I have had my nexus 5 since launch day.I have also been using hangouts with sms integration since it launched.
Ive had 2 sim cards in it (straight talk wireless and att go phone wireless). Today i switched finally to AIO wireless put in the apn settings and now when i go to settings in hangouts there is no option for group mms like there used to be. I know exactly where its supposed to be since I use group mms alot. Now all my messages are coming in as sms. I can send and receive photos just fine so i know my apn settings are correct.
It has to be an issue with hangouts..anyone have any ideas?
update: If i go into app info and disable hangouts (which uninstalls the updates) Group mms works again. The option still isnt in settings (which is wierd) but i atleast can group mms again. If i install the updates via google play then group mms stops working again. So now i have to run hangouts version 2.0.128 for it to work correctly.

Do you have the right APN settings for AIO? The APN type also filled in?
Hi there. Noobie here. My hangouts version is 2.0.217 and it has group MMS option as seen in my screenshot.

I'm also having this issue. Can you explain this? I went into the APN settings, but im not sure what i should be changing
Edit: welp, i uninstalled the updates, cleared the data, opened it so it could verify my phone number, restarted my phone, and then updated. The option is there now. gg
Same thing for me. I have a Nexus 5 that had been using Hangouts for group MMS since the day it came home. The latest version of Hangouts broke the functionality -- it defaults to individual SMS messages to each recipient and there is no option in Settings to turn it off or on. I have had the same SIM and same carrier the whole time, and the Nexus is currently running 4.4.2.
I uninstalled the Hangouts update and group MMS is now working again.
I'm having a weird issue. My girlfriend started a group message on her iPhone with myself (nexus 5) and her sister (iPhone). I receive her texts but none from her sister. I have group messaging on but still nothing. Anyone have any ideas?

This is beyond frusterating and even more that it makes no sense. I have Google Hangouts ver 2.0.217 and the "Group Messaging" option has never been there. It's a supported feature on my carrier ( I have a Samsung Galaxy S4, also on Hangouts 2.0.217 ) which does have that options listed under the settings. My APNs are identical to how the S4 are set up, and we have the same version of Hangouts.
I have tried everything everyone else reported fixes it, uninstalling updates, re installing, rebooting, trying a new SIM card, etc... Nothing seems to resolve it... I'm using the phone stock, and no mods/roms loaded on it minus what comes from Google...

Not sure if anyone is still having this issue... I may have figured it out on my Xperia Z1.
On line 215 of packages/apps/Mms/src/com/android/mms/ui/MessagingPreferenceActivity.java there is a comment that says:
// If the phone's SIM doesn't know it's own number, disable group mms.
I went to Phone > Settings > Additional settings > My phone number and it was blank. So, I entered my phone number, reboot, and now I have the Group Messaging option.
Thanks

Usually you don't have to touch the APN setting because it's configured for you automatically.Note that changing the APN can mess up your data connectivity, so be careful when editing it! (Mangling the APN actually is a strategy for blocking apps from using up data, though.)
For troubleshooting, tap "Reset Settings" to get back to the default APN information if for some reason you've messed up the APN settings.
If your carrier allows you to view the APN settings, you can find it on your device under these menus, If your carrier does not allow you to change your APN , you might try a service/site like Unlockit NZ..
Go to Settings > Wireless & Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

I have the same problem last weekend.I, solved this problem a little differently. I had an iPhone and switched to a Nexus 5. I could send texts from my new Nexus 5 to other iPhones (such as my son's iPhone) but could not receive messages on my new Nexus 5 from other iPhones. I solved this by changing my contact on my son's iPhone so that my number is not "tagged" in the contact as an "iPhone" but as "mobile". That forced my son's iPhone to send future messages as a texts instead of iMessages.

Interesting find! These files should control the stock messaging app, not Hangouts? Presumably Hangouts has something similar going on though so fixing one fixed both in your case.
I am on a Sprint LG Optimus G (rooted and running 4.4.2 by way of an unofficial CM11 build), my SIM appears to "know its own number" and I have the group MMS option in the AOSP Messaging app, but not in Hangouts. I think it may still be SIM card related as when I send a text I get this popup message "Insert a SIM to send SMS" (though the message sends anyway). See line 191,
if (!MmsApp.getApplication().getTelephonyManager().hasIccCard()) {
// No SIM card, remove the SIM-related prefs
mSmsPrefCategory.removePreference(mManageSimPref);

I knew it was for the stock messaging app. I was just hoping that Google reused code =) in my case it appears that they did because I had the same issue with stock messaging and hangouts.
I have confirmed that, that fixed it for both apps.

I also have an optimus g on sprint running carbon 4.4 and I have the same issue with hangouts. Could you explain your fix a little more, sorry I'm fairly new to the whole flashing ROMs thing. I would prefer to use hangouts but without the group messaging option it's kind of pointless.
The fix was for Nexus 5, no fix for the Optimus G yet that I'm aware of. In fact international models with official 4.4 update still can't get group MMS.

O, Ok I guess I didn't quite follow that haha. When I flash the vanilla unicorn 4.4 ROM hangouts works perfectly fine with group messing and all but that's the only ROM I've used where it worked. Pretty frustrating to say the least.

