I stumble across a pic of a matte back I will pm the link to you.

Love the BestSkinsEver for the Nexus 4. Wet install but incredibly smooth with almost no orange peel.
Of course the installation is everything. You can have the world's best/worst screen protector depending on how you install it.

I bought Skinomi skin...and failed too bad on the front.
For some reason, the BLACK Skinomi towel spread black particles and some of there are now between my screen and the protector
Also...is superfluous me some up and some down. Is taller than N4....
Now i bought 3 extremeguard from eBay...but i think it will be the same ****...(i hope no).
I want the "Basic and Rigid" 100% Clear, cheap cover....that i had on my S3...."Screen Guard" was called.
1 or 2 "mm" smaller than the S3 just to have a little more chance to install it without excess.
Really appreciate the responses everyone. I will try one of those out for sure

I have xtremeguard in the front and back. The cut outs are good, but the covers are two to three millimeters too short along the width of the phone. The covers are wet application type which means that they have a bit of a rubber feel. The one thing that I don't like about this cover is that they eventually peel along the edges.

It depends on what you are looking for. Screen protectors (good ones) will take the impact of an object and keep it from damaging the glass. I have been a fan of xo skins for a while because they self heal and are one of the few that resist sand. If you go with a glass type or acrylic, they do feel smoother, but you will begin to see scratches and scuffs that don't go away. The wet install ones also fill in existing scratches. The xo ones have the closest to glass feel, but are still the aircraft skin type without orange peel. Just depends on what features are most important to you.

agreed, I bought the xtrmeguard as well and the size was spot-on, but the screen cover feels too rubber-ish (almost broke my fingers couple times trying to slide ), so I decided to change to regular screen protector; besides, I'm already used to leave my phone away from any sharp objects.
Best screen protector? Any of the SGP protectors of course :victory:

What's the difference and which ones better, the ultra crystal dual or just ultra crystal? I want the smoothest and closest feel to the one that comes with the phone..

The 'dual' part just means front and back.
I've been using an SGP on my N4 from day one (~Dec20) and it's been perfect, comparing to the one that comes with the phone is laughable. The SGP looks and feels just like the bare glass to me. It does attract face oil and fingerprints, but that beats scratches, and it's nothing a quick wipe won't solve.

Perfect, thank you. I hate protectors because of that rubbery feel but if I would of known this.. Would of had the first day. :/ now I got 2 tiny hairline scratches that I have no idea where it came from. And Im always careful with these. Had my GS2 without one for 2yrs and nothing happen to its screen now this phone since Nov 20th and got these scratches that you can't really see unless you look carefully after wiping the screen :/ but thank you for your input. Will be buying one of these..
Anyone try this kind.. Says its HD wonder how the feel is..

Does the spg kind come with a lifetime warranty against scratches?

I used SGP on my Galaxy S2. It works pretty nice, feels great. My only complaints were it attracts fingerprints like crazy, and a year later my screen protector has some minor scratches on it (not really visible when the screen is on). It happens since the hardness is only 4H and stuff like sand is a lot tougher than that. But I'm just glad its only the screen protector and my actual screen.
I had the Rearth Ringbo Screen protector on my Nexus 7. They fit really nice and look great. Feels fine, though the only OCD issue I have with it is when the screen is off, the screen protector displays almost like an orange peel effect (probably anti-UV coating or something). It does a better job of reducing fingerprints but its no where as bad as the SGP ones.
If I had to pick to get one for my Nexus 4... I'm leaning towards SGP again.

The Screen guards for Note 8.0

The Note 8.0 doesn't come with anything like a Gorilla Glass. So I guess, a ScreenGuard would be pretty important, especially for Guys who carry the 8.0 everywhere. So post your experiences, recommendations here for everyone to see.
P.S. The Note 8.0 is yet to be launched in my country(India), but eBay is already full with 2-3 dozen listings for Scratch guards ranging anywhere between 5-20 USD!!

While Samsung doesnt explicitly advertise it, there is certainly some sort of treated glass on the Note 8. The glass is comparable to the glass on the Note 2 both in thicknesses and hardness. I tested on one of the bank's test units and it can certainly take abuse, even so far as resisting scratches from coarse granite.

Thats good to know. Though I wonder why Samsung would choose to do so?
Even if doesn't want to pay royalties to Corning for the Gorilla Glass, at least it could write "scratch resistant glass" in its specs.
Would certainly improve our impression of the build quality of the Note8.

