Sneakin' the update - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Currently stock unrooted 4.1.2 for some tests. When I odin'ed back to 4.0.4, I went to settings, about phone, system updates: check for updates and it popped up per usual saying I had an update. I said yes and it preceeded to download. When it had finished it asked another pop up asked to update with the freshly downloaded software. Where does that downloaded software get stored? I wanted to download the new 4.3 system update so I could copy it to my computer and get to investigating but after I download it, I do NOT want to update my phone with it. Wary of anything to do with it because it has locked down and bricked a lot of peoples devices now. Links, pointers, suggestions and all greatly appreciated. Just saw some of the members discussing the dwv blocks which turned me on to this idea.

OTA updates save to /Cache/FOTA after they are downloaded. Btw, we have two 4.3 threads in the General section devoted to our latest OTA. One is titled 4.3 discussion thread and the other is titled along the lines of "4.3 is arriving in October." Both have plenty of discussion going on and are your best bet on following progress on the 4.3 OTA.

Thank you! I've actually been following both of the threads to the letter but this side project of mine is more of a personal nature. If things prove conclusive then I will report findings. Need to take a gander at the low-level code written in C.

@SlimSnoopOS
Do you know if it is safe to check for update, when it says there is one for 4.3, download it and when it is finished downloading, adb pull it onto computer and never select install?

Excluding the ADB part, that's what I did lol I switched to my rooted VRBMF1 rom and did so. OTAs are a two step process. First, it asks if you want to download the update and then once it downloads you'll receive another popup asking if you want to install it at which point you can select Later or Install now. If you stay on stock though, and if you move that update.zip from /Cache, it will repeatedly ask you later to download again so freeze/rename system app "sdm 1.0" if you don't want it to autoinstall if you're asleep or away for too long.

If the same rules apply for a successfuly OTA update, (1) you must be on ICS stock ROM, and (2) stock recovery; (3) no apps frozen or debloated to get the update

Whenever I try to do a Software Update on my phone, the screen turns black and then a second later a notice pops up saying "Unfortunately, settings has stopped". I am running CleanROM 3.0 on an Android version of 4.0.4.

I have to disagree, this will not help. Color Green is trying to check for OTA's via Settings/About Phone/Software Update
Color Green, why are you trying to do a software update on a custom rom? Scrosler (CleanRom dev) removed the file that allows you to check for Verizon OTA's. Pretty much every dev does something similar. This happens on purpose so you do not receive constant OTA prompts. If you want a software update, Odin to stock and accept them. No custom rom will allow you to successfully update via OTA.

Ahh ok. The file that was removed is "sdm1.0" and there's possibly another file as well. Even if that file was present and you were able to "receive" an OTA prompt, it would fail because you have a custom recovery installed. That same custom recovery you used to flash CleanRom is the same one preventing Verizon OTA's from automatically installing.

Never ever OTA on a custom ROM.
Just like previous guy said, if you want to OTA you need to Odin back to stock. There a guide in the development section called "how to root and more" or something. Follow section 6 of that guide to Odin. It's a very simple process. I'm pretty sure you lose root, boot loader gets locked and your custom recovery goes away.

yeah....you'll have to wait for the dev to cook in the 4.2 upgrades......the first ones to ever get the upgrades implemented is AOSP/AOKP roms because they're essentially barebones android, but with some added tweaks
in the case of the jump from 4.1.1/4.1.2 to 4.2, not much is being added except for the new camera with fully functioning libs, fully upgraded gapps, a new 4.2 keyboard w/ gesture typing, and a few other things as well as polishing up things that are already present that needed polishing from 4.1.1

Looking for official Jelly Bean OTA file

My wife's phone received the official Jelly Bean OTA file yesterday and now her phone is totally FUBAR. I've factory reset it 3 times now and each time different things stop working. I'd like to get the official OTA file and re-apply and then factory reset it one more time. Does anyone have the file or a URL to download it?