Usually with these kinds of issues, apps are looking at "product", or "name", or "device". But I had tried a few of those and didn't have any success. Based on the OP's findings with the Nexus 5, it may be some weirder stuff here. One thing that stood out when I threw these into text-compare.com is gsm.current.phone-type=2, maybe try inserting that line into the one that doesn't work. I don't know if it will break data or anything though.
You should post this in the Optimus G forums and see if you get more experienced people to weigh in on it.
Ok, will do. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

THANK YOU. I have been avoiding Hangouts updates since 2.0.2 because they broke group MMSing for me, and then last week when the 4.4.3 OTA came down, it updated me to the version of Hangouts that broke group MMS. Taking my SIM card out and popping into an ancient flip phone let me set my MSISDN (the SIM card's stored phone number), and now it works fine!
I have been chasing a fix to this ever since 2.0.2 was released in December, and in the interim I've been using Handcent or Evolve and they're just not what I wanted.

Hey guys,
I don't know if any of you have encountered this problem, but it seems that it not possible to use the GV app on a Sprint phone without the Sprint integration. I removed the settings for the GV app on my NS4G and now when I try to set up GV again, I only get the one of two options 1) port my Sprint # to GV, or 2) use my GV # for outgoing calls. I want to do neither, and yet use GV for outgoing international calls. This is how it works on other providers, and I was able to do so earlier on Sprint as well, but now it seems like full integration is the only way to go on Sprint.
Is there a workaround?
Update google voice from the market and when you first open google voice, hit "skip" on the first page instead of "next". It will then assign you a different google voice # other than your integrated one

Thank you very much! I didn't realise there was an update in the market that fixes this. I guess upgrading to 2.3.5 must've killed whatever updates the app had. It works as expected now.

Glad to here it.
I'm having similar problems... At first, all of my calls went through google voice and I had no option to change it... I called Sprint, and the representative said she had to "undo it from her side"...
Now no matter what I do, when I call it will not use my google voice number at all... This worked fine on AT&T, and on my first Evo 3D (sprint and it overheated so I got it exchanged)
I just want to use it in a similar way to how the OP did... the widget even has the "Use for all calls" selected and greyed out...
For some reason my voicemail doesnt work on my phone. I am using the miui rom and under the settings to put in a voicemail number I had my phone number there and it would connect to my voicemail box. I used that number because this rom made the number blank to begin with so I had to figure out a way to access my voicemails. I use att and do not know their access number for my voicemails. What should i do?
yep. on gingerbread sense rom, its your phone number....so, yeah
also, there is a MIUI sticky for future reference.
Thanks for you're help but it actually wasn't supposed to be my number. Its a different one. I found it by using the number under the forwarding options that says what number it would forward calls to once enabled

Att uses a seperate voicemail number so they can deduct it from your monthly amount due to it not being and att number. I always change the default number to my cell number so I don't get charged for the call to voicemail.
Voicemail Issues A Month After Setup
My girlfriend and I both have an HTC Inspire through AT&T. I put the MIUI ROM on both of our phones about a month ago. I set up the voicemails according to our cell phone numbers and it worked for awhile. But now when we both try calling our voicemail box it just rings and eventually says the caller is not available. This has been going on for the past week. Would this be an AT&T issue of a fix that can be done in MIUI? Please help, I cannot find a forum on this topic! Thanks for your help!

I am using gumicharged 1.9 on my droid charge. I am having a time difficult using any type of voicemail service. Verizon VM or Google voice. Verizon wireless Visual Voicemail says that it is "unable to establish connection to the mailbox."
I tried using google voice but they don't have support for my carrier (Verizon) I tried porting the number by dialing *71 and my GV # but that didn't work, when someone calls it tells them to enter the number that they are trying to dial and # but it just says "I didn't get that" I also tried dialing *71 and my mobile # but that didn't work either.
Any thoughts??
Edit: Anyway to get Verizon's Visual VM to work on a rooted droid charge using gumi1.9
Try *90xxxxxxxxxx and *92xxxxxxxxxx in addition to *71. The SIM-based architecture changes a few of the dialer codes from the Verizon norm, but using those three got GV working for me.

DO them all? Or just try different ones? Any particular order?
All three. No particular order. Make sure it's with your GV number.
Visual Voicemail is included in the Gummy Toolbox.
I wanted to get some clarification as there doesn't seem to be any clear information about this.
Currently, I have a Google Voice # that I've had for several years that is used for general items only. I do not want to get rid of this number.
We will be leaving Sprint soon to go to TMobile's $30 Value plan, I'm seriously thinking about porting my current Cell # to GV as well.
Is it possible to have 2 separate GV#'s? If so how would you tell GV which number you want to dial out on? I'm also curious how this would work with Caller ID, say I want the original GV# to continue to show that number for inbound calls and my ported cell# to show the actual number that is calling.
Hello all, ever since I changed my phone to OP5 I've noticed my voicemail goes to my carrier (AT&T) and not Google Voice. I've never had a Google # and only used the app to receive voicemail (free visual VM app). I've gone through all the online options to set up GV from Google's website but I've noticed the option under legacy GV to "active VM on this device" is no longer listed.
Is it my phone or has the app changed? Any help to get GV to work again would be great. If this is no longer a feature of GV unless you have a Google #, then any suggestion on an alternative visual VM would be appreciated.
Thanks
Wrong sub I guess? This is for OnePlus One