That really is bizarre that Samsung doesn't seem to mention anything about the quality of the glass--that seems like a big oversight on their part! It is good to hear your first-hand experience though--that is encouraging!
Perhaps at some point you or others could give a more detailed analysis of the glass quality, specific abuse it can withstand, etc.?
Even Gorilla Glass can be scratched from normal usage (as numerous reports by XDA users on various devices will attest). So don't take for granted that treated glass or GG makes your screen impossible to scratch.
Many people prefer the feel of going bareback with no protection, which is understandable. And its certainly a matter of preference. But its a simple fact that once you do scratch it, it really can't be undone. So if you are worried about scratches, better to protect it now, and not have to regret it later.
As far as what protector to buy, my recommendation would be to avoid the cheap ones. They tend to scratch easily, attract fingerprints, and you will be lucky to get them to last a couple months. Get a quality one in the $20 US range, as these are typically very difficult to scratch, actually attract less fingerprints and grime than the bare screen, and last a long time. I've had good quality protectors on my phone and my old tablet, that have been on for a year of more, and still look great. So in terms of durability and sheer quality, buying a good quality protector really pays off. Also, the wet apply type is much easier to install than dry.
Not sure what brands are available in the OPs home country. But I've had good luck with Skinomi and Zagg, but there are other high quality brands, as well.

+1 to your opinion. Have seen some Gorilla glasses scratched.
Regards to applying, I would actually from a brick-and-mortar mobile shops, those guys are real experts at applying these.
Also, can anybody tell me the effect of the screen guard on the S-pen experience. Glossy or Matte. Which one would be preferrable? so as to not deteriorate the experience much

The wet apply screen protectors are pretty forgiving, and easy to apply. But having a pro do it is not a bad idea, if you are uncomfortable trying. If they mess it up, they typically just take it off and try again with a new protector (at no charge to you). Obviously not an option, if you do it yourself.
Can't comment personally on matte protectors. But some folks over at the HTC Flyer forum (my old tablet, that also has pen support) seemed to like the matte protectors, as the slightly textured surface felt a bit more like writing on paper. Using the pen on the glossy or non-matte variety is very similar to how it feels on the bare screen.
Matte protectors also cut down on glare. But they tend to give a "hazy" look to the screen that I find unacceptable.

Thanks for the quick reply.
As a screen itself, I find Matte ones to be better, the viewing angles and sharpness can feel a notch down than the glossy, but the reduction in glare is pretty significant. I have it on one of my Laptops(also Samsung) and it feels very good.
I guess have to wait for others' views on the S-pen experience. Probably other Note devices have some opinions on other XDA sections, will try to find out
I hired the Geek Squad to install one of those InvisibleShield protectors from BestBuy when I got my Note 8, and had it on my tablet for about three hours. I took it off because it creates an incredible amount of friction with the S Pen's nub, making writing with the thing a fantastically aggravating chore (not to mention that the pen left track marks). I'm not saying that all screen protectors are so bad when it comes to this thing's core functionality, but InvisibleShield sure is. I'd be very curious about a protector with the lubriciously of the actual screen.

Could you throw some light on the material of the Screen Guard, was it glossy or matte?
So are you without the Guard now?

The ZAGG InvisibleShield screen protectors are the type applied with a liquid solution. Any of these type of screen protectors need to sit untouched for at least 24 hours to completely dry and become hard. Otherwise if you use your device before the skin has had a chance to completely dry, it will be slightly gummy at first, then a bit harder but still a bit of a rubber-type surface when using a stylus, which causes the stylus tip grab or stutter across the surface. Even when dry, these have a slight Orange Peel surface that I don't care for. YMMV. IME these also don't work well or last very long in Tropical or humid enviroments.
I've never liked any of the wet-application protectors for these reasons...I've tried the Zagg's, Skinomi's and one other I can't remember. I'll stick to the SGP/Steinhill Ultra Crystal dry-application protectors. Unfortunately, these aren't available yet for the Note 8.0.

Huh... that liar. The guy at BB told me that the protector would be just fine and dandy after two hours, which is why I bailed after trying to use it for an hour. Oh well. At least it provided about an hour of amusement as my buddy and I attempted to rip or puncture the plastic with everything we had in the house (we were unsuccessful, even with ceramic knives and a motorized hand drill) (edit- after I had taken the protector of my tablet, of course). I'll keep an eye out for one of the dry applicators that you mention. And I'll apply it myself, after reading the instructions with my own eyes.