Thanks but those all look like they have been de-odexed or rooted. I was looking for the "virgin" OTA that comes straight from Verizon. I want to see if that makes the phone work again properly before adding in the variable of rooting it.
They are. You may want to look at section 5 of that guide again. The first download is the official ota

Ok thanks. I think I need my eyes checked too. Anyway, I downloaded it and applied it to my wife's phone. Still having the issues synching the Google contacts on the two accounts we use to store contacts. FWIW, I am wondering if VZW has pulled the update. My SG III was bugging me for since Friday to apply the JB OTA and has finally just stopped. My wife's phone on the other hand is totally non functional even after applying the full wipe version of JB.

How to stop OTA updates?

I searched and there seems to only be threads in the T-mobile section for the S3, or other phones (sorry if I missed one).
So normally when an OTA gets pushed out, we get a notification and have to accept the download correct? Well my last OTA to JB was downloaded and installed overnight while I was sleeping (never touched my phone). So I woke up and had JB installed.
At the time it didnt matter too much because I was bone stock, but it still irritated me, because what if I wasnt stock. Now Im rooted/ROM'd and dont want anything like that happening again.
So is there a way to block the OTA for a Vz GS3?
I see this app here in the play store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bitrifle.otablocker&hl=en
but there are only 25 total reviews so im not sure how much faith I would really want to put in that.

OK three things if you upgrade to supersu pro you can go into survivor mode which will look to protect root at all costs. Secondly you could disable automatic updates in settings. And lastly there is an App now called voodoo ota rootkeeper which will allow you to back up your root and then you will be able to temporary un root take the ota and then restore root but bear in mind if you read the descriptions on the recently released roms they are set up to block ota update pushes
Let me know how you make out

Bold emphasis is mine. To delve into this a little further, the exact file that is removed by devs is called "sdm 1.0" which is a system app. If you use Titanium Backup (or really any file explorer) you can freeze or remove that file. Plenty of folks started doing this during one of our previous OTA's. Also, if the OTA installs but fails (usually because you have a custom recovery) you need to do the above step AND also go to /cache folder and delete the OTA from that directory. Here's an example.
As an fyi, doing this will result in your "Check for updates" option in Settings/ to force close but that is intentional.
Emphasis was unintentional as you can tell I am super new to all things development related see now I learned something new again thanks for the heads up brother and again did not mean to highlight any portion of text

Thanks guys. Im currently running the latest (4.1.2) milestone ROM from AOKP, so im really not sure if they bake blocking the OTA into their ROMs or not.
I do have MyBackUpPro and can freeze system aap, so ill hop in and see if I can find sdm. Im not expecting another OTA for a while, but I just really do not want it to auto install like it did previously.

[Help] Unroot Nexus 5

I have recently purchased a used Nexus 5 off Swappa and I am curious about unrooting the phone. The main reason I am curious about this is so I can receive the 4.4.3 update when it comes out. So I have 2 questions: 1) Do I need to unroot the phone in order for it to pick up the OTA update? 2) How do I go about unrooting the phone? I have read about many different ways and would like to know the best.
Thanks in advance!
Please go to Nexus 5 general forum. All your answers are in the sticky threads

Keep the phone rooted and enjoy! And wait probably a couple days after the ota for a stock ROM or files to flash.
Ota's are for non nexus owners.

I'm with kj. Roll with man. Only reason I'd unroot it is if the person that did it didn't do it right and your having connection issues etc. Enjoy ur new to u hammerhead
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
If you want to unroot you will have to remove all of the necessary files, which can be a pain if you have other things such as busybox installed. And no, you will not be able to apply an OTA if you have modified the firmware (from my experience, having root will block installation via the stock recovery).
The easiest way to restore your phone completely and be ready to accept OTAs is to restore the phone using a factory image found here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?csw=1
Unzip the file and open the .bat file to automatically flash the images, keep in mind that it will wipe your sdcard and factory reset your phone.

if i am wrong someone please correct me.
the OTA update does not delete any of your data.
as another user said you can download the current stock image from google server and flash it. it will delete your data.
you can download and open the stock image and fastboot flash system.img and boot.img. this way you are ready for OTA update but will keep your data.