Be aware that dry apply is much more difficult to put on. With wet apply, you have time to slide it around, into just the right position, before you squeegee the excess application fluid out. With dry apply, its basically like a sticker, if you are off by just millimeters as you start to place it, you have to peel it back and start over, likely getting more fingerprints on the edges every time you do that.
Also, for some reason I can't explain, the wet apply gets much less dust under the protector as you apply it. The wet apply protectors I've used (twice now) have gone on flawlessly, and dust free as far as I can see. Before this, I used the dry apply many times. It took some practice before I could really get a dust free application. The first few I did, had a good amount of dust under them until I learned to go it just right. Even with experience, it takes a lot of care to get a dust free install with the dry apply. With wet apply, its pretty effortless.
I couldn't tell you why the wet apply seems to get less dust under them during installation. It doesn't make sense by conventional wisdom. Maybe dust particles just get carried away, when you squeegee the excess application fluid away.
I'd recommend doing the shower trick with the dry apply type (and it doesn't hurt with wet apply either) to reduce the amount of dust in the air while you do the install. That is, run a hot shower for 10 minutes or so, to steam up your bathroom. This pulls much of the dust out of the air. Then bring your tablet in there and apply the protector (don't leave it in there before or after the install, to minimize the time the device is exposed to high humidity).
Its true that dry apply does have a smoother finish and less tacky feel then wet apply. They tend to not suffer from the "orange peel" look. But the orange peel look on good quality wet apply protectors tends to be hardly visible when the screen is off, and not visible at all when the screen is on. But this might vary depending on the room's lighting conditions. To me, the orange peel is not a bother, but that is probably a personal preference.
The experts who put the guards here, first polish the device display to a great extent and then put the guard straightaway.
The one they applied on my phone, had a good protective covering which was peeled as the guy applied more and more. Even after this, there was another protection over the actual guard.
Also the screen guard wasnt specifically for my device, he also cut it out as per my device after the application.

I emailed Spigen SGP asking if they were going to make one for the Note 8 and they said they had no plans to do so. i was certainly disappointed to hear that. I have one of their protectors on my note 2 and its great. I agree with you, the dry apply protectors are so much smoother than the wet ones and do not have orange peel or get that "sticky" feeling.
there is another thread with a review of the MiniGuard protectors which look to be of the dry apply variety. i almost bought some the other day when i ran across them at amazon and now that the review confirmed it (with pics too), this looks like the best option since Spigen wont be making anything.

That is too bad about Spigen SGP. If you (or others) try out the MiniGuard protectors consider letting us all know your impressions (and whether you went with Clear or Anti-Glare). @JokeZony0u has done a great review of the Clear protectors, but I think it is still helpful to have multiple datapoints for these kinds of things.
^^Thanks for that. Yeah, it looks as if the MiniGuard is the dry-app protector to get since Spigen SGP is out of the equation. Hopefully we'll get more good reviews of other protectors as well.
I agree that the hot, steamy shower technique is good. Also have some small, clean pieces of 3M Scotch Tape handy to pluck off any dust particles from the screen or the contact side of the protector film. I use a large microfiber cloth lightly dampened with isopropol alcohol to clean the entire device beforehand. Then I use the included microfiber cloth to further clean the screen just before applying the protector.
There's a good YouTube video on the best way to apply the dry protectors.
You line the protector up on your screen first (before removing any layers).
Then once the film is aligned properly, hold it in place and attach two pieces of blue painter's tape to the top of the protector film and just along ONE SIDE of the phone/tablet...one near the top and one near bottom, so that the screen protector flaps open to one side like a page in a book, using the blue painter's tape as a hinge.
Flip it open & out of the way and clean the screen again with your microfiber cloth. Double-check your alignment and readjust if necessary.
Then peel back the bottom film layer, remove it completely, and slowly apply the screen protector from the taped side to the free side.
Sqeegee out any bubbles.
Lift the protector just slightly with another small piece of blue painter's tape if you need to remove any dust particles with your Scotch Tape.
Sqeegee again and make sure the alignment is good.
Only remove the side positioning tape if you are satisfied with the application and alignment.
Finally, carefully remove the temporary top layer from the main screen protector film, being careful not to lift the main protector film.
